Last Years 15-inch 2.53ghz vs This years 15-inch 2.4ghz Macbook Pros

I purchased a new 15-inch MBP last year (the base model with the 2.53ghz processer, 4gb ram, etc.). I saw they recently released the new i5 processors for the MBPs, however, I noticed the new base model only has a 2.4ghz processor. In the past I have upgraded my computer every year, but I need some convincing why this new i5 2.4ghz processor is better than my current last year's model 2.53ghz.
I already have the non-removable battery. The ram has not changed. Nothing else seems to have changed much...unless I am missing something.
Please help with any suggestions. Thank you!

In the past I have upgraded my computer every year...
If you've been in the habit of doing that, and you still have the bottom-end 15" MBP of the last generation, then you must be well accustomed to seeing very little bang for your upgrade buck. If you were to do it again now by buying the bottom-end i5, that very small increment of benefit would be repeated.
I can (just barely) understand someone who feels a real compulsion to be out on the bleeding edge all the time upgrading his or her computer annually, but for someone who obviously doesn't have a burning psychic or practical need to own the whizziest whizbang on the block, it seems like a real waste of money to upgrade every year from the bottom of the old line to the bottom of the new one. I strongly recommend that you wait at least another year, buy a midrange new machine, and plan to upgrade it every two to three years instead of annually.

    None.
Why would you think he would get a discount?

  • 13-inch, Late 2011 Macbook Pro and Thunderbold Display...

    Hello Dear Users,
First I wish you have a nice new year with full of health, happiness and wealth, then i am asking my question:
I am using a 13-inch, Late 2011 MacBook Pro having
    Processor  2,8 GHz Intel Core i7 2 cores+2 HTs
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
specifications, setup with double Thunderbold Displays.
I sometimes feel that mac's display performance is marvelous and sometimes I feel like I am looking at an old school, blury screen. Is there anybody feels like I feel. I have doubts about screen performance. Well I searched on internet before to write but I could not express what I feel on google search for example. So, I am writing here what I feel. Sorry for my English if I could not express what I meant.
Thak you, and have a nice new year.....
    Levent

I've been having the exact same issue, same monitor and same laptop.  I spoke to a couple Apple techs on the phone and took my mbp to a genius bar last night, thinking it might be a video card issue since the blocks were also showing up on my macbook's screen. It of course failed to replicate at the store, even with a TB display hooked up.
After this I finally realized it was an issue with the monitor and not the laptop, since it only happened when they were connected (duh... I never checked with them disconnected)
I was able to make it go away temporarily by pushing the cables on the back of the display firmly in, but a few hours later I noticed a couple blocks popping up again.. however it wasn't as bad as before.  Seems to me it must be some issue with the hardwired power/tb connetor.

  • I'd like to replace my hard drive.  How do I know what to buy for my 15-inch early 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am out of room on my hard drive.  I'd like to get a new hard drive and restore my data to the new drive from Time Machine.  How do I know what kind of hard drive to buy for my 15-inch, early 2008 MacBook Pro?  Also, how hard is this to do?

I have changed HDDs several times on the old MBP.  Currently it has a Hitachi 500 GB HDD that came out of my new one.  My adage is that one cannot have too much storage and I think that the 1TB HDD is an excellent choice.  Not only do you get generous capacity, the performance should be (theoretically) comparable to a 750 GB 7200 rpm HDD.  I will be very surprised if there are compatibility problems.
If you bought the HDD from OWC, you should have received Installation instructions.  If not, go to the OWC website and look at the video.  I actually downloaded it so that I could hand write the instructions down step by step.  Also check out iFixit website.  They have step by step instructions that may prove to be useful.
Tools you need:  00 Phillips and #6 Torx Drivers (get good ones).   The instructions make mention of a plastic pry bar (spudger).  I use a stiff piece of plastic like a credit card.
Tips to keep in mind:  Get a large open table space and place a large clean towel on it.  That will protect your MBP and when you drop a screw (and you will) it will not bounce far so you will not have to spend an hour looking for it.
As you take out a set of screws, keep them together (I use wide masking tape.  The little screws will stick to it.)
Keep the sets in sequence.  That will make reassembly much, much easier.
The most difficult steps are removing the keyboard from the MBP body and removing the ribbon cable from the mother board.  In case of the former, work from the back (the display) to the front.  You will initially have to pry it up and then do a lot of jiggling to remove it.  Don't be too timid about it.  At the end of the ribbon cable there is a rectangular connector.  Use your credit card to remove it.  Just pry it off.
The #6 Torx driver is used to take off the 4 mounting pins on the HDD and if I remember correctly there is another place where it is needed, specifically in the battery compartment ( I think).  If the instructions don't say so, keep that in mind and inspect the screw before you select the driver.
Good luck and make sure that you don't have parts left over.
    Ciao.

I can't transfer my info from my old Macbook (Year 2006) to my new MacBook Pro. The Fire Wire Cable changed !
Excuse my English, I am French writing from Paris, France
    Thanks

All you need, if you've the non-Retina model, is a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> such as this one from Amazon.
I know that there's a UK Amazon - can you order from there? Or is there a French Amazon as well?
    Good luck,

  • Will this operating system kill my 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am working with the last operating system and it seems to have slowed this computer down considerably. Will this new Yosemite OS kill my MacBook Pro from 2008? I do not want to download anything that is going to slow this machine down anymore. It's already lethargic enough as it's configured now.

Time to do some serious house cleaning.
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

I purchased the Microsoft Office last September at an Apple Store. I recently had to bring my MacBook Pro back to the store because of some issues. Reboot caused me to lose Office and I no longer have the passcode. Where can I find my duplicate code? I no longer have the receipt so I can not call the business to find my duplicate code. Looking back at my bank statements, this purchase was quite spendy so I hope I will not have to purchase it again if possible! Any advice would be great!

It should be on a stickerthat says product key on the inner sleeve inside the bos which the disc comes in.

  • Is there a way to digitize audio using the headphone input on the 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with Retina display?

I'd like to digitize audio from a minidisc player into my 15-inch (late 2013) Macbook Pro with retina display, but can't see a way to change the internal mic input.  I understand that previous MacBooks allowed the headphone jack to double as a mic input, but mine doesn't seem capable of switching.  I've tried using a mini to mini cable, with no luck, and also tried using a headset splitter adapter (3.5 mm 4-pin to 2x3-pin 3.5 mm headset splitter adapter from Amazon) because I read that that would allow me to plug in headphones and input audio.  But in both cases, the only "input" available in my sound preferences is the built-in internal microphone.  Am I missing something?  Is there a way to digitize audio through the headphone jack?

Not likely. headphone jacks are usually output only devices unless specifically stated to support input, and even then, it may not be audio input that they support, but merely control input for volume and such.
You can get a USB audio input instead. i.e:

You should be able to.  As long as you are signed in to the same AppleID that has an available balance.  The services are linked.

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.

2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

This is a scam. Do not phone these people, at best they will charge you for unnecessary 'cleaning' and at worst they will gain access to your Mac and steal your data. You've probably managed to install some 'adware' which is producing this fake warning. 'Adwaremedic' should remove it and is safe to use - please see
