Late 08 MBP suddenly resets with no apps running...

Ok so I was running Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, I had a single 500x699 image open, at the same time I was running Windows XP under Paralles 4.0
and had one program running in that.
Suddenly, as I press the ok button to save my picture in Photoshop the entire screen goes light blue, and then after a moment my desktop loads again.
However Windows/Paralles, and Photoshop have closed. I reopen Photoshop, and reload my picture, it never saved.
So I hide Photoshop and I re-open Paralles.
When I do, windows appears in a window(the mode I had it in before) and it is running as if I had simply hidden it(right-click the icon on the dock...) so I save my work on there and try to shutdown windows, however, my computer once again goes blue then loads my desktop and has nothing running.
I open Paralells again and it shows the shutdown screen for windows and plays the log-off sound.
At this point I close Paralles completely and open the activity Monitor, which shows that my free memory is a ~243MB out of my 4GB of RAM.
This doesn't make much sense as there are no programs running.
Also my VM is 130GB, and my HD's free space is only ~133GB. at this point I reset my computer and then open activity monitor again, my memory usage is back to normal but my VM is now 140GB! more than my HD's Free space. It has since reduced to ~132GB over the course of me writing this message.
I'm sorry this is so long, but I have no Idea why this happened, and my 1-year warranty is up on oct 31st so if there is a problem, I need to know.
I am running OS X 10.6.1 and also Over the past 24 I have streamed ~120 youtube videos both on os x and windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Well, mine does turn off....eventually. It is now longer. It can take anywhere from 8 seconds to many many minutes to turn off. However, unlike the OP, disabling location services does completely shut down location services.
In my case,  It is not one app and it is also inconsitent. I just did a restore from backup and reset my privacy and location settings. Will see how that goes, but it always happens at the worst possible time when I am on the road using Apple or Google maps, and Waze, Beat the Traffic, or Inrix. I've tried disabling each of them and using just the one and still lags big time. All this after 6.1 update.
If this is a software issue, I am ok with that. Eventually it will be fixed; however, if it is a hardware problem I have to get it sent back to Apple for a replacement.

  • Will it hurt my iPhone 4 to leave on with navigation app running during vacation driving?

Getting ready to go on vacation and have downloaded a nav app and was wondering if it would hurt phone if I left it on during trip with nav app running?  I have car charger so I am not worried about batt running out.  Do not have to have it on all the time but wondering if anyone knew if it would hurt phone.  Thanks.

No, it won't hurt the phone - that's exactly the type of usage these apps are designed for.
The battery will run down quicker and the phone may get warm whilst plugged in, but it won't harm it.

  • Why would a late 2008 MBP not boot with 10.8?

I have a late 2008 MBP I update from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 and it refused to boot, although it would safe boot. So I tried a clean 10.7.5 install still would not boot. Again happy to boot into safe mode.
Next tried a clean 10.8 install again it will only boot into safe mode.
Booting into verbose mode it fails at the bluetooth, so i tried disabling the bluetooth extensions, still no joy.
    Any ideas?

    Hey Sig,
I ran all the usally disk repairs and permissions repairs. It still will not boot in normal mode in any OSX above 10.7.4. I assume they have change a driver or extention that is causing a conflict. Its very fustrating as others seem to be running ML on the seem hardware with no problem.
    cheers

  • Late 2007 MBP graphics glitch with files/folder in finder

After the 10.5.6 update everything worked smoothly. Since a restart when moving files and folders within the finder now I have a graphical glitch. The file/folder being moved appears randomly cut, (both text and icon are missing a random squarish chunk of the file/folder image when dropped to another location anywhere in the finder). There is also more than usual delay. I am not having this occur with item on the desktop. Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

Then there's a conflict or corruption in the original account, usually amongst the various preference files. How badly do you want fix this problem? Here's what's required to resolve the conflict/corruption (sorry I have no idea which preference file (plist) might be mucked up, but you can do a cursory check with Preferential Treatment at http://www.jonn8.com/html/pt.html
While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Since IOS 4.3.3 My Ipod Touch 4th Gen 64GB fully discharges on standby in less than 6hrs with no apps running. How can I fix it?

I've followed all the suggestions for saving the battery life but the battery still discharges very quickly. The only way I can stop it discharging is by turning the ipod off, which sort of defeats the object!
It's been suggested that I totally reset the ipod as new and then set it up again from scratch. Does anyone now how likely this is to help, as it will take rather a long time?

    Looks like good news!
I finally bit the bullet and did a reset as new.
It was a total pain as you can imagine, but it wasn't the end of the world to go through i-tunes reselecting the apps etc to sink (it was actually a pretty useful exercise because my ipod was full of apps I didn't really use!).
Anyway, it's been off the charger now for nearly five hours and I've been using it for bits and pieces like, the calculator, internet search over wifi, map viewing etc. and the battery is showing 97%!!! All setting are as per the default start up. I haven't changed brightness or anything like that.
Interestingly, now when it goes into standby, the router shows that the wifi link has dropped. When I then wake it again the link restarts after a few miliseconds. This didn't used to happen before.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will see how it goes over the weekend and report back on Monday!

  • If my iPhone is missing, but still on somewhere with several apps running (including fb, myspace and hotmail), is there any way i can remotely find its location?, is there

I have no clue where it is, but I found out from Verizon that no calls have been made from it since I lost it. It is running Yelp, Myspace, Hotmail, Facebook, and a few other apps. Wish I had installed Find My iPhone or gMail... now I know.
I wish there was a way I could remotely download Find My iPhone to it now since it's on. Can't though, even with iCloud.
Is there any website that can help me find it? The Apple and Verizon Stores keep cross-recommending each other.

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do without already having the app on your phone.
Having the "Find my iPhone" app on the phone wouldn't help locate it at all. The App is only for locating one iOS device from another. It does nothing to assist locating the device the app is installed on.
For a phone to be trackable, the MobileMe account has to be configured on the device, Location Services needs to be on, the phone needs power and a it needs a network connection.

  • Is there a command to open an application menu because on other peoples macs i saw them open a little bar in the center of there screen with 4 apps running and i have did that before but on accident and i did not know what i clicked. how do i open it?

    HELP! I WANT TO KNOW!

Mission Control? It isn't a little bar in the center of the screen but does display the running apps. You can access it via the Control+Up arrow key combination and there are preferences for it in System Preferences.

  • Using 7GB of memory on startup with no apps running

I have a 2009 macbook 13inch with 1TB HDD and 8GB Ram running yosemite, mavericks before it, and mavericks was not better or worse
it is constantly running out of memory
i have "memory clean" running (which is insanely good and free) so it flushes it out otherwise it would be unusable
when i start up it is using 7GB of memory, sometime a wee bit less but not much
the 2 biggest offenders are "backupd" and "kernel" processes. you see them in activity monitor
kernel is kind of fundamental and i believe that backupd is time machine
i killed backupd and now i have 4.25GB of memory used with only iTunes and safari open (1 tab - this one)
there are well over 100 process running just from startup probably closer to 150
cpu is using less than 15%
i have 160GB free on my HDD
so what is occurring? and how do i get it to behave like a normal macbook?
if your response starts with "i don't know, but". or any derivation there of, please stop typing and go a help an old person across the road :-)

Perhaps the CPU is stuck running cycles, trying to figure out how to restore
all those Caches and other important stuff you've used some third-party
unnecessary software to delete? By pre-loading many simple OS X tasks,
the system does well enough to take on chores for daily use on its own.
Has the Console utility's system logs shed some light on how this RAM is
being used? What of the limited info in Activity Monitor, which is less open
about where these resources have gone, than previous OS X versions?
You may see about some command-line interface sleuthing to get into OS X
underpinnings to check; there are several items in OS X  Developer library
to read up on. Helpful if you have more than one Mac and have a viable 2nd
computer not running the latest OS X just in case a new upgrade isn't a good
way to go just yet. Not all computer models appreciate a newest system install.
{If you have a backup from before the last upgrade of OS X, that may be an
idea to revert to that; a full system clone on external drive, a bootable copy,
    is helpful to restore previous system function, or to offer a way back.}
Sometimes the system log files can help illuminate issues such as kernel
problems, and other hung processes that may hog CPU cycles, & RAM.
What brand of 'clean' have you been submitting your OS X hidden parts, to?
Some do more than clean, they toss out vital system parts & essential caches.
Maybe someone with command-line experience such as Linc Davis could
help you, if he sees your thread. If so, there are tedious testing intervals to
see what is going on; not necessarily to cure the issue but to outline a cause.
Diagnostic testing may be required to see if there are any hardware causes
to the symptoms; but a new installation may help. If the problems have been
saved in a Time Machine backup, then be aware you can re-introduce them
from there should you rely on that to restore your current system & files.
There are a few good ideas among these Guide pages to review:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/
Are there excessive items in your startup files, and other extensions installed
that could account for wasted RAM and system resources? You may wish to
check that out and delete or disable those.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My late 2011 MacBook Pro 4 gig RAM is running very slowly, crashing very often. Repaired permissions, repaired disc, updated to Mavericks, uninstalled Blackberry Desktop.  Can only run one app at a time, barely.

Activity monitor shows RAM usage at between 3 and 3.95 most of the time, even with no apps running.  Hard drive has plenty of free space.  Chrome crashes it the most, but any time I run more than two apps at a time, it crashes.  It cannot ever complete a Time Machine backup.  That leaves it dead in the water after a few minutes.  When I say crash, I mean totally unresponsive, even when left alone for hours.  Only a hard reset works.  Then, it is hit or miss when it comes to rebooting.  Often, it crashes at the startup login screen, and often it doesn't even make it that far.  Sometimes, the computer spontaneously restarts itself.  I've looked at the forums, and tried everything that I've seen suggested. I've left it alone overnight, hoping that it was just indexing, but no dice. I even used the sudo purge command once.  That cleared up some RAM for a moment, but didn't affect the performance issues.  I am aware that the RAM usage may have nothing to do with it, but that's the only clue I have.  It is a miracle that I'm even able to finish typing this message, since right now I have Safari and Mail open at the same time!  I've turned off Drop Box.  Every application loads painfully slowly, and then any activity, including typing, is often interrupted by the spinning pinwheel of death.  Sometimes, the problem resolves for a few minutes, and then returns with a vengance.  Help!

  • Gaming Performance Increase from Late 2011 MBP to 11 or 13 MBA 2013?

I have a Late 2011 MBP 13,upgraded with 256 GB SSD and 6 GB RAM.
    I play mostly CS:S, SC2, WoW, D3 and that's about it.
I would like to be able to move into SimCity (After Aug 29 Launch Obviously), and perhaps DCUO and The Old Republic (VIA BootCamp)
Would I see a nice jump with the haswell chips in the MBA 2013 model?
If so I might jump, if not I am ok here right now, running wow at low with 30+ FPS.
Just curious, thanks for the advice!

The Late 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro has got an Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU, and the Mid 2013 13-inch MacBook Air has got an Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU.
The MacBook Air will work better with graphic tasks, but both of them are not ready for heavy use.
If you want to play games like those ones, the best thing you can do is to get a 15-inch MacBook Pro, which includes a quad-core processor and a NVIDIA GPU which will work correctly. The difference will be very big compared to the Mid 2013 MacBook Air.
Also, the MacBook Air is not ready for games. It overheats quickly, and high temperatures damage it. If you get the MacBook Air, don't set high values in games, and make sure that the games you want to play support integrated graphic cards

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

  • MBP suddenly slow/lagging - pls somebody skilled with EtreCheck tell me what's wrong?

I love ASC for hands-on advice to try oneself however this time I am in it too deep: My sons MBP suddenly became lagging and unresponsive/very very slow... ie. the swirl-thing comes up 1-2 secs AFTER clicking the apple-icon and the menu yet another 6-10 secs. Below is a copy from EtreCheck, pls help me understand it - never used it before.. My other MBPs could be optimized as well but at least they perform ok... this one is bad. Who to blame? 1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Late 2011 MBP i7 gets slow with and after Aperture

My first post, please pardon my ignorance. I have read similar threads but I believe my situation is a bit different.
Anyway, my late 2011 MBP i7 4GB ram, running on SL gets very slow after I open/browse/edit in Aperture. The system does page out to 1.3 gb. When using Safary and email, it becomes very painfull even after I close out the Aperture. The whole system becomes laggy and menus become delayed. The only solution is to reboot and my mac is back like new until I open the Aperture again. Every program is up to date and only about 160gb out of 500gb HDD being used.
Heres what I've done so far:
    1. long hardware test checked ok
    2. NVRAM reset
    3. downloaded Kasperski and found no viruses
    4. rebuild/repair aperture database
    5. ordered 8gb crucial ram, should be in in a few days
Is it due to not having enough RAM? My previous 2006 MBP Core 2 Due was almost as fast running on Lion and 4GB ram. I would expect a significant speed increase on my 4 core i7, but unfortunately it's not the case.

Paging out to 1.3 gig effectively means that a lot of stuff is sitting in virtual memory on your hard disk.  The i7 is great for improving the speed of whatever is in memory, but anything that is paged out is limited to the performance of the HDD and SATA bus.
The cheapest and most effective first step is to max out your RAM. It's a modest investment that will benefit you immensely. The second step is to replace mechanical disks with SSDs. Currently, this is a pricy proposition, but the performance improvement can be nearly 100% over a mechanical drive system.
At the end of the day, it's about how much money you want to spend to go as fast as you can afford.
