Late 2005; SMU Reset silenced the machine!

Wow, effective to say the least.
I suffered from a various Fan noise problems, it was like nearly all the fans were not running in heir noise optimum state/rpm's
I pressed the SMU reset button and voila, almost ALL noises are gone now. I actually started hearing beep noise of high pitch just to discover it was my ADSL modem.
The machine is nearly whisper silent now, the problems i used to have were Whirring noise from somewhere, Pulsating fan noise (clearly audiable), Ringing noise from HD Bay fan, SLOT intake fan was generally scratchy and other odd sounds that were clearly audiable.
The only thing i can hear is the default idle noise of a G5, i am certain. I really recommend this procedure to anyone with a Late 2005 G5 and suffering from any fan noise problems.

Its near the memory modules, behind the intake fans, 5cm right from the battery.
Remember to press it only once!

  • Powermac G5 quad - where ist the SMU-Reset Button?

my G5 quad is very fast, but too loud. The Main Logic Board Backside Fan increases speed after maximal 5 Minutes up to 3000 rpm, even if the quad really does nothing. I tried to reset the SMU by removing the power cord, but no difference.
An Apple instructor sent me this:
"To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computer, either use the steps listed above for the Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or:
Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Open and remove both the metallic outer door and the inner plastic air deflector.
Remove the fan assembly immediately to the left of the processor module.
Press the SMU reset button on the logic board.
Replace the fan assembly, air deflector, and outer door.
    Turn on the computer."
…but I can't find the SMU reset button. Can anybody help me?

    Hello
Choose "turn off" in the Apple menu, unplug the power cord, open the side door, unplug the lower fan, put your hands on the Quad Tower Case before you touch the SMU Button, then push the button only one time.
Here is a Picture from a Dual-Core 2.0, should be on the same place:

Apples Knowledgebase Article says it works also like for older Late 2004 G5's. A little confusing for me.

  • Frequent need for smu reset and restart

What could be causing this? A little background: Everything had been fine for some time, than just recently have had problems with this iMac. I had 2 gigs of crucial ram that appeared to go bad in the last two weeks, evidenced by kernel panics. Replaced that with the old chip (512 megs) that I was able to get to work. Now from time to time, the computer will freeze and the fan noise will get very loud. This is solved by a restart. Frequently, especially after the computer has been shut down overnite, I need to do an smu reset (unplug the power cord for 10 seconds, plug it back in with the power button held down, then restart.)

I opened up the back of the computer. There are no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there is maybe one that is a little bulging on top. I then took apart the power supply and visually inspected the capacitors. There were no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there were two where the top was a little bit bulging.
I examined the LEDs on the motherboard. They seem fine.
I am still getting the odd kernel panic. I booted up from the install disk and attempted to do a disk repair and got an error saying "invalid key for thread record".
So I am really perplexed. This computer is nearly 5 years old, and while I would love to get it working reliably, I wonder if I am at the point of diminishing returns, in other words don't throw good money after bad. I have read that DiskWarrior might be useful, but that is $100. Power supply might be bad, hard drive might be going, and I'm not even sure if that is the entire extent of the problem!!!

  • Resetting the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)

    Guys,
I was just reading the "How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004/2005)" page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341 and am now a little confused.
I own a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), and every night before bed I turn it off and take the power plug out of the wall. In the instructions to resetting the SMU on a Power Mac G5, it states to remove the power cord from the computer for 15 seconds and then plug it back in.
By me always taking the power away from the computer, is this resetting the SMU every time? If so, can this cause problems?
    Regards,
    Daniel

Presuming that you are referring to the 'relay click' sound when the G5 is first connected to mains power -
I have not seen an Apple Official mention of this initial relay sound, let alone an explanation of what the initial relay does; but, over the course of two years in the G5 Usage forum, the absence of it is invariably bad news for the Power Supply Unit(PSU)(or other major bits). So - yes, it is supposed to happen.
If you have no economic or environmental objections, and you can arrange for the G5 to remain plugged-in and the mains turned on, that should alleviate premature internal battery drain.
Personally... I leave it plugged-in because the G5 is on a UPS, and also it would mean foraging in the jungle of wiring under the desk...
BTW If you don't already - as the G5 is not on 24/7 the OS X maintenance scripts will not run; you may wish to consider running 'sudo periodic' from Utilities - Terminal occasionally - as explained in the thoughts of Dr. Smoke here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
    Trust this helps.

  • I I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I have a late 2005 power PC G5 that I want to bring back to life.  I need to replace the original hard drive, a Maxtor 250 GB Sata.  Can I replace it with modern drives, SATA 5-6 etc?

I knew I should never get rid of my old G5's.  By the way, there is a browser still supported for the PPC, TenFourFox, if you're not using it already.  Go to the Floodgap website (they author it)  download it for free.  The only thing it doesn't support is the Flash plugin, but the browser works great. Other video types are supported.  It's based on Firefox, and runs most of the plugins and add-ons. It's very fast, and beats all other browsers on the browser compatibility and speed test.  That's now my default on my G5's.  Firefox and Safari are no longer supported.  As far as the OS, both Tiger and Leopard were solid for me.  The reason, as I stated before, was iMovie.  The version in Tiger with iLife was far superior to what Apple changed it to.  They 'dumbed it down' for the masses.  Even the newest iLife 11 on my Mac Pro quad isn't is good, in my opinion.  So Leopard should be fine for you.  It's a much larger browser in terms of sheer megabytes and disk space, but it's fine.  As far as getting an OS disc, I'm seeing Tiger for about $45.00, Leopard for $50 - 60.00 on that famous auction site.  As far as RAM, I have 8GB in my G5 2.3, but you should check Activity Monitor when you are running your apps.  See how much green slice you have left (unused RAM).  You might find you don't need eight.  A Mac Pro will grab more free RAM than a PPC machine will.  I have a hard time maxing out use of my 8 on the PPC.  Not true with the eight on my Mac Pro.  The OS doesn't hesitate to grab and use it.  You might be OK with 6GB on your PPC. More will not make you faster, as long as you still have free RAM available.  As far as backup on your resurrected machine:  look for a firewire enabled backup if can.  Use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and make a clone backup.  Next time your PPC machine wipes out the hard drive, just take your Firewire drive and plug it into another PPC machine, and you can select it as your boot drive. You'll be back and running in five minutes.  You can also take the physical drive out of your enclosure, and put it in your tower to replace the failed drive, and you'll be back to where you were in less than ten minutes, OS and all.  The PowerMac has an 800 port, so you can do the 800 on the machine to an 800 port on your backup. A firewire 800 to 800 cable is only about $8.00.  It runs nice and fast through the 800 port.  I like the OWC Mercury Extreme enclosures.  They use USB, Firewire 800, and eSATA, so all your options are open.

  • Several times after restarting Final Cut X was very slow and it always kept repeating rendering on same three clips. Later it stops rendering on every restart and the machine was normal and faster. Now it keeps crushing on every restart

My Final Cut X changed behaviour after conneting the external monitor via HDMI. Several times after restarting Final Cut X was very slow and it always kept repeating rendering on same three clips after every restart. Later the dual screen icon disapeared on the top of my screen and it stops rendering on every restart like before and the machine was normal and faster. Now Final Cut won't start anymore whenever I start it loads and crushes immediately on every restart.

A few people have reported problems with the hand gestures since IOS 8. It's not normal, I have don't have the problem on my iPad 4.  I doubt it's a major problem but if it happens regularly I'd have it checked out by the Genius bar at the Apple Store.

I would like to update to time capsule. My existing airport extreme is connected to 4 airport express around the house. If I install capsule, do I have to reset all express machines or will it work automatically?
    Thanks!

You need to start over.. the MAC addresses are different.. if you try it will fail.. even with the same names and same IP addresses because it is not the same box.. it is much better to start over.
And even use a wholly different naming structure.. short.. 2-20 characters no spaces.. and pure alphanumerics.
It doesn't take long really to redo it.

  • Does Mac still sell the power cables for the late 2005 version of these?

I recently purchased a PowerMac but the pervious owner did not have the power cable. I assumed it would be no problem and that I could take a power cord from one of my other Macs, but I now see that this late 2005 model has a different socket then most macs it is square with horizontaly running bars and looks like [--_--]. I want to know if Mac still makes replacements for these and if they sell them at the Mac stores.

If you want to reset your Apple ID password, you can do it from this link: https://iforgot.apple.com/
If your old password is wrong even here, than use the Apple Support Lane that can be found right here: https://expresslane.apple.com/
    Good luck.

  • I need a password to reset my Time Machine but I cannot find one. How do I get the TM working again.

I changed the location of my TM (and my modem)  My back up has repeatedly said "backup failed". Trying to exit from my asigned disk and re-boot required a password. I have tried many that I have used but w.o. success.  Where do I go from here?

Full factory reset. You don't need to do it via software.. you do it on the TC.. no password required.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
A factory reset is always required when you move network gear around.
Just to repeat.. your backups are fine.. so you can still reconnect to them.

  • TS4036 I purchased the iPhone 5 and did a backup to my 4S before I made the change and did a full reset on the 4S.  How do I get everything that i backed up via iCloud on my new phone as it still ha not restored 2 weeks later?

I purchased the iPhone 5 and upgraded from the 4S.  I backed up the 4S to iCloud before I did a full reset on the 4S.  My iPhone 5 has still not restored to the backup from the 4S and it has been 2 weeks since the change.  How do I get my iPhone 5 to sync to the backup I did on the 4S 2 weeks ago?

You would have to essentially start again.
    Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Contents And Settings
This will take the handset right back to the original setup, where you will find an option to Restore From iCloud Backup.
