Late 2006 MacBook Pro and Lion

Late 2006 MacBook Pro (2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo w/ 3 GB RAM).
I'd like to run Lion on it so I can use iCloud to sync calendars, contacts etc between it and my Mac Pro, iPad and iPhone
MacBook Pro is old I know, but I'm not at the stage of being able to replace it. It's currently running Leopard. I'm getting different answers from Apple as to whether it could run Lion or or not.
Anyone had experience running Lion on an older machine like this?
Thanks!

Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
     Snow Leopard General Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
       2. 1GB of memory
       3. 5GB of available disk space
       4. DVD drive for installation
       5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
           fees may apply.
       6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
           terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
     Lion System Requirements
       1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
           or Xeon processor
       2. 2GB of memory
       3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
       4. 7GB of available space
       5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I tried to do a reinstall of Tiger 10.4.5 from my start up disk.  I get an error that states "can't install on this computer." HELP

I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I used the disk utility and erased the drive and formatted it to OSX Journaled .  When I tried to install the OS from the start up disks I got the error "Can't install on this computer.  I have verified the drive.
I have used Super Duper to copy my old drive to my new drive.  But I wanted to do a fresh install.  How do I go about this?

Did you do the Super Duper clone before you tried to reinstall the OS? If so, the original install disc is likely earlier than 10.4.11, and that may be why you are getting the message.
When trying to reinstall the OS, did you select the "Archive and Install" option? If not, you might try that. Here's a link that might help:

I have late 2011 Macbook Pro and the zxcv keys are no longer working. Once I connect USB keyboard I can utilize these keys. Do anyone have solution?

How did you try to use Acitivty Monitor?
Open Activity Monitor, choose "All processes" from the list, and sort processes by CPU usage. More likely than not, there will be task using up good bit of CPU.
You could also try resetting SMC:

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) backlight keyboard not functioning properly?

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and for some reason, the automatic backlight keyboard will not funtion as it should. When I have the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option enabled in settings, and I turn on the lights, my backlight keyboard stays at full brightness. Then, when I turn off the keyboard, then the lights, the keyboard does not turn on! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am pretty sure that this was a feature in the MBP lines.

Try a SMC reset.   Shut down the computer. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer.   Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Which HDD in Late 2006 Macbook Pro

I've just read about the HDD repair extension program (http://www.apple.com/nl/support/macbook/hd/repairextension/)
Unfortunately this doesn't apply to the MacBook Pro. Though my MBP suffered from the same symptoms about 2 years after I bought it. Does anyone know what type of harddrive the late 2006 MBP come with? I wonder if it's the same as in the faulty MacBooks.

Here's the drive my December 2006 MacBook Pro came with:
    HITACHI Travelstar 7K100 HTS721010G9SA00 100GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s
    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16822146053
I don't know anything about the faulty drives but my drive has been going strong for over 3 years and it's had a ton of use. However, I am looking to upgrade it because I need more space.

  • 13-inch, Late 2011 Macbook Pro and Thunderbold Display...

    Hello Dear Users,
First I wish you have a nice new year with full of health, happiness and wealth, then i am asking my question:
I am using a 13-inch, Late 2011 MacBook Pro having
    Processor  2,8 GHz Intel Core i7 2 cores+2 HTs
    Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
specifications, setup with double Thunderbold Displays.
I sometimes feel that mac's display performance is marvelous and sometimes I feel like I am looking at an old school, blury screen. Is there anybody feels like I feel. I have doubts about screen performance. Well I searched on internet before to write but I could not express what I feel on google search for example. So, I am writing here what I feel. Sorry for my English if I could not express what I meant.
Thak you, and have a nice new year.....

I've been having the exact same issue, same monitor and same laptop.  I spoke to a couple Apple techs on the phone and took my mbp to a genius bar last night, thinking it might be a video card issue since the blocks were also showing up on my macbook's screen. It of course failed to replicate at the store, even with a TB display hooked up.
After this I finally realized it was an issue with the monitor and not the laptop, since it only happened when they were connected (duh... I never checked with them disconnected)
I was able to make it go away temporarily by pushing the cables on the back of the display firmly in, but a few hours later I noticed a couple blocks popping up again.. however it wasn't as bad as before.  Seems to me it must be some issue with the hardwired power/tb connetor.

John, please refrain from posting your personal email in these threads.  It is not necesary and all communication to you can be done directly in these forums.  Posting your email address can open up you to tons of unwanted spam, among other things.  Really all you can do is search the internet for them.  My suggestion would be to google "case for late 2007 macbook pro".
One will probably be very hard to find for a 6 year old model as it is on the borderline of being considered "vintage".  Ebay may be a good place to try too.

  • Just updated from a late 2008 Macbook Pro and I am getting a blink on my external screen

I just upgraded from a late 2008 Macbook Pro with a  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB graphics card and I am now getting a blink (black screen) every few seconds.
    Anyone know a fix.
    Thanks

You could always give it a shot - the only problem that you might run into is that the the early 2011 might not boot when the hard drive is swapped from the 2008 hard drive. Some versions of OS X are simply not compatible between different models.
    But it's worth a try...

  • Purchased a used Late 2011 Macbook Pro and cannot get find my Mac to work. What do I need to do?

So I purchased a used late 2011 Macbook Pro from a friend. I am trying to get the find my Mac app set up but it won't let me because I believe he still has it as one of his devices. I texted him a couple days ago to ask him to remove it, but it doesn't seem he has or is in any rush to do that. I was debating re-installing the entire OS to give myself a fresh start. Will this give me the ability to set my computer up on the find my Mac app or is it tied to something more than the hard drive/OS.

I actually think I will be upgrading the hard drive size. So to confirm, when I reinstall the OS on this new hard drive, I will be able to add this as my own device within the Find my Mac app?
Yes, after you zero out the drive.
    Which os is installed?
Just out of curiousity, what happens on my friends end to this device?
It's your friends problem not yours.  Your friend will have to get his "Find my Mac" app.

  • 15" (late 2008) macbook pro and 30" cinema display??

Im looking to buy one of the new macbook pros, and I know that you need the$100 dual link cable to get it to work with the older apple displays.
With that cable what is the max resolution I will get on a 30" cinema display?
The max res for the 30" is 2560 x 1600 pixels, but I have heard that you may not be able to get real high rez with the 15"
anyone know, I would appreciate the help....
    -bill

You'll get 2560 x 1600 - that's the max resolution of the display, and it's the max resolution of dual-link DVI (at least, at the standard refresh rate).

  • Late 2006 MacBook Pro or Aluminium MacBook?

Hello everyone, I recently picked up a late 2006, 2.33GHz 15" MacBook Pro at a very good price - and it's a great bit of kit. However, I also just found (and bought) a late 2008 aluminium 2GHz MacBook at a very good price too.
I obviously don't need both machines and I have found both machines are by far good enough for what I need them for.
I've had to 'hack' Mountain Lion on to the MBP as it's not officially supported whereas the MacBook runs it natively. The MacBook Pro has the discrete X1600 w/ 256mb VRAM. The MacBook has the integrated 9400M w/ 256MB VRAM. The MacBook can take 8GB DDR3 RAM, the MacBook Pro can only take 3GB DDR2. The MacBook Pro has a quicker (clocked) Core 2 Duo processor, but the MacBook has a newer iteration. They both have backlit keyboards (the MacBook was a BTO). The MacBook Pro has a far nicer keyboard (IMO) but I use it/them at the desk with the 20" Cinema Display most of the time anyway.
What MacBook do I keep, and what one do I sell? They're both lovely machines, the MacBook Pro was obviously much more high-end at the time, but the MacBook has newer technologies (DDR3, more recent gen. CPU, Mountain Lion etc.) & although it has the unibody construction, it's still super easy to get open to upgrade this & that. Thanks.

"I've had to 'hack' Mountain Lion on to the MBP as it's not officially supported ..."
Please refrain from posting in these forums if you are going to allow that you've hacked Apple software. At this sentence I stopped reading your post and am out of here.
