Late 2007 iMac powering off randomly

Ok, so I made a thread a year ago about this problem. Basically, my iMac about eight months after purchasing it (on the 13/10/07), started randomly shutting down and restarting. After a few months, it then couldn't be powered up at all. I sent it away to be fixed under warranty (2/10/08), the repair diagnosis claiming it was a faulty PSU. After about another 4 months of operating the computer with no problems, the exact same problem has arisen again. I've tried all suggestions on the iMac support site and they only work very temporarily.
I had heard that Nvidia had made faulty chips for computers around this time. Could this potentially be the problem? I don't want to spend $320 on a new power supply to find that the exact same problem will occur a few months after repair.
My model number is: MA877X/A

What I'm referring to is the power coming into the house from your local power company. Sometimes this power fluctuates and has small spike that may not be seen on other devices such as blinking 12:00on your alarm clock. This is why a lot of people us a UPS (Uninterpretable Power Supply) to safe guard not only from storms but from power spikes from the locally supplied power.
It is not rare for this to cause power supply problems in Mac or PC's. Is it your problem maybe not, but as you said... two power supplies one right after another... well it's something to think about.
And yes it could be the power cord:

May not be frying the Power supply but may be the cause of current problems.

  • HT201343 can i update late 2007 imac to run apple tv?

I have late 2007 Imac running osx 10.6.8.  I would like to run apple Tv.  How can I do that?  Do I need to upgrade to the new Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You only need a computer with the Apple TV if you are going to use your iTunes Library with it. In which case the only requirement is iTunes 10.6 or better.
If you are talking about mirroring, your Mac can't do it.

  • IMac powers off during DVD playback, why?

Right now, since the last update and my Applestore repair, by iMac powers off everytime I watch a DVD. Doesn't matter which player, I've tried Front Row, DVD Player, VLC, and Realplayer. It will play for 30seconds - 5minutes, and then power off. No error message.
My drive completely failed a few weeks ago, so I brought it to the Apple Store. They held it hostage for over a week and replaced the drive, the drive cable, and the "smart board" or whatever they called it. Upon return the drive works as expected... except this issue.
I run my business from my Mac so I want to make sure there isn't a simple way to fix this before I go back into the Apple Store (1 hour away).
    Any ideas??

  • 500 GB internal HD in late 2007 iMac?

I need to purchase a new internal HD and found a 500 GB Hitashi from OWC. I am curious to know if my iMac (late 2007 20" 2.4 Ghz) will be compatible?

    Hello SpeAker-HeAd
I'm very happy with the WD Caviar Blue that replaced my factory installed 160GB Seagate HD a few months ago. I installed the new WD, booted from the clone on my Maxtor FireWire, set the partition scheme and format, then Restored from the clone with out a hitch.

  • After Mountain Lion install, my iMac powers off instead of just going to sleep. Help? Thanks.

After I installed Mountain Lion on my 2009 iMac, it will power off after I don't use it a while. It used to just go to sleep, I'd shake the mouse, and it would come back up. Now it powers off and I have to power it back up every time.
My Macbook has NOT had this problem since Mountain Lion install. It is fine.

Do these resets to clear errant commands:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Latest version of iMovie won't run on late 2007 iMac?

After successfully downloading and installing Mavericks, Appstore tells me to update iMovie to the latest version.  However when I try, it comes up and says "the video card on this computer cannnot support this version of iMovie" or soething to that effect.  The iMac is late 2007, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256MB.
Is this legit or a fluke?  If legit, can the video card be upgraded?  I forgot if it is a separate unit or on the main PCB.  Anybody know?
    Many thanks,

For anyopne else with this issue, there is a similar thread over on the iMovie section.  I'm trying the suggestion to copy an installation on a newer Mac over to the older one right now.  We'll se what happens.  I'll report back and close this thread if indeed it works...

  • Imac powering off by itself

    Hello,
This week my G5 20" iMac began powering off by itself. The CPU temperature is steady at around 70˚. I removed the back panel and cleaned the dust from all vents and fan ducts and it still powers off unexpectedly.
    Serial number: QP527011T9U
Will anyone make suggestions or recommendations of how to repair this issue?
Has anyone else had this problem? edit...looks like I am not the only one. I did not purchase apple care so I fear this may come out of my pocket. I hope not though. I just want it fixed!
    Any help is much appreciated.

Get yourself a firewire external drive, at least as large as your internal drive, then download SuperDuper!, which will make an exact bootable clone of your system. You can schedule automatic back-ups, and then be secure in the knowledge that whatever happens to your drive, you can have the contents at your finger tips. SD! also makes incremental back ups, changing on the clone only the data that has changed on your computer. This makes the backups (after the first one) very fast.
    Hope this helps,

  • MacBook Air (Late 2010) keeps shutting off randomly, sometimes when computer is tilted or moved

    Hi all,
I have a Late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air. I've had it pretty much since they started selling them at the Apple Store, or maybe a few months afterward. For probably a few years I had only used it once in a while, since I had a Windows laptop for work. Since this past December I have exclusively been using my MacBook Air, I have since given away the Windows computer.
Recently it has started shutting off randomly while I'm using it. I've tried resetting the PVRAM and the thing that manages how the power/screen works (I forget what its called), and that hasn't worked. I'll try to turn it back on again after it has shut off, and it sometimes doesn't come back on unless I tilt it a little bit. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue? Is it something I can probably fix, or should I take it to the Apple Store? Thanks for any and all feedback.

Since the PRAM and SMC reset didn't work and your screen only seems to work when the screen is tilted at a specific angle, it might be a hardware problem. If you're near an Apple Store, you should make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have someone look at it: http://concierge.apple.com/reservation/us/en/techsupport/

  • Can I use home sharing for AppleTV with Time Capsule and have my iMac powered off?

I wish to be able to use AppleTV without having my iMac powered on.  Is there a way to have my iTunes library on my Time Capsule so I can use AppleTV directly from it?

I use an external hard drive with my iMac and have an iTunes folder there (that sometimes it points to automatically, but sometimes I have to go under advanced and show the iMac to use that iTunes folder because it defaults to the internal iTunes folder on the computer).
Make sure the external drive is powered on and mounted on the desktop before launching iTunes.

  • IMAC Powering Off!

i am having issues with my Imac Powering down. i have had a tech review my computer and they say nothing is wrong.
current config is 20" Imac G5 Intel Core 2 Duo with most recent OS.
30" Apple Monitor run through DVI adaptor
    Epson Photo R2400 via Firewire
    original keyboard and mouse
has happened several times, do i need to have the firewire and usb cables for the monitor plugged in as well to assist in powering it?

PacNW, there is a service extension on the iMac G5 power supply. I am not sure based on your post what the issue is exactly, but check this:

As for veichh, post in the other part of the forum that is based on "configurations" as well as networking, etc...

  • IMac powered off while in use and won't power up, surge protected

iMac DV suddenly lost power while in use and will not power up. I've played with the power cord and reset button etc. but it's as thopugh it died of old age. Any ideas? Could it's internal battery cause this ? Where is it?
Is there a way that I can download from the hard drive without power?

Before you trash the Imac, I would get a new internal battery and try that and if that doesn't work I would try to get a new power supply, that sounds like the problem.
Also if you have another mac you can take the hard drive out of the dead Imac and put it into the other mac and get your important files off of it. HTH,Aaron

  • IMac Powers Off During XP Install

    Hi,
I've had a search of the forum, but couldn't find any issue like this.
Basically, during the XP install, my iMac will power off without any warning. I've tried re-creating the BC partition, carrying out the install with only a keyboard attached, even using two different XP discs ( one of which I used to install XP on my MacBook ).
    Anyone else had this happen?

Just thought I would post an update for this, as I've managed to get XP installed.
It took several attempts to get as far as the first reboot. Once I had done that, I booted back into OSX, and installed MacFUSE/ntfs-g3. I could now mount the BootCamp partition read/write. I copied the i386 directory from the XP CD, to the BootCamp partition, ejected the CD, and then rebooted.
With no CD in, setup prompted for the location of the i386 directory; I pointed it at C:\i386. The install progresses, and then it will prompt again. This time, I put the CD back in. The install carried on without issue.
    I then un-installed ntfs-3g, and MacFUSE....
    Hope this helps...

  • I need help my late 2007 imac will go black after I start it up ?

i Start the computer up it shows the grey aand the apple shows. it loads and then goes black and the cursor still shows. I was thinKing my graphics cards was shot But I booted it in recovery mode and to shows all the colors and acts like nothing's is wrong. Any idea?

You need to methodically follow the steps in Gray screen appears during startup
If the machine doesn't work after the final step Apple advises to take it in for repair. You can still run Apple's Hardware Test in Extended Mode 2-3 times back to back, if errors appear then that confirms it is hardware but will not tell you what is wrong exactly.
If it does turn out to be hardware you may want to consider replacing it, after all it's close to 8 years old.
