LATE 2007 MACBOOK STILL CRACKING

I have a late 2007 13 inch macbook that I bought about two months ago. About a month after I got it, the bottom case started splintering around the ports, followed shortly by a hairline crack perpendicular to the escape key. I took it to a Mac store and they told me it was accidental damage. I called Mac and talked to a specialist and the specialist told me they would fix it if i sent it in.
Everything was fixed for free by mac. I have now had it for about another month and another crack has developed around the battery on the bottom case. Is anyone else having this problem with their Late 2007 Macbook? I thought these problems were resolved. I am also having palm rest discoloration...this isn't supposed to still happen either...is it?

I have had this issue twice with my Macbook which I bought in August 2007, the first time was less then 2 weeks after I had my machine so they replaced it with a brand new machine, the second time was just recently and they claimed that the damage wasn't covered by my Applecare. However the second time the cracks occurred I had brought my Macbook in to fix a crack in the palmrest (the second time I have had to fix this, thankfully that damage is covered as it is a well known issue with the Macbooks), the hairline cracks on my macbook weren't there before I sent my notebook in but when I recieved it there were hairline cracks near the ports, on one of the back hinges, and on the front edge... plus there were gaps where the keyboard/trackpad piece meets the bottom part of my Macbook. So it was obvious that the repairs were done shoddy, and I politely but firmly demanded that they fix the damage which was caused by them... so thankfully they sent it in to fix the casing, hinge, and to remount the keyboard/trackpad piece properly. I am hoping this will be the end of my cracking issues but within a year I have had to bring my laptop in 4 times due to cracking case issues... and I treat my notebook very gently. Thankfully I haven't had any issues with discoloration, but I wish Apple would fix the cracking issues on these lovely machines.

Late 2007 MacBook Pro intermittent black screen

I have this very odd issue with an intermittent black screen on a late 2007 MacBook Pro (4GB/320GB 7200rpm) Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1
Apologies for the length of the post.
In cycles separated by a few days to a week, the screen will flicker to black, initially very briefly, then for longer periods until it is black continuously, where it stays from a few hours to a couple of days then it flickers to normal, again very briefly then with longer intervals until it is steady and normal. It can then be fine for a week or more.
When the screen is working, it's perfect; no lines, stripes, colour shift or any difference to what one would expect. When it is black, the backlight is still operational (and dimming when on battery power) but there is no image - all pixels are solid black. Shining a torch on/through the screen does not reveal any image. When mirrored, the external monitor shows the brightness adjustment moving up and down in response to the key presses but it has no effect on the internal screen.
My external display (Eizo) is always functional no matter what the built-in one is doing and is completely solid at all times.
There is no correlation to temperature (I have SMC fan control), sleep, restart, fan speed, power source or anything environmental. The MacBook is on a fan stand for most of the time. External connections make no difference. If the fault is present before changing any of these factors, it is there after.
I am aware that this machine has known vulnerabilities with GPU and display issues but none present quite like this. I have performed the usual trawl on the net and I now know more than I ever wanted to about attempts to fix it.
Software remedies attempted:
Resetting PRAM and power manager.
No sleep image file (never used this option). I deleted the old swap files that were there in any case but this unsurprisingly did nothing.
Resetting the display settings via keyboard commands or Sys Prefs.
Screen savers and settings are not implicated.
Nothing whatever in the console logs that I can see.
TechTool Pro gives video RAM a clean bill of health and all other components pass including tests on the HD with TTP and DiskWarrior.
Safe boot and booting from systems on backups seem to have no effect but one safe boot restored the screen briefly - I think it was a coincidence.
I updated the OS from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 while this fault was coming and going and it made no difference. I usually prepare the machine for updates by running the cron jobs, repairing permissions etc.
In expectation of suffering this fault when the external monitor was not connected, I installed iScreen on the MacBook and use my iPad as a supplementary display and that works well too. Having all three operating, when the internal is functioning, is quite fun.
Hardware tests:
I removed the upper plate holding the keyboard and the interior of the machine was very clean with only some small dust accumulations in the fans, which were removed. There was no sign of any discolouration, corrosion, or other unpleasantness on the PCBs. All connectors and wiring looked good.
Every part of the logic board, cables and connectors were percussed, gently deflected and spray freezed, both while the fault was present and not (machine running) with no effect.
Display back was removed and the LCD board given the same treatment. No changes.
Display cable disconnected at both ends and tested for continuity (probe resistance accounted for) and consistency with a Fluke 87 multimeter - passed OK. On a scope, active signals and power were present on all the pins when the display was working but the fault did not occur during this test, which might have been interesting.
No apparent shorting of the display cable but without removing it this cannot be proved.
Problem not affected by hinge position, pressure on any part of the display, twisting, percussing etc.
Used compressed air to blow out the connectors which were reseated carefully.
After all this, the machine remains in exactly the same state, cycling between operational and black with various flickering stages as it comes and goes.
All I can deduce is that as the external monitor has always been OK, the GPU itself is probably working fine and the fault is more likely in the LCD panel electronics. I doesn't feel like a software issue to me but heck, I don't know what is going on.
Does anyone have any experience of something like this?

Thanks for your post and I'm sorry you have suffered the same problems.
My trust levels are not very high because it's clear there is some systemic display problem with this model, which is why Apple are fixing them. As I mentioned, we have no idea if the replacement boards are any different to the originals. From your experience it would look like they are not and my suspicion is that it is very unlikely that Apple made a new batch of these logic boards a long time after the model was discontinued. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I stand to be corrected.
As you say, the difference between our two faults appears to be that a physical deformation of some part of the machine does something with yours but never did with mine. At one point I felt that a short in the internal display cable seemed like the best explanation for the problem but it looks like it's more complex than that because of the behaviour of our external displays and subsequent strange booting behaviour.
If, as I have read, the soldering of the GPU was faulty and leads to progressive failure of the graphics sub-system, then all kinds of strange behaviours could arise and produce the intermittent problems we have seen. Micro-fractures of the chip interconnects would suggest that tiny movements might change the presentation of the fault. If soldering really is the issue, then keeping the machine as cool as possible will extend the life of the connections. Consequently mine will sit on a fan-stand for the rest of its days, which is no problem because it just had Win 7 installed on it and I don't want to be seen in public with it in that state ;-)
All we can conclude is that a logic board swap fixes the problem for some indeterminate period, so the problem is on that board. Whether it is a design fault with the NVIDIA chip itself or a manufacturing fault with the board is not clear but we can probably forget LCD panels, cables, sleep issues, power supplies and all the other peripheral issues unless there is yet another design issue that causes the GPU to fail.
Are you intending to present your machine to Apple for another go at a fix?

Late 2007 Macbook startup problem

I have a problem with my late 2007 Macbook. Originally, when starting up, I would briefly see the startup screen, then get three beeps. Since this is normally the sign of a memory problem, I ordered new memory (supposedly of the correct specifications, although upgrading from 2 x 512 MB to 2 x 2 GB). However, now when I start up, only the power indicator light at the front of the computer comes on. Nothing else happens. Putting the old memory back in returns the old problem, which suggests that I haven't managed to knock out video. I have tried resetting the SMC, but to no effect. Any suggestions, or is this computer fried?

Thanks for the suggestions. X423424 was correct in that the ram was defective; placing it into a MacBook Pro with the same memory requirements led to the same failure to boot.
However, taking the working 2GB memory from the MacBook Pro did not solve the boot-up problems on the MacBook. Fortunately, the memory still works after returning it to its original computer.
Any other suggestions on how this MacBook might be fixed, or is it simply fried?

Bumpy battery - Late 2007 Macbook

Hi,
I would like to ask if anyone has noticed a weird behaviour of their batteries with the late 2007 Macbook.
My battery still works but it has begun "shapeshifting".
It started being a little bumpy in the middle but now the bump is being more and more noticeable: you can even have the perception it is going to jump out from the MacBook.
On the internal side, as proof of the shapeshift, some "points" have appeared exactly in the area which is at contact with the metal-like plate as a result of
I'm getting worried, I would not like my MacBook battery to explode while I'm on a plane or something.
I began using it without battery but I cannot use it only as a "small desktop replacement".
So.. anyone with the same issue?

I think that the "MacBook with no battery" is faster than the "MacBook with exploding battery" option, so I'll stick with it as long as I can

Which OS X can a late 2007 MacBook with 4 Gb of RAM run?

I have a late 2007 MacBook 3.1 with Leopard 10.5.8 and a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo. I want to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM (Crucial) and an SSD (Crucial). If I do this, which OS X should I use?
Or if I use the stock HD with 4Gb RAM. To which OS X can I upgrade.

It's Mountain Lion after Lion. Then Mavericks (10.9) and Yosemite (10.10, current OS).
The older OS's still work just fine, though you may find that security updates don't get released for them. I haven't seen anything about such updates not being released for Lion so far, though Snow Leopard has been left behind the last few times an update was released. I would not be surprised if Lion gets dropped sooner rather than later.
The only other issue is that Safari would probably too old to work well on some websites (Gmail, for example, will show you a message that says the browser isn't supported), but you can switch to Firefox or Chrome to get around that issue.
There are free programs that do about the same as Microsoft Office - Libre Office (http://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/) is one of them. Office for Mac is kinda pricey unless you can get it through a school or work license. They may end up releasing a new version in the next year or two, though they've been pushing the Office 365 subscriptions instead so who knows.
Software developers for the most part are pretty good about including the older OS's - many of them only require Snow Leopard (10.6), so that's a plus!

I have a Late-2007 Macbook (the plastic one) which runs 10.7.5. For the past month and a half, I will be on my computer and suddenly everything stops working. Webpages stop loading, I can't switch or quit out of programs, etc. Then suddenly, my computer crashes. When it crashes, the whole computer goes black but you can hear that it's still on. To turn the computer back on, I have to hold down the power button to shut the computer off completely. When I turn it back on, everything works as normal. This has been happening about once every two or three days, except once or twice it has gone a week without crashing. I verified and repaired the computer's harddrive using the disk utility application, however that did not help. Also, it's happened when I had open a number of different programs so it doesn't appear that it could be an application causing it to crash (for example, it's crashed while I've used Google Chrome and another time when I've used Firefox so that doesn't seem to be the issue) Has anyone had this problem and/or know a possible solution?

I lost my DVI to VGA Display Adapter for my late 2007 Macbook Pro and can only find adapters for the PowerBook G4. Will this adapter work for my Macbook Pro?

Yes, all of those DVI+A to SVGA/VGA adapters for Macs are the same. I have adapters from the titanium G4, aluminum G4 and intel MBP and they all have DVI and came with adapters that function the same.

Late 2007 MacBook Pro S-Video adapter no output.

I've troubleshooted everything I can, so hopefully one of you can help me!
My Fiancé's mom has a late 2007 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion. She has an older tv, so I was wanting to mirror the display so she can watch Netflix on her TV.
After digging around on the Internet, other users said the APPLE M9267G/A adapter solved this problem without the need for a converter box, or upscaler. Needless to say, it doesn't work..
I've tested the cable, port on the computer, and they both work. I've tried running just the yellow Composite video out instead of the S video through the video in on the TV, and a VCR... Nothing.
I used my old Powerbook 1.67, which has an S Video out to the TV, and it works perfect. When I plug the adapter into the Powerbook's Dual Link DVI port, same port as the MacBook Pro, it doesn't work..
I chose S-Video, even though the TV has Component inputs, because other forums said it wouldn't work without an expensive converter box.
They said this would be the solution.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same problem, though with an early-2008 MBP. Things worked fine with 10.6.x and as soon as I went to 10.9 the external display stopped working.
The first time I plug in the adaptor (whether or not there is a video cable attached) the screen goes black and nothing shows up on the external screen. When I unplug the adaptor, I get the display back on the MBP but it's at low resolution and it has put me at the general login screen. When I put the adaptor back in the second time, it essentially locks up the display to where it is black and no key presses or adaptor removals brings the display back. I have to reset the MBP by holding down the power button. I submitted a bug report too, but have no faith Apple will do anything. Big fail, Apple.

Yes. Snow Leopard requires at least 1GB of RAM; the Mac App Store will check compatibility before allowing Mountain Lion to be purchased.

Your Mac originally came with 2 GB of RAM. Mavericks will run in that amount but will be slower than if you have 4 GB or 6 GB. If after you upgrade you want more speed see OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial.com for memory upgrades. They are inexpensive.

Late 2007 MacBook Pro - Fresh install

I have a late 2007 MacBook Pro. I want to do a fresh install. Is it best to use the original discs, which would take me back to tiger, or can I just use a new retail copy of Snow Leopard?
Will that retail copy of Snow Leopard hold all the proper drivers for the late 2007 mbp?

I just did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on my late 2007 MPB (I bought it in Jan 08 and it shipped with Leopard). Worked out fine, only difference is the Retail Snow Leopard doesn't bundle the iLife applications like the originals did. Other than that it went very smoothly.

Late 2007 Macbook hangs or stutters following recent Leopard update

After running the software update process on my late 2007 Macbook, the computer seems to stutter. It will do something like respond to a mouse click for a very brief period of time, then hang for 20 to 30 seconds. Just trying to open Safari takes a half-hour or more. Everything was working fine before the updates, and running the Grey OS-X disk that came with it in test mode says no problems were found with the hardware. Booting from that same disk works great also (no delays/stuttering).
It sure looks like something went wrong in the update process. I checked for similar problems and found a mention of ApplicationEnhancer.bundle being a source of issues, but that doesn't exist on my disk at all, so that isn't the issue.
Any ideas?
Since I can't use my Macbook's internal disk to boot from because of the sluggishness, can I boot from my external USB drive (10.5) and use the combo updater to put 10.5.8 onto the internal disk?
