Late 2008 Macbook Pro not waking from sleep

I just go a new MacBook Pro, and occasionally (maybe once a day) after I shut the computer to put it in sleep mode, and walk around with it, It refuses to wake when I open the lid. I have disabled the "put hard disk to sleep" and using the smartsleep preference pain, have put the computer in "sleep only," but the problem still occurs. Whenever this happens, I have to restart my computer with the restart button.

Alex, do you have your preferences set to require a password after sleep or screensaver? Sometimes I have had issues with this dialog window not popping up. Also does the status light on the MBP glow constantly or fade in and out when you lift the lid up? If it is lit constantly and nothing is displayed that means the computer is on...what I do is just close the lid again and then wait for the light to fade in/out and re open, then it usually works.

MacBook Pro not waking form sleep (sometimes)

My Macbook Pro is not waking from sleep (sometimes). To be very specific; the only time this happens is when it goes to sleep automatically, with the lid open, while plugged into the magsafe power cord. When I hit the space bar to wake it, the keyboard lights come on but the screen remains black. I do not have any problems with waking from sleep if I close the lid to force sleep (while plugged in). I also do not have any problems at all, if the computer goes to sleep while running on battery power. (I have had this MBP for about 18 months, the first year I had no issues at all. The problem started shortly after Lion was installed. (I also have a iMac with all the same software, almost identical set up, purchased at the same time as my MBP but have never had any sleep problems with the iMac, none even since Lion install.)
We do not have an Apple Store near us, but I have had the MBP in for service 3 seperate time to our local authorized Apple service/dealer. It is tricky to diagnose, because the problem does not happen every time. On average it won't wake from sleep 1 out of 3 times. Each time the service techs were able to re-create the problem but could not come up with a cause or solution, their only advice was to re-install Lion.
I have tried 2 different re-installs of Lion. (Both times erasing the hard drive first) The first time I did a clean re-install of Lion, then restored all of my data from Time Capsule. That did not work, the problem presisted. So I tried a second clean re-install of Lion and this time I did not restore from Time Capusle, I only re-installed critical docs from a flash drive and re-installed all other software (such as MS Office, Photoshop, etc.) from their original discs. I though this had fixed the problem but within a few days the problem re-occoured.
Any ideas would be appriciated, I have tried almost everything, I have days and days worth of time invested in trying to fix this issue. Thank you!

I had this problem with my MacBook Pro for a long time, and fixed it by changing the sleep mode. Here's how:
Open Terminal
Type the following:
     pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
It should say something like:
     hibernatemode 3
Here's an explanation of the different types of hibernate modes:
0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
To change your sleep mode, use the following command:
     sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
(replace 0 with whatever hibernate mode you desire)
For my MacBook Pro, I changed it to 0, and it works great. It's super fast to wake and sleep, which is a plus. The only downside of hibernatemode 0 is that if your battery runs out your computer doesn't hibernate - it shuts off. This doesn't matter, though, because with Lion everything is autosaved, so really hibernate 0 is all plusses.

MacBook Pro keeps waking from sleep on its own

My MacBook Pro keeps waking itself from sleep for no reason.
I had the battery changed for free by Apple (apparently it's one symptom of a problem with the original battery) but it hasn't abated. (Occasionally it won't wake up from sleep too, but that's rare and so not much of a problem). The main issue is its inability to stay asleep.
Anyone else had this? I can't find any advice anywhere else and the Genius Bar at the only store I can get to is always fully-booked.

Hi craigie, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
In addition to Michael's ideas, there have been some weird sleep issues caused by a System Preference, and although your issue doesn't sound the same, if you run on AirPort (and not Ethernet) I'd check it out anyway:
-Open System Preferences.
-Open Network.
-Click on Built-in Ethernet (note what it says underneath it: Not Connected or Inactive; Inactive is what seems to have caused the majority of other issues).
-Click the - button at the bottom of the window to delete the original Ethernet pref.
-Click Apply.
-Click the + button.
-For Interface, select Ethernet.
-For Service Name, enter Built-in Ethernet.
-Click on Create.
-Make sure your Location is set to Automatic or AirPort (or whatever you normally have it set to).
-Click on Apply and close Preferences.

Macbook Pro repeatedly waking from sleep with the clamshell closed

This is the second of two Macbook Pros that have inexplicably begun waking themselves from sleep with the clamshell closed. This continues until I either reboot, or unplug the power cord. Yes, that's right, unplugging the power cord stops the behavior EVERY TIME. The system log shows the reason for waking up as being: EHC1, EHC2 (USB Ports), however there is nothing plugged into the computer.
The first computer was replaced under warranty by Apple when they couldn't diagnose or fix the problem. This computer, however, is out of warranty. Any suggestions outside of the obvious (reinstall system software, repair permissions, check power management settings, etc) would be helpful.

Thank you for the very comprehensive list of possibilities. There are no wake events scheduled and even if there were, the fact that it happens randomly rules that possibility out. I originally thought (when it started to happen with my first Macbook Pro) that it had something to do with the power manager due to my recent installation of Alarm Clock Pro, which requires the user to wake the computer before the alarm goes off. However, after a complete wipe and fresh install of the OS (with no apps installed), it continued to wake itself up.
I greatly appreciate you clueing me in on the fact that the USB ports are not powered while asleep when the power cord is unattached. I did not know this and even the Applecare folks failed to mention it when they were troubleshooting it.
I don't use Bluetooth and always leave it off. However, I had heard that this was a symptom of Bluetooth becoming unavailable so I checked when this started happening and my Bluetooth is unaffected (I even turned it on and paired something to be sure).
I never plug a printer into the USB ports as I always use Bonjour with a printer plugged into Airport.

Macbook Pro Immediatly Waking From Sleep

Brand new MB Pro. (The first one lasted two weeks and was exhcanged b/c of a bad inverter causing the screen to flicker). After the first week with this one I noticed that it was waking itself up immediatly after sleeping. It does not matter how I put it to sleep: lid closed, power button or apple menu. The power light remains solid for few seconds (I assume saving info for the safe sleep) and then it will dim once then immediatly turn back on. I took it to the genius bar last week and on the way it somehow fixed itself as the problem refused to happen there. Tonight the problem is back and I am losing faith in it. This problem makes the computer hardly portable as it forces me to shut it down whenever I want to move it somewhere.
-I made a new user account and it had the same problem their
-Reset the PRAM
-Reset the SMC
-Trashed the power prefs file
Here is what I get from the terminal when using the command
ioreg -l | grep Reason
| | "Wake Reason" = <0000000000000000>
I have no devices attached. I have disable bluetooth and the airport. There are no items login items showing and I quit as many apps as I could from the activity monitor that I could.

I've got the same issue as you, except I've already disabled Safe Sleep, so that's not what's causing it. As well, nothing is connected, but Airport is active and Firefox is open. It seems to be getting more frequent, as it was 1 in 10 a few weeks ago, but now it's more like 1 in 3. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Macbook Pro Retina 2013 not waking from sleep

Hi all,
My brand new 15" Retina Macbook Pro (late 2013) is not waking from sleep. It doesn't occur after a short sleep (as I can wake it as normal by moving my mouse), but if the sleep is for some extended duration (not exactly sure, but at least within a couple of hours) then the only way to wake it is to use the power button.
I've tried an SMC reset to no avail -- the problem still occurs.
It's plugged into a power adapter and this is a screenshot of the settings page.
This is a very annoying issue. I'm hoping someone can help?

I managed to narrow down and reproduce the issue:
It occurs when the 'turn display off after' time lapses. Eg, if I change the setting to 1 minute and wait for the display to turn off, the computer will *not* wake up without pressing the power button.

no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

I have reset the NVRAM and the SMC a couple of time but that didn't work so I ran an Apple Hardware Test and while testing the logic board it gives the following error:
4SNS/1/40000000 LB1T
I've done some research and found this is a temperature sensor related to the battery, but cannot find where the sensor is located in the computer. Would you know how I can find the sensor to test it? Could my battery problem be related to something else? Would a fresh install of Lion help?

Two pieces of information that may or may not b helpful, the hard drive is from my early 2008 MBP and the only test disc I have access to is from an iMac.

Why do you have LION installed on that older machine?

I just upgraded from a late 2008 Macbook Pro with a AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB graphics card and I am now getting a blink (black screen) every few seconds.

You could always give it a shot - the only problem that you might run into is that the the early 2011 might not boot when the hard drive is swapped from the 2008 hard drive. Some versions of OS X are simply not compatible between different models.
But it's worth a try...

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model. I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need? What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases. How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive. Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later. A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

Is there anyway of directly connecting a Late 2008 MacBook Pro to a MacBook Pro, with retina, in a Target Disk Mode way without having to wait for the magical adapter in July?
Should I go to the Apple Store, buy a normal MacBook Pro, use it to do the transfer, and return it?

There is Setup Assistant when you first boot the new Mac, over wireless it's supposed to migrate for you, however I hear it can take hours and days to complete.

Another faster method would be to use the free/donations Carbon Copy Cloner the old Mac to a blank USB3, 2,1 drive, then hook it up to the new Mac and use Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant) that way, it will think it's another Mac.
You can also simply drag and drop files into a same named account on the new machine manually from the clone.
It should take about a hour per 250GB to clone, about another hour for Setup Assistant.
Over wireless it could take a eternity.
