Late 2008 Macbook Pro will not start if left unplugged overnight

Hello,
I've been having the following problem on a Late 2008 MBP, only owner and this just started a couple weeks ago (along the cold weather perhaps?):
Every morning it's very hard to start the MBP, I press the power button and get nothing, not even LED light. I already did SMC & PRAM reset with no apparent improvement on the issue. This happens even when the battery is fully charged, which was replaced for a new one two years ago.
I manage to start the machine after several combinations of removing the battery, plugging the AC adapter in it, butting the battery back in, etc. yet I haven't found a way that actually works.
If the machine is left plugged to the AC adapter overnight, it will boot without any hassle the next day! Somehow is leaving it on battery only that bricks the thing.
Is this a problem with the motherboard? Once it starts I can turn it on, off, send it to sleep and be on battery like the machine is brand new! HELP!
OS: 10.9.5
AC Adapter: 85W replaced around 2010
Battery: Health 96%, Cycles 143 (funny, yesterday was 97% and not long ago 99% or even 100%)
Additional peripherals: Expresscard USB3 (has been removed for testing)
Mods: 8GB RAM & Samsung 256GB SSD

Thanks for taking time to respond to my post, I understand it's old hardware but hey, if there are Macintoshes still running in the wild, why can't I have this MBP run for another decade!
I did what you suggested; cloned the SSD to the original HDD and replaced the RAM with the old Samsung memory – got the exact same result.
In fact it was harder for me to start the machine this morning. I couldn't do it with the old HDD and RAM so replaced them with the new ones AND still struggled to boot. I even reviewed all connectors where properly in place within the motherboard, no dust or anything strange inside the machine. I removed and re-inserted the RAM, did SMC reset and that seemed to do the trick (this time the machine booted only with the battery inside).
I read somewhere there's a thermal sensor involved in the booting process, could this be temperature related? Maybe moving things around just happens to warm up the parts. Are there any other type of tests I can perform on the RAM/Power Management to rule out any other problems? Is there an internal battery that might need to be replaced? I haven't suffered from clock reset or anything like that. I've had other computers not boot at all, both Mac & PC, and it's usually GPU related, this machine doesn't behave like that at all but could that be the problem?
Like I said, if I keep the machine in sleep mode or plug it in to charge before turning it off, there's no problem booting the morning after. Once the machine starts, I can turn it off and on even if the battery is removed and have never experienced a malfunction while on. It seems the lack of power is what bricks the machine regardless of the SSD/RAM or peripherals connected to it. Battery is charging to 100% again.
Any other suggestions are welcome! Will try not to leave the machine off or disconnected in the meantime.
Thanks again!

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
    Report any error messages.

    Hi MJTOOTS,
Since you are getting to the login screen, it is booting past the "gray screen" phase, so try the steps in this article, like a Safe Boot.

Actually it sometimes gets a little further, the display will dim and the pointer will appear and then whoop it will turn off. if i do a verbose start up, it will finish all the steps, the white screen will appear and dim and then it will turn off.

  • MacBook pro, will not start up- drive begins

MacBook pro, will not start up- drive begins?

    OK, then try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Since you can boot into safe mode successfully, I'm assuming the problem may be with a bad third-party extension or plug-in (such as a driver for third-party hardware or a bad Flash plug-in, for example.) It can also be a problem with a bad cache or preference file. If the above doesn't help then use a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.5, Cocktail, TinkerTool Sys..., or OnyX to clean out user, system, and font caches.

I had the same issue I bought my MacBook Pro in Jan. my harddrive was bad and they had to replace it. I know the guy held down the shift botton for a little then pressed the power botton while still holding down the shift botton and it turned on but not completely since my hard drive was bad.

  • HT1379 My Macbook Pro will not start at all. I automatically get the Apple Icon and a pinwheel that keeps clocking. How do I fix?

If anyone can assist with why my Macbook Pro will not pass the first screen, please respond. I have been getting the spinning pinwheel for a few days and cannot lg on now. In recent days I deleted some files and thought that would help the computer move a little faster but now it will not sllow me to access my account. Any suggestions on how to get pass the initial screen?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with Mountain Lion OS will not start up after my login.  All I get after logging in is the spinwheel forever.  It will start from guest user.  PRAM reset doesn't help.  Any suggestions?

    Adam,
Try a safe boot, power up holding the shift key note this will take longer so be patient hold the shift till you see the progress bar and try to login. If it works try logging out and logging in normally.

The Macbook Pro 13, late 2009 will not start past the grey Apple Logo screen?  Any help will be most welcome? Thanks

Have you tried booting with the install disc that came with your computer?
Find it and then run Disk Utility to verify your hard drive. If errors are found, try to repair the disk.
It sounds as if the hard drive might be failing.

  • My macbook pro will not start after pressing the power button

I have bought a macbook pro last year and now, I have a great problem since a few months.
My macbook does not boot up, I hear no fan noices and no LED lights are blinking...
Battey is full, but nothing happens (means system will not start up).
I have also tried to start with the Power button - but the similar effect "NOTHING HAPENS".
What I don't understand is, if I do nothing for one or two days and press then the power button, the system will start up and full functionality for a few days.
And anytime I get the same problem again... and must wait also for a few days.
    Can anybody support me please.
Thank you all in advance and looking forward to a fast reply.

Try reseting SMU as suggested in link below

  • My Early 2008 Macbook Pro will not boot with anything greater than 3GB of Ram.

    Early 2008 Macbook Pro 4,1
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)
    OS X 10.8.4
    Serial: W88450LR1XR
I keep reading mixed reviews saying that 3GB is the max while others say this system supports up to 6GB.  I have tried both Kingston and Crucial and PNY and I get the same results.  I can have 1x2GB stick and 1x1GB stick but not 2x2 GB sticks.  Both 2 GB sticks work independently but they will not work together.  They are PC2-5300 667 MHz.
I would really love to have at least 4 GB of ram in this computer.  Is it not possible?
    Thanks in advance.
    Symptoms:
If I put 2x2 GB in the computer and power it up, the little light on the front of the computer comes on but the screen stays black.  No post beeps or anything to indicate a failure or that it's running (except the light that comes on when I hit the power button)

Ok - so no one is replying.   I just contacted Other World Computing who says that my Laptop will support up to 6GB of ram.  I just ordered the memory directly from them.   I have 6GB in the mail and should arrive tomorrow.  I will report that if their guarenteed ram will work.
