Late 2009 Mac Mini EFI 2.1 Firmware update not needed/already factory installed?

Here has been my issue of trying to figure out if Mac Mini can handle (and fully use) 8GB of RAM with my current EFI version.
I want to upgrade to 8GB on a LATE 2009 Mac Mini that currently has Boot ROM MM31.00AD.B00 and was told to update with EFI Firmware update 2.1 but it does not install saying "This update is not needed on this machine".
I found various contradicting posts saying that I need my Boot ROM to be MM31.0081.B06 or my machine won't utilize the 8GB fully
and will slow down in performance and/or crash after the Apple recommended 4GB.
But here's what I found interesting. Some users have mentioned that the Late 2009 Mac Mini's shipped with updated firmware and don't need this update but could not find a concrete answer as to yes it did ship with it or not.
Apple doesn't even list a Late 2009 Mac Mini as needing a Firmware update in this list of Firmware updates:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 . Should I just assume that my machine shipped with said update and is capeable of the 8GB? I use this for Logic Pro 9 as a somewhat portable workstation that I can take with me so maxing out the RAM would be ideal for me.
Any help or clarification would be greatly apprishiated,
Nelson

Actually a Late 2009 can take 8GB of RAM and only the Early 2009 needs the EFI update.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:

    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,

  • I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?

I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?
Because of the price I'm not interested in solid state drives, unless of course you want to send me $1,000.
I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

  • Where can I get an EU power supply for my late 2009 mac mini

I have a late 2009 mac mini.  The power supply is good for US voltage only.  The new mac mini specs say they can accept 110 - 220 VAC, 50-60 Hz.  Will one of these new power supplies work with my older mini?  Where can I get one, can't seem to locate on the Apple online store.  Moving to France and don't want to leave my mac behind!
    Thanks,
    JSP

you could get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-XP18000-Universal-External-Netbooks/dp/B002K8M9H C
it's about the same cost as an extra battery used to be. there's a range of similiar products at Amazon, i'd check reviews.

  • I'm having trouble with installing a 8g kit in my late 2009 mac mini. when the parts are installed all i get is a beeping sound, is there any way to get around this?

i'm having trouble with installing a 8g kit in my late 2009 mac mini. when the parts are installed all i get is a beeping sound, is there any way to get around this?

What is the source & link to this 8 GB kit please?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Does anyone know how to update OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1. to 10.8.2. on a late 2012 Mac mini. All I get are 'not compatible' messages even using supplementary updates etc?

Does anyone know how to update OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.1. to 10.8.2. on a late 2012 Mac mini. All I get are 'not compatible' messages even using supplementary updates etc?

It appears that many of the problems with the HDMI are the "monitors" that are being used. Samsung and Vizeo both DO NOT support a computer input on HDMI only VGA. There probably are others, manuals must be read to confirm compatability.
I strongly believe that the reason the 10.8.2 update was pulled is due to the fact (it happened to me) that the new Disk Utility creates a Fusion drive if aftermarket SSDs are added to the system. I think Apple wants this propriatary Fusion Drive to be something you buy from them not a "homebrew" for lots less money.

  • RAM Upgrade for Late 2009 Mac Mini -- anyone tried 16gb?

Just a stupid question.. I've got a Mac Mini server (late 2009) that came with 4Gb of RAM.. The machine has never been speedy by any means and after finally getting some time to look into why, I think I know mostly why.. I've got the machine setup handling DNS, email (with Amavis, spam handling, etc), both MySQL and Postgres databases, Apache+WebDAV+iCAL and of course handling 2-3 user accounts being logged in at all times (using iTunes, Safari, etc).  if I pull up Activity Monitor or use the "MemoryStick" utility, I see that my RAM usage is typically (almost always) at about 96% used with 7 swap files running.. I've never seen it below about 95% used.  I know that this machine is capable of being outfitted with 8Gb of RAM (although Apple does not necessarily endorse that config).  So, this leads to my next question -- has anyone taken some 8Gb RAM modules such as these : http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S32S/  and tried plopping two of them in to see if they're recognized as 8Gb modules and used or not?  I also have a brand-new 15" MBP (2011 model) that seems to occasionally suffer from the same fate -- it's also got 4GB of RAM and last night for quite a while it was at the 90% utilization level for RAM as well while importing some videos in iMovie '11..
I'll have to admit that I'm wondering whether 8Gb is going to be enough RAM for my purposes on the mini.. I suspect I'm probably asking it to do too much -- all of this used to be done on an older model HP Proliant server (quad CPU, hot-swap drives, redundant power supplies, etc) -- but it cost about $40+ per month in power alone..
    Anyone?

Thx.. I've actually upgraded to a new 2011 Mac Mini which can still take those same 8Gb ram sticks.. Interestingly enough the new Mac Mini server still comes with a measly 4gb of RAM which just doesn't cut it with OSX Lion -- I'm constantly at 1% free RAM when I've got Mail.app running.. Ugg.. Hopefully once I put 12Gb or 16Gb in, it'll hum along..

  • How many screen monitors can I use with late 2009 Mac Mini?

hey guys. I have a Mac mini from late 2009 that is connected with 2 screen monitors, and I was wondering if I can add another one through one of the usb ports? If so, can I use a usb to vga adapter to plug it in? thanks for any answers!

You can add multiple USB monitors or USB video adapters, but realize that USB video is usually quite a bit slower than "normal" video cards.  So don't display Youtube or other moving video on the USB device.  Me personally, I have a Mimo 7" USB monitor and I have my calendar displayed on that.
You can also get the Matrox DualHead2Go or TripleHead2Go to add more monitors to a single video port.  It has much better performance than a USB video adapter, but of course costs quite a bit more.

  • Late 2009 Mac Mini odd Super Drive Loading and Ejecting Noise

I have had no problems with my Mac Mini until now. Just today I inserted a disk into the super drive and it made a different noise to usual as it took the disk. Also, when I ejected it, it made different noise to what it usually makes. The drive still reads and writes fine it is just the loading and ejecting noise I am worried about.
    Help would me much appreciated
    cp1996

Sounds like you should be expecting the drive to fail more or less any time now. If the thing is still under warranty, take it in and try to get it replaced. There is a category for abnormal noise when selecting the failure type, so you should have a decent chance. But only if it's under warranty.

  • Imac 27" late 2009 SOS beeps at startup after firmware update

    Here is the story.
After a firmware update, imac did not start up and beeped. The only way to get it to start was to reset the VRAM using the command option P R. Then it was starting fine, but for each reboot I had to do the same.
A firmware update later... And now even that doesn't work.
Could it be the logic board battery? ( computer is 3.5 yrs old and part of it was 2 months in storage so off the grid).
Anyone has had a similar issue before I bring it to the applestore and wait for the overpriced repair?
    Thanks!

    Hi Gus,
    Which beeps?
The following table lists the new tones and their meaning:
    Tone(s)    Description
1 tone, a 5-second pause, repeat    No RAM installed
3 successive tones, a 5-second pause, 3 successive tones    RAM does not pass data integrity check
1 long tone when holding down the power button    Firmware upgrade in process. See About firmware updates for Intel-based Macs for more details.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones    Firmware restoration from CD in process. See About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) for more details.

Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

    Not easy to do yourself.
    PS. You reset the PRAM.

  • No Sound on new late 2009 Mac Mini

Hello, well, on Tuesday I watched a movie and everything worked fine, on Wednesday, I turned it on and it worked fine, startup ping, iTunes, everything. I started BootCamp and proceeded to install Windows Vista. When it came to the Windows installer, it told me that I need to have Windows already installed. I can't find my XP disc, so I just turned off my mini. When I restarted it, there was no ping and now there is no sound. I updated to 10.6.4 on Thursday and still no sound. I am going to install 10.6.4 again using the downloaded version, not the system update version. I hope it works. If it doesn't I will post, but any help would be appreciated.

  • Message comes up on startup: You are unable to log in to the user account "terry" at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred.  This is a late 2012 mac mini with a 64g SSD and 1 Gig hard drive installed.  Help please!

As in title.  I have tried resetting the password. Nothing works to get me past this problem.  The computer was working fine before this happened.

I have just purchased this mini and it was wiped to a virtual new unit.  I have done an install of the OS up to 10.9.5 and then installed my purchased software that is stored on iTunes through wifi.  The computer was working fine although sometimes a bit slow.  I have it set up with the SSD as the program drive and the 1T drive for data which I have no files on it yet.  I am the only account on the computer so cannot log in on another account.  I booted up holding the Alt key and then used the restore drive which brought up the Utilities window.  I then opened Terminal and typed in "resetpassword" and then closed out and restarted the computer.  It seems to recognize my new password but still gives me the same message as above.
I do have an Apple OS system 10.7 on USB if that needs to be used to reinstall the OS to fix the problem. Thanks for taking the time to help me with this problem.

  • I just had more ram installed in my 2009 mac mini and now there is no audio at all.

    Hi all,
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini which I update to mavericks. This was not a great idea. The performance has been aweful since upgrading. I finally looked into adding RAM. I was told by the Genius at my local store to buy RAM on line and bring it back to the store for install. I had the Ram installed today and I am satisfied that things function much faster now.
The problem now is that the computer does not make any noise. I have speakers plugged into the headphone jack but no noise comes out. When the system boots up, there are no beeps or tones audible. The speakers were all working earlier today when I unplugged everything to take the mini to the store. I also plugged the speakers jack into my phone and they work. I was able to connect a bluetooth speaker and play music through it.
I have tried to reset the PRAM but I"m not sure if I was successful. The instructions I have read for PRAM reset say hold keys until second chime is heard. I heard no chimes at all.
I am a novice when it comes to computers but I am good at following detailed instructions.
Any help would be graetly appreciated!

Yes, this was an Apple retail location.
I made an appiontment thinking that they would sell and install the RAM. When I got there, the genius looked up the specs for my mini and said they did not sell what I needed. He explained that the mini was older and out-dated. He looked up the specs on what RAM i needed and suggested that I purchase it elsewhere and bring it back for them to install. He suggested that I purchase a new computer but I couldn't justify spending $600 or more. I am a very light user and would only be wasting money on a newer set up.
It was when I returned that I was informed (by a different tech) that Apple would not be responsible for any damage that might occur during the replacement.
I decided to proceed anyway thinking that an apple tech was less likely to do damage than I was.
After taking it in the back and swapping the chips, he brought it out, plugged it in and proceeded to open a bunch of Ram hogging apps, graphing software, and internet sites. I was happy to see that the performance was greatly improved and the spinning ball was not dominating the system.
After I hooked it back up at home and tried to play some music, I realized that there was no sound.

  • What digital audio cable can I use with my 2009 Mac mini?

I have a late 2009 Mac mini (not the HDMI model) and I would like to get digital audio out of it. What kind of cable should I use?
The headphone jack says that it can connect with digital audio products, but I don't know how to tell if 1/8th cables are digital or analog.
    Thanks!

the mac mini's headphone jack has a combination optical hookup. any kind of headphone cable will not send out the optical signal, you can tell because when you look at a standard headphone cable, it doesnt have anything for light to shine through it!
to get the digital audio out of the mini im pretty sure you will need aToslink to Mini Digital Optical SPDIF Audio Cable. they sell these on amazon for $5.55
you connect one side to the mac mini and you connect the other side of the cable to your optical input on your receiver
im pretty sure this is correct. the mac might send digital down a regular cable (some receivers will do this too) but im pretty sure the digital is sent down optically
