Late 2009 MacPro Grainy Resolution
My dad bought a used late 2009 macpro and it has worked great until the last couple of days. The screen has all of a sudden turned grainy and the color is off. At times it almost looks like the screen is shaking. I have played around with the display settings and have restarted the computer multiple times and it will not fix. What can we do?

What should I set me screen resolution to in photoshop CC with my late 2009 27" iMac?
What should I set me screen resolution to in photoshop CC with my late 2009 27" iMac?
If its native resolution is 2560x1440 then some people do find it marginal with a 27 inch screen, but I'd have thought it workable if you know where everything is. People are using that screen res on tiny laptops, but to be fair, they are not much liking it with Photoshop.
I don't know how Retina support works with CC, but I wonder if you could force it on your iMac?
Any Mac users out there know how Retina support works? -
27" iMac freezing daily (late 2009)
Been having this problem for a long time...through at least 3-4 OS versions, and prior to a recall HD replacement iirc. No apparent rhyme or reason....it just locks up, including the cursor with no warning and requires a power cycle to restart. No forewarning or apparent odd behavior (aside of a general lagginess and regular beachballs that I'm guessing is more to do with it's age than anything) The only common condition I can think of it that it's always when Safari is running and being used, but since that's pretty much always the case, I don't see it as a critical data point.
It happens roughly daily, but that's likely more based on my typical usage and would increase or decrease as such. I've seen a few similar issues posted in random searches over the years, but never a solid resolution to those cases. There is lots of log activity in the seconds prior to or during these crashes, but is sadly all Greek to me. Here is a text file of that period from today if it helps: crash0218.rtf
Spec-wise, it's a 2.8 i7, 1TB(@ prob 93% full), 8GB, ATI 4850 (512)
I keep hoping that each new OS or Safari version will magically correct it, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen, haha, so I'd appreciate any ideas or input as this is becoming really frustrating and I'd really like to get another year or so out of this machine if possible. Thanks for the responses.
The OS is current, just an old signature.
I've definitely had TuneUp (iTunes tagging utility) a long time, but don't remember seeing weird activity from it in the past. It's a fairly new version (~3 days) so there might be some permissions issues with it or something? It wasn't running at the time, nor was iTunes.

Connecting external display to 2009 iMac 27" - resolution?
I have a late-2009 27" iMac and am trying to connect to it a 27" external display (ASUS PB278Q). Both the iMac and the Asus have resolution of 2560x1440, but when I connect them, the best I can get on the ASUS is 1920x1080.
I am connecting via the Mac's monitor port with a Mac dongle to a cable that is DVI on both ends.
Do I need a different cable type? The monitor allows DVI, Displayport and HDMI connections.
Grateful for any insights, thank you.The standard Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter only supports monitors up to 1900 x 1200.
see > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/B/mini-displayport-to-dvi-adapter?fnode =53
If you want a higher resolution you will need a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter.
see > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter
Or because your ASUS monitor also supports DisplayPort input, a simple Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

13" MacBook Pro (Late 2009) - nVidia 8400m stuttering graphics.
Recently, my nVidia 8400M GPU seems to have started acting up on my 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2009). Whenever it is coming under a lot of heavy graphics i.e. games, the FPS rate begins to drop - understandibly, this is normal. However, it's predictability and duration is not.
Both under Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows (via Boot Camp) the problem occurs and will occur under any heavy graphics. Currently, the only games I play on my MacBook are Source based (Portal 2, L4D2, Team Fortress 2) and Minecraft; all of which have the issue.
The issue is that once the game begins, the FPS is fine, usually hovering around 24-30fps on full resolution with decent settings which is high enough for fluid gameplay. However, 5-10 minutes into gameplay, the FPS plummets to around 12 fps in a reoccuring pattern (demonstrated as best possible below with '-' being smooth gameplay and and '.' being a 'stutter');
----- . . . ----- . . . ----- . . . ----- . . . ----- (and so on)
It's fairly rapid, the smooth might last for a few seconds, stutter; smooth, stutter, smooth, stutter in a rhymic predictable pattern. At first, I attributed it to possibly a flaw in the Source code for Mac, it's still fairly new. But then Minecraft started. And now it occurs on Windows so it must be a hardware issue.
After maybe 10-15 minutes, it'll resume a normal FPS that's playable (or oddly, if the map is changed or refreshed on TF2, that kick starts normal FPS). Once it's settled down, you could close the game, come back hours later and wouldn't have the issue - if you put the Mac to sleep or shutdown, it'll occur again on next boot.
Is this a common occurrence with the 8400M on MacBooks? I used to play TF2 on Windows via Bootcamp before it was released for Mac and can never remember having this issue.
Is this something that could possibly be resolved instore? My MacBook Pro is still under AppleCare, would it be worth them having a look at it?You say recently.... I suspect that it has something to do with the 10.6.8 you have posted on the bottom left of your specs. I too had this very same problem and it turned out to be some apps that were not yet optimized for 10.6.8 I had to pop the install disk in and downgrade to 10.6.7... problems have disappeared since then. Good luck! Check your activity monitor and see what the CPU usage is when you boot up also check your system memory... After the update my computer the new MBP i7 2.2ghz was using 50% of the cpu at idle didn't notice it until I finally checked activity after having sluggish performance editing in aperture and restarting multiple times.

Late 2009 imac as second display for new (late 2012) imac. How to?
I have a late 2009 imac 27 that I would like to use as a second display for my late 2012 imac 27. Has anybody connected them successfully? I am getting very mixed information on the topic.
Thank you. Here's where my confusion comes in
"iMac (Mid 2011) and later: target Display Mode does not work with Mini DisplayPort cable"
Symptoms
When you attempt to connect an iMac (21.5-inch or 27-inch, Mid 2011) and later to another computer with a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, the screen of the target iMac will not become an external display when you press Command-F2 to activate Target Display Mode.
Resolution
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) computers do not support Target Display Mode via Mini DisplayPort cables. -
Logic Pro X on Macbook 13inch late 2009
Hello all
just looking to clarify a few things. I'm looking to purchase Logic for recording on my mac for a university course i'll be doing. I'm in the process of doing a full system restore and RAM upgrade from 2 to 4gb. Looking at the specs of Logic Pro X it says i require the following:
4GB of RAM
Display with 1280x768 resolution or higher
OS X v10.8.4 or later
Requires 64-bit Audio Units plug-ins
Minimum 5GB of disk space. 35GB of optional content available via in-app download
All of which I will have. HOWEVER i'm not sure about the 64 Bit audio plug in part. Does my Macbook late 2009 model have this? And if not, is my only option to go with the older but still good Logic Pro 9?
Thanks very much! From the FAQ's > Logic Pro and MainStage 64-bit mode FAQ
How do I use Logic Pro or MainStage in 64-bit mode?
You can switch between 32-bit and 64-bit mode following these steps:
Quit Logic Pro or MainStage if it is running.
Navigate to the Logic Pro or MainStage application in the Applications folder.
Choose Get Info from the Finder File menu.
Disable the option to "Open in 32-bit mode" to open in 64-bit mode.
You would have to have Logic installed to view that infromation from the Logic > Get Info window.
On the RAM upgrade, the more RAM for audio editing the better. I'd increase beyond 4GB of RAM is possible. -
Will It Work on Leopard: iMac Late 2009 with Quad Core i7, 8GB and 4850 Mobility GPU
Hi. I'm doing an experiment if the garbled screen (unreadable but the OS and files are not being corrupted at all) I'm experiencing since I upgraded to Lion (up to Yosemite) is a software bug (specifically when it's running it's 3D drivers) or a hardware bug (possibly the GPU is failing). I would rule it as a hardware, that the iMac's GPU is failing but when I used Ubuntu 14.04 Live CD which does not use any of the 3D drivers (it doesn't use OpenGL) for its 3D acceleration, it's perfect there which is why I feel it may be a software bug- no problems with 3D acceleration.
If Leopard would work on the late 2009 iMac with i7 quad core, that'd be great.
Thank you in advance.
God bless, Rev. 21:4The only issue I have found is that the there are no additonal display resolution settings to adjust.
So the iMac is stuck with its native resolution in OS X 10.5.8 Leopard (I hate the iMac's 2550 x 1900 resolution. Everything is just too small for my 50 year old eyes.)
You can adjust the size of icons and icon text size in the Finder Prefs and View Options, you can adjust the Dock size, but that is pretty much it.
No way to adjust the size of the text in the top main menu bar or make the text in the title bar on Finder windows larger, either.
But everything else works.
I can access all of my other external drives, most of the applications, that are mostly updated to work just with OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, launch and work fine. My Wacom Intuous3 tablet seems to work fine add I can adjust the preferences and controls of all of by pens and airbrush tool.
My older IR Microsoft and Logitech mice work fine.
I can't believe how much faster OS X 10.5.8 runs on this iMac.
If I hadn't updated all of my Apple apps on OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and all my updated iTunes, iPhoto and Aperture Libraries, long ago, needed more up to date web browsers (TenFourFox wasn't available back in 2011) and Mail clients, more up to date Flash and security updates, I might have just stayed using OS X 10.5 Leopard on this iMac.
It is quite a bit faster than Snow Leopard. Even that much faster considering I am running OS X 10.5.8 from my external FW800 drive. -
I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading. I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable. They are usually soldered to the logic board. RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's. So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.
Hope this helps -
Late 2009 imac screen driver corrupt
In the last few days my screen has been playing up.
Symptoms:
-5 thick pink vertical bands appear on the screen (actually every second pixel in each band appears pink on a white surface, but light blue on a blue surface)
-Computer will either take FOREVER to boot up or not at all (I boot in safe mode atm)
-Windows have large black areas around them instead of gentle drop shadow
-Windows eventually just turn black
-drop down menus become garbled (chunks of white appear over the cut up text
-when I try to dual boot into Windows, it refueses to load and says the display driver is corrupt.
everything else seems fine, I just cant see what I'm doing and the bootup *****

So...
I disconnected all peripherals and this allowed me to boot up , but the symptoms returned quickly. I have se-set my Pram, updated to the new OS 10.9.2.
IF I use time machine to go back to a previous date, Will the display driver also be reverted?
CAN I download a new display driver? (tried downloading an update that refers to the driver but my computer said I already had it..)Thank you for posting this with attention to detail.
I have have your exact configuration except I use 8 GB Apple Supplied VRAM also and many issues which commenced after a Moutain Lion update about mid way through the life cycle. My issues do not include the boot up time or incorrect appearances on screen. My iprimary issue is one of brightness which I can no longer adjust without the screen going black.. Cmd Alt p - r gives a tempory fix to the issue under the current version 10.9.3 Until the Ambient Light Sensor decides to kick in, I can work with the brightness. Soon after I get black screens and can recover from these through a re-boot with Cmd Alt p- r or alternatively by plugging in a mac mini via the mini display port and lowering the brightness by one star. The brightness then in steps moves down to something unusable and can only be resolved through the Cmd Alt p - r reboot,
There is no provision to turn off Automatic Control of Brightness in the Display section of the System Preferences Panel.
I have had the set up looked at and there is no wiring issue and I am advised that the ATI Radeon HD 4850 does not appear to present a hardware issue.
The brightness issue has improved marginally with each Mavericks update and I note that this has happened without any Revision to the ROM or EFI Driver Version.
In your case, I would get some advice on increasing your VRAM
For the first time since 1982 I am frustrated with such support issues.
The only solution seems to be to replace the Display Card with a card that will enable switching off Automatic Control of Brightness.
A question. Has anyone with similar configuration and experience resolved such issues by having the Diplay Card upgraded? If so which Display Card was chosen? -
I'm totally confused!
I have a late 2009 model Macbook. And I want to connect it to my TV.
So my research has led to believing I need a Mini display port adapter and a HDMI cable - but from some of what I have read, this won't carry sound...
Can anyone clarify this and what I do actually need? The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with theHDMI.
If you have the Late 2009 model 6,1 White Unibody with the MiniDisplay Port there is an adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

I have a late 2009 MacBook which I want to connect to an old LG tv. The tv does not support HDMI it only has the (red, while, and yellow) ports. Sorry I dunno the exact name for it.
So I was thinking of using the Apple Mini DVI to Video Adapter (s-video), link below...
http://store.apple.com/Catalog/dk/Images/M9319_screen.jpg
But I'm afraid that the MacBook might not support the adapter.
Can anyone give me a solution for this? Is there an alternative way of doing this? I'm kinda new to apple display adapters. The Late 2009 model 6,1 has a Mini DisplayPort not the Mini-DVI. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When the System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
Composite is the name for the red, white and yellow RCA plugs on your TV or red, white and S-Video plugs. If you want to use the Composite input on your TV there’s no Mini DisplayPort to Composite. You’ll have to get a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=mini+displayport+to+vga&sprefix=mini+Displayport+to and a VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video. http://www.amazon.com/VGA-Adapter-S-Video-Cable-Video/dp/B000Y7T5UU/ref=sr_1_7?s =electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316369974&sr=1-7
Only the Yellow plug or the S-Video plug for video will work. For sound you'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macboo k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable -
I currently have a late 2009 iMac, a 2012 MBP, a mid 2010 MBP and a MinDisplay Port (MDP) male to male cable. I am trying to either use the iMac a second monitor for one of the MBPs or mirror the display.
The iMac has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
The MBP 2010 has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion)
The MBP 2012 has a Thunderbolt port and is running OS X 10.9 (Maverics)
When I connect the 2010 MBP to the iMac with the MDP cable the screen of the iMac goes black and the MBP flashes blue. I have been looking for a solution and I have tried:
Rebooting them in the order of: connecting the cable, turing on the MBP, then turing on the iMac
Whilst they are on simply plugging the cable between the two
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the MBP
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the iMac, whilst there are connected, only toggles a black screen on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the MBP doesn't do anything
Every time I connect the MBP 2012 to the iMac with the MDP cable, the MBP screen goes black and the computor screen becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on and I have to reboot the MBP.
I will really appreciate anyone who has any information on this topic.
ThanksIf the iMac is a 21-inch model, not without using a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network.
If the iMac is a 27-inch model, click here for information.

Hello,
Sorry for the repost, but I realized after the edit period had passed that I left out a lot of information from my original post, and that I misrepresented my problem in the question heading. Because of this, I am posting again with the updated information.
I am using a 21.5" iMac from Late 2009 with OSX Mavericks 10.9.2. Recently, I have been experiencing several signs of failure/aging during use:
Frequent:
Mail.app slow opening, closing; messages opened in large batches do not get marked as read
Terminal.app experiences noticeable lag when opening (it sometimes takes between 5 and 20 seconds between launching the application and getting an active prompt)
Processes lag or become unresponsive, even when not many applications are running
Browswers frequently become unresponsive, pinwheel, or lag considerably, frequently requiring a force-quit.
Mouse Pinwheels Frequently
Intermittent
Computer generates loudly audible fan noises, persists even when computer is briefly powered off during a reboot; does not always stop after rebooting
Finder often becomes unresponsive
Rare (one time only)
Machine powered on in "Safe Boot" mode for no apparant reason; red text reading "Safe Boot" in menu bar of login screen; background picture slideshow mode became very glitchy, phased and flashed in horizontal grey bars before loading next background image
Chronic (Consistently Happens)
Machine will not boot if plugged into normal powerpoint after being unplugged from that power-point; cable must be plugged into a different A/C power outlet for machine to boot, at which point it can be switched off again, moved back to the original dedicated outlet, and booted again. This has never failed to happen, and is mind-boggling.
I followed some instructions from a similar thread, but I felt that my experiences were sufficiently different that I couldn't troubleshoot from someone else's solution. I would greatly appreciate any technical advice and help that the community can offer.

1: If I hold down option key with my USB plugged in to see my hard drives so I can boot into Windows, boot camp is not there. It does not show up on my Start Up Disk in my Mac, either. Though, I do see it in Finder with nothing in it (I can put stuff into it).
This indicates that your Bootcamp partition is still FAT, which also indicates that the Windows Installer has not been used to reformat it to NTFS yet, as required by Windows Installer. No Windows installation exists yet.
2: If I don't hold down option key with my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "Non-system disk, press any key to reboot". My keyboard is unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
The NVRAM in the Mac (as set by Bootcamp Assistant) is telling it to boot from the built-in Optical drive. Is it fully functional and has Windows Installer media in it or broken? Since no drivers have been loaded, the Keyboard/Mouse which are BT/USB, will not function.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009) - Technical Specifications, it has a built-in Optical drive...
Optical drive
Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
3: If I don't hold down option key and it is without my USB plugged in, it gives me a black screen saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My keyboard is, again, unresponsive. I have to hard shut down my computer.
No bootable media in Optical drive, hence this error. -
Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions

New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
"com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..

What is this icon? And wifes phone has more bars
My wife and I just got two new iphones 3GS. Bought at the same time from the same place. At home, her phone has more strength bars than mine, sometimes by two bars. Any ideas why this would be? They have the exact same covers and are the same phone.
