Late 2009 Mini: FireWire port - what size is it?

All I know is that the normal FireWire cable I have doesn't fit in the mini,s port.  Googling suggests that there exist 8,9,4, and 6 pin variants of FireWire, although it doesn,t state whether those correspond to different form factors.  Apple tech specs are certainly no help.  When I telephone around to best buy or radio shack, asking if they stock a normal FireWire to Mac mini forewire cable or adaptor, what should I really say?
Thanks,
Chap

What are you connecting to from the Mac Mini to?
The Mac Mini uses a 9 pin Firewire 800 cable.  Most PCs use a 4 pin Firewire 400 cable, and camcorders do too, though some only use a USB port which can't be adapted to Firewire.  A very few use the 6 pin Firewire 400 found on older Macs, which allowed the device to get power from another Firewire device.  You'll want one end to be Firewire 9 pin 800 for the Mac, but the other end may have to be something different.  http://www.macsales.com/ sells a full array of Firewire cables and so does the Apple Store.  It is rare that Radio Shack or Best Buy does, as they mainly focus on connecting PCs.

  • Late 2009 mini video problem

    Late 2009 mini, C2D 2.53, Mavericks, 8G RAM, 1TB SSD
The right hand side one-third of my screen looks as pictured. It's flickering, as if scan lines are moving side-to-side. This is a new problem. The mini has been working with this monitor for a year or so.
A PS3 connected to the same monitor doesn't do this. The mini is connected through the display port, while the PS3 is connected via hdmi-to-DVI.
I tried powering off and unplugging for a while. Didn't work. My Northbridge is running at 79C while I'm running firefox and a backup, which seems high but I don't know what's normal for this machine. The fan is running. The machine was open for memory/SSD installation just a few months ago, and there wasn't a lot of dust then even after four years of operation so I'm inclined to believe it's not a dust buildup now.
If this were a PC I'd change the video card and call it a day.
Does this look like I'll be getting a new mac? This is a very poor time to have a mini die, as the current offering is two years old.

I found my miniDVI-to-DVI adapter and that's working fine. I don't want to buy another display port cable just to find out if that's the problem, since I have the display working now.

  • Multi-Display Question for Late 2009 Mini

Hello, I have a very quick question. I was looking at attaching an additional monitor to my late 2009 Mac Mini Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz. It has two ports for video, the *Mini Displayport* and the *Mini DVI*. I was looking at springing for the $20 adaptor so that I could add a second VGA monitor via the displayport but I am curious, is there any additional hardware required to run a second monitor from my mini other than the adaptor? I would like to add to my desktop space so I want more than just a mirror. Is there any chance that someone here could please point me in the right direction?

Thank you! I appreciate your response. I didn't know that communities like this existed before I started trying to research my question here.
The adapter I was considering: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
I already am using a VGA adapter for the Mini DVI port which is what I run my current single screen off of.
The overview for the adapter seems to suggest that I can use it to extend my desktop (which is more than just creating a mirror?), but I am not sure that the model I have has that capability. I read somewhere that you need to add a second video card but I am not quite sure if that only applies to PCs.

  • "mid 2010" mac mini firewire port question

    Hi all:
I have a mac mini "mid 2010" version with internal optical drive and small firewire port in between the hdmi and ethernet port...
I want to connect a firewire device via this port, but my device & existing cable are of the older style size. I see different "pin numbers" being thrown around now in terms of port size & cable types etc. so that it looks like the 'old style' port on my device is a "6 pin."
What is it that I have on my mini? I would need a ?__ pin to 6 pin cable....
    tm

I've used this firewire adapter with my mini.

  • Late 2009 Mini with 10.6 and 8GB RAM crashes, please advise ?!

    Hi
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM and an Intel X25-M 160GB SSD. Running 10.6 fully updated and installed from scratch.
I have been getting out of the blue crashes while the system is most of the times idle. Can it be the 8GB Ram? The SSD runs latest firmware.
This is the log from the last crash which happened a little ago. Can anyone help please?

The Mini came with 1GB Samsung which I've upgraded to 2 x 2GB Samsung. Then after a few months I bought the 2 x 4GB OCZ which initially was ok, but after a few months the system would crash out of nowhere. So I wiped off the OS and reinstalled 10.6 After a few days my first crash appeared, which is where the logs on my first post come from.
I will keep my 4GB Samsung RAM for a few weeks and if no errors appear then it was most probably because of the RAM. I believe there is some incompatibility between the Mini and some memory chips as the memory itself come out clean from Memtest86 and has lifetime warranty as well.

  • Is a 1394 mini firewire port for DV cameras a regular firewire port?

I wanted use the mini 1394 mini fire wire port for some peripherals (IDE drive in firewire enclosure). I have digital camera cable with a 4pin? mini firewire plug and a 6pin? normal fire wire plug (both are males). Or mini fire wire ports for cameras only. All I will do is some backups, performance is not needed.
Just cause it fits, it don't make it right. (remember the ADB and Svhs cables?)
I do not want to be surprised with a burnt inexpensive resistor that cost very much to change.
    Thankyou in advance

No, Apple dropped the firewire port on the White Unibody MacBooks in 2009. If you you need a firewire port you'll have to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or get a used pre-2009 MacBook.

  • Late 2009 iMac firewire issue

I have tried installing an M Audio project mix on my late 2009 imac and its not recognised, tech support seems to think its the FireWire input on the mac. If I buy a repeater hub, will this work?
I have the correct drivers and firmware yet its not working
Have tried at 400 to 800 cable as well as an adapter with original cable

    Hi Tommy,
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what shows there?
If it says something like no FW detected...
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

  • Replacement optical drive for late 2009 Mini

I recently purchased a used late 2009 Mac Mini that works great except the optical drive does not read any CD's/ DVD's I have fed into it. I hooked up an external USB drive which reads hem fine, but is not bootable, in case I ever need to reinstall my OS.
Can anyone provide a model # of a reasonability priced internal slot load CD/ DVD reader- writer that is also Mac bootable?

There should be a compatible replacement superdrive-like optical drive
among those listed for Apple Mac Mini from OWC macsales site online.
They also appear to have several other upgrade & replacement parts...
An instruction video (free) can be seen on the bottom of their pages
on how to install optical and hard drives. Or use online iFixit guides.
About USB flash or externalHDD, be sure the HDD or SSD is formatted
to use with GUID and HFS+ Journaled; there may be other details that
need to be readfor these to work. External USB optical drives can be
used with bootable system discs, be sure to check retail seller returns
policy when you get some brand such as LG or other, so you may return
the unit should it not work out for your purposes. Some won't boot OS X.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have 1 firewire port, what do i do?

i have an external connected via usb 2.0...i have one firewire port and if i am capturing footage, i need that firewire port, so the usb port is my only option. am i right or wwrong. pelase help. what are osme solutions?

Daisy chain means to connect one device to another device to another device.
Most firewire drives have two ports to allow this type of connection.
Canon's implementation of the firewire protocol can create issues when there is a hard drive (or multiple hard drives) on the same bus. This does not happen to all Canon users, but to enough that it is something to worry about.
The usual solution is to add a second firewire bus. The real problem arises when you are trying to capture to a Mac that does not have the option of adding a second bus - an iMac for example.

  • Office Mac v. X (2004?) and late 2009 mini mac OS 10.6.8

I have Office mac v. X (2004 I believe.) I just need it for word processing. I am writer. All my writing projects are on my old G4, plan to transfer files and want to stay in synch with them etc. Nothing fancy needed.
I recently purchased a late 2009 3.1 mini mac OS 10.6.8.  Don't have the $$$ to purchase new version of Windows for Mac software.
If I install the 2004 software are there any technical issues I need to be aware of?

Office 2004 will run in Snow Leopard because Snow Leopard still supports Rosetta. But there will be compatibility issues. See alternatives from below.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Will this memory work in late 2009 Mini models?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-4-GB-2x2GB-4-DDR3-1066-MHz-PC3-8500-PC-LAPTOP-MACW0QQitemZ280458888132QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain0?hash=item414ca703c4

Yes, these will work fine in the late 2009 Mac minis.
    Buy with confidence.
For cross-reference, you can use Other World Computing's ram finder located here, and you will see the specs are exactly the same as the memory you are trying to buy off eBay.

  • Macbook late 2009 mini DVI to HDMI not working

I never had a problem using my external TV with my macbook untill now. I always connect it using a mini DVI cable to HDMI to TV. It worked pefectly for a while. But recently it stopped working, when i plug in my macbook to TV it shows a blue screen for few seconds and then nothnig. there's no signal on the TV.
    Any resolution will be appreciated.

I Started seeing this on my Mac Mini attached to my HDTV from DVI to HDMI after upgrading to 10.5.8.
I am running Spaces. Are you? Is it possibly related to this? I have seen a couple times where the screen was blue for some time and after pressing CTR-Left Arrow
to switch spaces, I would get my screen. Try switching spaces with the keyboard shortcut and see what you get.

I have tried all methods of migrating but the computer doesn't connect to the  other computer.
I have done 800 Firewire computer to computer by restarting and holding T but all I get is the Firewird logo bouncing around the screen but I have no access.
I have done ethernet to ethernet between the two computers but it just spins and I have connected both computers to the router but it still spins.
How can I get the older HD with all its settings on the new MINI?
    Thanx

Hello, just checking, is the older one the one in Target Mode?
Any other drives connected to either?
Does the older Mac in t mode show up in Finder or Disk Utility on the newer one?
