Late 2010 macbook air good enough for college?

So im kind of on a budget because i was unlucky in getting hours for work, and i need a new laptop for university.
best buy is selling the previous model of airs for around like $850 and it comes with office 2011
now, i dont know much about computers so i probably would never even notice the difference between the processors of the mbpro, or the new airs compared to this one
what i will mostly use this laptop is for typing up assignments, researching, web browsing, and youtube. maybe download a movie or two here and there.
i do plan on getting an external hard drive or whatever for this in the future, if ever the memory is beginning to be a hassle.
so yeah, my main question is, will it be good enough to last me 4 years of study lol
and if it matters, im studying commerce with some english courses here and there
btw the OS would probably be snow leopard.

Yes, the previous generation MBA's would be just fine for the things you are saying you would be using it for.  I would say you should have no problem having it last 4 years.  I also have a pc laptop that is 4 years old and I just graduated college and it got me through an entire business management bachelors program.  I just got a new mac for grad school.  Ps-you would know the difference between the prior and new generation MBA's..the new ones are about twice as fast, but aren't necessary for your needs.  In fact, maybe you could find a MacBook at a reduced price somewhere (now discontinued).

  • Late 2010 MacBook Air 13" Dead Pixels Common?

I received a new Late 2010 MacBook Air 13" notebook less than a month ago. The unit had a dead pixel towards the center of the display. I called Apple within the 14-day return period for advise on how to handle the issue. They asked me to send the unit in for repair as the closest Apple store was quite far away. I sent the unit out for repair and received it back a few days later.
To make things short, I had to send the notebook out for repair twice for the same issue, and both times the notebook was sent back with replacement displays, each of them also having dead pixels (apparently Apple's repair guys just pop in a new panel and don't actually check to make sure that the issue's been resolved).
Luckily, after over an hour arguing with a customer support supervisor over the phone, they decided to have me send the unit back to them for a new replacement. The replacement should be arriving within a week or so. However, I find myself somewhat hesitant to even bother opening the new replacement when it arrives. I've pretty much lost all confidence in Apple to supply an acceptable display in such a high-priced premium notebook, and am not sure what recourse I will have if the new unit once again comes scared with dead pixels. I thinking about selling it unopened on Amazon or something, and purchasing from another brand like Sony or something.
Question is, has anyone else experienced this issue with their new MacBook Airs? Are dead pixels on these new notebooks becoming more and more common, or do you think I've just had a serious run of bad luck? I can honestly say that I've never had to deal with something like this before with any of my other laptop / desktop displays. Should I even bother with the new unit or just take my business elsewhere.. I really don't think Apple with replace / repair the new unit if it displays the same pixel issues, and frankly, I've grown tired of arguing with them.

    Hi PlotinusVeritas,
    Thanks for the quick reply
I did wonder if it was the battery but the usb mouse's left click stops working once the trackpad is touched seems kinda weird... Kind of gave up troubleshooting, guess I'll have to contact an Apple store for repair
    Cheers

  • Kernal Panic in Late 2010 MacBook Air...on Shutdown

I have tried several sources of information in Apple Discussions to try to address this problem but to no avail (including the link to debug kernal panics).  I have a late 2010 MacBook Air (4GB RAM 1067 DDR runing 10.8.5--the SSD drive is an OWC 240 GB Aura Pro made especially for the late 2010 MBAs) which is now experiencing kernal panics on every other shutdown (Shutdown only).  I have reset the PRAM and SMC which seemed to work for awhile, but then it went back to frequent kernal panics on shutdown a day or so after resetting the PRAM/SMC.  I have repaired disk permissions and also deleted old programs, but again to no avail.  I am enclosing a copy of the Kernal Panic, and if anyone has any suggestions at this point, I would greatly appreciate it as I can't afford an expensive repair at this point.  Also, is there anyway I can test if my memory and SSD harddrive are still ok?
    Thanks very much,
    Rob

  • Upgrading a late-2010 MacBook Air to OS 10.8.2

I have a late-2010 MacBook Air running OS 10.6.8. I want to upgrade
to OS 10.8.2. Has the battery drain issue identified last August been fixed? Has Apple blessed the solution posted earlier this month:
"The fix for me was the following commands.  I was able trace it to the citrix receiver process tagging the cpu and subsequently draining the battery in record times...I couldn't kill the process in activity monitor, had to run this:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.citrix.agadminservice.plist
After i did this, the fan went silent, temp went down and batter life is back to 6+ hours like it is supposed to be!"?

There is no connection between Mountain Lion and removing the Citrix software to fix your problem. That was a third-party software incompatibility. Apple doesn't "bless" such solutions. They clearly state they are not responsible for problems with third-party incompatibilities.
So either you go forth and install or stick with Snow Leopard.

  • Late 2010 macbook air slow to wake from sleep

Hi, my late 2010 macbook air running mountain lion is slow to wake from sleep, so when i lift the lide the screen is unreactive and it take approx a minute before I am able to enter my password, I am just wondering if anyone else had had this problem and has any solutions because its annoying, I have also noticed that when my macbook is on charge this doesn't happen!
    Thanks!!

    Hi shaners2491!
I would suggest that you attempt to reset a part of your computer's software called the System Management Controller. Information on doing this can be found here:

If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

  • ITunes won't launch since maverick update on late 2010 macbook air

have tried downloading and reinstalling itunes on my late 2010 macbook air, but since maverick update itunes will not lauch and has to be force quit in order to close, this happens instantly on launch??

My machine was running quite slow too, especially boot time. Repairing permissions and zapping PRAM seemed to help out a lot. Further, if you want, you can disable hibernation and delete sleep image. I realize that most that run a Mac don't expect to do any tweaking, and hopefully Apple will come out with a SP soon that 'fixes' some of the issues that many are having. I don't think having 2GB of memory is the main issue, as many with 8GB of RAM are having the same issue. I did a lot of tweaking and Lion is working as well as Snow Leopard was on my MBA 11" with 2GB of RAM. You can also successfully run monoligual on your MBA, get rid of language packs you don't need and save 1.5GB.

  • Will a macbook air be enough for my needs?

    Hello everyone,
I'm looking to get a new mac, and I am in a bit of a dilemma between the MBA and the MBP (non retina).
First of all, let me explain that the reasons for not getting the retina are basically that I feel a bit uncomfortable/scared because of all the "ghosting problems" that one comes across almost everywhere on the web. Even though I know AppleCare could take care of it, etc, I just don't have the time in my daily workload to 1) go somewhere to get help, and 2) be a few days/weeks without a computer.
My current and near future needs are:
    1. Development tools
1a. I will run different development tools/IDEs (not at the same time, of course), like Netbeans, PyCharm, Eclipse, etc. Even Visual Studio 2012 on a           VM/Parallels.
1b. Compiling time is an issue
         1c. Git(hub)
    2. Document/File editing
2a. For this I'd need something for LaTex, and then Pages, MacVim, TextMate, etc.
    3. Web development (no graphics)
3a. I run a wiki for college which is located in a remote server, a personal web page, and a forum.
    4. Browsing/Info, Mail, Newsgroups, Skype, etc
4a. Typical web browsing for information (no facebook, no twitter, etc), RSS feeds, etc.
4b. I haven't gotten used to "Mail", so I use Thunderbird for mail and newsgroups
4c. I need to run Skype
    5. Virtualization
5a. I will run either a VM or Parallels for a virtual windows and a virtual linux machine to test out stuff and use programs which are
required for the university. I will most probably not have them both running at the same time, but I can never be sure.
    6. VPN
6a. I will need to use a secure remote connection to the university.
    7. SFTP, SSH, etc
To connect to remote servers in the university.
    8. Long hours of staring into the screen
    9. Portability.
9a. I don't mind dragging weight with me, but only if I really need it. Sometimes I have to get up and go to another classroom, or just take a break to get a      coffee, etc, and I need to bring my laptop with me since I can't leave it around unattended.
    10. Battery life
Although I will always try to plug in, this will not always be possible and in such cases I need to rely on my laptop to not let me down in times of need.
I don't do any video/music/foto editing. I'm an engineering major specializing in embedded systems but also need to take classes in databases, Java/C# development, etc. I know most IDEs are bloated, and so it is important that I get enough power to run at least one of them at a given time without experiencing lag or crashes.
I've worked on 12,5", 13,3" and 15" screens and I am able to cope with all of those. I have a cheap 22" monitor in the dorm where I can just plug in my computer when I'm home, but needless to say I am barely home...
I know the MBAs have recently gotten a very good upgrade, and are very well built, whereas the MBPs have a CD/DVD drive which I don't need and still use a slightly oldier technolgy. Also, one of my concerns is about the possible "breakability" of the MBA. I don't know how strong it is, but I need to feel comfortable enough to have it in my backpack while taking the bus/train/subway full of people and not being afraid that it'll break because I forgot to put the back between my legs or something like it. With the pro, I'd be pretty conscious of it because of the weight, and also, the big and thick laptop won't just "break" ;-)
I'd love to get some input/ideas on this to try and make the wisest decision possible.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Macbook Air and iPad for College/ General Use?

Hi all, I've recently gotten a tax rebate to the tune of £1500 pounds and since I'm returning to college in September I'd like to purchase a MacBook Air in order to have a way to take down notes in a far more efficient form. I currently own a 2010 iMac so I can used that for storage and entertainment meaning the MacBook doesn't need to be anything special in terms of performance.
I currently have two options that I'm interested in, buy an 11 inch MacBook Air (Don't need the 13 if I'm honest) and I'll have enough money to buy an iPad (for use as a Filofax/ E-Reader/ something to prat about on).
OR I could sink the money into a MacBook Pro (putting extra to it of course) and get more performance.
Or maybe there's a third option that I've missed? Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Seriously, look at the specs and price...
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopmac/family/macbookair?afid=p219%7CGOUS&cid=OAS-US-KWG-CPUMacBookAir-US
    Then compare... for example...

    Or try dell.

Then ask yourself that question again.
You should be able to get a 6-9 cell quad core with 4-8gigs ram and a 64 bit OS for 1/3 the price of the core duo 2gig air. 9 cell battery is where your cost goes up, it's the difference between 9 hours (6 cell) and 13 hours (9 cell) of battery life.
But a quad core 4 gig 6 cell 64bit OS laptop will run you about $499 -$699. And it will bury the $1600 air 500 feet in the ground without breaking a sweat, all while watching p0rn, playing call of duty and streaming netflix as it digs the hole.
I guess the real question is, do you want to buy a computer to make a fashion statement, or do you want to buy a computer to use as a computer?

  • My late 2010 MacBook Air suddenly crashes and will not stay on.

I returned from a trip during which I used my MacBook Air (Late 2010) constantly.  Upon leaving the hotel I closed the computer and put it into my carrier and did not open it until arriving at home later that day.  There was moisture on the keyboard and screen at the corresponding position in an area about the size of a 50¢ piece,  I cleaned that up and turned the machine on and it booted up and then created. Several times it would turn off and on a few times without any input from me. At times it will boot up like all is well but with any keystroke it crashes to a black screen.  If I had to guess, I'd say the HD is toast.  It was replaced under warranty once already. The moisture is a complete mystery.   Any ideas?

What method were you using for travel? I think sometimes condensation can happen in flight. Sounds like there was more moisture on the motherboard as well. Leave it for a few days in the sunlight if possible and see what happens after that.

  • My late 2010 Macbook Air fails to start up

I took my MacBook Air (late 2010 models) with me on my travels to Asia. A few days into my trip, I went back to my laptop. After opening the lid, the Macbook started up from the hibernation state as normal. Whilst I was typing in my password, the laptop suddenly switched off no warnings given. Very briefly I thought to see the screen turn white before it went black.
Now, the laptop does not start at all. After pressing the power button, there's no response. The fans don't spin up and there is no sound or display feedback. It's basically completely dead. I have tried using the known key combinations to reset the System Management Controller, but still no luck. Many recovery procedures suggested by Apple do not work, since i can not start up the computer.
Has somebody got experience with this issue so I can diagnose the problem based on these symptoms?

Hi, thanks for the response. I did try most of these steps and they did fail on me.
I decided to take my laptop to the approved service providers. Luckily my laptop's issues could be resolved by the technicians. They found that the power supply chip was faulty.
Since they replaced this chip, my MacBook now starts up perfectly normal again.

  • Macbook Air or Pro for College?

With the announcment of the new Macbook Air with all day battery life, faster graphics, and better flashstorage I don't know if I should go with the 13 MBA or the 13 MBP with Retina. I will be a engineering major but I took a private tour at Colorado State and everyone said that you don't need a personal computer for all your work its all done on the school network. If my laptop would only be personal would it be smart to just get the Macbook Air? I just wish it had a Retina Display.
    Thanks

When I purchased my MBP 13, I considered the air. However, I found out that the Air's do not have a cdrom. Meaning I cannot put my own music on it, if it's off a cd. I can't install any games I may decide I want. I couldn't install any software, either.
Both of these products do basically the same things, however remember that if you do get the air, you won't have a cd rom/dvd drive.
The 13" Mbp Retina does not have an optical drive either, so there is no difference.

  • Is a 13 inch 128GB i5 4GB RAM MacBook Air strong enough for Final Cut Pro X?

I am just quite worried if I buy the MacBook Air, will it be strong enough to support Final Cut Pro X?

  • I have a late 2010 MacBook air, should I upgrade to Mountain Lion?

My Air has 2GB of RAM and I was wondering if I should upgrade or not.  Thanks in advace for you help.

shldr2thewheel gives the same advice I do - though I tend to be more forceful in my no. 2GB just isn't enough RAM for Mt Lion unless you are willing to run only 1 app at a time and spend some time watching the pretty beach ball. Even with an SSD, 2 GB is barely sufficient and with a conventional hard drive not acceptable.

  • Deleted iCal and Address Book from late 2010 Macbook Air

    Good Evening -
Can someone tell me, with the Airbook Mac OSX reinstall on the USB drive, can I do a reinstall of the iCal and address book applications without deleting everything on the hard drive? I would like to restore these applications without having to do a full reload of the whole OS and would hate to possible lose all my files/have to reinstall all software, etc.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated - have been searching online for a couple hours and have not been able to find any assistance on partial restore with the OS software on USB/package differences.
    Thank you!

In order to install individual applications that are part of OS X (both iCal and *Address Book* are) you will need to download Pacifist and use that to install. You can locate it at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/6812/pacifist
You other alternative is to do an archive and install following these instructions:
