Late 2011 MacBook Pro - how much hard drive space used for OS, iLife, system files?

Dear Community,
I've just taken delivery of a used MacBook Pro.  It's pristine, hardly used.
It has a 750Gb hard drive with 500Gb free.  Does this sound about right or could there be hidden files lurking unseen?  The previous user had installed Microsoft Windows but I can't find any sign of a partition for that and the previous owner said he'd erased everything except Lion, iLife and system files, etc.
I looked in System Info which it isn't showing a large partition.  I also looked in Disk Utiliy under Partition which seems to show un "current" a single drive with no partitions and around 200Gb used.  It just seems a lot for the basic files.
I have another 100Gb to add to that when I migrate my PowerBook over in the next few days.  That's okay while I have the current drive but I've purchased a 500Gb Crucial SSD drive to replace it so that will leave 200Gb free.
I know I can remove the super drive and put my 750Gb drive in its place but I need super drive for viewing DVDs.
I would grateful for any feedback.
K

Thanks everyone for your help with this.
After hours of trying to figure this out I located around 150Gb in total but found there was no way of removing references to the original owner whose "Home" file in Finder remained prominent.
So I elected to erase the drive and reinstall Lion using Disk Utility.  It took two hours or so to download and I took the precaution of plugging directly into Ethernet rather than my Airport.
When the download was complete I was able to input fresh details so all trace of the original owner has been removed.
Once that was done I upgraded to Lion 10.7.5 and was able to download Garage Band, iMovie and iPhoto for free from the App Store.
Anybody contemplating doing the same should check that their machine is elligible before erasing as Apple does an auto check before downloading.
Here's the state of the hard drive now:
Thanks again and what a great resource the community forum's are:-)

  • How can i tell how much hard drive space my website is taking up on my computer?

I have a website that i build through iweb and publish via mobile me.  i have about 200 podcasts on the site, and I am trying to figure out how much hard drive space this is taking up on my computer.  these files are not in itunes, and i'm not concerned about the space they are taking up in my cloud, i just want to know how much space on my computer they are taking up because i'm trying to decide if i should move my iweb site to a different computer to alleviate some space issues.  any help would be much appreciated.

Check the size of the Domain.site2 file that is in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  it contains all of the files used to create and publish your site.  I'm not sure if it copies the podcasts into it or not. You can open the domain package and do a search for them. Just don't move, rename or delete any files inside that package or your site is toast.

  • How do I tell how much hard drive space I have left?

I have an iMac v. 10.5.8 and want to know how to check how much hard drive space I have left. Thank you!

Select the drive and choose Get Info from the File menu, or open any folder on it and choose Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu if it isn't already displayed.

  • Late 08 Macbook Pro - "Clunk" from hard-drive when moved

There has been a lot of posts about clicking noises from the hard-drive I've noticed. I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro about a month ago. My concern is a clunking noise coming from the hard-drive I presume (right of the trackpad). This only happens when I pick the laptop up when it is running. The closest Apple store is 2 and half hours away so I haven't had time to take a trip and bring it in. Any help would be appreciated.

That is your sudden motion sensor, which parks the drive if it detects sudden movement or a potential fall. That is a good thing.

  • New MacBook Pro - lot less hard drive space than Powerbook G4 -

I very successfully used migration assistant to move all files and settings to my new MacBook Pro from my old Ti Powerbook G4 (550). The Powerbook shows 50 GB available, whereas my new notebook shows only 35GB available - both having a 80GB hard drive. Does the new notebooks use that much more hard drive than the old ones? Or is there some cleaning up I missed. Thanks.

    Macbook Pro 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

sort of on topic... I have the 120gb drive in my MBP and I have already filled it up. I have the same programs on my 80gb powerbook, but the universal versions take up 2 to 3 times the space. Its very frustrating! I wanted to edit video on my MBP, but because Final Cut is soooooo much larger now than it was before I only have 12gb left on my hard drive. I tried removing some of the excess fluff... Help files and sample projects, but the increase in size is due to many more fonts and templates and other things that I could use. I would like to get and external drive to store my media, but without a firewire 800 the connections are kind of slow. The question is... Is there a way to either change my hard drive to a larger one or have a mobile external hard drive that i can connect through ethernet or express card that runs on battery. I am open to any other ideas or suggestions. Thanks
PS are there any good programs to help get rid of excess stuff like idvd etc... or should i just use spotlight and dump them into the trash? being a former PC person i'm always a little afraid to throw anything installed away because i've had some serious problems in the past after trying to rid my computer of programs.

  • How much hard drive space does Tiger need to be installed?

I have a small hard drive that I want to set up as a boot drive. What is the minimum disk space required to install Tiger? Thanks.

For an emergency boot drive 20GB will work, possibly even a 10GB if you omit several unused Languages & Printer drivers.
While a finished install may end up only 2.5 GB, during installation many temp & VM files are used, possibly as much as 10GB for a 2.5 GB install.
IMO, 20GB is not enough for use on anything but Emergency use.
If you're not going to install from your Optical, how are you going to do it?

  • How much Hard drive space lion uses

How do I find out how HD space my upgraded Lion OS and Apps are using?  I am purchasing a new iMac with 256GB SSD for the main drive and 1 TB for the secondary drive, but I want to make sure that 1. My current apps and lion will fit on the new HD as well as have room for a windows BootCamp install.  Is there a way to find out?

    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
In Finder you can under View>Show staus bar  This will tell how much available space you have on your HD.
You can in Terminal copy and paste:
    df -H
