Late 2011 Macbook Pro Unexpectedly Restarts

My Macbook Pro has twice in two hours unexpectedly restarted it's self, both times I have been using Chrome. The crash report gives a different reason each time.
MacBookPro8,2, Intel Core i7, 2.2 GHz, 8 GB
I have attached both crash logs.
As of right now I'm blaming Chrome. Any insight would be very appreciated.

Stop using Chrome and use Safari. Also, consider uninstalling the following:
Sophos AV software because it is not necessary. Restart after. Be sure you use their uninstaller or see:
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    1. AppZapper
    2. AppDelete
    3. Automaton
    4. Hazel
    5. AppCleaner
    6. CleanApp
    7. iTrash
    8. Amnesia
    9. Uninstaller
  10. Spring Cleaning

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro constantly restarting

Like the title suggest, automatically restarts while it's in use. this is the error report I get. Sometimes the restarts give a grey screen that appears after the apple logo and nothing woud happen, and this takes a few restarts to boot back in.

Looks like a Graphics issue your graphics card may be bad
try turning off your mac and hit the power button then hold shift to boo safe mode then after everything is loaded without a panic then shut down then boot normaly if problem keeps happening i would recommend to take your mac to be serviced at a apple retailer!

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro Restarts When Power Connected

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.2 GHz with 8GB Ram with  OS X 10.8.2 and a series of unfortunate events.
When I connect the magsafe adapter to the computer, after it has been shut down completely overnight, with the lid closed, the Macbook attempts to restart. The restart fails beause the lid is closed but leaves my Macbook in an unstable state. Unless I do a PRAM reset whenever this happens, I will have at least one random shutdown, usually within the first  half hour of use after the computer restarts itself. I have also reset the SMC controller, checked the hard drive for errors and tested the memory. I have been careful to make sure that the computer shuts all of the way down before closing the lid and disconnecting power. As far as I can tell at this point, starting the computer on battery, and subsequently connecting the magsafe adapter, does not cause any problems.
I never saw this behavior until I installed Mountain Lion.

Run an Apple hardware test and see if that picks up any problems.  If this phenomenon is consistently repeatable, I recommend taking it to a repair facility for a diagnosis.  This clearly is not normal operation.  I hope that you might be still in the warrantee period.
    Ciao.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro stuck at spinning wheel of death after a Thunderbolt issue, HD erasing and fresh Lion install from Recovery HD. Please help me!!!

So, I think the title says it all, but to give you a little more info:
I connected my late 2011 MacBook Pro to my TV using a Thunderbolt HDMI adapter, and closed the lid. When I opened it, it wouldn't show the login screen, so I restarted using power button. Got stuck at the Apple logo with the spinning wheel. So I booted the Recovery HD and found out it was a HD problem, so I (reluctantly) erased the HD and installed Lion from scratch. When it rebooted (after DOWNLOADING the Lion components) I got some terminal commands (sorry for not being more specific, still a noob when it comes to Mac) and then the screen faded and a message appeared saying I needed to reboot the computer. So I did. 3 effing times. Then I got stuck AGAIN at the spinning wheel, and I'm currently with that on my screen. I'm trying the forums before calling Apple (my computer's still within the 90 days of warranty) because it's not yet 9 A.M. where I live

can you go back to recovery mode then open disk utility.
in disk utility, higlight the disk, the one saying the brand and size then click on repair disk under first aid tab
if it repairs fine, that's okay
if repair was not successful, go to partition and change current to 1 partition then apply
    install lion again
    hope this helps

  • Windows 7 install on late 2011 MacBook Pro without bootcamp (performance issues)

Hey guys I'm hoping I can get this issue resolved. I have purchased a late 2011 MacBook Pro (radeon 6750m 1gig). I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 without bootcamp. Having real issues with game performance like world of Warcraft. I have done this with an older unibody Mac and it ran great (for any non believer)... But now this time around I'm getting horrible fps in game. I'm thinking it may be driver related it buy I am having trouble finding the right drivers to see if that's then issue. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Shotgun00 wrote:
That is completely false. There is no real need to leave OS X on the Mac if you don't want to, especially with Win 7 or 8. That may of been true with Windows XP but not anymore.
The problem with leaving OS X installed is then you are really limited with what you can do with the drive. You can only have one Windows partition and if you fool with it at all Windows will no longer boot. you can't even change the OS X partition otherwise Windows would boot
Windows 7 will install all by itself. No need for any Boot loaders or Hack Boot system. Pop the Win 7 DVD in the DVD drive and restart. Windows will be installed all by itself. But you do need the Apple support files.
In the end if you are going to run Windows on a computer by itself then you really should not buy a Mac. The hardware is the same and as to the OPs perceived better built quality I personally do not see it. And if you actually read some of the posts on this and other Mac forums you will see that perceived build quality is just a bunch of hype, in my opinion.
To the OP. You aren't missing anything.
If you had carefully read what I wrote, I merely said that doing the install on a blank drive wasn't a good idea. That's because it can create issues the OP is having. A Mac's hardware is no different than a comparable Windows machine, but the EFI/BIOS/Firmware is. Macs are in something of a no-man's land in this regard, as they have neither an old-school BIOS or modern UEFI of recent Windows-based notebooks. I'm willing to bet that the performance problems the OP is having relates to the fact that a straight EFI install on a modern MBP "enables" (for lack of a better word) automatic graphic switching. The capability manifests, but the functionality is not there. Enterprising individuals have been trying to get graphic switching in Windows to work as it does on the OS X side ever since MacBooks debuted with this abliity but with zero success.
Using Boot Camp bypasses this, as the discreet GPU is enabled full-time in Windows. Thus, you will realize proper performance.
As far as perceived build quality, Apple machines are at the high end of the consumer notebook spectrum. They're certainly better than most of the other machines you can pick up at your local Best Buy, but they fall short of business-class machines such as the Dell Latitude/Precision, HP ProBook/EliteBook, and Lenovo ThinkPad.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro with SSD Freezing

    Hello,
I have a late 2011 macbook pro and about six or so months ago I have it a new lease on live with a Samsung 840 SSD (non pro).
I haven't really had any problems with that until recently - the machine started locking up on wakeup. This meant that the beachball of doom would start and each program would gradually in turn become unresponsive. Shutdown command wouldn't work and would time out, force quit wouldn't open, and although I could move the mouse around and sometimes switch between programs, they didn't work and the only cure was to hold the power button until it switched off.
This has also started happening just when the computer has been on for a certain amount of time *without sleeping*. For example, if I watch an episode of a tv show, by the end of it the video is still running but all of the other programs are locked up - clicking out of VLC causes the beachball of doom. This also happens in other programs - it's even happened as I've been writing this, and the only remedy seems to be a hard restart.
The problem doesn't seem to occur in windows. In OSX I have 'put hard drives to sleep' turned off, and TRIM enabled. I also disables the sudden movement sensor. I have also reset the SMC.
Does anyone know of a remedy short of a full reinstall of Mountain Lion?
Oh and I used samsung magician in windows to update the firmware of the drive. It reports that the drive should be fine.
Thanks very much for any help anyone can give me with this!

anything is possible - corrupt files - corrupt drivers - it could be anything.
try doing a nvram/pram reset and see if that sorts it out.
i have ssd installed in all my Macbook/Macbook Pro and have never had any issues.
Then again, I don't have windows installed in any of them.
hopefully the nvram/pram reset sorts it out for you.
once you've done that reset - go back to system preferences - startup disk and select your ssd as the startup drive again - then restart it again.

  • OS 10.7.5 pinwheels Late 2011 Macbook Pro

I am using a late 2011 MacBook Pro and I am getting recurrent pinwheels no matter what I do. Even booting into safe mode, I get them but it usually takes a little while of normal use until they happen. At first I thought it was Chrome, but after I started using Safari the behavior continued. In the console, this sometimes happens right before the pinwheels start:

I remove the istat widget and the excessive fan speeds ceased. However, the machine will still become unresponsive and begin pinwheeling after a random amount of time, never less than 10 minutes. I have run hardware tests and there does not appear to be anything wrong with the logic board or the RAM. I do have an SSD installed but over one-third of the drive is free space.
I have had the activity monitor open when this happens, but I cannot tell what process(es) are using the system resources because it becomes unresponsive too. I have tried updating to Mountain Lion, but I can't get it downloaded in full before the machine pinwheels again. I tried doing a Lion Internet Recovery, but I only got 10-15% done before it errored out and told me that it couldn't finish the download. After that, I could attempt to restart the installation, but then it did not see the SSD at all. I no longer have the original HDD to test the unit, but it appears that the SSD is the problem. I am looking for help in any other areas before I install a new piece of hardware.

  • I have a late 2011 macbook pro and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated

I have a late 2011 macbook pro running OSX Lion, and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated. Im wondering what can i do to stop this or get it to update.

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro.

Hi i cannot change the brightness on my late 2011 macbook pro. It is stuck on the lowest level in which i can't view the screen without a flash light. Please i need help how to solve this. I was on my computer when i checked the back which it was really dusty, i tried unscrewing the bottom however some screws were too tight so i took it upon myself and got a rod and startedremoving the dust off the vents and i may have clicked something as i closed the lid on the macbook i could hear the sounds still from the film but the lid was closed as i opened it back up the brightness was on low but sounds were still playing. All the buttons work , all of the F keys, apart from the brightnes keys. I can shine a tourch on the screen and see the display but the brightness will not change but i can see when i click the brightness it says it changes. I have connected it to a spare tv i have via hdmi and i really need help as this is my primary computer and i need it for work when going away. Thank you

You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked.

AirPlay Mirroring is supported on your Mac, but it needs OS X Mountain Lion (10.8). See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
    You have two possibilities:
    1. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion to upgrade to this OS X. Then, you will find the AirPlay Mirroring icon at the top right of the display, on the menu bar, or on System Preferences > Displays.
    2. Keep OS X Lion and use AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com
Both options work properly, but I recommend AirPlay Mirroring as it doesn't need a third-party program

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro iPhoto 9.2.2 Graphical Glitch

Please see the following video I have posted on youtube. The problem is happening on the late 2011 13"inch Macbook Pro with intel 3000 HD graphics. The problem is limited to iPhoto window. Is it a faulty GPU? or a Software problem?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9m1FD6MYs0&feature=youtu.be
    Any feedback will be welcomed.
    Thanks

If anyone has the same setup. Then I would love to know if you have the same problem.  I have included the steps that recreate the problem. I have sent a bug report to Apple about this, but I am still not sure if this is a hardware issue or a software one.
I believe this glitch is specific to the Intel 3000 HD graphics card, as I am unable to replicate the problem on a Mid-2009 Macbook Pro or a Late 2009 iMac.
    My Setup:
    A) Late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz with Intel 3000 HD graphics.
    B) iPod touch 4th Gen 8GB, Original iPad 16GB, SDHC 4Gb Card
I have been able to replicate 3 times out of 5 this glitch by following these steps.
    1) Connect your iPod touch or iPad or SDHC card to your Macbook Pro.
    2) Wait for iPhoto to launch.
3)Once iPhoto is launched. Select iPhoto from the Menu bar and click EXIT iphoto.
    4) Relaunch iPhoto since your iPod touch or iPad or SDHC card is still connected, iPhoto will show you device photos first. Deselect that by:-
    5) Clicking on Photos option under Library and then hovering mouse over your Photos. The glitch should show up.
    6) Quit iPhoto
    7) Relaunch iPhoto
    8) Deselect Device photos by clicking on Photos under Library
    9) Hover mouse over Library Photos. The glitch should be still present.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro can't boot after Yosemite install

After installing Yosemite on this late 2011 MacBook Pro it stops about a third of the way into booting up. It displays a null sign. I can boot into recovery disk, or external HD (I don't have a backup of this system, but can boot from my MacBook Air's clone) if I use option-R or just option at startup. It won't go into Safe Mode. From the ext HD I have reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP, but it still freezes mid-boot. Disk Utility repair permissions, repair HD, zap PRAM, SMC, I've tried all of these (from reading advice here, and PM from Ogelthorpe). I have copied the Etre Report below. Suggestions?

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Quit DU when it is finished and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
