Late 2011 MBPr, Bootcamp w Win8 & 27" Thunderbolt Display

Hi there,
I have a 17" late 2011 MBPr. Today I purchased a Thunderbolt display. On MacOs everything is working just fine. I have checked for updates and my system is up to date. Also when I run Windows 8 as a VM (Parallels) the Thunderbolt Display works just fine.
However when I boot into Windows 8 using Bootcamp my Thunderbolt display is recognized, but works at a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels!!! The display on My MBPr is the main display and the Thunderbolt Display is configured as an extended display. I cannot change the resolution.
Any ideas how I can enable the native resolution? Anything I might be missing?

I defintely have the Boot Camp drivers installed. I am just not able to see which version. I remember I installed them when Windows 8 support came out, which is not too long ago a couple of months at most.
I see on the support site that Version: 5.0.5033 is available. I suspect this is the version that I already have installed.
Since I cannot find the version I am running I will download and install these drivers just in case.

Download and intall the Windows Support software. You can start Bootcamp Assistant again and only select the option to download the support software. Then follow the instructions to save and install the support software.

Both Internal hard drives fail on Macbook Pro late-2011

Both internal hard drives (SSD and HDD) failed on Macbook Pro late-2011.
Setup: MBP closed with Thunderbolt display attached.
Problem on HDD-A
I called Apple Support to log an issue with my MBP2011. The system is made up of 2 drives - SSD (128GB) and HDD with 2 partitions HDD-A and HDD-B(original 750GB).
HDD-A has LionOSX 10.7 and HDD-B is storage. SSD has LionOSX on it as well. I normally boot HDD-A.
I was working on HDD-A and the Kernel Panic screen appeared prompting me to shutdown the machine and start it up again.
I tried to reboot HDD-A and the grey progress bar appeared for a long time. I then forced shutdown and rebooted into SSD.
I was able to boot from SSD and then I opened Disk Utility to check the drives. I verified the disk for HDD-A and there was an error. I then tried to repair disk and it couldn't repair it. A dialogue said the disk could not be repaired and that data should be backed up.
HDD-A was not visible in Finder but HDD-B was accessible.
I verified HDD-B and it was "ok".
I shutdown, booted from SSD, disk utility HDD-A and the same message occurred.
I called Apple Support and they advised that I boot from my external HDD which was a clone of HDD-A.
Solution
I was successfully able to boot from the Clone HDD-A.
HDD-A was able to be accessed and I could retrieve the files from HDD-A.
I copied over the latest files from HDD-A to an external drive.
Same Problem on SSD
Boot from SSD, i started working for about 3 hours, with the lid closed, and attached to the ACD.
Kernel Panic screen happened again on the SSD.
Couldn't boot boot from either SSD or HDD-A.
I booted from Cloned HDD-A, Disk Utility verify and repair returned errors on SSD. The same issue had occurred on the second drive.
Disk Recovery from a boot recovery USB thumb, Disk Utility, erased SSD, verify was ok.
Tried to install then there was an install error saying that SSD was damaged (large triangle warning icon). Tried 3 times, failed.
Boot from Recovery Drive HDD-A, downloaded LionOSX.
Next steps
Format HDD-A and HDD-B into 2 partitions
Install LionOSX on HDD A.
Note:
I did not do any software updates for about a week before 14.04.2012 and suspect it might be due to the virus.
I normally work with the lid closed and attached to the ACD, I also suspect that overheating caused both drives to fail. However, I have been using this system with the lid closed for atleast a week. One Kernel Panic screen occured.

Depending on what you are doing on the computer, how hard you are working the computer, it should not overheat. And if it does it should shut down or get very slow because when it starts to overheat the CPU will be throttled back to a lower Ghz speed and or just shut down so it doesn't cause damage to the CPU. The Kernel Panics are a sign that something else is going on. This could be software or hardware.
If after wiping the drives and reinstall Lion on the SSD if the system is running OK then the drives are fine, IE they are not bad. There is something else corrupting them. Again this could be hardware or software, but I doubt it is heat. And using the MBP ion clamshell mode should not cause overheating or excessive heating of either of the drives.
Have you installed iStat Pro or Menu and kept and eye on the temps? If not install iStat Pro and keep and eye on the temps. I bet they do not get above the 150°- 180°F mark which although hot is not overheating.
Be very careful when calling Apple. Removing the DVD drive and installing a hard drive in that bay could void your warranty. The DVD is not a User Removable part and Apple frowns on doing that. So if you call them do not mention that you have replaced the DVD drive with another HDD.
Honestly I suspect you have a hardware problem. But the only way to know that is to install just Lion and your basic programs and run the system. Leave out any AV type software, if you are running some. If you don't get any kernel panics thenn install some of your other software, one programm at a time. If with just the OS and basic software you get a kernel panic then it is hardware related and needs to be checked out by Apple. If you do that re-install the DVD and the original HDD with just the OS on it before you take it in.

Should I buy the 15" MBPr or a 13" MBPr w/Thunderbolt Display?

I have recently saved up enough money to spend and I am thinking of upgrading from my late 2011 MBP. I am thinking of possibly getting the higher end model of the 15" MBPr or I would be able to get a lower 13" MBPr along with a 27" Thunderbolt Display. I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons, but am indecisive of which is a better option. I like the portability of the 13" but I also like the power of the 15". I am also keen on it because of the retina display, I've been using the late 2011 15" MBP and I think it's time I made the switch to retina. I'm also a graphic design student who is a heavy user of Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Microsoft Office. I also am a frequent web browser and social media nut. So I was hoping to get some outside thoughts! Thanks in advance!

The 15" Retina base model does have more RAM (8GB) and flash storage (256GB) along with an i7 processor. In my opinion, for what you'll be working on, the 15" would be a better choice. The 13" is a bit more portablem, but I personally haven't had portability issues with my 15" rMBP.
The choice, ultimately, is yours.
You might also want to look at refurbished rMBPs. You can save some money if you find one that fits your needs. I picked up a 13" 2012 rMBP (8GB RAM/256GB flash storage) from there, saved 28% and it's like brand new.

Install Windows 8 on 13" late-2011 macbook pro (incompatible?)

I'm trying to install Windows 8 on my Macbook Pro 13" i7 (late-2011) using bootcamp. I've got Mountain Lion 10.8.3, which I assume means Boot Camp 5. According to this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US), my computer should support Windows 8.
But when I run Boot Camp Assistant, during the part where it's downloading files, it pops up and says something like "This computer is only compatible with Windows 7. Do you want to continue?"
Why can't I install Windows 8? My computer should be compatible, according to everything I've read online.

I have had Windows 8 running on the 13" MacBook Pro i7 16GB (Late 2011) since December 2012 before the release of OSX 10.8.3 and it worked fine after a few missing drivers were located.
After the release of 10.8.3 and the new BootCamp 5 Drivers the MBP functions perfectly.
Don't burn the Windows Support Software to a USB but burn to a DVD unzipping them from here:

We have internal DVD's so use it for both the Windows 8 install and the BootCamp 5 Support Software and forget the USB route.

Boot Camp is
a misname for an Apple oriented GPart etc to partiton a drive for use by Windows natively, drivers, a control panel for Windows, and download utility for those drivers.
You are running Windows natively which is 93% the same as running on most any PC hardware.
So it should.

My daughter's 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen (null sign displays) after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. I reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP HD, but it still hangs in mid install. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the problem? I'd happily put 8 GB in if it seems probable that would solve the problem. I've tried all the suggested procedures that I've seen posted here. Disk Utility, and my older version of DiskWarrior indicate the HD is OK. I have DiskWarrior 5 on order.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down. If successful, you should see two HDD icons, Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.

Apple Thunderbolt Display-Connection confusion!

OK, I have quite a lot to explain here so this is going to be a big post.
In September, I'll be going to University to study Computer Games Animation and as such over the past few months I've sorted out the computer I need for the course, or I thought I did anyway. I intended to buy a Mac Pro (the upcoming model, following the rumours of an early August update for 2011) and two Apple 27" Cinema Displays. Along with this, I was going to purchase the Atlona HD620 (on one side of the device there is an MDp output and HDMI output to put in your Mac and 360 into and the other side is another MDp output to your display) to connect my Xbox 360 to one of the displays (MDp). I was aware that the HD620 doesn't work with the 2011 iMac due to Thunderbolt and thus it was possible I would run into the same problem with the new Mac Pro and displays. I kept my plan however and decided I'd look into it when the time came.
....and then it did.
Yesterday as I'm sure you're aware, Apple went and released the new Thunderbolt Display which did away with MDp completely. I looked into the new displays and Thunderbolt and as I now understand it, Thunderbolt is backwards compatible with MDp but obviously, MDp can't be forward compatible with Thunderbolt. In other words you can insert a Thunderbolt input cable into a MDp output but you can't insert a MDp input cable into a Thunderbolt output (right?). This would make sense regarding the HD620 and the new iMac as the iMac only possesses a Thunderbolt output forcing you to input Mdp from the HD60 into the Thunderbolt and thus, doesn't work.
This however is not the case with the Thunderbolt display. As I'm sure you're also aware, the Thunderbolt display possesses an output AND the built-in Thunderbolt cable. Now I wonder if using the Thunderbolt cable into the MDp output on the HD620 would work? The HD620 would then be connected to the Mac Pro via the Apple Thunderbolt cable from the (highly presumed) Thunderbolt output on the Mac Pro into the MDp output on the other side of the device and I'm hoping this would work. I'm also wondering, despite using Thunderbolt cables between the Mac Pro and the display, even if this does work, would the MDp element on the HD620 cancel out the USB outputs, speakers, FaceTime camera and mic functionalities on the display?
I hope this makes some sense, I've been rattling my brain over this for months and as much as I love the new displays, it's a real pain that they've come out now and shaken my plans. I hope there are members here who know what they're talking about a lot more than I do on the subject, my understanding here could be completely mistaken. Infact the more I think about it and the more I learn, the less confident I become. If this isn't right, is there any way this set up could work?

I'm in the same predicament. I'm making a series of purchase decisions, and unfortunately some are on hold until I can arrive to a solid conclusion. To give you some insight, I had the MacBook air with the MDp and just switched to a MacBook Air with the Thunderbolt primarily because I have a iMac 27" w/ Thunderbolt at the office i wanted to use as a external monitor.
With that said, I'm still waiting to decide on what to buy for the home to extend the MacBook Air as I have four choices:
- Cinema Display 27" w/ Mini DisplayPort
- Thunderbolt Display 27"
- iMac 27" with Thunderbolt (similar to office) (used in target display mode from time to time)
- iMac 27" with Mini DisplayPort (used in target display mode from time to time)
The burning question is, how do you plan to use the display and then determine if compatibility exists in those methods. In my case, I plan to use the display from OSX as well as Windows via Bootcamp. It turns out, through relentless research with a visit to the Apple store and purchases, I arrived to the colusions here:

It seems Mini DisplayPort works all around, meaning I can reboot and the display works even prior to the OSX loading, in BootCamp, etc. This lends credulence that the DisplayPort monitor will work with any DisplayPort device be it an XBox 360 or your latest cable box, whatever.
With thunderbolt, it seems as though the two end points need to be thunderbolt as they need to negotiate with each other and agree on how to transfer the video stream. This is validated somewhat with my bootcamp partition on my iMac 27" at work. When I boot into bootcamp, I cannot get the iMac27" to work in target display mode via the thunderbolt to thunderbolt with either mini displayport or thunderbolt cables. This is also documented on Apple support. However, Bootcamp does work fine with an iMac27" with Mini displayport and the thunderbolt MacBook via a mini display port cable (not a thunderbolt cable).
So the conclusion I've arrived thus far is the Cinema Display w/ Mini DisplayPort plug is more compatible with Mini Display or ThunderBolt sources (equally) however, it require the use of an additional USB connector to activate the isight camera and usb ports on the back while the Thunderbolt display, nice to have one plug enable all the features such as USB, isight camera, etc. however may not work with external displayport devices without some future adaptor or firmware updates with
With the iMac 27" thunderbolt, the devices need to be synchronized via thunderbolt in order to achieve the target display mode (meaning, they need to be on, macbook needs to be open to use the Command + F2) and there after you can close the MacBook to use the iMac 27" as the monitor.
With the newly released ThunderBolt display, and this is where I'm curious and wish Apple will step in and answer so I can make my purchase decision now, the question is will this display auto-synchronize with thunderbolt source (a requirement for it to work seamlessly when plugged in) and if so, this means their must be some software/hardware running in the monitor to accomplish this. Is this sync still broken when booting to BootCamp?
In other words, will BootCamp work with the thunderbolt display despite it not working with the iMac27" in target display mode?
As a software engineer, I'm inclined to say there are a few possible solutions here:
- firmware option to use thunderbolt port as a mini displayport and operating systems see it as so allowing for interoperability skipping the thunderbolt negotiation step
- bootcamp update allowing Windows to work with thunderbolt port similar to mac, allowing for negotation and the invokation of Command + F2 on iMac 27" and presumably auto negotiation and display iwth the Thunderbolt Display 27"
- some inteligent thunderbolt powered adapter which, when plugged in, tricks any device into seeing a mini displayport monitor and allowing it to function as so be it the iMac 27" in target dispaly mode OR the Thunderbolt display operating simply as a former cinema display. Whoever comes up with this adapter will be a millionair over night.

2nd apple thunderbolt display in not detected by Windows 8.1

Installed Windows 8.1 on a late 2013 Mac Pro. Have two thunderbolt displays. The 2nd display is not being detected by Windows. There is only one display listed in device manager. One display works fine, the river listed for it is Generic PNP display.
Any ideas on getting 2nd display to work in Windows 8.1?

OMG, I was just about to buy a new wireless card because I have the same problem.
Some weeks ago my wireless adapter disappeared, the card disappeared altogether even from Device manager, after I installed a new bluetooth driver and after I was connecting to my phone 3G via USB cable.
But then it came back after I left the laptop shut down and unplugged for a whole night. It worked for a few hours and after closing the lid and opening it again wireless adapter was gone again, never to come back.
I tried changing drivers, holding the power button for 20 sec to hard reset the laptop, fresh install of Windows, load BIOS defaults, and even installing Windows 10 in VHD (dual boot) and see if it will reappear there.
Always the same - the wireless adapter doesn't exist any more.
However, buetooth has been working without problems, which I find strange.
I read online about similar situations, and all answers point that the wireless card stopped working and needs to be replaced.
But @Papelinas - you say you even bought and installed a new wireless card and STILL have the same problem???
I can't believe that something in motherboard got damaged and that only wifi doesn't work...
I've had my Y2P for 6 months, and I don't really have time to send the laptop for repair for some time, I'm using it...
I guess I'll still try to buy a new card, and just hope the wireless adapter will reappear...

Configuring ASUS PB287Q 4K & Thunderbolt Displays

Issue: Configure my MacBook Pro to use a Thunderbolt display and a 4K display via DisplayPort (not HDMI) at 60Hz.
Hardware:
- MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013)
- OS 10.10.1
- 2014 Thunderbolt Display (Firmware v. 26.2)
- 2014 ASUS PB287Q 4K Display
I can successfully configure the system to use the Thunderbolt display as one external monitor and the ASUS as the second via the HDMI port (4K @ 30Hz).
I can successfully configure the system to use "only" the ASUS display via DisplayPort (4K @ 60Hz). (Note: The Thunderbolt is not connected in this configuration)
I cannot get the system to use the Thunderbolt display "and" the ASUS display via DisplayPort connection (needed to use 4K @ 60Hz).
When I attempt to use the ASUS via DisplayPort with the Thunderbolt, the ASUS will not recognize a connection.
Any advise on how to make this configuration work?

I have the ASUS set to DisplayPort Stream 1.2.
I am also using the miniDisplayPort on the MacBook Pro (not the Thunderbolt DisplayPort) to connect the ASUS Display.

They can fix it, but not for free. Macbook repairs supposedly are classified into 3 tiers by an Apple Rep, I for least amount of damage and III for most. I have a dent in the corner of my MBP and it would require new housing to get it fixed. $450 (tier I) or ~half the cost of a Macbook Air on education discount... HA.
If it doesn't affect your everyday computing, I wouldn't worry about it. It's awful, but welcome to the club

New Thunderbolt Displays - shop abroad?

Howdy everyone.
Being a UK customer (and student), buying the new Thunderbolt displays isn't cheap as the price in the UK works out at £899 but with student discount (12%), it works out at roughly £800. However, according to a MacTrust report, the new Thunderbolt displays on the US Apple site are selling for $999, which when converted to pounds works out at £625. Being a lot cheaper, is it worth going to the US Apple site to buy this or are there any differences reguarding sockets/plugs which wouldn't be any use of in the UK? It all sounds viable, but almost too good to be true. Lend me some of your views on this one please!

Currently Apple is not selling a USB-C to Thunderbolt adaptor, they are selling HDMI and VGA adaptors on the website.
You will need to wait until the adaptor is available before you can connect the new MB. Maybe a third party will create the adaptor.
In the meantime I would not buy the new MB

Windows 8.1 for MBP 13" late 2011 BootCamp

Hi guys i have a MBP 13" late 2011 and I am installing windows 8.1 using bootcamp from an usb. I have reached the Install Windows part on EFI device ( the yellow usb). It is the part when i have to choose partition (1-4). Partition 1 is the Macintosh HD and partition 4 is the bootcamp. When i was about to choose the partition 4 it said that it can't be chosen because of windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space because. Can anyone help me? Thank you very much before.

Long story short, if your computer doesn't meet the requirements, it doesn't meet the requirements. There are some Thunderbolt -> PCI X boxes that can run almost any GPU. However, in OS X, a Thunderbolt Aware driver for the graphics card is necessary for these to work. This is a limitation of the OS, not the hardware.
As to what a GPU is, it stands for "Graphics Processing Unit." This is a chip that's designed to manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images. The better the GPU, the higher the FPS/details that can be loaded at once.
tldr;
If your system doesn't meet the requirements due to graphics card limitations, it doesn't meet the requirements. You can't open your MBP up and throw in a new GFx card. If it's RAM limitations, that's fudgeable a little bit. If it's processor (CPU), you're in the same boat as you were with the GFx card.

How to I get Graphic Drivers for Windows 7 using Bootcamp on my Late 2011 17" MacBook Pro?

I just received my new 17" Late 2011 MacBook Pro to replace my older model MBP. I had configured the older MBP with two 500Gb SSD drives by replacing the original hard drive and the DVD with 500Gb SSDs. Works fine. I then simply installed these two SSDs from the older MBP on the new machine. OSX works fine, after a few software updates. Likewise Win 7 Pro is installed on a Boot Camp partition with the drivers from the Mid 2010 MBP. Windows seems to run fine after the expected reactivation, but the graphics are obviously not running at full resolution, I am certain this is due to the differing graphics card between the Mid 2010 MBP and the Late 2011 MBP.
Apple does not show any drivers download for the new MBP, I am running BootCamp software version 4.0.
Although I could certainly do it, I don't want to spend the time to run a new installation of Windows 7 and reinstall all the myriad windows updates. It would take hours.
I know that the new installation process takes a step to download the BootCamp drivers, but how can you reinitiate this process after installing BootCamp as I have without progressing through the whole installation process?
Any help appreciated.....

That's what Apple proposes in here Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows
Personally I would double these amounts and add to that the diskspace needed for your Windows games.
