Late 2011 Optibay HD upgrade (working only in bootcamp)

Hi everybody, i recently upgraded my Macbook pro Late 2011 with an optibay (not the original) and a 1TB 7200 HD.
I followed the instructions and the installation was successfull. But when i turned on my mac the hard drive was not present in finder and if i try to initialize it from disk utility it gives me error and says that disc is not readable. (i've tried that several times even with terminal and different numbers/size of partitions).
I have a bootcamp partition too, with windows 7 installed. Weird fact is that under windows the Optibay drive works like a charm, i can partition it write data and read (Guid/mbr).
My OSX (mavericks) still can't mount/use the drive, even if i formatted it correctly under windows. I was thinking it was a Sata 2-3 issue, and i still can determine for sure if my late 2011 mac supports sata 3 in optibay, even though i think it is just a OSX problem.
Any ideas?
My macbook pro model: Late 2011
cpu: 2,2 GHz Intel Core i7 (quad)
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Optibay HD: hitachi hts721010a9e630

15" late 2011 model with HD display only holds charge for 3hrs... i was expecting 6-7hrs... what do you suggest?

I would suggest you elaborate on what you were doing for those three hours. You can expect 6-7 hours if you want to sit and just watch your desktop. If you want to use your MBP then depending how intensive the processes you are using will determine how fast your battery gets depleted.

  • Macbook Pro 17inch late 2011 keyboard backlight not working

    Recently near the end of sum me 2014 I only noticed the backlight keyboard not working at all. I have done the following to try and rectify;
    1. Reset SMC
    2. Rest NVRAM
    3. Disconnected battery and the above
    4. hardware test online, result showing no issues found.
with all outcomes proving nil. Pressing Fn + F5 or F6 does show the brightness either increasing or decreasing but with no light. I then opened her up and disconnected a cable that was to the LHS of the RAM boards but this only powers the White Sleep LED and not the backlight keyboard on this 17inch model. My next step is to remove the mother board and find the actual cable that does power the backlight LEDs and ensure that it is connected. Similarly around the same time I noticed this with the backlights the fans were running fast. However the weather has gotten cooler and the mbp is not running fans as it was when it was in the warmer months.
Do I have to remove the motherboard and actually make sure that the connector for the backlights hasn't been dislodged?
Anyone out there with a 17inch mbp late 2011 that has had this problem please help.

Thanks Ogelthorpe, I found an excellent video (not in english but it didnt matter) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HNAGodYMNA .
What I found was that the keyboard backlight is intergrated into the black plastic cover that is between the motherboard and the back of the keys/LEDS and its all one piece back to the connector that connects to the motherboard under the LHS fan. I need more details to find out if the LEDS are controlled by a chip or what, but it seems to me that I need to visit an apple store/repairer, however this will be really difficult for me as Im in an isolated location. If there are further tests that I can conduct on my own, I would be grateful. Even if there are tests that Apple themselves conduct to find out what the problem is

  • MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 - Internal Microphone Not Working

Hey everyone, I've been having trouble with my internal microphone on my 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro every so often. In the Sound preferences, Internal Microphone (Built-in) has been selected on the Input tab, the input volume is on full and the audio port has been set to Sound Output so the internal mic is the only input source. However, there is no signal detected by the input level bar. There's also no input on Skype, which is the main thing I use the internal mic for. I do have an external microphone by means of a headset, although I have to set up a small mixer to have a headphone and microphone input and this takes some time, which I do use but sometimes, for convenience, I'd rather just be able to use the internal mic and use some headphones in the built-in output.
I can't figure out why it doesn't seem to activate, usually a restart activates the mic but I haven't had much success doing this today, and really, the mic shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
If anyone can shed some light onto this, please do!
    Thanks in advance,
    LiamWatson28.

You may try a PRAM reset.  If that does not resolve the issue, make an appointment at the Apple store Genius bar.
    Ciao.

  • MBP Late 2011 i7 2760qm under W7 only 2 Cores/4Threads

    Hi !
I´ve installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my MacBook Pro Late 2011 (Intel i7 2760qm).
Under OSX 10.8.2 i have all 4 Cores/8 Threads, but under Windows i have only 2 Cores/4 Threads (Data from CPU-Z and Task Manager) and it seems to be limited to 2,4 GhZ (no Turboboost under Load).
Why is this? Have i done anything wrong with the installation?
Is the CPU limited under Windows?
    Regards
    MRR81

would make sure to make the hardware driver disc in bootcamp in osx and install the apple windows drivers
my imac have 4 cores and with hyperthreading 8 in windows 8 and windows 7 before that
after I install the apple drivers

  • MacBook Pro Late 2011 Model - Does not work after Yosemite update

i recently updated my OS to Yosemite and had in problems for two days but yesterday it ceased to work in the middle of printing a document.
I need my laptop back up and running since I have school exams soon and vital information and files are in this laptop.
i Have never had a problem with the laptop before.
    Issues that I have had
logging in takes at least 20 minutes
cannot progress further than that, desktop is blank and nothing loads, only the dock.
    battery drains extremely fast
Safe boot does not even load
I've tried clearing that VRAM and the other one.
    Cannot access anything at all
This is appalling and at the worst possible time.

Please describe exactly what you're doing and what happens.

  • I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro with 10.7..5 what is the next upgrade for this?

MacBook Pro 10.7. 5 late 2011 next upgrade

Another upgrade which may come first if not already, is to RAM with an increase in total capacity.
Maximum Memory    16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

An example of reputable upgrade RAM source of matching spec to Late 2011 MacBook Pro:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM
Given Mavericks OS X 10.9.5 is said to no longer be available, you may wish to try your luck first
with Mountain Lion 10.8.5 just in case your older computer does not like Yosemite 10.10.1. From
what I understand, you'd likely pay a fee to get & use Mt Lion. That may be worth it, if the unit
does not prefer Yosemite; and it may be difficult to revert to an older one after installing 10.10.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Gaming Performance Increase from Late 2011 MBP to 11 or 13 MBA 2013?

I have a Late 2011 MBP 13,upgraded with 256 GB SSD and 6 GB RAM.
    I play mostly CS:S, SC2, WoW, D3 and that's about it.
I would like to be able to move into SimCity (After Aug 29 Launch Obviously), and perhaps DCUO and The Old Republic (VIA BootCamp)
Would I see a nice jump with the haswell chips in the MBA 2013 model?
If so I might jump, if not I am ok here right now, running wow at low with 30+ FPS.
Just curious, thanks for the advice!

The Late 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro has got an Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU, and the Mid 2013 13-inch MacBook Air has got an Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU.
The MacBook Air will work better with graphic tasks, but both of them are not ready for heavy use.
If you want to play games like those ones, the best thing you can do is to get a 15-inch MacBook Pro, which includes a quad-core processor and a NVIDIA GPU which will work correctly. The difference will be very big compared to the Mid 2013 MacBook Air.
Also, the MacBook Air is not ready for games. It overheats quickly, and high temperatures damage it. If you get the MacBook Air, don't set high values in games, and make sure that the games you want to play support integrated graphic cards

  • Which cable will allow me to connect my late 2011 Mac Pro to my LCD tv?

What cable should I buy so I can see my computer screen on my tv?

I bought this Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HMDI adapter from Monoprice - less than $7. You'll need to buy a HDMI cable of the right length - I also bought a high-quality HDMI 15" cable from Monoprice.
I, too have a late 2011 model. It works great - I just don't use it any longer since I bought a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display.
    Good luck,

I don't see any DDR3L on the page for the RAM that would fit your model -> http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM.
But the answer is that it doesn't really matter - just make certain to get 1333MHz.

  • [solved] Optibay SSD/HDD error with SATA2/3 drive in late 2011 model

    Hi,
I'd like to post just in case someone else stumbles over this problem: I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro. Some of them are equipped with DVD drives (or rather connectors) that allow 6GB/s (SATA III), others only allow 3GB/s (SATA II). I happen to have one of the SATA III models (check About this Mac > More information > System report > SATA; in my case it says "link speed: 6GB/s").
When I upgraded my system drive to SSD I chose to go the optibay route - taking out the DVD drive and replacing it with a caddy so I can use my old HDD in it. Unfortunately afterwards I couldn't write or do anything with the HDD. I just got a Finder error -50. I tried formatting but that didn't work and messed up the whole situation. When I tried to delete the partion with disk utility I got an error "Partition failed with error. Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed." (for German users, so Google's their friend as well: Auf Deutsch heißt diese Fehlermeldung im Festplattendienstprogramm "Das Entfernen der Volumendaten zum Verhindern zukünftiger unbeabsichtigter Überprüfungen ist fehlgeschlagen").
Changing positions of HDD and SSD appearently is a bad idea because people got beachballs and freezes and all kinds of things. I finally resolved my problem by buying another caddy (=optibay) that was specifically only for SATA 2 (although my system report tells me I could use SATA 3...); in contrast my old caddy was for SATA 3. Voilà, the error is gone and I can write on the HDD just fine again.
    I hope this helps anyone.

For solution please read my full question.
