Late 2012 Mini and Trackpad Issue

I recently replaced my Mac Pro (1,1) with a mini. The boot drive is an SSD and I have four external drives (3TB each) using USB 3 (for 3 of them, one through a USB 3 hub) and Firewire for one (the time machine drive). It's working great. However...the Apple Trackpad, every now and then, seems to skip around...rather than a fluid movement, it gets a bitter jittery. If I turn the trackpad off and back on again, it's fine for awhile Any thoughts?

Have the trackpad here with a 2011 mini -- no issues as you describe. You might also consider removing the trackpad from Bluetooth preferences, cycle power on the trackpad, and add it back to Bluetooth preferences. I have also found that the lower the battery level on BT devices, the less responsive they become. I also use the Apple BT mouse.

Thanks for the responses. I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini. 2 is not enough. 8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed. It seems that I am incorrect.

Can I swap memory from a late 2012 mini to a late 2010 mini

I just upgraded the memory on my late 2012 mini. I'm wondering if I can swap this memory into my late 2010 mini. They are both DDR 3 204 pins.

As you can see, the Late 2012 Mac mini uses PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz RAM, and the Mid 2010 Mac mini uses PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz RAM, so the Mid 2010 Mac mini can't use the memory of your Late 2012 Mac mini because it isn't compatible with 1600 MHz RAM. If you try to install it, the Mac mini won't boot.

Late 2012 Mini won't boot from ext HDD with 10.8

Having just replaced an early 2009 Mini with a later 2012 mini, I tried booting off an external HDD that is a backup with Mountain Lion 10.8 as the OS. I selected it to be the boot drive after holding down the option key, but the boot process never went beyond the white screen/Apple logo, even after waiting for minutes.
The external drive is in a Newer 3.5" enclosure with a FW800 port connected to the Mini via a FW800 cable. After booting from the internal drive I can view and change items in the 10.8 external drive. This drive previously booted fine from my old Mini.

The problem is the version on the external drive, if created
on the old Mini (infered from ""This drive previously booted
fine from my old Mini.") won't boot on the new Mini because
it lacks drivers that are not available on the general Mountain Lion
updates. Since the new Mini came out after 10.8.2, only the
version on it contains the proper drivers. Also, if the version
on the external drive is earlier than 10.8.2, it will never boot
as no Mac can boot to an OS older than it was shipped with.
Whenever 10.8.3 comes out, it will likely sync all current models again.

Need aftermarket ram specs for late 2012 mini

Late 2012 Mini 2.3 I7 Quad/4GB and need to upgrade to 16GB.
I used the specs from the "About my Mac" window and received ram that would fit in my Mac Pro?
Any help here?

- Currently if I boot it up there is a flashing folder icon with a question mark in it. I am assuming this means there is no OS because I wiped the SSD and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion
- When I hold Command+R, it prompts me to Choose Network... the problem with this is the wifi constantly is disconnecting. The Retina 2012 does not have an ethernet port so i have considered buying the attachment then returning when done.

There is nothing to do if you don't have a reliable Internet connection unless you have a copy of the Mountain Lion installer application from when you first installed it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I have a Mac Mini late 2012 version and i am trying to reset to factory setting.

Hello, I had a bought a Mac Mini late 2012 version a couple months ago, and after i tried to install "pro tool" on my Mac, and FAILED. my Garage band wouldn't open anymore. it only tells me "garage band quit unexpectedly" when i open it. I tried uninstalled it and reinstall it again, but it still won't work.
So now, I want to jus5 restore the whole Mac mini to factory setting and erase everything in it.
I had read some of the threads in the community, and the Mac mini late 2012 doesn't come with an OS disk.
Therefore, is there anyone can tell me how i would be able to rest the Mac Mini later 2012 version back to factory setting and erase everything in it?

Getting mail on phone and iPad but not late 2012 Mini. Help!

I have 2 mail accounts set up - iCloud and Yahoo,
Late 2102 Mini running Mavericks 10.9.5.
The iCloud mail comes to the phone, iPad and computer, but the Yahoo mail only reaches the phone and iPad.
This just started today, both accounts have been running flawlessly for almost 2 years now.
Nothing I have tried so far has worked. I am hoping that someone can provide a solution.

Bootcamp will not install on my late 2012 mini Samsung EVO 840 1tb SSD

I recently replaced my 256gb OWC SSD in my late 2012 Mac Mini with a Samsung EVO 840 1tb.
I did the following
1) Using 10.9 recovery i initialized and created a single clean partition on the 1Tb SSD
2) I installed a clean copy of 10.9
3) Using migration assistant i transferred apps and documents from my previous SSD via a USB 3.0 adapter to the new SSD
4) Using Bootcamp Assistant 5 I created an ISO version of a clean copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and downloaded the Apple updated Boot Camp drivers to the same 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive
5) Using Bootcamp Assistant created a 199gb Bootcamp partition on the new Samsung SSD which appeared to go to completion
6) Mini restarted from the Bootcamp USB drive and Windows started successfully
7) I chose Windows 7 Home Premium install
8) I got the "which partition do you want to use to install Windows" screen, chose the Bootcamp partition, using the advanced option I chose format which appeared to complete, hit NEXT and then got an error that windows could not install because it could not find the NTFS partition, and then i was stuck.
When I rebooted I first got the Unable to find a bootable disk, hit any key error. I then physically shut down the computer, held down the alt key chose the Mac partition and the computer successfully booted. I could see the Bootcamp partition and according to Disk Utilities, the partition was formatted as NTFS.
The only connections to the Mini were a 30" Apple Cinema via a Apple Mini display connector, the keyboard and mouse via USB, and the USB Bootcamp Created 16gb Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 thumb drive. I also have an internal Apple 1 tb hard drive with no applications installed. In the apps installed on the Samsung does include Parallels 9.
What have i done wrong or missed? IF nothing it appears that the Bootcamp assistant supplied with 10.9 may have an issue with my Hardware setup including the Samsung EVO840 1tb drive.

There are known SATA speed issues with Macs and EVO 1TB. Please check in System Profiler -> SATA for SATA status of the EVO. It seems to work on OSX side, but not Bootcamp/Windows.
Please check for any firmware updates for the EVO on the Samsung website.

IMac 27" (Late 2012) Freezing and Crashing

I purchased an ex-demo iMac 27" (Late 2012 - 3.4Ghz, 3TB Fusion Drive, Nvidia 680MX 2GB) that was upgraded to 32GB Ram last July.
Since I've recieved it it has intemittantly locked up, occasionally you get the your computers been restarted screen but mostly it just freezes completely. There's no pattern it can be at the login screen, on the desktop with no software running or when any software I use. There's no particular thing that seems to cause it.
I have run the Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode Multiple Times and it reports no issues. I've run MemTest Continuosly for 24 hours and it reports no issue.
I've done clean installs of OSX multiple times (both Mavericks and Mountain Lion) and its had no effect. Even with a barebones OSX install it still freezes so I've ruled out software.
I've switched the RAM to rule out memory - still freezes.
I've used both WiFi and and Ethernet to rule out network - still freezes.
I've removed the Fusion Drive Logical Volume and installed OSX to the SSD and then to the HDD to rule out hard disks. This included zeroing the hard drive to ensure there was no bad sectors etc. This didn't make any difference.
I contacted Apple who told me to take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. I took it in to my local AASP they've told me they can't find anything wrong - everything works fine for them.
I'm wondering whether the issues are environmental. I've seen a few reports that "Dirty Power" can cause issues, has anyone had any similar experiences that have been solved by a UPS?
Failing that I'm at a loss at what to do. The iMac is unusable as it freezes every few hours.
Anyone have any ideas of what else I could try?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Mid 2007 to Late 2012 Mini Migration

I'm replacing a Mid '07 Mini running 10.7.5 w/ a new Late '12 mini due to frequent lockups (Beachballs), Aperture is really painful but not the only app. w/ performance issues. I was planning on using Setup Assistant after connecting the two by Firewire. Is this a good way to go, will problems from the 5 year Mini's OS move to the new Mini? Would I be better off going w/ a fresh install, and reinstalling the Apps? Ugh!

You can still use Setup Assistant to transfer your data from the Mac mini, but I recommend you not to transfer apps in order to avoid performance problems. You can restore your user's files without any problem. Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html
After restoring your user's files, reinstall each app manually. Doing this, you won't transfer some files that you didn't need from the Mac mini and you will get a cleaner installation with a better performance.

IPad Mini and Exchange Issues Using Google 2-step Verification

I cannot get my gmail email, contacts, or calendar to sync with my iPad Mini, and nothing seems to work. I've set it up with Microsoft exchange using all the proper settings of m.google.com and the app specific password from my account, but to no avail. I've tried regenerating various app specific passwords, nothing worked. I've tried updating to the latest software, but still didn't work. I've even tried wiping my iPad to restore its factory settings, but no luck at all. Any other ideas out there?

Macbook 3,1. Clean install of Lion. Two days later my keyboard and trackpad aren't responding.

Left my computer for a couple minutes. Came back. Tried to move my mouse. Wouldn't move. Tried to Command-Tab to a different program. Keyboard wouldn't type. Plugged in my USB mouse and restarted. Got to the login screen and couldn't type in my password because the keyboard, along with the trackpad, still wasn't working. Tried powering down and removing the battery. Nothing.
So I scheduled a Genius Bar appointment. But is anyone else having similar issues with Lion upgrades killing their keyboard and trackpad?

So it happens constantly, but shutting down my machine, unplugging the power cable, removing the battery, and hitting the power button/holding it down to reset the SMC works every time. Anyone know what this means?

Mid-2007 Mac mini and HDMI issues

I have a Mid-2007 Mac Mini with OS X 10.7.3, that, most of the time, will work fine with a DVI->HDMI cable and either of 2 HDMI ports on the TV. The Mini recognizes the display correctly (a Vizio E371VL). The display's native res. is 1080p at 60hz, and the Mini is set to that and looks great. I can switch to lower resolutions and even restart the mini and have the Vizio look and behave correctly.
However, I have an Apple TV (current generation - black brick) hooked up to the other HDMI port on the Vizio. It also looks and acts great.
The problem is when I switch between the inputs on the TV. If I go to the Apple TV (which will be working fine) and then back to the other HDMI input, the Mac mini shows black. The TV does not say "no signal" or indicate any problem. No amount of zapping PRAM, ressetting the SMC or basic restarting helps. In fact, the TV still registers a signal at 1080p. Using Apple Remote Desktop from another Mac (a 2006 Macbook Pro with DVI) shows the Mini is still functioning and still correctly displays the Vizio model and 1080p @ 60hz resolution.
The kicker here is that I can physically disconnect the DVI/HDMI cable from the Mac mini and connect it to the Macbook Pro. The video from the Macbook will pop up immediately. I can switch between the Macbook and Apple TV all day long, switch resolutions, etc. No problem.
Even more bizarre is that this has the effect of "resetting" the Mac mini. If I plug the DVI connector back into the Mini, its video will pop back up. It will work fine as above until the HDMI input is changed again.
Vizio tech support acted as if they'd never heard of Apple, Inc. Useless.
Super frustrating problem.

I went with my gut and got an LG 47LM4600 TV with VGA input in addition to HDMI (seems there are not many--if any--TVs sold with DVI inputs anymore). The 2007 Mac mini is plugged in using my old DVI cable with VGA adaptor. I tested it using the DVI cable with HDMI adaptor, and there was no sound.
I can confirm the same condition that you originally described when I try to switch to the Mac mini on the PC input. The screen is black except for a color bar that flashes on briefly every 2-3 seconds at the bottom of the screen. No amount of switching from one input to the other will make the display come back. The only way I've found to fix it is to unplug the cable from either the TV or the computer and plug it back in.
The annoyance with this is ameliorated by the fact that we'll be using a new Apple TV to watch Netflix from now on, instead of using a Web browser on the mini. Will only have to worry about it when watching DVDs.

IMac 27" late 2012 3tb Yosemite BOOTCAMP ISSUES

Hi,
As said in the title, I have a 27" iMac late 2012 with 3tb worth of storage... It is currently running the latest version of Yosemite.
I have been trying to run bootcamp on the iMac for windows 8, however it is not allowing me to install windows...
It Is coming up with an error saying it is unable to partition the hard drive...
I Have tried to create the Partition via disk utility yet still am not able to perforn what I need it to do...
i Would really appreciate any help or ways to run bootcamp...

Drive Genius will report bad blocks when none are present. It may even be responsible for disk corruption.

Get rid of Drive Genius. Do not install such junk on a Mac.
