Late 2013 15 inch Refurb Macbook Pro CPU Temperature

Hi All,
Three days ago, I bought a refurb 15 inch Macbook Pro from apple online store. Since day 1 CPU temperature are extremely high. I have seen my Mac hitting 99 degree Celsius. This temperature was attained while I was just browsing internet on chrome and simultaneously transferring my photos from my external drive to iphoto. Also, just watching videos on youtube kicks the temperature to 75-80 degree Celsius. Idle temperature are somewhere around 45-50 degree Celsius. I don't know if this is normal and if such high temperature affects the life span of my mac. I got it checked at an apple store and their diagnostic test for cooling system found no issues. I don't know if I should return this and just buy a new one. My Mac configuration is-

use safari, its much better than chrome.
Safari uses way less resources than chrome (RAM, CPU power and battery)
if the problem continues, contact apple support

Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro using Bootcamp? Before today, I would have never even asked this question due to the large number of users who continue to use Windows 7 in the PC world! However, there seems to be two conflicting links on the Apple site.

From the first link, there is a statement as follows: Mac Pro (Late 2013) only supports Windows 8 (64-bit).
From the second link, the table (under MacBook Pro) clearly states that the Retina, 13 inch, late 2013 edition supports BOTH Windows 8 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.
So the above information is conflicting; and as a result, I am confused! Thanks for any responses.

As far as I am aware your computer supports Win 7 and Win 8 - 64-bit.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
   1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7
         or Windows 8. For Boot Camp 4.0 and above you can only use
         Windows 7 or later. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
         installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
         installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the
         computer into OS X or Windows.

I'm using macbook pro retina 13inch 2013 late version.
my macbook has NO external graphic card, just iris graphic.
when i was playing diablo3 or watching movie by using bypass ip address, my cpu temperature was maintained 90~100 celcius degrees.
And at the same time, my cooling fan was maintained 5800~6000 rpm.
There are two questions.
One, is my macbook temperature too high or normal level ?
Two, i know that 6200rpm is maximum speed of cooling fan. Why did fan run 5800~6000rpm, not maximum?

Late 2013 15" Retina Macbook Pro - wifi connection timeout with one router

Hi,
I've recently purchased a new Macbook Pro retina 15 inch late 2013 model. Everything is fine at home, but at work I cannot connect to one wireless router (Netgear WAG102). The computer tries to connect but I get a connection timeout error after a few seconds for every attempt.
I have tried every suggestion for wifi issues that I can find on the forums, and have reset the router.
A colleague has also recently purchased the same computer except 13 inch model - he has exactly the same problem.
Any suggestions? I suspect given that two of us have the same problem that there is an incompatibility with the MBP and this particular router. I notice that there are quite a few discussions about similar issues with the macbook pro.

I too have a MBP Retina, 15", late 2013, and am having wifi connection issues. I've tried several fixes suggested on these discussions and by Apple. Nothing corrects the problem. I've been told it's my router, but I find that difficult to believe give that my wife has a MBP 13" 2012 (non retina), that has no issues at all, nor do our iPhones. It's just my MBP Retina.
My issue seems to be when waking from sleep, I lose the wifi connection. I have to turn wifi of then on again, and it reconnects. The only thing that corrects the problem for me is when I disable bluetooth. I have the magic mouse and it's basically useless becuase I need bluetooth on for it to work.
I find this to be an annoying problem. This is my first MacBook, and I really like it, but this wifi thing is bad. Never had this problem with my Windows machines.

MacBook Pro CPU Temperature Issue

My MacBook Pro is becoming excessively hot, even with light usage. Currently, I have Google Chrome, Sublime Text 3, MAMP and Mail open. Google Chrome (36.0.1985.125) is the only app that is capably of heavy CPU (and MAMP, but I'm not developing any intensive scripts at this time), however I only have one or two tabs open. And neither one of them are intensive websites. Usually just PHP docs, and localhost. The average CPU activity is 1.4% System, and 2% User (it sometimes peaks to 2% System, and 5-6% User, but nothing massive).
Right now, the temperatures are averaging at 85C (and yes, that is degrees celsius). It regularly exceeds 90, and sometimes reaches just over 100C or so when just on YouTube or Facebook. I'm not sure if this is maybe related to an inaccuracy in the temperature monitor, but I use this to get the measurements. The MacBook Pro's casing does feel hot, almost painful at times when I touch the aluminium area just beyond the keyboard and below the screen for a few seconds.
The current environmental conditions for the MacBook Pro are:
- flat wooden surface (desk) to sit on
- 18C ambient room temperature
The MacBook Pro is a 15" Early 2013 with an i7 Quad-core, 8GB RAM, 1GB NVIDIA GT 650M (MacBookPro10,1) running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4.
Here's what I'd like to know:
- Is this normal?
- Would if help if I removed the cover and removed any dust (if any)?
- Do I need to take it to a repair shop?

Make an appointment with the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store. Have them check your machine. Back up what you want to keep/restore before you go.
You can try another monitor solution that will tell your CPU temp, fan speed, and battery information. It is iStats, a Ruby gem that has been posted a few times in the community. The following image is from a just-powered on 2014 MBA. In the following, if you use Ruby Version Manager, the sudo is unnecessary. It may complain slightly, but does install correctly, as it works fine on my 10.9.4 machine.

How much does it cost to replace the late 2013 model Retina Macbook Pro battery?

I just bought my first Mac computer ever and I'm loving it -- and the battery life is phenomenal. I'm just worried that in a year it'll be half of what it is now which would not be unlike any other non-Mac laptop, but I really like the battery life this Mac gives.
So I'm wondering, at that point, how much would it cost to have the battery replaced? Does AppleCare include a battery replacement? I know that it's not exactly something I want to replace myself, so how much would it cost to have the Apple Store replace it, if not?

Thanks for the response. I'm worried partially about voiding the warranty if I remove it, and iFixIt's teardown of the latest 2013 Retina model suggests that it may be quite difficult to do without breaking other components...

Then you might check at any of the other university book stores or software stores or any computer store in town for the 64-bit version.
If you want to use the 32-bit version from the school (you probably get it for free or very cheap) then you could purchase Parallels and run it as a virtual machine concurrently with OS X. There are some caveats:
1. You have to purchase Parallels (there may be an academic discount.) List is $79.95.
2. Your computer needs minimally 4 GBs of RAM, but realistically 8 GBs would be better.
3. Parallels creates a pseudo-drive on your hard drive. It could easily require 50 GBs of disk space.
Accommodating these might be more costly than buying 64-bit Windows 7. And, if you look online you may find them with an academic discount (or may be able to order it through the school.)

Purchasing iLife 11 on disk is an easy thing to do. ILife 11 will include iDVD.
If you have iDVD on another Macintosh you can transfer it to your new computer. That procedure has been discussed here many times, if you do a search you will find that procedure.

15 inch Retina Macbook Pro making an annoying whining sound

My 15 inch Retina Macbook Pro suddenly began making a loud whining sound. I have been working her hard recently, but even when I let her rest the sound continues. It seems to be coming from the upper left conner of the machine near the W key. Any suggestions how, or if, I can fix this?

I got since yesterday my new refurb macbook pro 15'', intel core i5 - what a machine, like new/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
but i still have to get used to it.... the new system...
anyway, maybe a bit of a silly question - i set it up (not transferred details yet from my imac) and connected to the internet, all is fine of course but i was wondering - now the silly sounding part
where is the HD???
should that not be on my desktop? or do i transfer that from my imac?

I will assume that you've previously had desktop computers. The HD is inside the computer along with everything else.
If you bought your refurb from the Apple on-line website, your computer should have come with instruction manuals. If you bought it through another source, you ought to try to get back to that source and ask for the manuals. Those manuals will tell you everything you need to know about the hardware. In addition, on the apple.com website there are tutorials to help you get started.

Late 2012, 13'' Retina MacBook Pro, Display bug

Hello, I am having a late 2012, 13'' Retina MacBook Pro(i7, 8Gb). Last year I upgraded to Mavericks. Immediately after upgrading I notice that my MacBook is bit slow. I always keep my OS X up-to-date. Last month I noticed something really strange.
1. Whenever I manually put my MacBook to sleep by clicking sleep command under the apple logo (top left hand corner of the screen) then the way the display turns off is not normal. I mean its not smooth as it was earlier. I have compared this with the new hardwares (MacBook Pro's) in the apple store.
2. After I put my notebook to sleep, when I try to wake it up within 5-10/15 mins, the screen flashes very quickly before entering password.
These issues are bugging me a lot. I also have apple care. I called senior adviser and described the issue. I got scared when he mentioned that there might be some issue with my logic board/graphic card.
I also performed Apple Hardware Test by myself and also booked an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar guys but everything came up normal.
Is there any particular test I need to mention to the Genius bar guys to test with there unique hardware checking tool?
Note: I did clean install of OS X couple of times, also did SMC reset & PRAM reset.
Recently I updated with latest OS X update 10.9.4 hoping that this issue will resolve but no luck.
I am wondering whether any of you guys have experienced similar issue or I am the only one. Is it something I should worry about because I still have apple care and if it requires major hardware change then I can easy get it done without paying any $$$$. I know logic boards are pretty expensive.

The screen glitches that have been most likely when upgrading to 10.9.3 are quick, brief flashes of yellow, pink, etc., light on screens immediately before login. It doesn't sound as if you're having that problem.
If QuickTime won't record the glitches, then it's unlikely to be a problem with your GPU - most likely a screen glitch (if that) or a OS X glitch, nothing related to Flash Player.
However, if I were you, I would take the machine into your local Apple Store and have the techs run some tests. They may want to install OS X anew, so I would make certain that you have a backup before taking your machine into the techs.

MacBook Pro 13" (Late 2013) or Refurb Pro 15" (Early 2013)

Hello guys/girls,
I'm currently studying applied informatics and I need a new laptop for the daily university life.
I came to buy a macbook because of various reasons (Battery life, speed, durability, ..) but I'm still not sure which one I should buy.
I decided to buy a new 13" MacBook Pro Retina with 16GB of RAM, 2.4GHz i5 CPU and a 256GB Flash-Storage but the local refurbished store (Germany) has been updated and a 15" MacBook Pro Retina with 2.4GHz i7 QuadCore CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB Flash-Storage has been added. Now I don't know what to buy. Either spent ~100€ more for the 15" refurb. Version or buy the new 13" MBPr.
I'll need to run atleat one IDE for Java, Visual Studio (so I need to start a Windows VM) and maybe more later.
Pros of the 13":
+ Smaller and easier to carry around
+ Better battery life
+ Faster SSD
+ New SSD (? I'm not sure if the one in the refurbed is changed to a new one, since all SSDs have limited write sequences)
+ A bit cheaper
+ More RAM (16GB)
Pros of the 15" Refurb:
+ Faster when it comes to CPU (i7 QuadCore)
+ Faster when it comes to GPU (GT650M)
+ Bigger Display
+ Maybe longer usable (Should be atleast 4-6 years!!)

Macbook Pro CPU Core's temperature measurments

I have a late 2011 15-inch Macbook Pro OS X 10.8.4 with BootCamp installed.
In OS X environment, the CPU core temperatures are around 40 - 44C, while in idle or with a minimum Safari browsing the net.
When in Bootcamp with Windows 7 Professional, in the similar operating/application condition, but the my Macbook's CPU Core Temperatures are always about 52 - 55C (10 degrees higher than in OS X).
While doing heavy stuffs such as Virus Scan, Time Machine, Data Backup, Video Editing etc ... on both environments the CPU core temperatures could go up to upper 80's degree C.
Is it normal ? if so, is there any explanation for 10 degrees warmer while in BootCamp/Windows ?

2007 MacBook Pro CPU exceeds 200° F

I've been searching for average running temperatures for MacBook Pros and can't seem to find the consensus. My late 2007 MBP regularly runs into the high 100°'s F (monitored my iStat) and the hottest component is always my GPU or CPU. The GPU will regularly reach 185° F+ while the CPU will hit over 200° F+ (the hottest I have caught it at is 211° F). This is with a fan control running - without it the computer would shut down daily.
I have yet to have someone take this matter seriously - are these normal running temperatures?
By no means am I pushing the computer - generally Safari will be opened to check RSS feeds then quit out of. Mail will be running in the background and possibly VLC for music and Preview for painting references. My computer is on an elevated vented stand in a rather cool (72° F) room while I work.
Is there something I can do to keep it cooler? Is this a hardware issue? I have already had one battery blow - possibly heat related?

I get nervous on my Late 2007 MBP when temp pass 170F, but that only happens if I test some game demo that's demands a lot from the system. Mine (running 10.6.4) idles at around 110 to 12oF and seldom exceed 140-150F doing routine stuff like word processing or browsing. The computer is supposed to do a safety shutdown at around 100C/212F so you are really close to the line.
If System Profiler (in Applications > Utilities) shows "Model Identifier" as "MacBookPro3,1" or MacBookPro4,1" you have the sometimes flaky NVIDEA 8600M GT graphics chipset that can fail in high heat conditions, so it behooves you to get control of the temps.
There are two areas to help you get temps under control:
1) Physical Arrangement: Don't use the computer in your lap or one a blanket, pillow or other surface that covers the case bottom. The case is a part of the heat dissipation system and air must get under the computer. The hinge area in the back also lets out some heat so it needs to be unobstructed.
If you use an external monitor, leave the built-in display open. A lot of heat escapes through the keyboard.
Those computer pads with fans help, but are not a complete cure-all.
2) Software issues: Sometimes a "runaway" background process can eat up enough processor cycles to run up the temps. I had this happen after running a game demo that caused the MBP to write to its system.log file continually and overheat.
Find Activity Monitor ("AM" hereafter) in your Utilities folder. Before launching it, quit all user applications but do not restart the computer. Now launch AM. If you've not used it before, its "Show" option in the upper part of the window will be at the default of "My Processes." Change that to "All Processes from the pull down menu in that option.
Now click the column in AM titled "%CPU" to sort everything by processor demands. Then watch what "bubbles" to the top of the list for a minute or two. Other than AM itself, no process should be using more than about 5% of the CPU cycles.
If something is using a lot or the processor, write it down and post it as a replay to your own thread and we can see how to tame it.
