Late 2013 15" rMBP fan noise even on 2D games

Hello,
I have the latest model Apple Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. I'm using the basic model with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, Haswell i7 cpu with integraded Intel Iris Pro 1gb gpu.
The problem is about the fans. I have never played a game on my mac before two months ago. Since then, when I play the fans get noisy and in a few minutes they start to spin at max rpm about 6000.
I have talked to Apple Customer service and they made me do it sth. like SMC, PRAM etc. However, it didn't fix anything, then I handle my mac to the nearest Apple Store.
They cleaned it and checked the system, according to their said the system works fine. I got it back today and whenever I came, I tried and it happened again.
Just for an instance, I launched "Bridge Constructer Free" game and wait for about 3 minutes. After all, the fans were spinning at over 6000 rpm but meanwhile the system was not hot, it was a bit cool, just about 45 celcius degree.
On the other tasks, like web surfing, playing a full HD video or daily things, it works perfect. I've never heard the fan noise and feel the heat. Otherwise, on nearly every game I played, it happened. Although the system is under 50 celcius degree, the fans used to spin at max rpm.
Also we tried the same thing but it didn't happen on my friend's late 2013 13" rMBP.
This thing really irritates me because it leds to a such noise. Without taking earphones on, I am not able to use the mac comfortably.
Can you help me to solve this issue please?
I'm adding a screenshot below to see the values;

I am not sure of the thermal limit for the haswell processors, but for Intel's previous generation processors installed in the rMBP lineup, the thermal limit was 100C (212F). Extended exposure to temperatures exceeding this could damage the CPU. What software are you using to manually control the fans? I wouldn't recommend manually controlling the fans. Let the internal heat sensors do their thing. Your rMBP will shutdown if the processor reaches dangerous temperatures for extended periods of time. I wouldn't say that this behavior is abnormal given the amount of heat your GPU generates when rendering graphics intensive games. Just make sure to keep the fan vent unobstructed at all times and a cooling pad never hurts.
Uninstall the software you are using to manually control the fans, reset the SMC, test and see if temperatures fall:

  • Late 2013 13'' rMBP 4k 60Hz capability

I've been following threads regarding late 2013 (Haswell) rMBP's 4k @60Hz capability. The discussions on those threads have been predominantly revolving around high-end 15'' rMBP equipped with Nvidia 750M gpu because mostly owners of this specific rMBP have been inquiring this capability and only these people seem to own 4k 60Hz monitors-- this is quite natural given the exorbitant price of 4k monitors and considering that these people are after the utmost performance. The thing is, 4k displays will eventually become cheaper and people who are considering buying a Haswell rMBP without a discrete gpu might at least want to know if these rMBPs are future proof in terms of this capability.
As far as I've been following the discussions, the current status of the highest-end Haswell rMBP and accordingly my questions pertaining to lower-end Haswell rMBPs are as follows:
    1) Status:Owners of Haswell 15'' rMBP with Nvidia 750M gpu and 4k 60Hz monitors confirm that they can output 4k @ 60Hz via Windows with their computers on these monitors. So far no one has confirmed if Haswell 13'' rMBPs equipped with Iris (and Haswell 15'' rMBPs with Iris Pro for that matter) has can output 4k @ 60Hz. It might be that these people don't have such a monitor.
Question: Please kindly confirm if you can get 4k@60Hz via Windows if you have a Haswell rMBP without discrete gpu and a 4k 60Hz monitor.
    2) Status: Owners of Haswell 15'' rMBP with Nvidia 750M gpu and 4k 60Hz monitors have started to confirm that they can output 4k @ 60Hz via Mavericks with their computers on these monitors since the release of 10.9.3 beta 13D12 build. Moreover they are confirming that the experience has got even smoother with the 13D17 build of the beta. With the final release of 10.9.3 owners of this rMBP will likely get an immecapble 4k 60Hz experience.
Question: Please kindly confirm if you can get 4k@60Hz via Mavericks 10.9.3 beta build 13D17 if you have a Haswell rMBP without discrete gpu and a 4k 60Hz monitor.
PS. It is contentious whether Iris and Iris Pro are capable of outputting 4k at the 60Hz refresh rate, despite Haswell 13'' and low-end 15'' rMBPs are equipped with TB2 which is in theory capable of 4k @ 60Hz. Despite this, there seems to be conflicting Intel documentation in this regard. Therefore, at this point, not a document, but a confirmation would be much more reliable.
PS2. If the answer to question 1 is positive but negative to question 2, in my opinion this would still be very important because this will prove that Haswell rMBPs without discrete gpus are capable of 4k @ 60Hz, and that if this is possible with Windows, there is no reason it would not be on Mavericks in the future.

  • Late 2013 13" rMBP not starting up/black screen

    Hi there,
so my brother's late 2013 13" rMBP does not power up properly. It is the top of the line model with the Core i7-4558U, 16GB of RAM, etc...
Pressing the power button leaves the screen powered off, and the fan possibly running, which is difficult to hear as it is so quiet... It is not a display issue tho, as it did work once and displayed the Apple and boot progress (Yosemite), but froze afterwards.
I've tried an SMC reset as explained on Apple Knowledgebase pages. That did work as expected, but the situation did not change. Others have suggested removing/disconnection the battery (which is not possible on this machine, i.e. I don't want to do it myself warranty wise).
Do you have any other suggestions?

Your best option is to make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free and then you will be in a position to make an informed decision.
If the MBP is still under warranty, it will be fixed for free.
    Ciao.

  • WiFi slower on late 2013 15" rMBP

So yesterday compared SpeedTest.net between my late 2013 15" rMBP and a mid 2012 15" MBP and the new machine is about 50% slower.  The WiFi is a Cisco Meraki AP's (2x).  Both machines were under two feet apart.
Then last night at home compared the new 15" against one of old 17" MBP's (2012??) and on fibre broadband with the latest Apple Airport Extreme base station and again the new machine was at least 50% slower, testing this time on testmy.net as recommended by an Apple Support engineer, after also flushing DNS as also recommended.  And at home, I was the only person on the WiFi at the time.
Have got a Genius Bar appointment later next week, but was just wondering if anybody else has noticed this?

I'm having the exact same issue. I own a Late 2008 MacBook Pro, Late 2011 MacBook Pro, and now the Late 2013 MacBook Pro and of the three only the Late 2013 MacBook Pro demonstrates the lack of WiFI performance. I've tried it with mutliple different wireless networks with Bluetooth turned on and turned off with no noteable difference in levels of performance.
From the quantity of posts I've seen from a simple Google Search, it appears the problem is fairly widespread and really points to an issue with either the WiFi antenna, interferance, or a combination of the two.
I'm planning on opening a Support Case with Apple and I would recommend others do the same in order to get more visibility on the issue.

  • Late 2013 13" rMBP Thunderbolt/VTD Issue...

I just recieved my late 2013 13" rMBP and am trying to use a Buffalo HD-PA1.0TU3 external thunderbolt drive with it. The drive works fine on my 2011 Air and 2011 13" MBP, both over thunderbolt. I'm experiencing issues with my new rMBP however when I try to copy any data to/from the drive. The error
    vtd[0] fault: device 10:0:0 reason 0x6 R:0x100600000
keeps popping up when I try to copy from or to the drive. At this point the copy operation is hung and only cancels when I remove the thunderbolt cable from the laptop. Occasionally if I leave the drive hooked up and sitting there while the copy operation is hung the laptop screen will go black and remain that way until I remove the thunderbolt cable. Once that happens the screen will immediately turn back on and the laptop will be perfectly usable (except for the whole being able to use my thunderbolt drives.) I've also tested with a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt drive that works on the 2011 Air and 2011 MBP, but it has the exact same issue as the Buffalo one. Thunderbolt networking however works fine between the rMBP and either my Air or older MBP. I unfortunately don't have anymore thunderbolt peripherals I can test though. Was wondering if anyone has seen this error before? I searched some and all I could find out is that there is some VTD fault happening with device 10:0:0 which is something on the thunderbolt bus according to ioreg (I'm assuming it's the disk drive.)
    Thanks!

  • X1 annoying fan noise even in standby.

Yesterday I switched out my Cisco RNG200 black HD DVR for the new X1 DVR.   Receiver Native Ver 2.0.2
    XRE Protocol Ver 2.8.0
Environment p6-k6 This X1 unit is the one with the blue LED power, which from my google searching tells me its the latest ?  Unfortuntely, there's a very annoying fan noise that has no way of turning itself off, unless i pull the power from the unit. Even in standby mode...  I only watch TV for a small percentage of my time spent in my living room, so to have to put up with a constant fan noise even when no TV is being watched is simply unacceptable.  It's coming in at 50db using SPL Meter on my iPhone next to it. and about 45db from my seating position.  Is this an inherrent design flaw of the unit, and will i be wasting my time and effort, switching the box out for something that will be equally as loud ?  I understand that this has an atom cpu and some form of cooling is req'd, but even while on standby?  At this point, i will have to go back to my local store and ask if i can either have my old RNG 200 back or move to a different provider, that has better designed hardware.  Unless I am just unlucky and that yes the fans do normally only spin up when req'd, and that i have a faulty box. Please advise.

Not as easy as just swapping unfortunately.  I've now been to two stores... Spent Fri, and Sat morning on this now. Even though they even had an Arris XG1-A as their display model, they tried to deny Arris made X1 boxes. That was at least until i showed them the underside of their own box, with the Arris sticker, and used my SPL meter app on my phone at the difference of noise coming from this box and the other Pace they had on show..  Regardless of which, they said, they didn't have any. But the lady was pretty good, she said, they could request a shipment of an X1 box, and only put it in the notes to make it an Arris box...  I guess i have a one in four chance...  I also took an Xi3 box, and that's proven to be a pain also... not in noise, but in activation. After an exchange at one of the local stores and it doing the same thing, and a lenghty call to customer service, i'm having a tech come out to look into the issue. Kudos to Comcast for having escalated this to one of their X1 tier 3 support teams, who was savvy enough to realize that there's nothing wrong with my signal, and that i probably need a Point of Entry Filter installed at my box outside...  Anyway, this whole X1 transition hasn't been much fun all in all.  I still have a noisy box, that i'm not going to be able to put up with.. Came downstairs this morning, and it was the first thing i heard... Hopefully the one that's being shipped will resolve...  I now know that the box can be hidden away somewhere completely different and have the remote control still work, but that isn't as simple as it may seem.. I'd still need to get an HDMI signal from the box to the TV, and it would involve cutting into my walls to run cat6 to accomplish that.  I may just opt for the old 80's style clunky i-guide, instead of the x1... if my third attempt of getting an Arris box fails... That or go to Dish, as the XOD has so many drawbacks on the older iGuide system.

  • Late 2013 13' rMBP, Apple uses DDR3 instead of DDR3L?

    Hi guys,
Just bought my late 2013 13' rMBP 8g,256 week ago and had 10 times freezes (the first one was in front of an apple employee during the first time initial setup). That's a well known bug so just wait for the updates. The thing is after I browsed my Mac's memory spec it shows Two of the 4g are DDR3, NOT the DDR3L. Do you guys think Apple uses DDR 3 instead of DDR 3L? Or just the stupid mavericks can not recognize DDR 3L memory?
    Cheers,

  • Late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Hot even if turned off

Hi Guys, has anyone encountered this issue? My late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2.6 Ghz, 8Gb Ram, 512 SSD is Hot even if it's turned off. So when I power it up, it already drained some of it's charge, and when I check the Temperature using Temperature Guage, the CPU temperature is at 59 degrees Celcius, might I stress that this reading is from a newly turned on macbook pro with out any apps running( at idle stage). My friend who bought his late 2013 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2.4 Ghz, 8Gb Ram and 258 SSD also has this issues.
Is this normal with the Haswell Chip? Because my slightly older late 2012 13" Macbook Pro Retina 2.5ghz, 8gb Ram, 128 SSD never did manifest anything like that. And when I turn it on, the battery has the same charge as when I turned it off.
    Any insights on this?
    Thanks!

Open Activity monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low.  Are there any CPU gluttons that can be identified?
If your MBP is still in the warranty period, consider an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP Crashs & Restarts

    Hello,
I have some problems with my new Mac:
15-inch, Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2
Every now and then it all of a sudden stops working and shuts down with an error message, which just tells me the Mac encountered an error and must be restarted.
I tried everything Apple told me, still doing it :-(
    I tried:
         - Reset NVRAM/PRAM
         - Reinstall Mavericks
What can it be, and what can I do?
Pretty stupid I spend over 3300 $ on a laptop which isn't working..
I don't now what I can post to help you help me, so I just tried to attach some screenshots of one of the latest crash reports, and some screenshots of the console systemdiagnostics.
"BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Google Chrome He" <-- Google Chrome problem?
I tried googling, but only found old posts with Chrome problems and no fix besides googles own updates.. I also read something about Graphics Card problems in the new rMBP's, can it be something like that?

Aaaaaand another crash! This time with:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: WindowServer
    http://pastebin.com/uPnGB4DB
@Melophage, I have not tried Safe Mode, but I will give it a shot.
Still interesting in knowing what I should do here, should Apple have a look at the machine or? Pretty unsatisfied with paying this much for a PC crashing every single day..

  • Late-2013 13" rMBP Poor Battery Life ( 5 Hours)

I recently purchased a Late-2013 13" Retina MacBook Pro and the battery life is nowhere near Apple's rating.  I've doing light web surfing with medium brightness, no keyboard backlight, and no bluetooth, and I get less than 5 hours on a full charge.
Most reviewers seem to be getting 9-10 hours and I have no idea how that's possible.
I cycled the battery a couple of times when I first got the laptop, but otherwise haven't done anything special.  I've installed all available updates, and have only found one or two other people with this  same issue.  Nothing seems to be using the CPU excessively, so I have no idea what could be causing such a huge battery drain.
I may try restting PRAM and the SMC controller, but otherwise I have no idea what to do.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

same here, way bellow 5 hours! my old 2.3 model 2011 with normal non SSD drive used to have a bettr battery life. this is disappointing.
I think it may be Mavericks as this machine should not drain battery. all hardware used is battery efficient. don't know, i don't find anything else to plame but OS! hope apple will address that issue in future mavericks updates.
I'l report this issue. have you guys done so?

  • Audible fan noise even when idle.

    I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook 10.5.1 4GB Ram.
WHENEVER I use the laptop I can hear the fan. It is not loud just a constant low drone in the background. Enough to be distracting.
It is running at 1800rpm. CPU temp ~38oC, processor usage pretty much zero for ten minutes.
I only ever heard the fan on my old iBook when running intensive activities.
    Is this normal?

1800 rpm is the lowest fan speed, it is normal, however, there shouldn't be much of a sound except for a lil' wind blowing sound in the exhaust.

  • Late 2013 15" rMBP Can not DL Windows drivers. Get this pop-up "This Mac only supports Windows 7. Do you want to continue?"

Whenver I try to DL the Windows drivers from Bootcamp Assistant, I get a pop up that says "This Mac only supports Windows 7. Do you want to continue?".  I click continue, but the download always fails stating "Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." and the utility shuts down.  This has happened for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 iso's.
I've chatted with support online and they basically led me through the steps of resetting the SMC and PRAM, but this has not worked.
The odd thing is, Bootcamp assistant was able to download the drivers successfully the first couple of times, only to fail during the installation of Windows, with the infamous "Can not load boot configuration" error.  Ever since those first couple of times, I am unable to succesfully download the drivers.
    Frustrating...any ideas?

The first time I installed windows 7, I had no issues what so ever. Then I decided to installed windows 8.1. So I went ahead removed the windows 7 partition via BootCamp. When I tired to install windows 8.1, I ran into the exact same issue. I went ahead and tired to reinstall windows 7 and the issue persisted.
Would be nice to find a solution for this problem.

  • Late 2013 13" rMBP Scaled resolutions

I'm primarily a developer, and so I require as much screen estate as possible.
I know that the default and 'best' resolution for the retina is 1280x800, but this is ridiculously small. Is it possible to use the scaled resolution at all times (1440x900 or 1680x1050) and will this have much of an affect on peformance and quality?
    Thanks.

There are multiple 3rd party apps that will allow you to set the resolution to whatever you want. Performance may vary minimally depending on what you set the resolution to.

  • Noise from MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013

    Hi,
I wonder if noise from my MacBook Pro Retina 13 late 2013 is normal. I can hear it only in quiet room (first time I heard it in the middle of the night).  It’s very quiet noise. I don't know what to compare this noise. For me it’s sounds like clicking the spring. I can hear it when scrolling the webpage by trackpad, start mission control by gesture (or F3 key), changing the full screen apps by gesture or when minimize Safari or other apps. I think it depends on the graphic system work. It’s a little lauder when I use 1680x1050 scaled resolution than use 'best for display' resolution. I think the noise occurs when graphic system do some operation. Is it possible?
Today I was in Authorized Service Provider but technician heard nothing. There I can't hear this noise too, because this noise is very quiet and there is not total silence. Diagnostic tools show that everything is ok. But I still hear it in total quiet room. I tried to record this noise by iPhone but it can't do that.
Can you do me a favor and check this on your MacBook? Sit in totally quiet room, please. Set the scaled resolution 1680x1050 then bring ear closer to the keyboard and scroll a webpage (which have a lot of graphics) by gesture on the trackpad, start mission control or open notification center. Can you hear then any noise? Please listen carefully, because this is very quiet noise.
I’ll be very gratefully for your help. I wonder if only my MacBook making this noises or all MacBook Retina late 2013 making this.
    Regards,
    Mateusz

    Hi Mateusz,
I have the same issue on my new MBP retina 13 late 2013. It's not disturbing because I can hear it in only very quiet room and only if the content of the screen is changing (like scrolling web pages). It reminds me the sound of old 3'5'' hard discs. I first thought it's a hdd, but then realised my mac has only SSD.
I think it's a noise from the voltage regulators. This is normal for very high speed high-voltage signals.
But any way, MBP 13 late 2013 is the best laptop I ever saw
It's just silent and cool like an ipad. I wonder if it has a rotating cooler at all.
    Jon Bo
Thank you Jon Bo for your response. I agree with you. This noise is something like electronic noise, and it is related to the graphics card.
The rMBP 13 late 2013 works without any noise other then situations I’ve described above. The noise is so quiet that I can't hear it when e.g. external HDD working in the same room.
