Did you upgradde the RAM? If so, this may be your problem.
If you want to upgrade to 32GB of RAM on your late 2013 27" iMac and don't want to pay Apple prices, buy the RAM from OWC.
My iMac, crashed with the first batch of Kingston RAM sourced from an Apple approved service centre. Fortunately I got a full refund then sourced the RAM from OWC and it works perfectly.
The benefits of OWC are
1) You can order and ship globally
2) The price is very competitve
3) The website clearly states how they test the RAM and the comaptibility with your computers model no.
4) They have a 30 day refund and a lifetime replacement policy
5) You can get a rebate on your old RAM, although I didn't bother taking this up.
Having been through the hassle, using OWC RAM is a no brainer and in my opinion the most convenient and effective upgrade. Hope this helps your decision!

Looks like this is a hardware issue.
No word yet if it's Apple or Crucial's fault.

  • More frequent Kernel Panics on late 2013 iMac

For the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing random iMac restarts with the kernel panic message (http://core0.staticworld.net/images/article/2013/02/kernel-panic-pre-ml_300-1000 24407-medium.png). I have not installed anything suspicious, I have verified the HDD, everything is ok, done the hardware test after a restart (the D button) with no issues found and when I go to the Library, Logs there is no kernel panic report nor any other information on the issue. It seems as the aforementioned message just appears, the iMac restarts and comes back to normal without any additional problems/problem information.
I have late 2013 iMac with os 10.10, everything up to date and fabric Ram memory with a lot of free space on the HDD.
I would really appreciate if someone could give me some pointers or let me know what this could be. Thanks a lot!

  • New late 2013 iMac running slow

I purchased a new 21 in iMac in Dec 2013 (late 2013 model), and ever since, its been running very slow. Its slowness is mostly erratic and random, however very noticeable while running Office for Mac documents (Word & Excel), it takes anything from 30 sec - 1 min just to launch these apps. And equally slow while running Aperture (I am a photographer and this is my primary app). I usually end up restarting the iMac several times a day in the hope that it'll speed up. Every one who has seen me work on it has laughed that its slower than most ancient Windows machines.
Over the past few months, with support from Apple customer service, I have reformatted, re-partitioned and reinstalled Maverics on the iMac (and my MBP, which has the same issues), and done everything else that apple normally recommends as routine procedure, but no improvement in performance. The Apple support person has now stopped responding to my calls or emails.
    What could be possible issues?
In my system preferences pane, there is 'Flash player' and 'Java' in the non-system apps installed. I guess we cant do without either of these.
Could there be a problem with my data? The data on my iMac is the same as on my MBP, as I transfered it via TimeMachine when i purchased the iMac.

hi Here is the report from EtreCheck generated on my iMac. Any suggestions on what the issue could be and how to resolve it are welcome. There is 200+ GB free space on the 1TB drive.

  • Graphics related crashes since Yosemite on a 27' late 2013 iMac

    Hello all,
My 27 inch late 2013 iMac with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB started freezing or auto-rebooting since I updated to Yosemite.
Crashes would occur randomly and were sometimes accompanied by lots of red boxes on the screen.
These kind of crashes seem to have stopped happening but now shifted to almost everytime I fire up Launchpad or Expose (and once when I opened the notifcation center). The screen freezes for a couple of seconds and the system will reboot, prompting me with a graphics related error.
Because my searches on this issue come up empty I would like to ask if anyone can tell me whether or not this is a bug or a hardware related problem.
    Thanks for any help
Maybe related: My iMac sometimes takes a more than usual amount of seconds to wake from sleep. The screen will turn on but remain black.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Late 2013 iMac running very slow

EVERYTHING is running slow.  My iphoto screensaver keeps freezing, all apps open super slow (wheel spins and spins) and iCal is not syncing properly with google calendar anymore.  I'm not sure what happened in the past few weeks but it has gotten bad!  My computer is only a couple months old.  I ran etrecheck in hopes someone can tell me what's going on.  I also ran disc utility and it found nothing wrong with my hard drive.  I'm running 10.9.1, 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB memory.
Thanks in advance!!  If all else fails I will head to the nearest Genius Bar.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My imac randomly restarts and then takes 45 minutes to load.  What can I do to fix it?

I upgraded to Mavericks as soon as it released a few weeks ago.  This is the only change I've made, no new programs or apps otherwise.  Last week my imac randomly restarted and then took 45 minutes to load.  It's done this about 5 times in the last week.  I need some help resolving this.
I've gone through the disk utility to repair/verify the hard drive, and it's done nothing to solve this issue.
I do have a time machine and am wondering if it would be too drastic to reformat and restore from the time machine.
Any help would be appreciated!  I have work to do!

  • Problem installing Windows 7 64-bit on late 2013 iMac 27"

Is Windows 7 64-bit compatible with this computer?
    Hardware and software:
    • Late 2013 iMac 27", 3.5 GHz I7, 16 GB memory, 1 TB hard drive (no fusion drive)
    • Mac OS 10.9.1
    • USB thumb drive
    • Boot Camp Assistant 5.1.0
    • Windows 7 64-bit install disk iso image downloaded from Microsoft
    Install steps:
    1. Use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 install (from iso image) and Apple Support Software (creates WININSTALL USB drive)
    2. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create 50 GB Windows partition on iMac internal drive and start Windows install
    3. Complete initial install steps until given option to select install partition
    4. Select 50 GB partition. Error message that partition is not formatted correctly. Use Advance Options to format (presumably to NTFS)
    5. Select 50 GB partition again and click "Next"
    6. Get error message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
    7. Install quits at this point
I have successfully installed Win 7 on another computer (2010 Mac Pro) using these steps. I also tried installation on the iMac using an iso image created from my original Win 7 64-bit install disk, with the same installation error as above.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 and/or Boot Camp is compatible with this iMac. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am awaiting delivery on the exact model you have and have been researching how much trouble it will be to put 64 bit windows 7 ultimate on my machine when it gets here. I'm not pleased at what I've been reading so far. I have not seen the two other posts but yours is enough to concern me.
Have you also seen that 10.9.1 update may be responsible for this? I've seen where 10.9 caused some problems with the bootcamp app but then the process was completely hosed with the 10.9.1 update. Are you seeing this as well?
Being a life-long mac dude, it pains me when their stuff just doesn't work because it usually just does. ****, that's why I started on a mac in the first place.
The support site says that they come with 90 days of complimentary support. Is this not an issue they should be responsible for addressing via support? Or is that just one long wait on hold waiting to talk to somebody that won't consider this a pure apple issue?
I was also curious if your install .iso contains both 32 and 64 bit versions?

  • Fusion Drive of late 2013 Imac

  • Installing Windows 7 on Late 2013 iMac w/ Fusion Drive

Sorry in advance for the long post, but I have tried to exhaust all possibilities, and bring as much knowledge about our environment to the table to avoid confusion.
Here's our goal:  Install Mac & Windows on a Late 2013 iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive
Install our Mac Image with Deepfreeze on Partition 1
Install our Windows 7 x64 Image with DeepFreeze on Partition 2
Here's why our goal cannot work out of the box:
Deepfreeze for Mac, is not supported on a Fusion Drive. Now before anyone says "just don't use deepfreeze"...we are using it, and that is that.
In order to get our existing image to work on the iMac, we had to split the Fusion Drive.
    Splitting Up the Fusion Drive
We booted into Recovery, Opened up terminal, retrieved the LvGUID, deleted it, and split up the SSD from the HD.
So now, we have a 128GB SSD, and 1TB HD showing up under Diskutilitiy.
We then partitioned the 1TB HD, into two, 500GB Partitions. One for Mac OSX 10.9.4, and the other for Windows.
The 128GB SSD is going to be used for scratch space, temp, etc. And is irrelevant at this time.
    Deploying our Mac Image
After splitting the Fusion Drive, we netbooted and installed a "NetRestore" of our image. Worked completely fine, no issues. DeepFreeze Works fine, the 128GB SSD shows up just fine, and the other 500GB Windows Partition shows up fine. All drives / partitions can be written to with no problem.
    Deploying our Windows Image
Deployed our Windows Partition image as we have done in the past, by booting into a windows PE Disk. (We have other various 2009, 2010, and 2011 iMacs across campus, with NO FUSION DRIVES installed, and dual boot them successfully using the same procedure. Minus the splitting of the fusion drive part of course) After the Windows image is deployed to the windows partition, we then boot it up to a Windows 7 Install disk to fix the MBR, Bootrec, and BCD options to allow it to boot properly. Here's where we run into issues: Upon getting the Windows 7 Install screen, the USB Keyboard and Mouse, DO NOT WORK.
Here's the options we've tried to get them to work properly
    1. Tried another known working Mac USB Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
    2. Tried a known working Windows Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
    3. Plugged Just a known working Mac Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    4. Plugged Just a known working Windows Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    5. Plugged Just a known working Mac Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    6. Plugged Just a known working Windows Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    7. A Windows 8.1 Recovery USB will boot and the USB Mouse & Keyboard are recognized and installed! (YAY!!) However, we cannot repair a Windows 7 install with Windows 8.1..
    BootCamp Drivers & Support Media
Downloaded the Current BootCamp Support drivers to enable the USB and other various drivers to be loaded during setup (Placed the $WinPEDriver$ and AutoUnattend.xml, and BootCamp folder on the Root of a USB, and modified a Windows7 Installation disk and placed on the root as well) The drivers do not load. Have also placed on a brand new USB2, and USB3 flash drive formatted at FAT32, to see if that made a difference, which it did not. The BootCamp USB made within Mac, it loads saying "Now booting into Boot Camp Assistant Created USB Drive..." or something like that (Don't remember the exact Message)
    Side Note:
Restored Fusion Drive to its original State, and booted from the BootCamp USB drive, still no usb Mouse & Keyboard Support.

    I have same issue
Tried everything differend hdd, ssd  as well
Basically when trying instal win 7 via iOS maverick when reboting and windows booting to the first scree everything freezing cant do  much.
Also tried install clear ssd without any system, but soon after format ssd or hdd I have error that I cant use this disk to install windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is funny Windows 8 installing without any problem!!!
what is going on APPLE??wher is support
This issue I have only on Late 2013 on my other Late 2012 this issue not exist and everything working as should.

  • Cannot install Windows 8.1 on Late 2013 iMac

Attempting to install Windows 8.1 (retail) using Boot Camp Assistant but when I get to the "Select disk to install windows" screen, nothing appears.
I'm using a retail copy of the Windows 8.1 full installer DVD and I have the midrange 21.5" late-2013 iMac.

Installed my retail copy of Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 without any hiccups or hacks. Windows 7 can be installed in trial mode for free and easily by downloading a legal ISO from Digital River. Create a USB installation with Boot Camp Assistant and proceed as normal using the Windows 7 ISO. During Installtion, skip entering a license. After Windows 7 is successfuly installed, boot back into OSX and create just a drivers USB using Boot Camp Assistant. Boot back into Windows, insert your retail Windows 8.1 disc or use your download and let it install. Be prepared to do several "Hold-Option" boots to kick it into windows. Installation probably had 6 reboots.

  • Cannot install Win 8 on a late 2013 iMac using bootcamp on 10.9

I'm trying to install Win 8 on a late 2013 iMac (purchased a couple of months ago)
I have a win 8 pro DVD, but obviously there is no DVD in this iMac. I usally use the DVD drive in my older 2009 iMac for any disk based installs but I can't appear to use it here.
I followed the instructions and downloaded a Win 8 Pro ISO from Microsoft to use with my authentication code, created a bootable USB using bootcamp, created the partition and rebooted. Once I'd entered the code I get to the install location but it says I cannot install on the partition created by bootcamp. Even if I format the partition it says I need a GPT drive but I have MBR, so won't let me install.
I tried several suggestions including creating aprtitions in various other programs and once I even got past that screen, but as soon as it tried to install I got another error saying the MBR was formatted incorrectly and it failed.
I had no issues installing Win 7 via bootcamp on the older iMac, but this one has me stumped. I used to think I knew a bit about computers, but I'm fairly new to Mac related issues as the older iMac has always just worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I just installed Windows 8.1 on my Late 2013.
There are just a couple of things I had to do that deviated from the Boot Camp Installation Manual.
    1.  I downloaded my copy of Windows 8.1 as an ISO image AND as a bootable USB from the Microsoft site.
Not sure why I did that but it came in handy because Bootcamp was taking a very long time to copy the ISO onto the USB stick..
The ISO copying seemed to freeze up, but it's likely that it was just taking a long time, probably 20mins.
So, instead of waiting, I took the contents of the the USB startup stick and simply moved them over to the stick that Bootcamp had formatted for the ISO copy (I cancelled that copy function and deleted any files that had copied but didnt complete).
Once that was done, the machine rebooted from the USB stick and began the normal Windows setup process.
All went very smoothly except that my mouse was not working.
    2.     To get around the mouse issue, I simply plugged in a MS USB Mouse and it worked immediately.
The Bootcamp manual advised that the way around this was to 'click in upper right corner and search for Bootcamp'.   Problem was, it was nowhere to be found.
So, using my MS mouse, I navigated to the 'DESKTOP' icon in Win 8.1 and found File Explorer, which showed my USB stick connected along with Bootcamp and the MS Support File (i.e. All the Apple Drivers).
I began manually clicking on all the driver files until realizing that there IS a Bootcamp executable which will automatically install the drivers for the Nvidia card, keyboard, camera, mouse, etc....
Once that was done, my installation was completed.
The entire process took about an hour, but now that I've done it, it really shouldnt take much more than 45 mins.
I have the late 2013 iMAC, with the GTX780M and 1TB Fusion Drive i5 Quad Core.
For those who are leery about doing this, please note that I'm a PC 'lifer' and this is my very first go-around with doing anything on an Apple product.
It all went much more smoothly than I could have imagined, but if you are not a PC person, you might be a little challenged finding the Bootcamp in File Explorer or doing anything in Win 8.1 to get over these minor hurdles.
    Good luck!
I'm looking forward to getting STEAM up and running to see how this thing games!

  • Will Late 2013 iMac boot from Snow Leopard External Drive?

    Hey gang-
Got a new late-2013 iMac for Christmas (yayyyy!!)
I plan on running Mavericks for day-to-day use, but there are a few old Power PC apps that I occasionally need to run. Does anyone know if the new iMacs will boot from an external drive running Snow Leopard? I have an external Firewire drive with Snow Leopard on it and I'm wondering if the new iMac will boot from it if needed.
    Thanks!
    Dave

Thanks gang.   No worries- I keep an older Intel MacBook with Snow Leopard on it and I suppose it will do in a pinch.
    Cheers!
    Dave

  • I just bought the new late 2013 iMac.  Can I get the new iWork for free?

I just bought a new late 2013 iMac.  Can I get the new iWork for free?  I updated it to Mavericks also.  The Mac App store is showing $19.99 for each iWork component (Pages, Numbers, Keynote).  I also bought the previous iWork version, if that matters.  Free updates for iPhoto and  iMovie seemed to show up with no problems.  Maybe these are just glitches that will clear up in a couple of days?

Hi.  If you want it to get updated, this should take care of it.
    1. Uninstall iWork from your Mac.
    2. Do a fresh install of iWork from DVD.
    3. Install iWork update from Apple Downloads (direct link here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1563)
    4. Sign into the Mac App Store, and check for updates.  It should now show up as a free update.  You may have to give it a few minutes (i.e. 10-15 minutes).
I've been a Windows user for years, so I know all of the tricks by now.  I had hoped I would not need this knowledge for a Mac, but oh well...
    Good luck.

  • Crazy to buy a maxed out late 2013 iMac now?

Was waiting to see if there would be any update but alas, no.  Not sure I want to be an early adopter of a retina 27" iMac.  Looking at a nearly maxed out non-retina (aka late 2013) 27" iMac.  Only about $400 less than similar equipped retina model.  Am I crazy or what?   Use is just home computing and home video/photo editing.  I just looked at retina 27 in store. I can see the  difference if I try   I don't see point in waiting for next gen chips either.

I just did something similiar.  I waited and waited for the Retina iMac to be released before I made my final iMac decision.  I was on board for even max'ing out the Retina iMac until I learned it would not support Target Display Mode.  I already own a Macbook Pro w/Retina.  And while I understand not seeing 5k each and every time, I expected (current technology limitations or not) the Target Display Mode to simply reproduce the same resolution as the Macbook Pro when connected via Thunderbolt.
Once I learned that the Retina iMac did not work as a secondary monitor I made my Late-2013 iMac decision.  I understand where you are coming from because I had the same 'fears'.
It kills me to not have the 5k version when it exists, but last year's version (including TDM functionality) fit my day to day needs better.
