Late MacBook Pro's built in iSight acting weird (goes thru color cycle)

I got my late MacBook Pro 2.4, and it was all good, and during one of my iChat video conferences the other person informed me that my video was acting strange. It was going through a color cycle (green, red, yellow, etc), you could see my image but it would cycle through each color very very fast and non-stop.
I had the unit replaced, got the new one, and it all seemed perfect, until last night, the color cycle started up for about 3 seconds and stopped again. What could be the problem? Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a software thing?
Thanks.

I had the same problem. After a few seconds of the color cycle it would go to black. This was on any program using the iSight including Skype, Photo Booth and iChat.
They replaced my display/iSight and it's fine now.

For starters... if you launch PhotoBooth or FaceTime, does the camera work?  If you're trying to use it on a website, many sites access the camera via Flash.  You would need to download and install Flash from Adobe:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/
    (select the OS X installer)

A few weeks ago my on screen charging indicator started acting funny.  Normally it takes my macbook around 2 hours to charge fully.  However, sometimes the indicator says anywhere upwards of 4 hours.  Furthermore, sometimes the indicator keeps switching back from the charging symbol to not charging.  Why is this happening?  Here is my power info:

How does it look?  Could the problem be in the mag safe charger or the computer itself?
    Thanks for the help.

    Try Troubleshooting the MagSafe adapter
Thanks for that link.  It did provide some diagnostic tools to see if the adapter is the culprit.  I don't believe mine is.  My situation, MacBook Pro 8,2 - early 2011, 2.3 GHz i7.  I'm experiencing, while on the adapter, after the battery charges to 100% a slow drop (while connected to the power adapter) to 98%, 97%, etc.  Unplugging the adapter for a bit will again bring it back up to 100% but it again starts to drop.  I don't think it's the battery - have good on battery performance (in bare bones boot - a special user with no StartUp items) I can get 5-7 hours.  I suspect the power adapter - one glaring issue: I have a CAT who thought it cute to chew on the cable but I couldn't tell if it was superficial or had actually damaged the wires inside past the protective sheath.  I suspect this could be the issue and have ordered a new adapter.  My wife suggested coating the cable with lemon juice to make it less tempting for the cat to bite on.  This isn't the first cable this cat (never caught "red handed") has chose to chew on.  My Jawbone charge cable was completely severed.  I took measures to make the cables less accessible but the damage had already been done to the Mag Safe Power Adapter.  As I said, my monthly "battery exercise" fully charges the battery - it is this mysterious battery percentage drop that has me wondering.  I read somewhere that some are blaming Mountain Lion, I'm not so quick to do so until I get the new adapter.
This post may have been better off in a new topic, but since we're talking about the Mag Safe Power Adapter I thought it would be okay here, especially since the link to the KB article gave me ideas on what to look for.  The pins in the cable were all up, I presume the middle pin is different and will look different as to its height compared to the two outboard/inboard pins, yes?  There was no issue with the laptop end of the connector.  I did not switch out the "duck head" with the long cord though.  With the cable damage issue I thought I'd wait and see.  Now that I think of it I could have borrowed my wife's adapter - same MBP, almost, but should both have the 85w adapter.  We'll see...

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Slowing down and acting weird for no apparent reason.

I got this computer in September 2010 new from apple. Macbook Pro 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5. memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 build: 10J869 version 10.6.7
Recently it seems to have hit a wall (running very slow). When I try to open any program it takes 10 times longer than normal...Always beach balling. This isn't normal. I have not been running many programs besides firefox and itunes lately. And The occasional Word Processor document. Sometimes when I type the computer will go very slow letter by letter. (it takes a few seconds to type one word) Also, sometimes it will work normally. I haven't had any weird error messages. Although, just a few minutes ago I was in Firefox and the words at the top of the screen vanished. (File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Window-----all disappear)
Please help, the computer is not very old, I don't understand why this is happening.

A slow computer can be caused by a multitude of issues. The first thing I'd try is to check in Activity Monitor (Application - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and run it while you are doing your normal computing, what I'd recommend looking for are 2 things:
    1. Look to see if there is an application or applications that is taking a lot of %CPU. For example if you noticed FireFox or iTunes using 85% of your CPU that is a huge red flag something is wrong.
    2. Next click the System Memory tab towards the bottom and see how much FREE RAM you have during normal computing. If it's 500MB or below then your system is starved for RAM.
Report back what you find and then we can test some other items.

  • My Macbook Pro with 8600m gt is acting weird

I run Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro. About a week ago, I was playing a game and I realised that it was stuttering a lot, more than usual. So I opened up GPU-Z and I saw that the 8600m gt was set at PCI Express x1 instead of x16. Is there any way to fix this or is this a symptom of the well-known 8600m problem?

You have the Mac with the failing Nvidia 8600 graphic chip. Please read this Apple KB article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377
If it is less then 4 year old from date of purchase take it to a Apple Genius Bar TODAY. Do not wait because if it fails completely they will not fix it.
If it is over 4 years old, like one day over 4 years old, you will be faced with paying for the repair yourself or buying a new computer. If that is the case, you have to pay for the repair, buy anything other then a Mac. JMO.

  • External disks (Firewire/USB) won't boot in late Macbook Pro 2013, but do work in earlier Mac's. How to fix it?

    Hi
It always worked, till now. If I sell a Apple notebook because I bought a new one, I make a clone with CCC and with Command-R or Choose Startup disk I say to the new machine: now eat this, here's my old stuff.
It's a great way of upgrading to a new machine. But.. my late Macbook Pro 2013 (Retina, 16 Gb) doesn't allow me to boot from any of my disks: not Firewire, not USB 2.0 and not USB 3.0 (Imagine how many hours I lost to find this out). Btw, the disk image did boot on ANY OTHER Mac, besides the late Macbook Pro 2013.
In some threads, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5499231?tstart=0, it's suggested that it has to do with a special Maverick that doesn't allow older "machines" to be booted from USB.
Anyway, here I am with a tremendous problem. Got my files safe in a clone, but my machine doesn't allow me to boot from it. Btw, out of desperation I tried to use the Migration Assistant, but that made a mess of Adobe versions.
Is there any workaround? How do I get the files + system files from my USB / Firewire disk to my Macbook Pro?

I took the precaution to update my old Macbook Pro to the same Maverick version and EFF as my new one. The problem is rooted somewhere in the special version (and not the Combo) of Maverick.
Now I need something to outwit this. Gonna try to make an image of the clone, deleting a version file and than feed it once more. Will post the results here.

  • Ventrilo on MacBook Pro with Built-In Mic

I recently installed Ventrilo 3.0.1 client and cannot get it to recognize my MacBook Pro's built-in mic. The software is working otherwise, as it connects to the server and I can hear others.
The MacBook Pro Sound control panel is set to built-in mic and the sound check is OK. In Ventrilo, the Sound Input is set to built-in mic and the Mute Sound and Mute Microphone Binds are unchecked. I turned the Amplifiers up but still got nothing.
The Ventrilo site's FAQ and setup guides have no info on the subject, and I can't find this exact problem on any of the previous posts in this discussion forum.
    Thanks...

btw, I have already seen much ado regarding the external mic/headset difficulties people have had regarding non-amplified mics/headsets, and understand how to make that work, though I would like to know which USB headsets some of you have had success with, but I am wondering why the internal microphone wouldn't work.
I have seen some posts claiming that even USB headsets have difficulties under Leopard that they don't have with Tiger.
As Apple saw fit not to provide built-in playthrough from audio mini-plug line in, I have used the 3rd party LineIn software as a work around. Is there something else out there that gets USB headsets and Ventrilo to play nice together?

i m havind 15inch 2011 late macbook pro lap i7 processor 8gb ram 1tb hdd can i use avid media composer and final cut pro in this specifications?

Can't speak about avid, since I am not familiar with the software.
You can certainly use FCP X on that machine. It should work better if you use a fast external drive for your media and projects.
There is a free trial, so try it out and see how it goes. You should also follow some good video tutorials, if you are not familiar with the application. FCP X is a lot different from Avid, Premiere or even Final Cut Pro 7.

The Mid-2007 model didn't come out until June 2007, so you must have bought an earlier model. It won't run Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.x), but it might run Lion (10.7.x) if you can get hold of a copy, depending on which earlier model it is.
Lion requires at least a Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The first MacBook Pros came out in January 2006, but they had "Core Duo" processors (no "2"). The Core 2 Duo MacBook Pros came out in October 2006. You could have bought either in March 2007.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart

Sorry I said sorta wrong. I can shut down and I can update to the point of restart but it just sat for 45 minutes after an update. It goes through the update and to restart then the bars chase each other in a circle and it never restarts. So I hit the power button and go through normal reboot but loosing the update in the process. It does not matter how long I wait for a natural reboot after an update or click to restart it will chase the little bar in circles all day literally and never reboot.

Did the message say what was corrupt. It is not clear from your description of "...it was corrupt" what "it" is. Sounds like the download of Lion was corrupt. Download it again. Downloaded files sometimes get corrupted due to network connection glitches or interruptions.

Hey! exact same thing happens to me... I use the keyboard shortcut to turn off the screen which is ctrl - shift - eject button. Then just poke a key and it wakes up again fine, it doesn't fix the problem but at elast you don't have to reboot. x
