Lately Safari is 'not responding'

The last 3 or 4 days, each time I have used Safari, I have to force quit. I haven't used Disk Uitility since last summer so I ran it last night. Safari become unresponsive again tonight.
Activity Monitor confirmed a spike in activity ['Reads In'] but I don't know enough about such functions to know what is going on, whether a security breach or other problem. Any ideas?

The pref file for Safari is com.apple.Safari.plist. Sorry I could have mentioned it earlier...
You can keep a copy of it if you like. Then trash the original and see if that fixes your problem. You will not lose things like bookmarks...these are just your Safari preferences. But it is possible you would have to redo a few preferences.
The location is your User account then the Library/Preferences folder. Or you can just Spotlight it...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

I have just had a new hard drive and updated my os x 10.7.5 but safari will not respond. The computer is exceptionally quiet and gets far hotter in the top left corner than I remember it.
I am also trying to restore files from carbonate which freezes a lot.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Safari Is Not Responding When I View other Programs

When I have Safari open, and move the mouse to the upper left corner of the screen to view other programs - when I try to return to Safari it does not respond. Instead it sits in the background and will not come up or let me close it. It happened for the first time last night, and again this morning.

Shouldn't have! I'd be surprised if it did - but it wouldn't be the first time I'd been surprised by a computer!!!

Why the top bar at Safari is not responding and the book picture stays blue

the last two days the bar at the top of safari page is not responding. The book indicator looks like it stays pressed and all other functions are blocked.

    Delete safari .plist file.
    Quit all applications.
    Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
    Select "Library" from the drop down.
    Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist
    Right click on it and select "Move it to Trash".
    Restart.    Relaunch Safari.
    If this doesn't help, put back the com.apple.Safari.plist
    Right click the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Open”.
    Right click the com.apple.Safari.plist and select “Put Back”.

Safari still not responding after updating to 8.1.2

My iPad is fully up to date but still does not open the browser every time. It comes up with Server not responding. Mac Format suggested changing the DNS settings but why would you do this when the iMac and iPhone are working fine. An iPad that can't access the internet is not fit for purpose in my view. Inly a complete restart cures it.
Any other ideas?

It sounds like there’s an issue with Safari not launching on your iPad or it’s not loading webpages since updating iOS.
If the issue is related to launching Safari, try restoring the iPad as shown in the article below.

If Safari launches normally and the issue is related to all webpages not loading and other apps not accessing the Internet, try troubleshooting the Wi-Fi connection as shown here:

Shouldn't be a problem if your Mac can run Mavericks > OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
As for Safari. When you say not responding, do you mean it won't open a window, or it won't load websites, or it won't launch at all?
The more details you provide, the easier to help you.

If you follow Bob's instructions.. allow it to cool down.. maybe leave it off overnight.. if the disk fails to start when you power on.. or listen carefully and hear if the disk is failing to spin up properly then you have either dead drive or dead supply.
Is it in warranty or applecare, let apple replace it?
If it is out of applecare even, open it and replace the disk.
How old is the TC? What model from the rubber mat A1xxx? What size disk?
Certain drives are becoming unreliable.. The WD black in Gen2, The Samsung Spinpoint in Gen3 and WD green in Gen3 and Gen4 are none of them great drives.
Out of warranty do the job yourself.. there is plenty of stuff about drive upgrades for the TC.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

You have multiple copies of PACE installed. It isn't entirely clear what this software does, it is a part of DRM with certain software.
You have versions for 10.4 and 10.6 installed as kernel extensions. This is where the OS communicates with the hardware. It can effect the entire OS.
Ideally you would remove the ones that are not required, but I don't know how to tell which versions you need. Some apps will fail to run without it - but it may also be left over junk from apps you no longer use!
I would reboot into Safe mode to see if the Mac runs better with all the third party extensions & startup items disabled.
Bear in mind that safe mode disables many Apple extensions so don't be surprised if graphics are slow or if some features don't work. Test as much as you can.

Intego has a ridiculous number of background jobs that are failing [invalid]. Frankly I would remove that software, I don't think it is needed. At the very least check that it is upto date & supported on 10.10. This is also at the system level, so the OS could be effected by it. Use Intego's instructions for removing it (ideally they have an uninstaller).
Wacom's tablet driver, TechToolPro & the NAS Power software from Buffalo should also be checked for updates & 10.10 compatibility.
Preference panes can also be system wide - ensure the listed ones are up to date. Also check the items that are opening on login. They can make your account unstable. You can login holding shift to disable theses items temporarily - it can indicate if they are part of your issue.

Firefox is constantly crashing when I am in the Pogo Games app - it even crashed when I was on live c hat with a Pogo helper - this is SO frustrating - all I see lately is the (not responding) message - please help!!!!

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. A couple of shots in the dark here.
Try this, start in safe mode and see if it will go. Power it off, power it on holding the shift key, continue to hold the key till you see a progress BAR, then release and see if it will finish booting. If it does login see if thigs work, then log out and try booting normally. (NOTE that this takes considerably longer,be patient)
Another thing you can try is powering it up holding the OPTION key and see if the start up manager brings your HD up on the screen, if it does click on that and see.
