Latency-A given WAN link should not impose latencies greater than 100 ms. The AP sends heartbeat messages to the WLC once every thirty seconds. If a heartbeat response is missed, the AP sends five successive heartbeats (one per second) to determine whether connectivity still exists. If connectivity is lost, the H-REAP AP switches to standalone mode. The AP itself is relatively delay tolerant. However, at the client, timers associated with authentication are sensitive to link delay, and thus a constraint of < 100 ms is required. Otherwise, the client can timeout waiting to authenticate, which can cause other unpredictable behaviors, such as looping.
So which is correct? one Cisco AS engineer told me that with WLC6.0, delay can be 300ms. WLC prior to 6.0 is 100ms. But i can't find any documentation on this.

Don't qoute me on this, but I think in 5.x is where the 100ms latency was increased to 300ms.
The 4.1 deployment guide is accurate, for 4.1. It should not be greater than 100ms. The HREAP Deployment Guide that I found, is written for 5.1, and it mentions 300ms.

    I've been given a fantastic "opportunity" by my boss to use our existing wireless infrastructure to provide internet access to potentially upto 2000 VIP guests arriving with BYOD devices, in a very densely populated area for a 3 day event. We are talking an area of approx 200m x 15m. Think of it as an awards ceremony/concert. The solution will also be mobile so we will be using internet breakout from different telcos as it will move to approx 20 countries. The area is also incredibly densely populated with other wifi APs. I did a brief site survey and AirMagnet could detect over 2500 other 'rogue' APs from where I was stood! I hope CleanAir works!
    We need a simple authentication method for them to connect with zero admin from our side. We don't want to just offer up a rolling daily PSK as that's a bit amateur and we don't really want the VIP guests sharing the PSK with others during their stay. Ideally they could self-provision by providing an email address.
    I know the WLC can handle webauth for local users but I don't think it scales very well. ie I don't think I can offer the account to several hundred people.
    Cisco ISE looks a very expansive (and expensive) product but I don't think we need all it's capabilities (do I?). It would be nice to just ask a potential user for their email address and grant them access and email them next year. I've seen Cisco NAC but that looks over the top too for just guest users who will only be accessing a shared internet connection.
    I've seen 3rd party supposed software solutions from Kiosk Antamedia etc do they work with Cisco Enterprise WLC solutions?
    We'd like to limit users to a certain (low) bandwidth and block (say) torrent traffic to keep the general user experience worthwhile.
    Does anybody have any case study documents or experience of such a project? As well as the authentication it's how well the APs will handle the dense potential number of clients trying to connect in such a confined space. 
    Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated from the knowledgeable community.

    We are having WLC 5508 model with software version running 7.4.121.0. AP Models are AIR-CAP2602I.
    Normally our WAN links are good even while the issue pertains. We are connected to remote offices over ipsec site to site vpn for WAN. The link latency in WLC between the AP and the controller shows  <1ms.
    currently the Guest network is using WPA2-PSK auth given in the controller. we are trying to find a option to make the Guest wireless auth local to the office, and see if this solves the problem.

  • E3200 internet speed problem

    I've just replace my router from WRT320 to E3200, because I've upgrade my internet speed from 100M to 300M.
    But the speed test just show about 90M when using E3200, but if I plug direct without using E3200, the speed is up to 280M. For the firmware, I've tried 1.0.01, 1.0.02 and 1.0.03 aswell. Did anyone got a solution on that?

    If you can change the Ethernet cable through which you are connecting the computer.. As well as update the drivers of the LAN card. For updating the drivers of the LAN card follow the steps:
    # Click on Start --> on the search box type "devmgmt.msc" and click Ok...
    # Device manager window will appear and in that check for the Wired adapter.. Right-click on the name of the Adapter that you want to install and click Update Driver Software…
    # A window will appear asking “How do you want to search for the driver software?".. Click “Automatic Update"..
    # It will automatically update find the latest drivers and will update it...

  • Latest display driver not working on Satellite A660-11M

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to install the latest display driver downloaded from toshiba drivers section.
    When i have downloaded them i started the installation but it doesn't run. I have tryed to instal "as administrator" i have tryed to install without the user account control but nothing to do.
    I have tryed to install lauching every single file like "tinstallwb" "tinstall" and "setup.exe". The last one says that it can't recognize the hardware.
    I have alway installed toshiba driver only. I have windows 764 bit home premium.
    P.S.
    I have already installed the new version of the bios(1.8)
    Could anyone help me?

    I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum. Anyway, i need to get my hands on the 320M driver for Windows XP. I do not have the Snow Leopard disc, so it's kinda hard to get my hands on it. I have a MacBook White 13inch (a newer model is suppose) with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB 1033MHz RAM, 250GB HDD, GeForce 320M, Snow Leopard 1.0.6.4. - In DXDIAG, it says MacBook7,1 if that helps. This is a school computer i got, and we are allowed to install Windows on them, except the school won't give support for Windows. I found a link to a XP driver on the forum but it's down.
    If anyone is kind to help me i would appreciate it.

  • Nvidia Driver Update for MSi Gt 683

    Hello Fellows;
    I own a MSi GT683-244R notebook.
    I received a Beta key for testing the game Battlefield 3 but when I try to start the game they said that the Nvidia Driver is a old version and I need the latest one. I went to Nvidia web page to try to update my driver and I saw that my notebook from MSI is not supported, I need to download from MSI Website. On MSI driver page (http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT683.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win7%2064) the driver version is 268.12 and on Nvidia driver page (http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us) the lastest certified is 280.26.
    So, my question is... when MSI will launch the latest driver for our notebook???
    GT is a gaming notebook series, so we need the latest driver, please MSI, update it for us.

    You cannot install any video drivers outside of the live update. Nvidia released a beta driver specifically for the Battlefield 3 beta that has been released. because its not available through the live update, you cannot install it on the MSI notebooks.

    Since we've upgraded the 4402 (from 4-2-176-0) to 7.0.235.3 many client facing very high latency.
    We're having 12 x 1142 APs and they are connected in local mode to WLC.
    Before the upgrade performance was good. Now, when I ping from LAN to WLAN clients it takes from 0.1ms - 20s.

    I recently deployed CM8 cluster in Pakistan but I also have branch offices over the globe. Now I'm ready to deploy Unity voice mail but I'm not sure where should I place Unity server. The 90% of voice mail users reside in US so I'm planning to place Unity server in USA. I've average 300ms latency b/w US office and PK office. Now the question is what kind of problems I might face in such huge latency? and any other suggestions regarding design?

    I'm not too sure if the workaround proposed below will work or not. But it seems worth a shot:
    Create a new window when you get the invoke event. Find your desired screen's bounds by going through the static array Screen.screens. Assign that bounds to your newly created window.

  • BT Home Problem - High Latency

    I have been having some problems ever since i switched to BT really.
    I was previously with VirginMedia but left due to their abysmal services... The broadband, however, was faultless.
    But now, with BT i'm having a problem playing online games.
    I start off with a latency of roughly 200ms (previously with old connection i'd never go above 70ms). This will gradually rise up to 300ms before spiking at 700-800ms, then disconnecting me and losing my broadband signal for 3-4mins.
    I can counteract this error by rebooting my router (HomeHub) in which case the latency will drop down to around 100ms - but i surely shouldn't have to be doing this every day. Sometimes twice a day.
    The PC is high spec and as mentioned, was previously fine.
    The same thing happens whether the connection is wireless OR wired.
    Any help, much appreciated!!

    Dependant on which type of BT Service you are on ADSL ADSL2+ etc. 
    The BT Homehub does not like to many fragmented packets so this link to a previous thread might help.

  • H-REAP/Flexconnect Voice 100Ms Limitation

    In the H-Reap Design and Deployment Guide, there is a limitation specified around using H-Reap with voice as follows:
    "Roundtrip latency must not exceed 300 milliseconds (ms) for data and 100 ms for voice and data between the access point and the controller, and CAPWAP control packets must be prioritized over all other traffic."
    I can't find any explanation of why this limitation is defined.
    Is it related to CAPWAP control traffic?
    Does it apply only to centrally switched voice traffic, or also to locally switched traffic?
    Does anyone have any more detail on why this limit exists?
    Does it only apply to Cisco voice handsets (or other clients like Skype, Lync etc.)

    Stephen, thanks for the response, but it still doesn't quite make sense top me.
    Why should the actual traffic type (which is being switched locally at the AP end of things) determine the difference in latency recommendation?
    Whether the traffic is voice or data makes no real difference to the control traffic that passes between the AP and WLC?
    The only think I can think of is perhaps something around roaming for voice clients which may generate control traffic if you didn't have H-REAP groups defined?
    I understand the over-riding latency limit for the CAPWAP traffic between an AP & WLC (300mS), but why should that latency requirement be any more stringent for voice traffic, when the voice traffic is switched locally and won't hit the link between the AP & WLC?

    As long as your connection between the remote site and the WLC is less than 100ms then you can do HREAP. Else centralized location
    Here are some notes:
    Hybrid REAP Guidelines
    Keep these guidelines in mind when using hybrid REAP:
    •A hybrid-REAP access point can be deployed with either a static IP address or a DHCP address. In the case of DHCP, a DHCP server must be available locally and must be able to provide the IP address for the access point at bootup.
    •Hybrid REAP supports a 500-byte maximum transmission unit (MTU) WAN link at minimum.
    •Roundtrip latency must not exceed 100 milliseconds (ms) between the access point and the controller, and LWAPP control packets must be prioritized over all other traffic.
    •The controller can send multicast packets in the form of unicast or multicast packets to the access point. In hybrid-REAP mode, the access point receives multicast packets only in unicast form.
    •Hybrid REAP supports CCKM full authentication but not CCKM fast roaming.
    •Hybrid REAP supports a 1-1 network address translation (NAT) configuration. It also supports port address translation (PAT) for all features except true multicast. Multicast is supported across NAT boundaries when configured using the Unicast option.
    •VPN, IPSec, L2TP, PPTP, Fortress authentication, and Cranite authentication are supported for locally switched traffic, provided that these security types are accessible locally at the access point.

  • Communication between APs and controlleurs under 100ms

    I heard from a Cisco representative that communication between the APs and the controlleur(s) should be less than 100ms. Did anyone experienced problems by not respecting that restriction?
    This restriction would have an impact on our design. Originaly we were planning to host the controlleurs as well as the WCS on our datacenter and have the APs communicate with the controlleurs/WCS via WAN. We would like to avoid having a controlleur for each site since the sites won't need more than 5-6 APs each...

    Have a look at the specs in this H-Reap design guide. It may help explain this restriction and the effect it will have on the "Wireless Rollout";
    H-REAP WAN Considerations
    Because the H-REAP has been designed specifically to operate across WAN links, it has been optimized for such installations. Though H-REAP is flexible when it comes to these remote network design scenarios, there are still a few guidelines that need to be honored when architecting a network with H-REAP functionality.
    H-REAPs may not be placed across WAN links any slower than 128 kbps.
    Roundtrip latencies between H-REAP and the controller may not exceed 100 ms.
    Between the access point and the controller, a minimum of a 500 byte MTU is supported.
    In order to ensure that support for this stated latency limitation is in place, it is strongly recommended that between the access point and controller, priority be configured in the intermediary infrastructure to elevate LWAPP control (UDP port 12223) to the highest priority queue available. Without priority placed on LWAPP control, spikes in other network traffic will very likely cause H-REAP access points to frequently shift from connected to Standalone modes as WAN link congestion prevents access point/controller messages (and keep-alives) from being delivered.
    Frequent H-REAP flapping causes serious connectivity issues. Without proper network prioritization in place, it may be prudent to place controllers at remote sites to ensure consistent and stable wireless access.
    Note: Whether H-REAP is configured to tunnel client traffic back to the controller or not, the LWAPP data path is used to forward all 802.11 client probes and authentication/association requests, RRM neighbor messages, and EAP and web authentication requests back to the controller. As such, ensure that LWAPP data (UDP port 12222) is not blocked anywhere between the access point and controller.

    Ok well after 2 months of getting BT Infinity installed, (due to admin problems), all is working great. Getting Bandwidth of about 30Mbs great.
    The problem is online gaming, you need split second timing to play the game, so that means low latency.
    Over 2 weeks or so its got worse and worse, 150ms and above it is un-playable online. I am getting on average about 250-300ms at night, gaming.
    On my old adsl wired bt broadband I was getting on average 45ms. This was on my old system.
    I think the system is trying to optimise for maximum bandwidth, and therefore comprimising on latency.
    There must be a way technically to optimise for low latency at the expense of bandwidth.
    I have raised and call and managed to fight my way through to Tier 2 support, (at least they understand the terms I am using yay). There are other gamers with the same problem, and there is an investingation this week.
    If there is no solutions then its back to ADSL wired 3Mbs broadband for me but at least I will get 50ms latency.
    Will keep you posted, this will be a big blow to BT Infinity for online gamers if they cant fix it

    I had Infinity installed on Friday (I'm on the LNADK exchange) and below is the ping/jitter test that I did about 10 minutes ago.

  • Is it possible to use a 5500 WLC and a 2500 WLC as failover?

    I am curious to know if there are any technical issues with this design. The 5500 WLC would be the primary and 2500 WLC would be the secondary. The only need for the secondary would be in the event of failure of the primary, and support needs when doing maintenance such as code upgrades.
    We would use the same version of code on each controller and apply the necessary amount of AP licenses on each. The controllers would have identical configurations and host multiple SSID's, including offering guest services. Does the 2500 support guest network services?

    Yeah, believe the 2500 only does multicast-multicast mode.  Which isn't that big of a deal usually.  MM being the preferred method.
    the 2504 also has that 300M backplane limitation.  SO if you are going to use the 2504 I would recommend HREAP so you don't have to worry about that.
