Latest backup date can't be found

Hello.
Since a few day, my Time Machine icon in the menubar won't give me the latest backup date ! I've the same problem in the system preferences. The system shows me only two dashes.
It was before I update to 10.5.3, and the update didn't do anything.
Thanks for your help.
J-B
PS : please excuse me for my bad English, I'm French.

Open your home folder, then double-click "Library". From there, double click "Preferences".
In there, there should be a com.apple.timemachine.plist file.
Move that to your Desktop as well as the one located at MacHD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.timemachine.plist (make SURE you know which is which.)
Then restart.
Good luck!

  • Error Dialogue: "Time Machine Backup Disk Can't be Found"

    Hello -
I am trying to "Enter Time Machine" (which is on a Time Capsule); but when I try this, I am met by the error message "Your Time Machine Backup Disk Can't be Found" with the option given to "Set up My Time Machine".
Needless to say, my Time Machine has been set up for months. When I look in the preferences, it clearly shows the disk I'm connected to (here's a screenshot of the error dialogue alongside my Time Machine preferences: http://cl.ly/1HGk).
Any idea what the best course of action is here.
ADDITIONAL NOTE: notice from the screenshot that Time Machine thinks the earliest backup is only 1 day prior. This is also strange as I have said I've had Time Machine working on this Time Capsule for months. I called Apple about this and was told that a software update had gone out yesterday that reformatted the drives and started the backups all over again. While completely fishy - I don't remember agreeing to any software update dialogue about erasing my Time Capsule - I took them at their word. Not sure if this is related, but thought I should mention it.
    Thanks Crew!

The +sparse bundle+ containing your backups may be corrupted. Repair it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there.

That's the first I've heard of that. They may have been referring to the +Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0+ update several weeks ago, that some folks got but others didn't. If it finds a problem, it sends the message in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4076 The existing sparse bundle is renamed and locked, and a new one made.

Wow, I feel really stupid. I spent a couple of days trying to troubleshoot this problem.
    1. Open TM prefs.
    2. Click "Select Disk..."
    3. Select "None" and apply changes.
    4. Click "Select Disk..." Select your disk and apply changes.

  • I need to restore my Ipad from the iCloud, but not from the latest backup.  Can I restore from a previous date?  If so How?

I went yesterday to the Albany, NY apple store genius bar with a sound issue on the Ipad.  After 2 hours the "genius" told me that
they tried wiping my  Ipad clean, but not to worry that first everything was saved in the cloud.  I was told I had to reload all
purchased Apps and would be no charge and would take some time.  Due to the late hour I said I'd do it at home.  I did not do
it last night.  This morning I open the Ipad  to find nothing in it....no contacts,  no notes....nothing.  I rushed back to the apple
store and was told that apparently last night a backup took place and the Icloud backed up a clean Ipad....no info.  This is a
huge problem.  Apple personel simply said sorry that the "genius" should have known better.   Attempts to restore seems to
only go back to the last backup which of course is blank.  Now my question is .....is it possible somehow with the cloud from a
previous date like you can with  a PC?

  • Restore to factory, failed backups, files can't be found etc etc - Win7?

    Multiple probs...
have got to the point that wondering if there is an iTunes/Win7 issue...
    Apple product: iPhone 3Gs 32GB*
    Computer OS: Win7
+* NB: Throughout all of these issues iTunes repeatedly showed capacity as only 4GB, then at some point would switch to partially showing correct capacity (ie. had diff information between.. capacity shown in summary details, and that shown in used/free space status bar), OR would switch to fully showing correct capacity info (ie. summary details and used/free status bar info would agree).+
    *ISSUE 1*
Orig issue - stopped being able to add music/video. Error message something like found folder where expected file.
    *ISSUE 2*
Backed up iPhone (backup appeared successful.
Restored phone to factory settings (appeared successful)
Tried to restore backup > iTunes error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed" *NB: Searched computer, found the location that iTunes saves backup, files ARE there, and checked all photos and contacts are there (just in format that will need to translate if need to access via non-iTunes means)*
    *ISSUE 3*
(Considered that might have been something wrong with my orig files, I decided to test with newly reset iPhone.)
Set up as new phone (as no choice).
Set up new music and added to phone (appeared successful; music visible on phone).
Repeated with more music; then started to get error message (for tracks that had orig been added successfully "The iPhone cannot be synced. The required file could not be found"
    *ISSUE 4*
Tried to reset again to factory.
Had to use the Hard Reset method (simultaneously hold power button & home button, til slide bar for power off. Powered off. With iTunes running, hold down home button as plug into computer. iTunes recognises, asks if wish to reset device. Say yes, proceed through entire process, including entering simcard lock code, looks successful. Phone then has the "connect to iTunes"image.
Did this repeatedly without success (always returned to be frozen on the connect to iTunes image. Tried all sorts of combinations - unplugging, rebooting pc, nothing worked... once phone got to this point every time it was plugged in iTunes froze, as soon as unplugged iTunes fully functional. Considered that iTunes might be processing slowly, so searched again... found webpage said to "Keep your device connected until the Connect to iTunes screen goes away or you see iPhone is activated." ref http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
So repeated factory restore, and at end left phone connected overnight and still no change (still displaying connect to iTunes image). In morning, still no progress (still showing connect to iTunes image).
    *ISSUE 5*
Happened to unplug phone, and replug into computer (not holding down home button or anything). iTunes then finally recognised phone. However, when tried to restore backup repeatedly still get error message "iTunes could not... because the backup session failed"
So unless set up as new phone again, am stuck.
    Back to ISSUE 2/3 status.
Expect that if go ahead with setting up as new phone again, will not be able to backup phone successfully, and at some stage will stop being able to add music etc.
    *ISSUE 6*
Have tried to go ahead with setting up new phone. Still no success.
Multiple error messages, most recent being
"The iPhone X cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file."
Are there known problems with Windows 7? Or is this apple software issue? Apple hardware?<</div>
At this stage I no longer have a phone (it my phone for everywhere), or sanity buster for 15-20 hours/week commuting. Not particularly comfortable with that...

    Hi, thanks for your feedback.
No. None of music in iTunes synced. By "none of them showing probs"... Meant that iTunes can see all of those files, so no prob of that type; HOWEVER those files cannot be synced to iPhone. This is current status. Previously files HAD synced to iPhone.
Ie one of first things that did was to reset all to ensure that working with only small test sample to minimize room for corrupted files.
So situation is phone reset to factory; newly installed iTunes on new laptop, with new iPhone profile. In iTunes only small number of music files, that I've newly added to reduce chance that those files corrupted.
From all that reading, and from discussions having with few fellow developers/analysts at work, thoughts are that iTunes not playing nice with 62bit Win7.
Does anyone have contact with apple to have confirmed?
There are number threads even just in this forum, reflecting same thoughts
    Cheers

  • HT201250 "Your Time Machine Backup Disk can't be found"  ? Disk is attached and running, apparently smoothly.

I am getting this message that my backup disk cannot be found. However, it was working fine just yesterday and there is no indication that the disk itself has crashed. It appears to be running as usual. Any suggestions about how to get my iMac to "find" my lost Time Mache disk will be appreciated.

Have you tried restarting your computer and disk?

  • Your Time Machine backup disk can't be found.

I clicked set up/select disk/Set up Time Capsule and got the notification that the Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport Wireless devices.....the wireless devise is plugged in and in range (or I presume so as the internet connection is working and the AirPort is connected.....).......any suggestions on next steps appreciated.
    Some contextual info:
I am on Snow Leopard with an Apple Time Capsule
last back up was on 30th July (which was the day we left to go on holiday for 4 wks, when I took the recommended action of shutting down)
Time machne button is clicked to on

maybe your TC hiccupped a bit on repower.
    First Aid
    Power off of the TC
Power off all other network participants
Repower the TC and give it a minute or two to run up completely till the green light is definitively on.
Rejoin the other network participants one after the other, giving each device a little time to establish all connections.
If that doesnt fix your hustle, report back with any error message and eventually any information about your setup you think it may be useful.
    Good Luck - Lupunus

  • Disk can't be found

This morning I saw the Time Machine icon in the menu bar it had an exclamation mark. So I click on the icon and a message appear saying: "Your Time Machine backup disk can’t be found."
I open a Finder window and click on Shared>Time Capsule>Data and there is Spare Disk Image Bundle and it has 469.16 GB on it.
Now what? Do I have to start all over again with a new backup? Is there a way for Time Machine to use this file again?
    Blue skies!

See if you can repair the backups, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time machine has stopped working - 'the backup volume could not be found'

i'm not sure what happened, but my macbook pro hasn't been able to backup to my time machine for the past few weeks. i get a 'delayed' message, then in time machine prefs it says 'the backup volume could not be found.' i can manually mount the backup image, but it still won't backup. my wife's 12" powerbook is backing up perfectly. we both have 10.5.4. i was having the problem before the 7.3.2 firmware update, so that doesn't seem to be the cause. has this happened to anyone else? could my computer somehow lost track if the backup? is there prefs that can be trashed? i don't mind losing my old backups if i need to start over, but i can't figure out how to force it to backup because i keep getting the 'backup volume can't be found' no matter what i do.
my setup: dsl modem into time machine / my macbook pro, my wife's powermac 12", and our apple tv are the only clients.

There is a Time Machine preferences file at
    <your startup drive root>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Note: This is be main Library folder, not the one in your user folder.
You might try moving that to the Desktop so that the system creates a new one.

  • Not enough space on my new SSD drive to import my data from time machine backup, how can I import my latest backup minus some big files?

I just got a new 256GB SSD drive for my mac, I want to import my data from time machine backup, but its larger than 256GB since it used to be on my old optical drive. How can I import my latest backup keeping out some big files on the external drive?

    Hello Salemr,
When you restore from a Time Machine back up, you can tell it to not transfer folders like Desktop, Documents. Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures and Public. Take a look at the article below for the steps to restore from your back up.

I want to restore my data after my pad was reset, but the latest backup was 5 months back. What can I do?

There is nothing that you can do. If you don't have a more recent backup, you can't magically create a current backup now. You can use the 5 month old backup, or simply start all over again. You can download most of your purchased content again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you used to make the purchases.

  • Time Machine HD not showing latest backup, can't restore system

Please forgive the short story, but I'll give as many details as I can:
Last night I successfully installed XP on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. I decided to do the same to my iMac (21.5" 2010 Version). I used Boot Camp to initiate the partition process to create my Windows partition. It told me that I had files that couldn't be moved and I would have to:
    1. Backup my startup disk (the main and only internal hard drive)
    2. Reformat the hard drive I want to create the Windows partition on
    3. Restore from the backup
    4. Use Boot Camp to create the new partition
I completely understand why I have to do this. There's files spread physically all over the drive, and backing up and restoring is the free alternative to defragging. So I use Time Machine to back up my internal drive to an external drive. The total transfer was about 330 GB. I had to leave for about three hours and left it to do its thing. When I came back, the iMac had restarted and was waiting for my password to log on. I did so and looked in Time Machine and saw that the next back was scheduled for 10:37 pm. It was set to backup every hour. Simple math tells me the last backup - the one I had left for three hours - had finished at 9:37 pm. And that made perfect sense.
I then boot the iMac from the OSX disk and use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the main drive. I did this without any qualms since I was sure the backup worked. It wiped and reformatted my drive and I go to Time Machine to restore and.......
    NO BACKUP FILES ARE FOUND
The external was spinning. I could hear it doing something. So I decided to try it manually in Disk Utility. In selecting the source of the restore Image, I navigate through the external and find, not a backup file, but a ".inProgress" file. I'm guessing that the initial backup +did not+ complete correctly and I've now just lost all of my data.
Can anyone please tell me that I'm wrong?

Unless you have your Mac set to automatically log you off after a period of inactivity, your Mac should have been as you left it. It does not shut down, restart, or log you off after completing a backup.
Could there have been a power failure?
I'm guessing that the initial backup +did not+ complete
    That seems likely.
and I've now just lost all of my data.
    Maybe, maybe not.
Just to be sure, check the backup drive via the Finder. Be +*very careful+* using the Finder on your backups; if you accidentally move, change, or delete anything, they can be corrupted.
There should be a single Backups.backupdb folder at the top level, containing a single folder named for your Mac.
Inside that should be a folder for each backup, named with the date and time; plus a "latest" alias, plus the in.Progress file (it's actually a "package").
If there are any named, dated folders, those are completed backups; you can restore your entire system from them. See #14 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If not, select the "in.Progress" file and see how large it is, via +Get Info.+ That may take a while; the larger it is, the more of your data is there. If it's over about 6 GB (your system folders), right-click it and select +Show Package Contents.+ It should contain the same folder structure as your internal HD; go all the way to the bottom and see how much is actually there (some of the items toward the end may be empty).
If it looks like most everything is there, you may be able to recover most of it, by drag and drop.
If not, +*stop using your internal HD.+* Unless you did a +Secure Erase,+ your stuff is still on the internal disk, and most should be recoverable, but it won't be quick or easy. See [Data Recovery|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Recover.html].
    Keep us posted.

  • I need to recover deleted data from my iPhone 4S but don't have a recent backup. I thought by pressing sync on my macbook this would back up-but I was wrong. There are no backups on my macbook and the latest backup on iCloud was Jan 2012. Please help

I need to recover deleted data from my iPhone 4S but don't have a recent backup. I thought by pressing sync on my macbook this would back up…but I was wrong. There are no backups on my macbook and the latest backup on iCloud was Jan 2012. My mum died in May and I had lots of text messages that I wanted to keep. I really want to get them back. Is there any way at all I can get that deleted data from the phone?

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

The only option is to wipe the device clean and restore it to factory settings.  Hope you have a backup.
Follow the instructions in  iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137 to restore the device to factory settings.
Once you have setup the device as a new one, you can then sync it back with your iTunes account and all your music, apps, contacts and any other content sync'ed with iTunes will be loaded on the device. Any content that is stored only on the device and not sync'ed with iTunes, like app logins or data, will be lost during this process. Be forewarned that this is a long process and can take a couple of hours or more to complete. This can be painful, but it is necessarily so to prevent users from working around the security settings. After the restore is complete, you can setup a new Restrictions passcode. Make a note of the passcode to avoid this situation in future.

Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.

(If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
