  • La Cie Internal DVD Burner and A Power Mac G4

    A stupid situation here.....
I just bought & installed the La Cie internal Lightscribe DVD burner to replace the Pioneer DVD burner which wore out. ( Installed into a Power Mac G4 - mirror drive door version.)
It works except it seems that the tray on the La Cie burner is about 1/8" larger than the opening on the Mac chassis. So - unless you leave the access panel of the G4 down and leave the housing of the bays faced out, the tray won't open.
Has anyone else had this issue???? I've tried installing in both bays w/out luck. La Cie claims it is compatible. (techically it is but it seems they forgot about the physical world here.)
Anyone know a good place to get a Pioneer drive?

Hi, skokiejoe, and welcome to the Discussions, neighbor!
You're not alone with this issue; lots of folks have asked the same question here.
There's a plate attached to the front of the tray which needs to be removed before it will fit properly. Remove the drive, open the drive tray manually by inserting a paperclip into the tiny hole on the face of the drive and pushing on it until the tray ejects part way. Turn the drive upside down, grasping it in both hands and unlatching the two clips on the bottom of the tray with your thumbs, popping the plate off. Save the plate for possible future use and reinstall the drive.

  • Can anyone suggest a reliable dvd burning app for a mac book pro without the idvd app

I recently purchased a Mac Book Pro and find that it has,nt a facility to burn home movies fro imovie. After contacting apple they tell me to purchase a third party dvd burning app, After a little research on the app,s available from the app store the reviews are not good. Has anyone found a reliable app that will do the job,.

Toast is exellent but is no substitute for iDVD - but then nothing really is.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

  • New DVD-R Drive for Power Mac G5

My DVD-R drive is dead. Does anyone know if I need a SATA Drive and if I have any limitations?

You can use any PATA optical drive for your G5.
Parallel ATA has a wide cable attached to it, SATA is a much smaller cable.
I successfully replaced mine with a drive from LaCie (Samsung)
    How to make the swop is described in detail in this document by Apple;
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/PMG5OpticalDriveDIY.pdf
Read the whole manual before you start. It really has all the answers.
    More document for your G5 is here;
    http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/powermac/
Remember to swop the front of the tray. Take care when removing it from your original drive. It is attached using strong two-sided tape. Use a large flat screwdriver or a knife and gently twist it between the tray and the front cover.
If you break the cover from your original drive, making it useless, the new drive will have no problem opening and closing as long as you remove the cover of your new drive.
When removing the cover that comes with your new drive gently pull from the bottom of the tray. It is just clicked in place.
No other modification will be required on your new drive.
Don´t be alarmed if your new drive is longer or shorter than the original drive your are replacing. It will fit and it will work.

  • Is a high definition DVD burner available for Mac's?

I have a HD camcorder (Canon XHA1) and am using Final Cut express HD. I have been very disappointed in the results I have obtained when burning my Final Cut projects to a standard DVD.(After finishing my FCE project, I use IDVD to produce a disc image, then burn to a standard 4.7 GB Sony or Verbatim DVD-R) Many of my clients now have blu ray players and high def TV's and want their videos in high definition. Is a high definition burner available for a mac pro so that I can burn high definition discs?

Thanks Tom for the link. However, I noticed when reading through the info about this blu-ray drive that it made no mention of being compatible with Final Cut Express HD or IDVD which is what I am currently using. I had considered upgrading to Final Cut Studio but it sounds like this drive is only compatible when used with Adobe Premiere Pro and Encore CS4. I am no techie, so pardon my ignorance about all this. Is Toast a "replacement" for IDVD? Could I use FCExpress (or FC studio if I upgrade) then burn the DVD using toast? Does Toast have menu templates like IDVD?
If anyone has any experience using this blu-ray drive on their Mac with Final Cut and IDVD or Toast I would appreciate some input on what the exact workflow is and if the whole process has been a positive experience.
Thanks so much for your help!

  • Is there a dvd burner that comes with macs? if not whats a good dvd burner for mac os x?

is there a dvd burner that comes with macs? if not whats a good dvd burner for mac os x?

This may help, but it's an accessory with an extra cost:

This new Superdrive also supports DVD-Audio so you can load more music into it than a CD.

  • Is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for iMac

is there an external cd/dvd burner-player for my imac?

You can simply google for that; I'm sure there'll be plenty - just make sure it specifically states that it is compatible with Mac and the OS version you are running. I've had a LaCie for a number of years; it is self powered with FW port (they no longer make this one unfortunately); here is their non-Bluray option they have now:
    http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10058
(Personally, I prefer self powered instead of bus powered). They also sell Bluray burners.

  • Need new low-end graphics card for Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970)

My Power Mac G5 (PowerPC 970) has recently died I believe due to a bad
ATI RADEON X800 XT MAC EDITION video card.
Reason for thinking its the card, is that the machine was performing its intended tasks for several days even though the monitor was snow.
Having trouble determining a low-end replacement. (I no longer need the enhanced features of the RADEON X800 for this machine.
Much appreciated if someone could suggest a product appropriate for PowerPC 970.
    Thanks!

I also ran into this issue with my dual G5. When I bought it, I didn't get wireless because it was a dedicated desktop on the network, but I'm upgrading and giving it to the kids to use in a room without wired network. Now that wireless would be really nice and it looks like the official solution is:
"Apple Wireless Upgrade Kit for Power Mac G5 Dual or Power Mac G5 Quad MA252G/A"
which is really expensive and difficult to install. But the weird thing is that I do have bluetooth. I wonder if there's just some little doodad I need to connect to get wireless going too, but I can't find any info on the card, and it looks like it's buried on the motherboard behind all the cooling stuff. I'll probably just spring for one of the USB solutions.

  • 168 Pin RAm for Power Mac

Does anyone know if MT8LD864AG-6 168 pin DIMM is compatible with the RAM for Power Mac 8500 120MHz and Power MAc 7200 120 MHz?
Thank you in advance for your advice.
    Robert

    Hi Robert,
The ZIF processor upgrade I have in my Beige G3 MT (300 mHz originally) is a Sonnet G3/500--I wish it were a G4! I installed it when I still had OS9. It stayed in place when I installed Jaguar and, later, Panther.
As Grant mentions, I used a third-party helper program called XPostFacto, "XPF" for short. Installing "unsupported" Panther with XPF was far easier than installing the "supported" Jaguar and the computer is now more stable.
T'was Grant who talked me into trying Panther. Now I can't believe I waited so long! I used an older version of XPF, version 3.1, at Grant's suggestion. V3.1 seems to be the "sweet spot" for installing Panther. Some Beige G3 owners have successfully installed 10.4.x with later version of XPF but more users have reported stability issues than with 10.3.
If you are interested in learning more about the upgrade paths available to the Beige G3, there is a very active forum area here:

    Hope this helps!

  • Optical Fun for Power Mac G5 - Chosing a Burner

    Hi all,
So I have a Power Mac G5 with a burner that is not so great anymore. I burn at 1x for DVDs and on good days, burn a CD at 4x. Time for a new burner you would say. I would agree.
I have a predicament and wondered if anyone suggests a burner to go with. I'm not looking to spend a lot and just want something that would work well and fit nicely.
I found two that might suit my little G5:
    Pioneer
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129007
    LG
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136119
Those two were Best Sellers at New Egg with nice reviews, but nothing on the Mac.
Does anyone have any other suggestions or anything that worked for you?
Has anyone used the brands above?
Thanks for reading and in advance for the help,
    Bryant

Hi. The Pioneer 112D is often recommended in these forums - can't recall any adverse reports. I installed a previous version, the 110D, with no problems - works well.
    The installation instructions are here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0807.pdf
Installation is a bit fiddly, but not difficult. There are two things to check: that the stand-offs (see Figure 8 of the installation instructions) are the right length to line the drive up with the aperture in the G5 casing - and that you remove the plastic bezel with CD, DVD, etc. on it from the front edge of the tray, so it doesn't catch on the edge of the aperture in the G5 casing - discussed here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4443213#4443213
If your current drive is a Pioneer, the stand-offs should be re-usable. If not, they may be able to be adjusted by not screwing them in fully, and then locking the thread with Loctite or similar.
The drive should be recognised in Blue Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > Hardware > Disc Burning (System Profiler). If there are any problems, please post again. Good Luck.

  • DVD burner upgrade for pre 09 MAC Pro?

We have a MAC Pro that we bought in 09. We are a communications/marketing company and I burn a lot of DVD's for commercials and such. The problem is, it takes at least 90 min to burn one full DVD. Can someone recommend a faster burner that we can use? Tech specs say the burner is 18x write. We use DVD -R
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP506   <-- tech specs.
I don't know what version of the OS it is. I can find out if it helps.
    I appreciate any help!

If that is your tech specs, you Mac uses a SATA DVD burner.
Best Mac OS X support would be one that shipped in a Mac Pro.
Good tech support would come from a Mac-centric company like OWC. their offerings are here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/static_pages/Framework.cfm?page=superdrive/sdl_macpro_ 2009.html
"Lightscribe" is a feature for machine-drawing on the label-side of special discs to create a human-readable label. I see it as needless complexity, and a distraction from the main functions required.

  • HT1645 Hello, does anyone know of good DVD burning software for Mac?  I've got two 8 min 25 sec mov files to put on a DVD with title and a menu for the two.  I've tried it with iDVD five times, each time waiting over an hour and then getting an error mess

I have a short film I produced and I need to burn off copies however I am having no end of trouble with finding a simple DVD burning programme.
I tried a few but no luck.  I am trying with mov files and I can't see where the cog is happening.  If anyone has any good and relatively inexpensive solutions, please let me know!
    Thanks so much!
    Cheers

    Welcome to the forums.
If you'd like to continue trying with iDVD, one of Apple's resources shows HT 1645 to be an encoding error (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1645), so I would suggest starting a new iDVD project and set the iDVD Preferences to make sure they match to your project.  In particular, you should be using the Pro encoding setting or Best Performance for projects with a total length under an hour (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5417).
Roxio Toast is an excellent burning tool and part of my work flow after I've used iDVD to create a disk image.  Toast will not have the nice iDVD menus, but can do many other tasks besides DVD creation.  (Disk images can help in the DVD creation process -- here's one of many discussions:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/15469221#15469221)

  • Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer & Power Mac G5

For some reason my G5 want read a Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer disc that my friend burnt for me. I put the disc in, and the computer just spits it back out at me. Is this normal? What can I do? I got my G5 in 2004 can newer G5s read Dual layers? My friend made it on a Power Book so I dont see why I cant read the disc.

Yes, they are relatively new. For more on the history of DVD, see this page:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I typically buy double sided DVD-R disks to burn more than 4.7 GB of data. These you flip over when you want more content than can fit on one side of a DVD. Alas you have to split up the content. Depending on the type of content this can be done by segmenting an image, or compressing the data itself and segmenting a compressed file. What's odd is that some disks which appear on the surface to be dual layer because of their single sided capacity, such as the Tiger installation DVD, are in fact readable by all DVD drives that are on Macs, whereas the commercial DVD+R DL is not. I don't know the difference between commercial and consumer grade Dual Layer disks, but there does appear to be one which makes them readable on Commercial grade whereas Consumer is not on older DVD players.
