Latest Google Maps Mobile finds location without GPS

... but not for iPhone. I have installed the latest version of Google Maps Mobile on my Blackberry and the location services are pretty cool. The article is here: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/0,1000000085,39291153,00.htm
Google Maps Mobile with My Location info can be found at http://www.google.com/gmm/mylocation.html?hl=en
When can we get this on the iPhone???

Not quite. I believe iTunes checks for a new version of the iPhone sw on a weekly basis - or one week after the last automatic or forced "check for update." The timeframe does not correspond to an expected update.
It does, though there have been several times when my automatic update set itself to the day of a software release. I think they do include the release date in the "auto update" when they have a firm one set.

  • Find location without GPS function

    Can the user have their location detected via a WAP site without the use of GPS? In the case of search for nearby locations via a directory service on WAP without GPS functionality (when user cannot download app version).
    Thanks!

    This cannot be done directly. Phones with GPS will have the 'network positioning' feature which helps to obtain a GPS fix if satellite signals are poor, but I'm pretty sure it can't be used as standalone location method.
    Any phone could theoretically know its approximate location based on which network base-station it is connected to (this is how network positioning works in GPS phones), but there is no software that I know of to put this information to use in the way you suggest.

    We certainly want to make sure you get the most out of the GPS, wplaxico! Was this tested primarily outdoors? When did this begin? Any other recent apps of updates installed when this started?

  • Centro + Google maps with My Location?

    Hi,
    Does anyone has any news about that?
    http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/8094/palm-to-support-google-maps-my-location-after-all/
    gms.
    Post relates to: Centro (Sprint)

    I had a Centro with firmware version 1.05 and Google maps version 1.2.0.9 (which does not have the My Location feature on the menu).  I updated to firmware version 1.07 and Google maps 2.0.2, but My Location feature would not work and resulted in error message "The My Location feature is not available for this device.  It is available for Palm Centro phones."   I worked for an hour with Palm support doing a hard reset and reloading all software and it would still not work.  They said their own test Centro phone was having the same problem.  They finally told me I need a phone with firmware version 1.08.  The Sprint Store had a demo Centro with firmware version 1.08, and the My Location feature was working on it.  I have the Sprint Total Equipment Protection plan on the phone, so Sprint provided me with a replacement phone that came with firmware version 1.07 (!) and Google maps 1.2.0.9.  I updated to Google maps 2.0.2 and finally My Location feature works!  So I guess you don't really need firmware version 1.08, but some Centro phones work and some don't with firmware version 1.07.

  • Google map for store locator.

    Is it possible to have the Google map remain on the page while doing a search for a store, company etc.? I'd noticed that it only shows up after you type in a State etc. The space where the map displays looks empty until the map shows up.

    Hi there,
    Yes, Google has changed things and you now don't need an API key.  The good old boys at Kiyuco have a later Web App Google Map tutorial here http://kiyuco.com/tutorials/update-maps-to-google-map-api-v3 which explains how to set it up.
    Hope that helps

  • Latest Google Maps Causes Firefox to Crash 100% of the time.

    Here is the crash report. This always happens. Please help provide assistance.
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/08f67257-ceac-464b-b519-94c9c2140326
    dmp

    I produced some steps that got FireFox to crash again at Google Maps. This had a different error, below.
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/20963f7a-2973-478f-a85c-8bec82140326
    Looking at this one, it said that it was fixed by a known bug:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=943511
    That bug says that it is resolved in version 29. I was running version 27. I manually checked for updates (for some reason it did not prompt me?), downloaded and installed version 28. Version 29 is not available. Version 28 crashed at Google Maps as well, though it took a little longer. Version 28's crash is available here:
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/79ded35b-301d-4129-8ff6-c73352140326
    Completely different error.
    I could not get it to crash in safe mode. It slowed down to a snails pace, like it often does right before it crashes, but it stayed up. I rebooted to full mode, updated some plugins and disabled others. Restarted, and went back into Google Maps. It did a lot better than it did earlier in the day, but it did eventually crash. The error is below.
    https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/57a88a26-ae9d-4508-9d33-ae6bd2140326
    Yet another crash, but all of these happen when I go to Google Maps. I'd love to get support, but I don't think I'll be spending any more hours on this. I'll either stop using Google Maps or stop using Firefox if this doesn't go away very soon.

  • InfoWindowOptions question for Google maps mobile project

    I am trying to create mobile project to display database driven locations on map.
    I am getting data through remote call to ColdFusion, perfectly displaying markers on my map. Now, i want to be able to click on Marker and display custom info in InfoWindowOptions from my DB, for example image which has been connected to that location.
    This is the function which loop through ArrayCollection create markers and sets an event listener for them:
    for (var i:int=0; i<locationsCollection.length; i++)
                           var m:Marker = new Marker(new LatLng(locationsCollection[i].latitude, locationsCollection[i].longitude),
                              new MarkerOptions({tooltip:'test',hasShadow:true}));
                           m.addEventListener(MapMouseEvent.CLICK, function(e:Event):void {
                               var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.imchi.info/testimages/"+locationsCollection[i].picture);
                               var imageLoader:Loader = new Loader();
                               imageLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, function(event:Event):void {
                                   var width:Number = 200;
                                   var height:Number = 200;
                                   var options2:InfoWindowOptions = new InfoWindowOptions({
                                       customContent: imageLoader});
                                   m.openInfoWindow(options2);
                               imageLoader.load(request);
                          map.addOverlay(m);
    The problem is that when it comes to locationsCollection[i].picture it fails, and only if i set instead of it name of file for example:
    var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest("http://www.imchi.info/testimages/test.jpg"); it is working.
    What i am doing wrong?

    I'm not entirely sure if there is a default time frame that should be built into the application, but it does seem like a bug to me.

  • Google Maps dowloaded, but don't know how to use it or find what I just downloaded?

    just bought a blackberry curve and know nothing about it. I went to google maps and clicked download, and it finished downloading and now I do not know how to use google maps or find where it is on my phone. How do I find where it is on my phone? (When I finished downloading it asked if I wanted to "run" or something else, I checked the other box - Also, if I go back to google and try to download google maps again it says it was already downloaded on my phone!)
    I do know how to use google maps on a computer, just not on my phone.

    Assuming that it downloaded and installed ok on your Curve, the first step is to find the application icon.  Depending on your theme you're using, you may need to press the menu button to display the full list of applications. Do that by pressing the button to the right of the trackball (with the dots).
    The google maps icon is kind of orange and looks like a little folded map. After you click on that, it's pretty straight forward. Click on the menu button to search for a location and get directions.
    Hope that's not too basic of instructions.  Besides from email, google maps is the thing I use the most.  Verizon cripples the GPS, but the approximate location based on cell towers is still super useful.  Enjoy!

  • Google Maps on 755P Without Connecting To Internet?

    Hi all, new here and have a question...just bought a 755P (Verizon) and was under the (I now know) mistaken impression that the Google Maps feature would work without connection to the internet (and thus no data fees).  I realized it did not have a GPS and thus would not have voice turn by turn directions, but thought at least just the maps would work without a data connection.  Now that I know I was incorrect on that, is there any software I can download/buy that will give me maps without connecting to the Internet?
    Also, my thought is I don't want to spend too much because I could go get a bottom end Garmin type GPS for not much over $100, but I like the idea of having one device, plus being in the phone, I'll always have it with me.
    Any suggestions or ideas welcomed!
    (I want to figure this out in case this requires a data card because I know I'll want to buy a data card to store music and I'm assuming if I need to buy a data card for mapping that the same one could be used for storing music?)

    Welcome to the Palm help forums.
    From what I found you can get an mini SD card for $199.99 with preloaded maps and a GPS unit. Thats over your $99.99 limit.

  • Adding Google Maps to 'location' field

    Has anyone come up with a way to easily link an iCal Event's location to a Google Map? Seems an obvious thing to do.
    I see that Google Calendar has this as a facility but cannot see an iCal plugin that offers a similar function.

    Here is what I do, but I am sure you have already thought about it.
    I go to google maps and find the location, then paste the url and back in ical, in the event, copy it in the url field of that event. Not great, not automatic, but better than nothing, and that helps me when I want to send invites for that event, as the url is embedded, or when I recall that event and just click on the url to immediately open a page in my browser for the map.
    hope this helps

  • HT5622 why does Find My iPhone via iCloud on my iMac use Google maps and not Apple maps?

    when I use Find My iPhone through iCloud on my iMac, the app uses Google maps to display locations. Why? Shouldn't it use Apple maps?

    thanks
    I used Apple maps on my iPhone, iPad and iMac and prefer it over Google maps except for street view (which albeit has an annoying, difficult to use interface). In El Salvador, Apple maps was certainly more accurate than Google maps. I like Apple maps turn-by-turn navigation via my Sonata's sound system, quite nice

  • Google Map Marker Pin at Incorrect Location

    Hi
    Can anyone help regarding why a Google map marker is located off the coast of Africa when I have included the app item location/address details as being in Queensland, Australia?
    It only comes up when a full search is done, when you click the Get Directions links you're taken to the correct map in Google Maps.
    Thanks in advance.

  • E71: Why does Google Maps not use GPS and track my...

    Why is it that Google maps only gives me a GPS signal accurate to 60-2000m. (depending on where I am)
    Nokia Maps 2.0 would follow me down roads and footpaths, but Google maps just gives a rough approximation inside a large circle. My friend had an N95 Black and now an N97, and has testified to the exact same problem.
    If I could get Google Maps to work with my GPS I would probably delete Nokia Maps, as it is otherwise mostly inferior.
    (I've gone through the laborious process to download Maps 3.0 and it is pretty rubbish to be honest - big, bloated with inferior maps)

    Google Maps can be set to use your GPS if your phone is equipped with it.
    Simply run Google Maps...
    Options > Tools > Use GPS (check it or uncheck it for on and off, it toggles)
    Current version is 3.2.0 which supports layers and Latitude.
    The good thing is that it will get a cell tower lock (where supported) first before it establishes a satellite lock so you get a position, albeit approximate, faster.
    You can tell it has established satellite lock when a small box on the top right corner of your app shows you "GPS active (x)" where x = number of satellites locked.
    Unfortunately, it does not seem to support the magnetometer on the newer phones yet for compass heading.
    Good luck.

  • I am in nanchang jiangxi china but my local weather and google map is showing unknown location so Plz help me

    I am in nanchang jiangxi china but my local weather and google map is showing unknown location so Plz help me

    The weather application is powered by "Yahoo". It doesn't have all cities listed in the database and your city is also not listen. Therefore it's not showing your local weather. You can "ADD" a nearby location in the weather application.
    For the location problem, turn the location service "OFF" & "ON". Restart your phone (by long pressing the ON & OFF button on top right & slide to tun off). Then use a WIFI connection to run the google map application and locating your position. I hope this will fix the issue.
