Latest nvida drivers for 2000M are totally broken.

Question

Since reinstalling from the rescue disks, then updating all drivers, my machine is unusable.
Before I had bios 1.32, now I have 1.38.  I had an old version of the nvidia drivers, now I have the latest (8.17.12.9620)
Displayport no longer works.  I.e. when I boot, it sees the names of they 2 attached displayport monitors on the doc, but they are greyed out with low resolution, and windows-P cannot switch to them.  A workaround was to boot up, then put the machine to sleep, then wake it, then it could correctly see the 2 displays and I could use them.  Now that doesnt work either - I have £3000 worth of dell 30" monitors I cant use.
So I dug out an old VGA monitor so I could at least use something.
When I booted with this attached, it recognised it and extended my display, but set my 1080p internal panel to 1280x800, and no option to increase it.  So I disconnected the VGA, and set it to use internal panel only.  But its stuck at 1280x800, thats the max the windows resoution dialog will let me increase it too.  So I tried the sleep/wake trick, but its still stuck at 1280x800.  So I had to reboot with the VGA monitor unplugged.
So thats it. I cant use the W520 with any external monitor. Its a huge disaster - I cant work.

do you feel confident in trying to back-level the BIOS to rule out 1.38? and, just curious... what fixes were you looking to get with the 1.32 --> 1.38 update? there sure are a good number oof fixes listed.
