It is my assumption too that intel core duo is a 64 bit processor, and your configuration supports 64 bit.
In order to install a 64 bit operating system, the chipset on your mainboard should be able to support 64 bit. It is possible to have a 64 bit processor in a configuration which only supports 32 bit.
It is no problem to install 32 bit linux on a 64 bit machine configuration. It is not possible to install 64 bit linux on a machine configuration which only supports 32 bit.

Does anyone know if there will be an update to Photoshop CS2 to optimize the performance on an Intel Core Duo? The performance of Photoshop CS2 on my Mac Book definitely seems slower than on my older G4 Powerbook.

Does anyone know of any benchmarking software or programs like 3DMark that can run on these Intel iMacs?

xbench 1.2 is supposely universal binary, but I don't think it is really optimized yet to accurately measure the speed of the intel iMacs.

I could not agree more! My MBP 2007 Intel Core Duo has had its logic board replaced not to long ago (DVI port died). The original hard drive is running great and I am running Snow Leopard wonderfully.
I was amped during the keynote and am really looking forward to Lion. I know the community is working hard to uncover a workaround because at present time, the solution (by new!) is not a worthy one. Especially when there is literally, nothing wrong with my existing machine.
Apple, please ensure Lion will be available for Intel Core Duo machines, we are not that old! The closed architecture approach produces quality hardware. 4 years is a toddler perhaps teenager when it comes to apple hardware and technology. I predict I have at least 3-4 more years left in my current MBP 2007 machine.

My thanks to you and all other respondents. In backing up "theVault" App I thought that my ancient version of Stuffit was inadequate to unzip the backup file. I attempted to download the latest Zipit version which only works with Lion. After upgrading to Stuffit 9 I realized that theVault backup file was encrypted so as to not open on the backup Mac. One must restore to the iPhone where is does open.
My apologies for the imprecise post. I am finding limitations with not being able to install Lion on my early MacBook Pro. I can recommend theVault to those looking for a password App with secure backup.

I only have version 9.0.3 of iTunes because it hasn't let me go higher, which I believe is because of the operating system. I want to get my purchased music from the Mac mini to a different computer (that has the latest version of iTunes) and also my iPad. If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775. Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk). *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?. Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

Hi. Your computer can be upgraded to either Leopard 10.5 or Snow Leopard 10.6. 10.6 will be much easier to find and will be less expensive. Leopard is not required prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.

Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 20-Inch (Early 2009) Specs. This is an iMac 9,1. I downloaded the pdf manual and found that it will take 2 4GB memory cards (whew! I had already ordered them). Thanks for your help. I finally found everything I needed for now!

Those folks selling install DVD's on ebay don't usually specify which machine their discs are for.PLUS THEY DONT ACCEPT RETURNS.

Please don't post your serial number in your post. Take a look at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159#iMac it will have the version of Mac OS that came with your iMac. Try to match that with the DVDs on eBay. Or you can always call Apple to order it.
