Latest releng ISO's

Ok i really didn't know where or even if i should post this but i just wanted to thanks the releng devs for their work.
I had some problems in the past but the latest releases really seem to shape up nicely.
The latest 2011.05.12 ISO especially  (found @: http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/ ) installs perfectly without a single glitch on me.
Now i know that one guy running a standard setup with success doesn't say much, but i encourage more people to try them since a "final" version doesn't look far in my eyes.

Those are testing isos, which aren't meant for newcomers.

anyone can use the isos, newcomer or not. as long as you're aware these are testing builds.
and feedback is very appreciated, in fact is a must. not enough feedback == no new official release. (thanks freestyler for the feedback)
i cannot put any information about these images on the download page because that would cause too much traffic.

  • Wrong file naming on latest installation ISO

    Hi all.
I whose trying to install Arch from latest installation ISO without any success. I whose thinking that whose problem with UEFI and USB combination, similar to this
    Boot USB installation as EFI
I've whose getting same output as on this screenshot
But after studying error messages, I've noticed some wrong file naming:
    \ARCH\X86_64\USR_LIB_MODULES_FS.SFS
    \ARCH\X86_64\ROOT_IMAGE_FS.SFS
    \ARCH\I686\USR_LIB_MODULES_FS.SFS
    \ARCH\I686\ROOT_IMAGE_FS.SFS
    \ARCH\ANY\USR_SHARE_FS.SFS
    Setup expects to find
    \ARCH\X86_64\USR-LIB-MODULES.FS.SFS
    \ARCH\X86_64\ROOT-IMAGE.FS.SFS
    \ARCH\I686\USR-LIB-MODULES.FS.SFS
    \ARCH\I686\ROOT-IMAGE.FS.SFS
    \ARCH\ANY\USR-SHARE.FS.SFS
After changing file names, setup boots up normally and start shell. This is problem with file names or in ARCHISO.IMG?
Hope it helps for others to run installation media.
Hope it helps for others to run installation media.

thanks alot for the clarification, I tried to search Google on this trouble and I finally found this post!
I also had to rename, although I extracted with 7-zip I renamed both the ROOT_IMAGE.FS.SFS files to whatever was tried at the prompt ...
We really should put some pre-built alternative images up for this on the download-page

Just get into "General" -> last option is "RESET" -> Opt for "RESET NETWORK SETTINGS"
Your phone will reeboot in a couple of minutes n then get fine on with full signal on the wifi scale.
Worked perfect for me. Do try n let me know.

Can you try removing nomodeset in the "linux ..." line in "Arch Linux (i686) archboot" (edit mode) along with adding the above lines, and reboot.
    Also type in grub2 prompt
    grub> set
and tell me what it it show for _EFI_ARCH= , i386 or x86_64 .
    It says "i386".
You have 32-bit EFI, which is very old. You need to remove efi booting support from archboot. Extract archboot iso to any dir. Install extra/{libisoburn,libisofs,libburn} packages. Cd into the extracted dir and run
xorriso -as mkisofs -rock -joliet \
    -max-iso9660-filenames -omit-period \
    -omit-version-number -allow-leading-dots \
    -relaxed-filenames -allow-lowercase -allow-multidot \
    -volid "ARCHBOOT" \
    -eltorito-boot boot/syslinux/isolinux.bin \
    -eltorito-catalog boot/syslinux/boot.cat \
    -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table \
    -output ../archboot.iso ./
Last night I booted an old CD, 2009.08.  I did the install and tried to use grub2 as the bootloader with no success.  I tried both the 'grub2-bios' and 'grub2-efi-i386' installing them to /dev/sda.  On reboot I don't get a grub prompt, just the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key".
What was the exact error? Did you read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2 instructions?
I may give up after this, use the 2009.08 boot CD and try to use the grub/MBR method as I was using.  The reason I decided to try grub2 was I just installed an SSD.  In the archwiki grub2 it suggests "By default, Apple's firmware switches SATA drives into IDE mode (not AHCI mode) when booting any OS besides Mac OS. It is easy to switch back to AHCI if you are using GRUB2 with an Intel SATA controller."  This can be done by setting:
    setpci -d 8086:27c4 90.b=40
    in /etc/grub/grub/cfg
I understand these questions are OT, but I thought I'd ask:
    1) Does GPT have any other advantage than setting the starting sector to 2048?  I was thinking of using fdisk to do this along with grub (not grub2) -- Are there any flaws in my ignorance?
    2) Do you know if it's possible to set AHCI mode with grub?
    1) Using fdisk itself was a mistake. Macs use GPT and you should have used gdisk (available in archboot iso and latest releng test isos  http://releng.archlinux.org/isos/).
    2) No idea about AHCI. Like I said I don't have a Mac to try these things.

Is this problem occurring in latest Archboot iso or in some earlier version? The latest one had few changes in the way initramfs is created (one initramfs per arch, not one per kernel). Can you boot into the latest archboot and check whether

  • Catalyst won't install also floppy not mounted with 2008.04 new ISOs

For some reason or another the latest realeased Iso after (Don't Panic)  the one that came out recently 2008.04 in May I cannot set up my floppy even though I identitfied it right and catalyst won't install I did pacman -Syu to install the files it required but it wouldn't complete the transaction due to some conflicting files. I'll show you what I mean.
This is my floppy line in fstab that was right on in the Don't Panic release:
    /dev/fd0   /media/floppy    vfat          defaults,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
This is what happens under new realease
    [krazybastid@krazy89709874976 ~]$ mount /media/floppy
mount: special device /dev/fd0 does not exist
    [krazybastid@krazy89709874976 ~]$
So I try to install catalyst:

Well I'm stuck is there a way out of this cause I can't even use the (Don't Panic) CD now without running into more update problems.

Greetings. While trying to upgrade I got the following error
    $sudo pacman -Syuf

    pl help.
Note: with lspci | grep Wireless I noted that my  wireless is intel PRO 2200 chip set. and in the modules ipw2200 was there for loading. I could not figure out why ipw3945 hinters the upgrade problem. I removed ipw3945  with sudo pacman --remove ipw3945 and removed the ignorepkg in rc.conf. made a try with pacman -Syu for a system upgrade operation.
After a completion of about 360 MB of updates down load it failed to update the system. It is late night. I decided to give a try with yaourt. This time with yaourt -Syf sytem got updated.

  • Where to D/L latest img Linux source code tree (2.6.27.29)

I want to include a specific driver in my initrd, but in order to do so, I must first compile it using the proper kernel. I'm trying to find the kernel files (rpm I guess?) for the kernel used by the latest imaging ISO (2.6.27.29-0.1-default) but I can't find them anywhere.
The doc for updating initrd in ZDM7 (Novell Documentation) gives a link to "linux-2.6.16.46-0.12-pulsar.tgz Linux source code tree file", which is outdated by now. I did find this: NOVELL: Downloads - Linux kernel 20090817 , but I'm not sure it's the right thing and unlike the previous link, apparently you need special permissions to download this one.
Any idea where to find the latest files?

  • GRUB error message 15 after installation[SOLVED]

during my installation from a live cd (on disk..not net install) I installed GRUB onto the mbr. I am dual booting with Windows Vista and thankfully it boots up from the GRUB menu. When I try to boot arch linux I get an error 15.
I've tried to install GRUB onto my arch root partition (/dev/sda3) using chroot but I can't seem to get those much needed files in order for arch to boot up properly. I am not sure whether or not GRUB was put onto the Windows partition or not.
This is basically what I did to try to fix the problem unsuccessfully:
    grub root (hd0,2)
    grub setup (hd0,2)
    grub quit
    #reboot
I looked at my /boot/grub/menu.lst and put root=UUID=<partition UUID for sda3> for both my fallback and regular arch.
Any help on this confusing issue would be much appreciated.

Definitely have to second this one.
I just completed a fresh net install and encountered this error. I spent more time correcting this issue than the install took.
It also does not provide for a good impression when a system cannot boot up after a fresh install.
There are releng isos available at http://releng.archlinux.org
These are very latest isos generated every couple of days, so you are guaranteed to be updated (almost). Use them, report bugs, so that they get fixed and then they will be released as official versions.
Unfortunately, every one complains about the official iso not working, but no one is willing to test the releng isos to help out the devs. I do understand the due the rolling release nature of Arch, its tedious to have to test installation isos, once you have completed the installation -- but no gain without some pain.
I will give those a try as I am happy to help test. Since I have a system I can play with a failure won't be an issue.
I have been using Ubuntu / Linux Mint and thought I would give Arch a try. I do understand your point of view but on the flip-side (devil's advocate perhaps?) an "official ISO" should always work. Otherwise what is the point of it being official?

  • [SOLVED] UDEV Failed at boot

    hey all,
I'm having an issue with udev at boot failing and although I can get to the login prompt and login a whole load of hardware is undetected including network graphics and sound. I am able the start udevd without any apparant issue once logged in but unfortunatley I'm not all that clued up on how to find and load driver short of loading modules I've been told to for reasons X,Y and Z.
I am having to use a live disc to get online and send this post and pull log data from my  system.
things I've tried include re-installing udev, kmod and the kernel plus reading alot on udev and how it is ment to work (starting to get major eye strain now)
here is a paste of my boot log
    http://pastebin.com/K5L3pbm1
    my messages.log
    http://pastebin.com/qzEziaxY
    and finally my dmesg log
    http://pastebin.com/F4aSdfKe
I'm not sure which of these logs will be useful but if any more information is need let me know...
    and Thank You in advance.

And it helped me too....but leaves me curious as to why the initscripts are not updating ?
Medium length story: I had to upgrade to current using the official iso (current release) dated last fall.
I tried c couple of recent releng isos and they failed to mount my usb partition as the targets. This was
also the case for the latest archbang iso as well. i.e. To do an install to a usb stick I had to use the old core.
All of that, albeit time comsuming, was more or less something I could plod along with on my own. The failure
of the dep-chain to pick-up on installing the latest initscripts was surprising as it required that I find the information
    in this email thread.

  • GDM 3.6 wont start

I installed a brand new system two days ago, from the latest Arch ISO. I'm using Xorg 1.11 and Catalyst 12.6 from the official xorg111/hd234k repos. My DE is Gnome Shell 3.6.1. Arch is dual booted alongside Windows 8 (sda1/2 for Win8, sda3/4 for Arch, no Swap). The hardware is a AMD Phenome II x4 920, ATi HD Radeon 4870 512mb, and 8Gb of ram.
This is the first time I've tried to use both systemd and grub2. But so far all the help I've been able to get from the IRC has lead to dead-ends. As far as I know, I've read the docs very thoroughly and set everything up correctly, and everything does work perfectly except for GDM. Meaning if I put "exec gnome-session" in ~/.xinitrc and '$ startx' then Gnome Shell starts up and runs fine (though keyring doesn't remember my passwords).
Yes, I have set "nomodeset" in /etc/default/grub and generated Grub2 correctly
Yes, I have set up systemd correctly (hostname, locale, timezone, hwclock, kernel modules, etc). Like I said, everything works great in Gnome-Shell.
Yes, I have run "systemd enable gdm", but gdm fails to load, and while no error message display at boot (it just sits there after the "systemd-fsdisk : clean ... " message), disabling GDM then running it manually ("# gdm") says that Xorg failed to load, and to check the Xorg logs.
Well I've checked the Xorg logs, and the errors present don't return any useful results on Google... so I'm posting here in hope this isn't just some odd bug with my system specifically. The logs are as follows:
Log: /var/log/Xorg.log.old (this is the one generated [i believe] from running '# gdm')

  • [Solved]Can't get past "Starting network" during installation from USB

I'm trying to do a fresh install of Archlinux on my laptop, following the Beginners Guide. However, I never get to the shell prompt because the installation gets stuck at "Starting network [Busy]".
    These are steps I followed:
    - I downloaded the latest Arch ISO.
    - I wrote it to a usb stick ("Kingston Data Traveler") with "dd if=archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb"
    - I put the usb stick into my laptop (HP Pavilion dm1-4139sd), and booted it. I chose "x86_64". Everything seems to go fine, the only warning I get is: "microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin".
    - I get the message "INIT: Entering runlevel: 3" and "Starting Syslog-NG [Done]", after that its endlessly (at least 20 minutes) stuck on "Starting network [Busy]".
I tried the following variations on the above:
    - Wrote the ISO to a different USB, samen problem.
    - Tried it with a different Arch version (from August), same problem.
    - Turned kvm on and off, same problem.
    - Pressed TAB at the "x86_64" line and added "acpi=off" to the end of it. I then get:
        :: Triggering uevents....
        [ 19.697932 ] usb 1-1: device not accepting address 2, error -110
        :: Mounting '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201209' to '/run/archiso/bootmnt'

ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201209' device did not show up after 30 seconds....
        Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
        [rootfs /]#
I'm not sure what to do in this prompt. At least the network isn't working and none of the normal commands.
    - I reset the DHCP leases on my modem, same problem.
    - I turned off/on the hardware WLAN, same problem.
    - I tried it with or without the LAN cable plugged in, same problem.
    - I tried it with or without the battery plugged in, and with or without the power cable plugged in. Same problem.
I also performed the Arch memory test, and the bios hard disk test. They both report no errors.
I did an Arch installation a month ago on this laptop, and back then it didn't have this problem. I still have that arch installed from back then and it boots/works without problem (I have Starting NetworkingManager [Done]). I know I technically don't need to install arch again, as I still have the old one, but I wanted to clean the changes I made to some settings files and I if it turns out this is some kind of hardware problem I'd like to return it to the store.
Please help! I'm not really that familiar with Linux in general, so it might have been a very basic mistake from me as well. I have no idea what to do next, except for formatting my harddisk (which I don't think should influence the installer?), or trying to install a different Linux distro.
Edit: The solution that solved this problem for me in the end was resetting the BIOS to its defaults.

DSpider wrote:Did you check the MD5 checksum? If you downloaded it using a BitTorrent client, then you don't need to (its hash is checked during downloading).
Yes, I downloaded it using BitTorrent and the MD5 matches.
    DSpider wrote:Try a different stick?
Yes, I tried it with 2 different USB sticks. They are both from the same brand ("Kingston DataTraveler"), so I might try different brands as well, but I don't think it is the problem.
DSpider wrote:Or at least a different method from that wiki page. For example, "dd"-ing it should work just fine.
The methods for writing the ISO that I tried so far:
    The base method:
    dd if=archlinux.iso of=/dev/sdb
    (from an Arch install)
The method without overwriting your USB drive (created a FAT32 drive with an VFAT filesystem, from an arch install)
    Using Imagewriter (from Windows)
Each method gives the same result: the laptop gets stuck at "Starting network [Busy]" when booted from one of the USB sticks. My modem indicates that it "sees" the laptop, but that the laptop has no established connection. When the laptop is stuck at the "Starting network [Busy]", all the activity on the USB stick stops (the light stops flashing).
The thing I find most strange is that the OS currently installed on the laptop has no problems booting or accessing the internet (both wired and wireless) at all.

    Hi
Currently all versions of F-Secure Internet Security / SAFE will bluescreen with Windows 10 starting from Windows 10 build 10130. Only the beta version of F-Secure SAFE ("fs protection") is compatible.
We know what is causing the problem and are working on maintenance releases. The products will be updated before Windows 10 launches.

  • Rt61 Wireless no longer works in 2.6.34

    This is related to https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=99117
I'm having the same problem, but what fixed the OP's problem didn't fix mine. To summarize, the base arch setup has wifi working just fine in the 2.6.33 kernel that came with the latest core iso. Once I did a pacman -Syu and updated to 2.6.34, wireless is no longer working. It can scan for SSIDs, but it cannot connect. It times out. I'm using netcfg with basic authentication. Tailing everything.log, I see this:
    kernel: wlan0: direct probe to <my ap> (try 1)
    kernel: wlan0: direct probe to <my ap> (try 2)
    kernel: wlan0: direct probe to <my ap> (try 3)
kernel: wlan0: direct probe to <my ap> timed out
I installed linux-firmware, and the system is finding /lib/firmware/rt2561s.bin just fine. Are there any known issues with the rt2561s/rt61 wireless cards and the 2.6.34 kernel? Are there other things I can try?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Thank you for everyone's assistance
I actually figured out what the problem was, like most issues it comes back to operator error, it seem I had inadvertently chose a "rename file on import" template that I had set up to name the files based on a custom fill-in field in the Meta Data, I normally only used that template when I was exporting images that had been completely edited, so being these images were new imports that field was blank, hence it would import the first image and then do to " don't import subjected duplicates" being checked it would just stop the import process.

  • [SOLVED] Windows 8.1, lost Arch boot loader, cannot reinstall or boot

    Hi all,
Apologies but I am only posting as I have exhausted my (admittedly quite limited) knowledge and have spent hours trying to get it back up and running but nothing seems to work at all. This will probably be quite long, apologies if there is something really obvious that I have missed on the Wiki or anywhere, but I'm only posting as I can't seem to get anywhere with it at all despite reading and trying.
Essentially I had a Toshiba Satellite p850-321 laptop (UEFI, secure boot off, fast boot off) which I had dual booting with Windows 8 and Arch using rEFInd. I then had several moments of madness, starting when for some reason - on very little sleep so didn't think - decided to upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1. Unsurprisingly (but a surprise for me at the time), it then booted straight into Windows 8.1, no rEFInd. In hindsight, it had probably just set itself as boot priority but I thought it had overwritten rEFInd with its own bootloader or set it back to default or something so started on a way to try and get it back.
I then spent many hours trying to get my old bootable Arch USB stick to work with no joy, updating it to the latest arch iso and all sorts. It eventually worked when I updated the laptop BIOS. Booted from the USB, chrooted into arch, reinstalled rEFInd, played around, eventually got it to reboot and display rEFInd but Arch wouldn't start. At this point I noticed that my fstab looked strange (devices/labels mixed up from what I expected), so followed the Beginner's Guide again and recreated the fstab. My disk is partitioned as follows (main partitions of note):
    /dev/sda2 - Windows EFI partition
    /dev/sda4 Windows 8.1
    /dev/sda6 arch swap partition (archswap)
    /dev/sda7 arch root partition (archroot)
    /dev/sda8 arch home partition (archhome)
Couldn't get rEFInd to work so decided to start again with gummiboot. Installed gummiboot, followed Beginner's Guide to install and configure it. Edited arch.conf and after having to mess about with the location of vmlinuz-arch.efi in the conf file, I have the options part looking like this:
    options        root=/dev/sda7 rw
Now gummiboot loads on startup but all I get on trying to load Arch from gummiboot is the dreaded:
ERROR: device '' not found. Skipping fsck
ERROR: Unable to find root device ''.
I've tried changing the root in options in arch.conf to UUID, PARTUUID and even different partitions (just to see what happened...) - the same. Is it likely to be due to me recreating the fstab and something is messed up there?
Another problem is that now, whatever I do, I cannot boot from the USB again to get in to even try to fix anything. The laptop on boot just hangs for a while and then loads the gummiboot from the disk drive rather than from the USB (I've set the boot priority, everything) and nothing will allow me to boot from the USB. That is probably a secondary issue, I can probably try to reinstall the BIOS again and see if that helps.
If anyone has had anything similar and has any solutions I'd be really grateful - anything. I don't mind being shown to be incredibly stupid, I get that a lot so have a lot of experience! - just anything that can get me back into Arch again without having to reinstall from scratch!
    Thanks.

Thanks for replying, very much appreciated. The partitions were numbered sequentially, I only posted up the partitions that I thought were of interest to the issue (which wasn't very helpful!). The partitions are as follows:
    Partition No     Type
    1                     Win Recover
    2                     EFI System (EFI partition)
    3                     Microsoft Reserved
4                     Microsoft Basic (Windows 8.1 installation)
    5                     Windows Recover
    6                     Linux Swap
7                     Microsoft Basic (Arch root partition)
8                     Microsoft Basic (Arch home partition)
    9                     Windows Recover
It looks like I have managed to solve it, but I admit I'm not sure what of the several changes I made that solved it. I managed to boot into the USB arch disk by resetting my BIOS back to defaults and then changing the boot order back, which was the only way it would boot the USB - without resetting back and putting the boot order back exactly how it was before it wouldn't boot from the USB. Anyway...
Checked the partitions with gdisk, no problems. I did sort the partitions as you mentioned, just in case. Changed the partition names using gdisk to the same names I had before (archroot, archhome, archswap). Changed the types from Microsoft Basic to Linux filesystem (partitions 7 and 8) and wrote the partition.
Mounted everything, chrooted, edited the gummiboot arch.conf file and noticed there were some strange characters in it, a forward slash before /root in the options for example. I had edited the arch.conf file from windows by booting into Windows, mounting the EFI partition (mountvol z: /s) and editing it that way, which would have messed up the formatting. It can't have only been that though as it wasn't booting anyway which is why I went into Windows to edit the file in the first place. Corrected the arch.conf file, rebooted and it booted. Some errors on boot which I need to correct but I can work on those as it boots into my arch installation.
So all solved. I thought I'd update just to say thanks for the advice and in case it helps anyone else in the future.
