  • Mac defender security update, macbook pro no longer boots up

I applied the security update and then tried to reboot my macbook pro.  Black screen, doesn't reboot.  I tried to start up in single user mode, reset the PRAM ... and nothing.  My macbook pro is now a brick.  Wow.  Good thing I applied a security update for something I would never be stupid enough to click on in the first place.
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Greetings,
The security update is software only.  It has no impact on the hardware of the computer.
Do you get a boot chime at startup?
Do you hear / feel fan movement or any other evidence of activity from within the case of the computer?
Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Try plugging the AC Adapter (3-prong not the 2-prong) into a different power outlet.
Try running the computer with the battery out if your model allows removal of the battery.
If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.

  • Configurator, iPads update iOS will no longer connect to network

Managing 30 iPad 4s with Bretford cart, Mac Mini.
On a recent update to iOS 7.0.4, it seems that not all of my iPads took it nicely. Only 3 worked like I expected in fact, and function as they did before. 27 others will no longer connect to the network I had deployed as a package in Configurator. In fact, they went back to the beginning welcome / setup screen for the OS reload.
Is there something that I can try before I just set these all to erase and re-prepare them?

Update: I unplugged all, and manually plugged in one iPad.
I unsupervised, and prepared it again, reloaded all the apps, and got the same result.
Once the iPad shows up in Configurator as prepared, and in my supervised list, it seems good to go: BUT
as soon as I turn it on, it shows me the "Hello" welcome screen, asks to join the network, and seems to freeze. The iPad goes to sleep without it receiving a connection.

    Hi Roger,
Does gMail's WebMail work with the same login & password?
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
    1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
    2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:

  • MacBook will not install latest security update

My macbook pro will not install the new security update.
    Can any help??

Your profile indicates Tiger. Post to the correct forum. Note that the latest Security Update 2007-009 (10.4.11 PPC) requires 10.4.11, not 10.4.9.

  • After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network. My network is ok, iPad and iPhone have no problems, but laptop is for all practical purposes turned into typing machine. Has somebody encountered similar problem? What to do?

After latest security update my MacBook is not finding any network and I think is not really turning wifi on. Has anyone encountered similar problem?

Checked the older discussion of the same type and found solution, well kind of... Thanks to other people who tried it, I just cannot remember their names at the moment. So, the solution for me was to turn off the firewall in the system preferences and suddenly lo and behold there was my network.

  • Ethernet will not connect after installing latest Security Update.

I installed the latest security update, restarted my computer, and found that it now will not connect to the internet. I get the message "Could not find a PPPoE server". I have checked all of my settings, restarted the computer again, turned the modem off and on again, etc., but nothing helps. I know that there is nothing wrong with the modem and server because I am connected through the same DSL modem to this computer (a mac mini). It would seem that the security update has done something unhelpful! Any ideas?
BTW, the ibook does not have a wireless card and I had not installed 2 earlier wireless updates. I only installed this one because it said "recommended for all users".

    Hello
It seems that the update set your preferences to "use PPPOe" while you where using "TCP/IP".
Go to "System Preferences" and enter the pane whose icon is named "Réseau" in french (maybe "Network" in english.
    Reset your settings to "TCP/IP".

  • MAC WILL NOT REBOOT AFTER DOWNLOADING LATEST SECURITY UPDATE

I downloaded the latest Security Update to my Mac Mini with Snow Leopard.  It downloaded but would not restart.  I finally managed to get it to boot to a bootable external drive and using Disk Utility found the HD was OK but the Preferences way out of wack.  I patched up what I could but when I tried restarting to the original drive it would not work.  I just get the white screen with a circle and stroke through it after a minute with the spinning ball.  I have tried the original start up Disk, pressing C on Startup, but it just spits it out.  I tried to use an older System Disk, one for Leopard but it will not see it.  I tried zapping the PRAM twice to no avail.  Now it won't see the bootable drive either.....
To me it sound like a massive hard drive fail, maybe nothing to do with the Security update.  Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated though.....
    Thanks,
    Stephen

I just installed the latest security update and now I cannot access iPhoto. I keep getting a message that it quit unexpectedly due to some conflict with the Scene Kit plugin.
I'm using a Macbook Pro  Mavericks Version 10.9.5

Probably the reboot used to log into the Guest account and then your account again fixed the problem.  If often will.

  • Trouble connecting to Airport after installing latest security update

Hi, I have just spent an hour with a level 2 SBC DSL tech and they could not resolve my problem. The problem is this: After installing the latest security update released on March 13 for OS 10.3.9, I can no longer securely connect to my airport. It may have something to do with the keychain because this has happened several times before, most recently after the previous security update about 2 weeks ago. Usually after much playing around, I get a window asking for permission for my new network settings to access the keychain. Once I say yes, all works fine. This time, I am not getting that prompt. Even though I have a full signal showing I am connected to the base, it will not pick up and IP address. Finally, the SBC tech had me disable the wireless key on the desktop pc that is the primary computer on the system and immediately my connections works. If I enable the wireless security key, I lose the connection. As I am completely open to hackers with the wireless security disabled, this is a big problem. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE can anybody help me?! Thank you so much for your help!

    Hi, my first post here!
I too experienced this problem this evening, after applying the latest security update to Panther. I had verified that the wireless base station was working correctly and that it's WEP key hadn't become corrupted. There were no error messages after re-starting the Mac, just no IP number via airport.
The keychain utility would hang if any attempt was made to alter the password for WEP, and the airport utility hung too. I used Disc Utility to verify permissions, which found dozens of errors - haven't done any maintenance for months - and fixed them.
On re-starting, Airport was 'OFF' so turned it on, was asked to allow access to keychain, and all is working again.
Thank you to those of you who posted the suggestion about permissions, you certainly saved my evening!

  • Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?

I've reapplied the 10.4.11 combo update in an attempt to trouble shoot some problems I've been having. My question is, "Does reapplying 10.4.11 combo update negate the latest security updates?" I've checked my computer using the "Software Update" option, and I'm given the message that I'm up to date. But that may be due to the fact that there's a receipt of the security update in my receipt's folder.

    Steve:
If the Combo update was downloaded previous to the last security update being available it will not have included the security update. If the Combo update was downloaded after the security update was available, it will have included the latest security update. As new updates become available, the Combo update is updated so that it includes the latest updates. If you are concerned that the security update may not have been included in the Combo update, or you are sure that you downloaded the Combo update a while previous to the availability of the latest security update you can either:
    1. Download the stand alone security update and install it over what is already on your computer, or
    2. Download the current Combo update and install it.
In either case, remember to Repair Disk Permissions in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility before and after installation.
    Cheers

  • Slow mac after latest security update!!!

So I updated my macbook pro running 10.5.5 to the latest security update and now everything has slowed down! Now I get a beach ball for 5-10 seconds every time I try to open a program, go to a web page, save a file, etc. Is anybody else having this problem???

    Hi nerowolfe,
Yes, rest assured you are not alone in your post-update slowdown problems.
I ran back to the steely, solid prowess of Tiger after Leopard indicated it preferred to just sit in the tree sleeping and occasionally falling out. We'll put Leopard down to experience. (The lesson being, if you're embarking on a project, let your developers do the job. Don't re-deploy or scatter your developers mid-way onto more commercial gadgets).
It's a shame but there's now a definite trepidation that comes with OS X software updates. The very rate at which we're being force fed them speaks for itself. Most of the time, I find that they introduce so many other issues that increments in numbers means heartache, searching for fixes, restoration and forgetting the experience. Until the next update, which is the next lap of this downward spiralling track we seem to be on. Do you remember when you could concentrate on your tasks, and not the operating system? (It's becoming difficult).
As for practical solutions nerowolfe, up to now, repairing HD permissions using the OS X inbuilt features or using Onyx has usually done the trick. But neither seem to make a blind bit of difference in the wake of this latest update.
Does anyone else have any practical solutions?
Does anyone know if it's possible to bypass updates or remove installed updates?

  • Latest security update and the disappearance of my external drive

I'm sure you're going to tell me that one has nothing to do with the other, but after running the latest security update, the Iomega MiniMax external drive that's been connected to my TiBook for the last 3 years has all of a sudden disappeared from my desktop.
System profiler sees it, Disk Utilities sees it. But there are a couple of things bugging me:
    - I'd never paid attention before, but both the System profiler and DU indicated that SMART is not supported
    - When I ran DU (off the OSX install disk) to try to repair the HD, I got the following message:
    +Invalid node structre+
    +Volume check failed+
(these 2 lines in red type)
+Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit+
    (this in bold, red type)
    +1 HFS volume checked+
+1 volume could not be repaired because of an error+
I think that was in red, too, but can't swear to it, as I'm totally rattled by now.
Now, there is no system on the Iomega, nothing but precious photos and music (since the original HD on this TiBook could only hold 30 Gb), and I'm at a loss as to why all of a sudden I can't access it. Whenever I've come back from a trip, I just plug the external back in (via firewire and usb), and it would just show up, as if nothing had happened.
Any ideas, any help would be, as usual, most appreciated.
    Thank you all.

I realize I'm getting 'way off this thread, but wanted to post back. I brought the Iomega to work, plugged it into my iMac and… nothing. Running DU gave me the same results as posted above. Then, for want of a better idea, I pulled out the install disk for the iMac, started up off that and ran DU.
Guess what? It went through its verifications, came up with problems and then proceeded to repair the external. And that wonderful little orange icon was there on my desktop at startup!
There shouldn't be any difference; my guess is it just happened to pick that time to mount. Sometimes a HD with issues will not mount 10+ times in a row, then, for whatever reason, it does on the eleventh try.
There's a new folder in the Iomega now, called "lost+found", weighing in at a little over a Mb and full of files ending with ".nib". Any idea what those are and if I need to keep them?
Hmmm, Google search turns up this from wiki:
Interface Builder is a software development application for Apple's Mac OS X operating system. It is part of Xcode (formerly Project Builder), the Apple Developer Connection developer's toolset. Interface Builder allows Cocoa and Carbon developers to create interfaces for applications using a graphical user interface. The resulting interface is stored as a .nib file, short for NeXT Interface Builder, or more recently, as a .xib file.
    Do you use Xcode?
Another hit mentions iPhone, and another Corel. Don't know what to make of it in your case. Can you open any of the files? Any have same name as your data? Creation dates?
I shall now proceed to back up before reformatting.
    Good plan.
And check out the cost of a replacement here (they're a good bit higher than in the States.
Ask yourself what your data is worth, and after it's gone, what you would have spent to have retained it. My guess is the answer would be a lot more than the cost of a HD.
    Do I want a SATA?
Nope, TiBook doesn't have that interface.
I liked this model because it also worked as a hub… There are so many flavors out there now!
    Indeed.
er, ahem, that's a sheepish "yes".
    'Nuff said.
A while back, thanks to you and other forum members, I'd gathered up the courage to swap out the original HD for the biggest one the PB could take, and had always meant to to a "backward" backup of the stuff that was on the external — or copying photos onto CDs. Needless to say, the task got put off until this scare. Won't be doing that again.
I considered myself "lucky" the first time I lost data, as it wasn't too, too important, but it taught me a lesson I've never forgotten.
So, once again, thanks for the hand-holding (you had also talked me through/encouraged me to deal with the tight hinges on the TiBook).
You're welcome. Together with RAM and HD, that was the best thing I ever did for my TiBook.
    Love this forum!
    We aims to please!

I tried using the downloaded update. It still didn't work but at least I did not have to restart my computer. The message was a little different too: "The installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

Run through this list of fixes, either something is corrupted or you have malware that's blocking the update.

Make sure to backup your users files to a external storage drive first (not only TimeMachine as it may fail to restore) and disconnect, because if' it's a drive corruption/failing then the entire thing will either have to be replaced or a wipe and install done.
