Latest snow leopard update kills my browsers

Snow Leopard was running great until I downloaded the most recent update. Now Safari sometimes won't download pages (I get the ..can't connect.. message) unless I repeatedly reload. Then I may get a page with what looks like CSS code. Firefox does the same. I reinstalled the original OS disk but the problem is still there.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
For Safari...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
bpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If nothing above has helped, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.

  • Latest snow leopard update taking forever

Seems like the latest snow leopard update is stuck on a blue screen with the turning wheel thing. Is it possible to restart the upgrade without messing up my MacBook?

It might get messy but eventually you won't have a choice. Try a hard restart into Safe Mode:
Be sure the computer is shut down by using the hard Power button.
Press the power button again after one minute.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Then use your machine's original software installation disk to do a Repair Permissions.
Restart your machine after removing the disk and go to the Apple Store/Support/View All Support Downloads. Select the 10.6.5 Combo Updater and use that to attempt another download/install.
Repair permissions again using Disk Utility.
Perform a backup after checking all is working well.

  • Problem with Pages 09 after latest Snow Leopard Update

I upgraded Snow Leopard with the latest update this afternoon, and now I am having all sorts of problems with Pages. Most importantly, the Pages templates are all messed up, with formatting all screwed up and the typesetting a mess. Has anyone else experienced such problems with Pages after the update? I may have to revert back to pre-update Snow Leopard if this can't be resolved, since I use Pages for my work. Any assistance here would be appreciated!

You can install the combo over the delta (Software Update version). I did after I inadvertently used Software Update on my MacBook Pro. That's what I get for trying to update 3 Macs at one time.
Here is the link to the Mac OS 10.6.4 combo updater.

  • Latest Snow Leopard update software

After the latest update software for snow leopard, my computer constantly freezes. I have to force shut it down by holding the button. I have disconnected everything from it and did the repair disk permissions. Neither has worked. If the computer goes into sleep mode and I wake it up, the moment I try to do anything it freezes. After the force shutdown it has no problems until it goes to sleep again.

A bit of a long shot, but you might try downloading the 10.6.3 combo update and running that (it will run even though you already have 10.6.3). Sometimes that replaces corrupt files that don't get replaced by an incremental update but that cause the update heartburn.

  • Please could somebody help? Aperture will not open - has a coloured spinning disc prior to opening the program correctly. I have the latest Snow Leopard  update on a Mini Mac. I have "successfully installed" the latest Aperture 3.1.2 update.

I am running the latest OS version and uploaded the latest version of Aperture 3.1.2 all successfully installed. I have all my photos (say 12000 files) stored on a RAID WD (MyBook) external hard-drive and I assume that that has the latest software update Wd 2.25. I have previously had problems with Aperture's external referencing - which drops out frustratingly, I was in the middle of a major import of photos when the spinning rainbow ball appeared. I am now unable to open Aperture.
I have tried rebooting to no change.
    Help please?

    Colin-
Thanks for the detailed info. One additional question, how full is each hard drive? The internal and external drives' % full.
Step one is to change the import workflow. Even though lots of manuals inappropriately lead folks in that direction, one should never import directly into Aperture or any other images management app. Instead, in this exact order:
    • Restart the Mini (to clear possible memory leaks of the limiting 2-GB of RAM).
    • Create a folder ("abc") for the incoming images. Since you are on a Mini you will want to be referencing Masters with the Library on the Mini's hard drive and the Masters on your external RAID array. The abc folder should be created on the RAID.
    • Connect a card reader with the camera card in it. The camera card should show on the desktop. If it does not show, restart the Mini with the reader and card still plugged in. You can of course use the camera directly in this step, but I do not recommend it. Obviously cameras like the iPad do require direct camera-to-computer uploading.
    • Drag the contents of the card's image folder(s) to the abc folder that you previously created on the hard drive.
    • Review the abc folder contents to be sure they all copied properly.
    • Software-eject the camera card.
    • Physically disconnect the camera card reader from the Mini. This step is important to help avoid all-too-common human error.
    • Again review the abc folder contents to be sure they are indeed all there (because stuff happens sometimes...).
    • Back up the abc folder contents on to another drive.
    • Review the files on the backup to be sure they all copied properly.
    • At any time after but not before the previous step you can reformat the camera card in-camera. Do not delete images on the card using the computer.
    • Start Aperture and only have Aperture running (due to your limited 2 GB RAM).
    • Import the images from folder abc into Aperture, selecting "Store Files: In their current location" on the right-hand side of the import window.
Some generic advice I posted in another thread:
Aperture is a heavy pro graphics app that is very demanding of hardware. Your Mac's CPU, GPU, i/o and RAM are all limiting to Aperture so we need to do what we can to optimize. Some steps:
    • Set Previews to only be built manually, and only tell Aperture to build Previews when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture. I suggest setting the size of Previews to be the pixel dimensions of your display.
    • Keep the internal drive underfilled for speed, which sooner or later usually requires using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before importing into Aperture or any other images app.
    • The Aperture Library should be on an internal drive.
    • Turn off Share Previews with iLife and iWork.
    • Remember that HDs slow as they fill and keep the internal drive underfilled. Approx. 70% full _maximum_ is a good guideline.
    • If page outs increase significantly during operation, max out RAM and/or try to run Aperture by itself. On my C2D MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB.
    • Some users have observed that it can take a new Aperture installation time (weeks) to stabilize on slow computers. So do not panic; and allow Aperture to continue background work by not fully shutting down the computer.

  • ITunes 10.2.2 won't run, even after reinstalling it and the latest Snow Leopart update... what can I do?

    Hello,
I'm using a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.7. I've just updated iTunes to the latest version 10.2.2 but it keeps quitting unexpectedly upon opening it. I've tried deleting the Genius information, reinstalling it, as well as even reinstalling the latest Snow Leopard update but nothing seems to work. What can I do?
Thanks in advance for any help, and let me know if there are any questions.

    sorry i get this error:

  • Snow Leopard Update Broke 2 Printers (Samsung, Brother)

One of the Snow Leopard updates has broken both of my printers. Both are hard-wired network printers that previously worked fine.
    1. Brother HL-5250DN B/W laser
    - When I print HTML pages, the page background color defaults to black, so I get a solid black page with graphics stuck in. I first noticed this in Safari; changing the "print backgrounds" setting doesn't fix the problem. I then saved a page (www.apple.com) to HTML source and tried printing it from other apps. Firefox & Text Edit both had the same problem. MS Word (Office 2004) did not.
    - If I create a PDF file from a web page in Safari, then print it using Preview, the problem occurs. If I print it using Photoshop Elements, it prints correctly.
Note that images LOOK fine. The all-black background only occurs when printing.
    2. Samsung CLX-3170 Color Laser
No matter what I try to print, I always get the same error: "couldn't create rgb colorspace". I have searched both these forums and the web and can't even find a description of what might be causing this (although may Mac owners seem to be having variations of the problem).
    3. Troubleshooting -- What I have tried (systematically, multiple times)
    - Re-installed latest printer drivers from Manufacturer's sites
    - Installed Gutenprint 2.4 CUPs drivers
    - Repaired permissions
    - Reset the Print subsystem and re-installed all printers
    - Tried different printer drivers where available (the Brother has a BR-script driver)
    - Run OS X software update
    - Restarted my system
    - Removed printer-related items from Logon
    - Reset Safari
    - Run Onyx and cleaned all caches and nearly everything else
    4. I have an iMac G5 running 10.5.8. It prints all of the above to both printers with no problems.
At this point I'm starting to wonder how well Windows 7 might run on my iMac... (only half kidding).
I've wasted hours on this problem. I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.

If you are using the Brother driver, have you tried using the Generic PostScript PPD as a workaround?

Which driver are you using when adding the printer? Have you tried the other one? Samsung has SL drivers for this model, so you shouldn't have to use the Gutenprint driver.
I hope that someone at Apple has a solution.
Apple doesn't write the drivers, so if using the Generic PostScript PPD or switching drivers doesn't work, you might have better luck contacting Brother and Samsung.

  • I bought and downloaded the latest snow leopard and lost most of my pictures and most of my i tunes music. The pictures show in iphoto but when i try to open them I get a big "!" and when my music shows in Itunes but when I try to play it, it wont open

I need help... Since downloading the latest snow leopard, I cant open most of my pictures in iphoto or play most of my music in Itunes.

Before you bought Snow Leopard, did you check that your machine met the specifications?   Have you enough memory, ideally you need 4GB though 2GB is okay,
Have you also applied the various software update updates which include iTunes and security updates.
Check in the Apple menu, about this Mac, and if your new disk shows as being 10.6.3 this is what to do.
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard, if your upgrade took you to 10.6.3 you will need to apply the Combo updater.   Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1  and follow with a software update to pick up the most recent security and iTunes updates.

  • My iMac was running BitDefendwr scan and I tried logging into my online banking at the same time...it froze I had to do a hard restart now it is so slow it is useless. I have Safari5 an latest Snow Leopard. Anybody have any ideas?

My IMac is so slow after having to do a hard restart. I have BitDefender 2011 for Mac and it was running a scan when I tried logging into my online banking. At the same time, I accidentally hit "update" on the Bitdefender icon to update the latest virus and malware definitions. Now my iMac is slow and useless. I have iOS5 and the latest Snow Leopard. Help please!

Before we get too far, please clarify this part:
    I have a 2009 iMac 4,1
A 2009 iMac cannot be an iMac 4,1; they are 9,1 and higher. Did you mean to type "2006?" That would be an iMac 4,1. We need to pin down the model issue before proceeding.
It could be the drive, not the disk, that is dirty. Try a drive cleaning disk, usually about US$5-15 at home entertainment, electronics stores and office superstores

Try installing the 10.6.8 Combo update which contains all the latest updates for that OS.  Be aware that there appears to be no further support for Snow Leopard.

  • IPhone SDK 3.1.3 XCode 3.2.1 Snow Leopard update (lcrt1.10.6.o not found)

Today I downloaded the iPhone SDK 3.1.3 XCode 3.2.1 Snow Leopard update.
After installing it, I looked in the Project Info. In the Deployyment section, the "Mac OS X Deployment Target" is set to "Max OS X 10.5".
Naturally, as fussy I am, I changed it to Mac OS X 10.6, which is what I want. After Building, it reports an ld error: i.e.
ld: library not found for -lcrt1.10.6.o
Why does this happen? Did others have the same experience?
Is this normal or how to fix? (Other than the obvious step to go to look for the missing library and try to install it myself).

Sony has put in a position that the camera was connected with their software called PlayMemories Home . This then allows you to import movies and photos on the computer and then use them in different ways. However, when the camera is connected to the mac and I said Mass Storage USB Connected , then you execute this program I told you about two seconds later , however returns an error message that is: Connect the device to your computer or multimedia support . I do not understand .

  • Imac i5 snow leopard update

Hi I bought an imac i5 27inch just before xmas 09. No problems. I bought the snow leopard update today ($40 from Harvey Norman) and tried to install it. Initially it started ticking over. It initially said 45 miniutes to install. Then I went back about 5 mins later than it said 49 mins to install. I then came back about an hour later and there was a white screen with the apple logo. I left it for another hour.....just the same. So I switched it off and on with the power button. White screen reappeared. Left it for two hours and no change. Took out all the peripherals. Switched it off and on....and left it for 5 hours....still the same. The mac does not respond. I cannot get the snow leopard disc out. Not sure what to do. The imac is getting quite hot (like it is doing something) when it is on....I have now switched it off. I would very grateful for any ideas. This imac was not loaded up with much.....most of the hard drive is free and there is extra (apple) RAM.

I don't understand why you bought a Snow Leopard upgrade disk. The 27" iMac i5, introduced in October of 2009, comes with Snow Leopard installed. Are you sure your iMac is the one described in this Technical Specification?
If so, the retail Snow Leopard DVD, released several months before it, does not fully support the hardware in your iMac & you should only reinstall the OS if needed using the system discs that came with your iMac.
