Latest update cause a kernel panic
Yes, I've submitted feedback. I just want to warn people. I let the updater do its thing and restart my system, then go watch TV while it updated. When I came back to turn everything off and go to bed, I have a kernel panic splashed across my 30" Apple Cinema Display. Hold off on doing the updates!!!
Doing a hard shutdown got my system back, but I'm in the middle of a big project, and I don't need to see a kernel panic at 10:30 at night. Let's see...this update caused a kernel panic, one of the last updates hosed Rosetta applications - including Quicken 2007 - until Apple came up with a patch, and one of the updates before that hosed my Airport Extreme until Apple came up with a patch for that.
Seriously??? I've been using Apple products for 29 years. I expect so much better from Apple.
I would think you'd wait for spindown then power off the device then unplug.

Every time I try to install the 10.6.8 update my iMac boots a Kernel Panic and I have to do a recovery and patches all the way back up to 10.6.7
Then when I try the 10.6.8 update again, I get another Kernel Panic. It takes hours and hours to download the updates required to return to 10.6.7 from what my recovery CD contains and after three tries I'm about to give up!
What is going on that 10.6.8 causes a Kernel Panic on boot-up?!?
I have a Mid-2007 24" iMac and I don't use Bootcamp or Parrellels or anything interesting or fun. This computer is primarlly used for email, browsing (Firefox) and playing Minecraft.
The reason I want the update is that I'm afraid Mojang (Minecraft) will soon require a Java update and without the 10.6.8 update and installing Lion I can not get a Java update.I have been reading the related posts and have found none of the suspect files. (mouse-related.ktext, CHUD related ktext files)
I deleted the Logictec mouse/keyboard drivers and stuff and also am deleting my 3rd party Magic Mouse driver.
As soon as I read something definite about this I will try another update.
I do not own a Time Machine so restoring from a backup is not happening.
I will be required (should another panic occure) to go through the entire update process again.
I curious, what would hacking on the forums have to do with 10.6.8 updates on user machines?
Also, is Apple Corporation addressing the "issues of late with 10.6.8 updates"? -
10.7.3 update on SSD, kernel panic
I had my OS and applications installed on SSD drive of my iMac. After updating to 10.7.3 via updater and rebooting, kernel panic occured. The message is something like "unable to find driver for this platform". I then tried to restore from TimeMachine, same message. Doing the update with Combo package, same thing.
I installed the latest OS on my rotational drive with no problem (and that's how I can report this!) but even clean install of the OS on the SSD gives me the same kernel panic with the same message on reboot.
I don't think SSD is the problem because I installed Snow Leopard off my install DVD with no problem. But Lion causes kernel panic every time, with no possibility to restore from TimeMachine.
iMac 27, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 x 4, 16 GB 13333 MHz DDR3, 251 GB SSD + 2 TB RotationalI installed Snow Leopard off my installer DVD. If I now install Mac OS I purchased from App Store (obviously not the update package), do I get kernel panic again?

Update to 10.6.7 causes constant kernel panics
I installed 10.6.7 on my MacPro, after installing I ended up with a Blue Screen. After unplugging al the cables I could start up the system.
Now when trying to get connected to the internet I immediately get a Kernel Panic (wireless or ethernet).
What to do, do you know how to solve this problem?
(I am thinking about reinstalling 10.6.6, but that will take some time...)
Another strange thing that appeared was that my two 30"screens were switched after the update... Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT.About the kernel panics: Here are the two latest reports. They al occur after about 5417-5455 sec. And they got something to do with invalid Socketbuf

Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 causes immediate kernel panic
Has anyone else encountered this issue? I have tried twice to no avail now to install the keyboard firmware update. I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this problem.
Given that I haven't had any keyboard problems, I am guessing that I can just ignore this update.
Note that contrary to the comment accompanying the installer that it will launch automatically, I had to start it manually both times.
Leopard's quality of updates has really tanked in relation to Tiger's. I have never seen a kernel panic before upgrading to Leopard... in fact, until Leopard, the kernel was so stable with Tiger that I was lulled into thinking that Macs don't have kernel panics. Leopard has provided abundant proof now to the contrary. I think that's a shame.David
You should also report this to Apple at <http://www.apple.com/feedback/> so that they can check whether there is a bug in the update or somewhere else. If they receive several similar feedback messages it will alert them to a problem. Generally they don't respond directly unless they want further information such as a copy of the installation log.
You could also attempt a re-instal in safe mode (startup holding the shift key until the Apple logo appears. If you haven't recently done so use Disc Utility to Repair Permissions and see whether this finds any problems. Even startup from your installation dvd, select language, then choose Disk Utility from the top menu and Repair Disk. All of these processes may allow the installer to complete its task.
Note that some firmware updates are slow completing their tasks and usually they advise that there should be no other activity on the computer until the process has completed. I've seen it mentioned that the computer may look to have frozen but to wait - not for ever though!

What causes my kernel panic?
Several times a week my Mac crashes. I have not been able to provoke a crash; they seem random. The latest report and the result of Etrecheck follows:

Mar 14, 2015, 06:30:51 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Kernel_2015-03-14-183051_[redacted].panic [Click for details]That Mac has been affected by CleanMyMac, which must be removed. To recover from the effects of having used it, read below the horizontal line that follows.
Avast is also installed and must be removed if you expect your Mac to function normally. Uninstall it using the uninstaller program included with its downloaded installation package, which will remove it completely.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
Update OS X. Version 10.10.3 is the latest release. To learn how to update OS X read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device. -
Bottom 2 screws fallen out of Macbook..could this cause a kernel panic?
Ive had my macbook black since november 2006... havent moved it around a lot... except for when it has needed to go back in for repairs.
Ive had the LCD and logic board replaced (the LCD had some weird vertical lines going across it) and the logic board went above 103 degrees celsius.
About 2 weeks after I got my beloved mac back from repairs, I noticed that 1 of the screws (towards the back) had just fallen out. I didnt give it much thought at the time, until the corresponding screw on the right also fell out.
Both of these screws would simply not go back in. Gravity pulled them out like an ejector seat of a fighter plane.. just gone.
Only now I'm thinking that this may have been the cause of the recent kernel panics ive been having. They happen almost always when the machine is moved (up, down, left, right.......)
After running the latest Techtool Pro and Apple Service Diagnostic CD, both of which reporting that every part of the machine is working 100%, I'm guessing that these 2 screws hold (held) the logic board to another component, and therefore, will give problems if not in place.
Has anyone else had this sort of problem?Hi
This sounds plausible to me, esp if you get the KP after moving the computer. I suggest you take it back to the repairer.

Latest update causes problems on iPhone 3
The most recent update for iPhone causes serious problems on my iPhone 3. The screen size is no longer accurate; top or bottom text dissapears. Some apps are no longer useable. The speed of the iPhone dropped down to ridiculous slowness. Has anyone else experienced similar issues, and more importantly, has anyone found a solution? We just got a new Macbook Pro, the iPhone is not connecting, so we cannot remove the latest update. Kind of catch 22...
The screen size is no longer accurate; top or bottom text dissapears.
Did you happens to have Zoom: ON
in Settings > General > Accessibility >
Zoom: ON?
Large Text: ON?
If so, switch it OFF.
so we cannot remove the latest update
No, downgrading is never supported -
Can anyone help me find out what caused this Kernel Panic?

What is causing my kernel panic?
My MacBook Pro (retina, late 2013, i7, 16GB) is crashing every now an then. If i remember correctly at every crash one of the following applications were open: Chrome, Brackets, Spotify.
It starts with a frozen screen (and audio being shut down) for a couple seconds, then the screen goes completely black and this crash screen appears.
It looks like this: (http://i.stack.imgur.com/Tliko.jpg) Note: this image is not taken by me, i just found it on google.

I hope someone can help me.You need to uninstall the software according to the developer’s instructions, not app cleaner. Whatever the TACC kernel extension is, find out. Google it. Removing third party kernel extensions is the first step in isolating the issue. If the issue ceases once the offending software is removed, then your issue is solved. If you require the application associated with it, contact the developer/their support team, provide them with the report. Make them aware that their software is causing kernel panics. Beyond that, find an alternative.
In the future, don’t install things, especially software that makes deep system modifications, without knowing what it is or how to uninstall it completely and correctly. -
ITunes 7 caused a kernel panic - cover flow suspected
Ok so I haven't tried this a second time, but you can if you want.
I was checking out the new grouped album cover view and noticing that some of the tracks on one album were showing up as two different albums. The artwork, artist and album name were the same, and I was sorting on "Album by Artist." I finally figured out that this is happening because some tracks in that album were marked as "Part of a compilation" and some were not. The other important piece I think is that I had cover flow ON.
Cover flow was focused on one of the '2' albums I was merging. I multi-selected the tracks to fix, the bulk change dialog came up, and I set the compilation to NO and clicked OK. BAM - kernel panic.
My guess is that cover flow should have updated to reflect the one less album in that view (I was in my Music Library view). But obviously there is a major bug. I haven't had a panic in a long long time, not a welcome sight. Luckily nothing important was open.I've seen a lot of kernel panics since iTunes 7 and/or OS X 10.4.8. I hope Apple is aware of the problem and working on it.

Podcast latest update causes contstant crash
The latest update to the poor Pocast app has now renedered it unusable, it constantly crashes to the home screen, is there any way to fix this to get it back to its previous terrible self?
We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

10.4.7 caused major kernel panic, how to restore everything again?
I friend of mine just installed the 10.4.7 update via automatic update and her iBook kernel panicked and we couldn't start it up again without the kernel panic screen appearing right after the Apple insignia. So we started from the install disc and ran Disk Utility which said it couldn't repair the damage to 1 volume. So we've just done an archive and install (as she has nothing backed up) and it seems okay now. So now she's back to 10.3.6. What do we do to get everything back as it was? Do we drag and drop everything from the Previous Systems folder? Does she have to reinstall 10.4?
MarkShe had Tiger running fine until this happened last night, so that's not really the issue. It's how to restore everything as after the archive and install, she can't open iPhoto for instance. Will she have to just reinstall Tiger or can she drag the previous systems folder contents to the relevant places and it'll all be back as before? Will the problem she encountered after the update also have a chance of being there again as it was in the previous system that crashed?

System.log file are large, and cause a kernel panic when deleting
Hello everyone,
I am trying to solve a dillema. I discovered that over 60GB of my 120GB SSD drive are taken up by system.log files. All 3 are around 20GB. I left my laptop running so none of them are the current one. They are system.log.0, system.log.3 and system.log.4. I have tried several ways to delete them:
Using Disksweeper
At a terminal prompt using sudo rm
At a terminal prompt using sudo su - (to get root access) and then rm -f ....
Rebooting the system in single user mode, mounting the drive and then attempting to delete them
Each time I do, the system reboots with a kernel panic. I have not looked at the panic log yet, but can post that if you need to.
I did look at the end of the current log file to discover there were some issues with programs, and I have fixed it so that these size log files "shouldn't" be generated anymore.
Looking for advice as to how to delete these files! This is driving me nuts. It shouldn't be this hard.
Thanks for any help or insight you can give.OK, I actually was able to solve this myself. My problem was that ther kernel panic was caused by the journaling. So here is what I had to do:
I temporarily disabled journaling, see here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=373067
Then I was able to delete the files by starting a terminal session and using sudo rm to delete the files.
Re-enabled journaling (I don't know if it is needed, but it was on before).
Hope this can help someone else in the future. -
TS4636 Can Sophos Anti-Virus cause a "kernel panic"?
Hello everyone,
The other day my MacBook Pro Retina restarted out of nowhere after it was not really reacting to anything anymore. I read on support section of apple that this may have been caused by a "kernel panic" and that most of the time a "kernel panic" appears after installing new software. The "kernel panic" appeared after I just installed Sophos Anti-Virus for my MacBook. So is it possible that by installing Sophos Anti-Virus this "kernel panic" was caused??This can happen. Sophos has/had a bug that caused these kinds of problems in Mavericks. I know that they were working on fixing it, but I honestly have lost track at this point and don't know whether it has been fixed yet. I can say, though, that this seems to be fairly rare, as I've heard very few reports of such an issue. It may only affect certain hardware, or may only be triggered by the presence of some other software. I don't know.
In any case, if this problem is affecting you, it's probably wise to uninstall Sophos. However, you need to be cautious about installing other anti-virus software, as most is less well-behaved than Sophos. You may very well be able to do without entirely.
See my Mac Malware Guide for more information.
