Latest upgrade (2 Jul 15) crashed Skype and I cannot call anyone
I got a prompt today that an update was available. I clicked on Upgrade, and got the usual message that "Please wait while Skype improves your experience..." or something like that. Then that message disappeared, and it just says Skype Home Unavailable. The symbol is the one that I usually see when there is not a network connection (little swirl in a circle). But I have no network problems. This is really bad -- you are in the middle of your workday, you think you are clicking on a quick update, and instead you are cut off from the world. So I come on this site and try to get a tech support person on chat, but the message is "Sorry, we're having problems at the moment, please try later or join the community...". Any solutions for me? I generally am really pleased with Skype, but not today!
There are hundreds of AntiVirus vendors out there. If one of the vendors decides to block an application for whatever reason there is not much that can be done. The fault really lies in the AntiVirus software, it's virus definitions and it's configuration. Here's one example of why it can fail. Let's say that Norton defaults to blocking all applications on your system so an exclusion has to be made for every program including Skype. You have an exculsion for Skype and it works fine. The exclusion for Skype saves the details for the executable including its checksum. Later when you chose to upgrade the executable, Skype doesn't launch or gain Internet access. Why is that? Because the new version of Skype does not match the executable you allowed in the exception list. It is seen as a brand new program and must be readded to the exclusion list. The old exclusion only works on that exact previous version of Skype. How this all works or doesn't work is handled by the AntiVirus software so nothing in Skype itself could be done to avoid that problem unless it was explicitly designed to interact with every AntiVirus software out there which would be beyond the scope of the program.

1. Doing complete uninstall and then reinstall.
2. Open a new skype account.

As you've been told, you purchase a phone locked to AT&T. You can NOT activate it or use it on any other network. AT&T does not unlock iPhones for any reason. Return it to the store you bought it from and get your money back. -
Skype and VLC cannot start, they keep bouncing on the dock
Skype and VLC cannot start in Mountain Lion. They just keep bouncing, they eventually stop bouncing but nothing shows up on the screen.
The CPU utilization goes to 100% and the computer starts overheating.
I found a way to start Skype and VLC from the command line:
/Applications/Skype.app/Contents/MacOS/Skype
/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC
The applications start successfully when the commands above are executed in the terminal.
Is there a reason why the applications do not work when started from the GUI? How can this be fixed?

Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. I accepted the latest 8.3 iOS upgrade last night which resulted in my not being able to turn on the iPad.
Following the troubleshooting guidelines I can get as far as the black screen by forcing a restart (holding both buttons) all I can see is the diagrammatic picture of the charger and the iTunes red logo. I cannot move on from here and the instructions indicated that a message should show offering the iOS upgrade - but this is not happening for me!
If anyone can help it would be hugely appreciated - many thanks.

It sounds like your iPad is in recovery mode after an error in the update process that may have occurred. The solution to this would be to plug it into a computer running the latest version of iTunes and press the restore button. This will ease the iPad and reinstall iOS. Hopefully you setup an iCloud or iTunes backup for the device. -
I have upgraded to OS X 10.9 and now I cannot connect to my Canoscan LIDE 90 Scanner. Cant find a new driver anywhere. Any ideas??
Like Dan White, I have found that I can still run the Lide 90 under Mavericks. As Dan says, the buttons on the front of the scanner don't work but I rarely if ever used them.
I have just tested the scanner using Acrobat Pro and it loads up the Scangear software to capture the scan, with no problems at all. I didn't have to reinstall anything as it was all there already and working in Mountain Lion. Photoshop CS 5.1 is different; it does not recognise the scanner, presumably because it can't find a TWAIN driver for it. Image Capture does not recognise the scanner either, but I don't have the latest (10.8) Canon MP Explorer and Explorer Opener software installed. -
I just "upgradd" to Firefox 10.0.2 and now cannot access the internet. This is an MS Vista platform. Wireless devices, through the same DSL line, are still fine, suggestions?

Whenever I try to call anyone, it gives me the "connecting" message, then it just quits the call entirely, though I can still message people just fine. This problem appeared a few days ago when I was in a call withmy friend, until my internet suddenly stopped working (It does this every once and a while), but instead rejoining the call when my internet came back on, It now quits the call immediately. Is there any way to fix this? I've reinstalled skype twice already, but that didn't work as skype still quits the call.
Note: My friend cannot call me either, but he still can call others. I am also on windows 8the group has 150 people in it, the participents in the call is normally under 10.
the issue is the when i hang up, it just keeps ringing on my end and everyone elses, if i pick up im hossting again, if i ignore it and they pick up i get a bunch of voice messages and then it rings again and it just keeps going and going till i leave the group -
Calling mobiles and landlines - Cannot call for two days
I pay unlimited monthly subcription call to Thailand, but I cannot call any number for two days.What wrong? Also I tried calling several uk mobile and landline numbers, but didn't work.
I obviously want to use the mobiles subscription for mobiles only, but I need to call landlines as well. How would it work if I buy a limited subscription for landlines and one for both landlines and mobiles, would Skype select automatically the subscription or should I do it manually? And, if automatically, what would be Skype criteria, I read it would be "more minutes left", wouldn't it be the best rate instead?

Abstract classes and constructors - cannot call abs. methods in CONSTRUCTOR
Let me explain the scenario:
I'm building a program in which I need to read a file (among other things) and I intend to use object orientation to it's fullest in doing so. I thought of creating an abstract FILE class which has the commonalities, and two subclasses SERVER_FILE and PC_FILE, which implement the abstract method GET_CONTENTS in different ways (OPEN DATASET / GUI_UPLOAD), same for the CHOOSE method which allows to select the file from it's corresponding source.
Initially I've used an interface but since another tasks like setting the file path are common for both, switched to an ABSTRACT class.
Now, the problem is, from the main code I intend to use a FILE reference to handle either type of file. At the instantiation moment I'd like the path attribute to be set; if it was not set by parameter, i'd like to call the CHOOSE method which is abstract for the superclass. Since this is common for either subclass, I need a way to code it once in the superclass. But I get an error because the CHOOSE method is abstract.

On a 4.6c system this code gave me a dump, while on my NW7.0 SP it doesn't even activate with the following error:

- Following some suggestions from Java forums i've tried to define the constructor in the base class as PROTECTED or PRIVATE instead, then calling super->constructor from the subclasses, but I get this error in german:

- I've also thought of defining the CHOOSE method as a class (not instance) one, then calling it before creating the file object which maybe solves the problem, but I see that approach more "procedural oriented" which i'm trying to avoid.
- Of course I could define a constructor for each subclass, but both would have exactly the same code.
I'm really lost on how should I code this. My main focus is on avoiding code dupplication.
I hope someone with more OO experience can see what I'm trying to do and sheds some light.

When i saw your code, you are trying to access an astract method CHOOSE(which is actually implemented in sub class) from the constructor of the base class which is not possible. By this time, we don't know which sub class it is refering to, so it gives an error. I see two solutions for this..
1. To define constructor in sub class and call the choose method from the consturctor of the sub class(which in this case is reputation of the same again for each sub class)
2. Remove the calling of choose method from the constructor of the main class and call it separately(after creating the object). By now we know which sub class we are refering to. I would have designed the program in the following way.

After the last Thunderbird update 24.4.0, attachments no longer open. Attempt to open attachment flashes a message quickly but not long enough to read. I get the following errors in the error log with every attempt to open a document like word.

Under tools I have Word docs set to open with Microsoft Word. What are these errors and why can't I no longer open Word documents?
In addition I also receive multiple warnings at the same time such as Unknown property 'mso-style-type'. Declaration dropped.

Firefox will not recognize the backup file for bookmarks. It says "unable to process backup file". There is no places.sqlite file to delete. There is nothing in the profile folder
I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6. -
I have an iphone 4 and an HP Pavillion with windows 7. I always have been able to connect my iphone to my laptop and open
the DCIM folder and see the picture icons so I can pick the ones I want to download. After upgrading to iOS8 I cannot see the icons after a
few seconds of connecting the phone to the computer. They all turn into the windows icon.

Hi All, I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7.1.1 on my IPAD last night , reluctant as every upgrade which promises fixes which dont impact me causes problems that do , which I fix via this community. Today I can no longer access my WIFI at home, my non Apple devices all work fine.I have tried all the online suggestions I can find for this, reset facgtory settings, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', I try to reconnect and it asks for my password which I know is correct and it says it cannot access my network. It can access an unsecured one I believe, but that is not ideal. Any fresh suggestions would be really welcome, please. Many thanks
