Latest Version of Mavericks running slooooow

Running OS X 10.9 on my iMac.  Ever since I dowloaded my latest OS update in the last two weeks or so, everything on my computer is running very slow, very clunky.  For the first time since switching to Apple, I feel like I'm back on a dreaded PC.  Anyone else having this problem?  Is there a fix, or a fix in the works?  Thanks.

Apple won't say if there is a 'fix' & the users here are mostly other Mac users so we can't answer that at all.
The real question is why is your Mac slow & a lot of other people are OK with 10.9.
If you have installed lots of software & not updated it there is potential for that to cause issues.
Please see many of the 'why is Mavericks slow threads' for ideas.

    Hi Mary ..
Afraid not but if you decide to use iCloud and you're iPhone is running iOS 8, (according to your profile), hold off until you can upgrade your Mac to Yosemite.

    Hi stuartosachuk,
Please type chrome://plugins in the Chrome address bar. Then, disable 'Chrome PDF Viewer' and enable 'Adobe Reader' plug-in as shown in the screenshot below:
Now, close the Plug-ins tab and restart Chrome.

  • Virus is hijacking browser; already downloaded latest version and have run Stopzilla repeatedly.

Picked up a nasty virus which periodically opens a new Firefox browser, with several windows opening at the same time. I use TrendMicro and Stopzilla as defense against spyware and viruses. I ran full scans with both (multiple times with each one) and isolated quite a few instances of infection. Thought it might be smart to install the latest version of Firefox as well. I overwrote the old version so as not to lose my bookmarks and passwords. Must still have infection, because the weird browser thing is still happening. Any suggestions for better software to end this?

'''''Don't do anything!''''' They're trying to entice or scare you into installing something that isn't an official update from Mozilla, and will install unwanted Malware on your computer instead ''(or on a Mac might not do anything)''.
Firefox doesn't use "popup windows" for notification of an update being available. It uses an in-browser message bar. ''Sorry, I can't show you a screenshot of what that message looks like; I do manual updates on the morning each new version is scheduled to be released and haven't seen that message for a number of years.''

  • Just downloaded Yosemite to my iMac (was using latest version of Maverick) and all I get is white screen.

I just attempted to download and install Yosemite OS to my iMac (was using Maverick v. 10.9.5)
After the install and restart, the computer freezes at a white screen and will proceed no further with finalizing the installation.

Appears that you have a hosed installation. Boot into recovery mode and reinstall the OS. Once back up and running, check to see which OS was installed. If Mavericks, then try another Yosemite installation. Hopefully, you saved a copy of that installer outside of /Applications; otherwise, you'll have to waste time, electricity, and bandwidth downloading the ill-designed installer app which blows itself away as part of its installation process.

I have had a recent fraudulent set of withdrawals from a an account which is managed online via an iMac, using Mavericks 10.9.2.  Bank believes that malware on the iMac may be the source.  Is this a possibility?  Apple experts say it is highly unlikely.

Unless the bank can PROVE that the unauthorized withdrawals were initiated FROM that Mac... They're blowing smoke up your backside.

  • Latest version of Why is the latest version of Firefox running slow?

Firefox is running very slow, some pages slower than others, Like Ebay is impossible to scroll down the page. Even this page is slow. I have reset, deleted bookmarks, tabs, nothing helps. I have used Firefox for a few years, but now have had to use Opera which is super fast.
    Thomas

You might already have reviewed the suggestions in this article, but if not: [[Firefox is slow - How to make it faster]].
Since Flash is used pervasively on the web, as a diagnostic, could I suggest this test: set the Flash player to "click to play" so that sites require your permission to use it. Firefox should load the rest of the page more quickly and you can decide whether the site needs to be able to use Flash. (Sometimes it's just for analytics, super-cookies, or to play ads.)
    Here's how:
Open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins.
On the right side, look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".
When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar (looks like a small lego block) and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.
    Do pages load any faster?

  • HT6114 My Outlook keeps forcing me to Quit after opening usually I get 30 seconds then it shuts down. This has only occurred since I installed the latest version of Mavericks 10.9.2, I'm off to the Apple store to see if it can be fixed.

Following 10.9.2 update my outlook quits 30 seconds after opening it, anyone experiencing the same issue?

@Bee, there is no update patch from Microsoft since the 10.9.2 OS update. I'm not sure if this will help with the OP's issue but I found a fix for my issue. Just hold down the Option key when launching Outlook. It will launch a Database Utility that backs up the original identity and reloads it. It worked fine after that and all my emails were in tact (thank goodness).

  • What's the latest version running on an old G5 PPC?

    Guys,
I want to re-activate my old G5 to speed up rendering/transcoding jobs using distributed computing.
However, I can't find out what's the latest version of Compressor running on my PPC?
I found an old version 2.0 on a CD and installed it, doesn't work: qmasterd not running.

AFAIK, it runs fine. Like any iOS update, you'll always find folks with problems. However, the vast majority of users never experience any issues.

  • HT201364 can not update to latest os x mavericks

i am using a 2007 imac running on snow leopard
when i try to download os x mavericks it keeps saying i need 2 GB of space to download even though i have 41.49 GB free
    please help.

As Niel pointed our you are confusing hard drive storage space with RAM (Random Access Memory).
These two things are entirely different concepts.
    Your iMac needs more RAM.
Your year and model iMac can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM.
Seriously advise you purchase and install the full 6 GBs of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can only be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC is the only source for the 6 GB RAM kit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (strongly recommend, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUoMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest version of Mavericks by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing OS X 10.9 Mavericks from the Mac App Store.
    Good Luck!
