Latest version of snow leopard, freezing computer.
This just started yesterday, I was trying to send an email and computer froze. Only way to quit apps was command tab Q...but computer was still frozen, had to hold power button to restart then happened again several times, It may have to do with hitting return or using the numberic keypad. Ideas anyone? Maybe alittle off subject but my computer will not mount dvd's as of 2 weeks ago...I'm under warranty, but live in the middle of nowhere.
I did repair permissions and verify disk.
^ note I have 4 gigs ram, 2.8ghz i7.....I use logic 9.1.6, i haven't done the latest update for that and it shouldn't have anything to do with this as this happens when logic isn't even running. I think it happens when I hit return... probably would happen now if i hit return, or maybe the numeric keypad. Happened trying to send mail yesterday several times and today...filling out a simple form... No, spinning beachball...mouse pointer turns into....cursor, like a capital I Thanks

I can't run any decent browsers with this old dinosaur.....but I'd rather not cough up $600 clams for a new one....

Thanks in advance for help with this.You may also want to upgrade the HD or at least move large libraries onto external disks (since a macmini generally does not move like a laptop an external disk is just another desktop item). 7 GB free will be chewed into hard by SL and you should always have 15-20 GB free to allow OSX room to perform normal operations.

I have a mac book pro that i bought in late 2009. My current software is snow leopard version 10.5.8. I would like to get the new lion operating system but I cant without first getting the latest version of snow leopard. however when I go to update my software it doesnt show that any update is available.
10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;

I want to know what to expect in terms of moving from one OS to another. Having been a Windows guy until last summer, my only experience is going from one version of Windows to another, which is usually a fairly costly purchase. I will want to go to Lion, but as a retired teacher, my income is fixed. I am not looking for a specific price, I am sure that is unknown, but I would just like to know help Apple does these things so I won't be sadly surprised.
Historically Apple has sold OS X upgrades via DVD media however with the advent of the Mac Apple Store that throws another possibility into the mix. That's about as much as I can say as these forums don't allow us to speculate about future products. As for the cost historically Apple has priced OS X upgrades between $29-$129, the last upgrade (Snow Leopard) was only $29 but that was an exception. Again we cannot speculate on these forums about that. The good news is that Apple is unlike Microsoft which makes OS upgrades expensive and complicated. The choice with OS X is do you want a server version (most users don't need one) or a single computer license. The users that buy server versions tend to have a number of Macs they manage from a server, most consumers don't have this issue.

Upgrades on OS X are usually very simple. I've upgraded from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard and each transition has been very easy. With any major OS upgrade there are some basic rules to follow, for example always, always, always backup prior to any update. When Lion is released to the general public post again for what to do to prepare or even do a Google search on "How to prepare for OS X upgrade" and you will find a number of articles that will provide some suggestions and valuable insight. I just bought a new MacBook Pro. I managed to transfer everything from my older MacBook Pro to the new one. Both use Snow Leopard, the latest update.
My new one has the newest trackpad, the old one, no.
I'm have big problems using Text Edit on the new laptop--the curser does not go where I want it to go for editing, I cannot get the text to be a clear or as large
as with the older Laptop. Similarly, I cannot find a way to enlarge the menu bar. But the text edit is my biggest problem right now. I have reviewed all the preferences, particularly those in Universal Access, to no avail.
I finally gave up, used dropbox to send the text edit document to my old laptop, and continued with ease. But this is not the way it should work. I bought the
new laptop because the old one is showing signs of age.....

The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem. Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page. Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.) -

Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. The dialog will display the installed version.

Latest version of Snow Leopard on CD?
Is it possible to get Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on CD? My internet connection isn't the swiftest and if I have to buy an earlier version and then download some sort of update it's going to be problematic for me. Thanks.
If there's an Apple Store or similar facility nearby, ask them to burn the current combo updater to DVD.

WHAT IS MOST STABLE VERSION OF SNOW LEOPARD
I've just completed a clean install of OS X 10.6.3. My usual methods are to use Software Update to get the latest version of Snow Leopard and I had been using 10.6.7. However lately I have had to do the clean install partly because somewhere along the line I downloaded a Java Update that the permissions would never clear up in Disk Utility. This, I believe, along with a botched setup of Parallels v4.0, my business iMac machine was becoming quite unstable and slow. Note: some of my favored applications are pre 2005 versions running under Rosetta.
However lately I have had to do the clean install partly because somewhere along the line I downloaded a Java Update that the permissions would never clear up in Disk Utility.
We all get those. They are not errors, consequently they will never be "repaired." It just means Apple hasn't updated the Permissions database.
The question should not be which version is the most stable, rather, which version is compatible with third party apps you must have and don't want to lose. As OS updates progress, PPC apps, especially, running under Rosetta, may lose some of their functionality. Updating is important in order to get the latest security patches. So, it's a possible tradeoff.

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:

Then put this link on the drive:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first. -
Are Different Versions of Snow Leopard specific to different Macs?
I've seen on eBay new copies of Snow Leopard that says they will only install on certain Macs, with wording like "These discs will work only with the correct computer listed above." And in the photos of the disks you can sometimes see them labeled with the name of a Mac type, such as an iMac. Yet when I go to the Apple Store to buy Snow Leopard there aren't different versions for different computers. Will any version of Snow Leopard install on an Intel-based Mac? If so, can it then be updated with the latest verion? I have an early 2008 model 4,1 MacBook Pro.
Apple when they include the hardware specific DVD with Mac, never sold them in the stores. All they sold is the generic one that worked on all Mac.
It is only on eBay that you see the gray DVD which are hardware specific for sales.
I tend to avoid purchasing from eBay because so many of the seller don't know what they are doing so they are now able to give you the correct data.

Acrobat Pro Not Working after Latest Update to Snow Leopard
After getting the latest update for Snow Leopard I get the following when Acrobat tries to boot:

First try removing preference and or .plist files for Acrobat. Then when you get working try this tip below that might help when you update the application and it fails.

The language of your Snow Leopard has nothing to do with whatever version of Windows you want to run, which you will have to do via Bootcamp or one of the virtual apps like Fusion or Parallels.
If you do want to change the language of your Snow Leopard, it can be done in a few seconds by moving a different language to the top of the list in system prefs/language & text/language and then logout/login. -
What exactly is the newest QuickTime version for Snow Leopard
The current download on the Apple.com for quicktime is the version 7.xx, so is for Quicktime pro.
But the version on my new macbook pro is 10.xx
So what exactly is the newest version? And is there a pro version for 10.xx?
