Latex, bibtex "command not found" in Snow Leopard

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have MacTex installed (and reinstalled since the OS upgrade). In iTerm (or any other terminal), my computer no longer recognizes bibtex or pdflatex commands. If I type, say, bibtex filename.aux (in the directory containing filename.aux), it returns "-bash: bibtex: command not found").
I have tried typing the whole path for bibtex, the file I want to process, or both (e.g., usr/texbin/bibtex ~/Documents/writing/filename.aux), but it still doesn't work. Even if I'm in usr/texbin, where bibtex is, it won't recognize bibtex as a command.
I added a file in etc/paths.d that consists of usr/texbin, and when I type echo $PATH, usr/texbin appears, so that's not the problem, I don't think.
Any advice that anyone can give to get bibtex working by command line (since I don't know of any other way to use it) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you might get better help with this if you ask in the Mactex forum rather than here. it certainly sounds like your Mactex install is messed up and I would reinstall it from scratch. uninstall the current distro first.

BTW, when you do get it working, FYI, you can invoke bibtex from GUI interface in TexShop. just go to Typeset menu->bibtex. I never do it from command line personally.

  • Epson Perfection 2480 Scanner... not found under Snow Leopard

Snow Leopard won't find my scanner! It's there in Printer Sharing (why? who knows? it's not a printer) but if I click on it there's "no scanner found" Image Capture can't find a scanner attached. Epson's scanner software hangs. Any ideas? Nothing has changed except the install of Snow Leopard.

Thanks. I reinstalled it (again) and it worked - third time lucky, I guess. Not sure why it didn't work after the other reinstalls. I suspect that there are various drivers on the Epson site, and I may have downloaded the wrong one(s) previously.
The Epson Scan software works again and Image Capture now finds the scanner -- although if I use one I can't use the other.

  • Printer not found under snow leopard

    Hi
I have just bought a new iMac to replace my 7 year-old iMac. I have an HP Laserjet 6L printer that worked quite happily on the old machine (OS 10.4) using Gimp/CUPS. It connects with a USB/parallel port cable.
Today I'm trying to get the printer to work with the new machine, but I'm getting nowhere. When I go to print and fax in system prefs it says "no printers are available". When I click the "+" to add a printer, the list in the "Add printer" window is empty and everything is greyed out. I did put the install disk in and installed printer support for all printers but that hasn't helped
    thanks in advance.
    david

    Hello David,
My thought is that you were probably using AppleTalk to connect to this printer from 10.4. AppleTalk was a multicast protocol and thus it would advertise the printer on the network so that you could see it to add.
AppleTalk has been discontinued in OS X 10.6, hence no printer is seen when you select to add. So you need to use some other protocol to connect to your printer from your new iMac. I believe your LJ will support IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket as a protocol, however you have probably never had the printer configured with an IP address so that would be your first task. This may require referring to the manual or contacting HP if no one on this forum can provide you with the necessary steps.
Once you have an IP address set in the printer, you can then add the printer by selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket. You can then enter the IP address of the printer, leave the queue name as is, change the name from the IP address to something more meaningful and in the Print Using menu, look for your HP LJ6L PPD (or use the Gimp/Gutenprint driver if necessary).

  • -bash: sudo: command not found

         Hello all,
I have had WAY too many problems with this laptop, and at this point in its miserable little life, I've decided to just wipe the hard drive and start fresh, not caring at all what happens to the files left on there. As previously stated in one of my earlier questions (That was, might I add, never fully answered.), this late 2008 MacBook (aluminum) has a problem where it does not boot up, and just endlessly shows the gray spinning pinwheel. Four months later, that just stops, and now when trying to boot up with my normal startup disk, it brings me right to the Recovery disk and tries to reinstall OS X. I tried, it failed 5 minutes in. So I tried to wipe the hard drive, and it says:  Disk Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk.   I looked it up and I saw that if I went into the Terminal and typed: sudo diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk0 , it would unmount the disk. But whenever I type that, it says: -bash: sudo: command not found. I have no idea how to fix this, and I would really like to be able to use my laptop again without giving somebody my money to do it for me.
                                                 Thanks,

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You may then open App Store, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar, and re-download any OS X upgrade you purchased except Mavericks. Since Yosemite has been released the App Store may not let you re-download Mavericks, but it will let you download Yosemite.

  • My iMac will not boot through Snow Leopard but will boot through Windows OS

My 2010 iMac will not boot in Snow Leopard, only Windows. Have tried reinstalling Snow leopard a few times and works only for a couple of minutes before freezing and doesnt reboot. Windows works perfect. Snow leopard just doesnt want to boot up past the Apple Logo. It was working fine one day and the next day it froze up and was able to reboot back into Snow Leopard but kept freezing. Now it doesnt load at all into Mac OS.

    Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
    Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.
    http://www.brokenhomeboy.co.uk/pierow/blog/2011/10/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-l eopard-install-disc/
2: Make a SL bootable USB
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
3: Call Apple for a new 10.6.3 disk (and make copies for backup before Apple discontinues selling it)
If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

  • -bash: make: command not found

Help me please. I downloaded cdrecord because I need a tool called makeisofs but I am told that I need to compile it first before I can use it. The directions say to type "make" to compile it but when I type make in the terminal window, I get the following message:
    -bash: make: command not found
I've spent hours looking all over the web for an explanation but I just can not find anything to help me. I even joined some IRC channels but no one types anything in those rooms. It is the weirdest thing.
Can anyone tell me why I can't compile? The directions I got with the download don't explain a thing.

I found something that might help. On the second Leopard DVD, there is something called Xcode Tools which I am told has what I need. I'll respond if I have any other questions. Thanks for reading.

  • WxPerl not working in snow leopard

    Hello,
wxPerl seems to be not working in Snow Leopard.
    The command:
    wxPerl -e "use Wx;"
    Gives:
    Can't find 'boot_Wx' symbol in /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/Wx/Wx.bundle
    at -e line 1
Compilation failed in require at -e line 1.
    BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at -e line 1.
    Is this a known bug ? Is there a work-around ?
    Regards.

    Thanks!
I did both of what you suggested (and provided very detailed specifics of the wxPerl broken code) and was told:
1st Case (Feedback): No response to my feedback
2nd Case (ADC bug report): No response after obtaining an ADC account and filing a bug report
Next, I wrote a letter to Apple, addressed to the "Macintosh Software Development Manager," providing details of the wxPerl broken code problem, the "Problem Details and System Configuration" error log from one of the many failures while trying to launch the TivoTool 0.7.0 application, remarked on the length of time that this wxPerl code has been broken (broken in 10.5.x & 10.6.x software releases) and detailing how this is disabling the TivoTool application and any other user that is dependent on wxPerl functioning. I asked that a trouble report be opened, the problem resolved, and the fix be made part of a software update. Additionally, I requested an estimated date for this resolution to be included in a software update.
I also sent a copy of this letter and enclosures, along with a cover letter, respectively addressed to Mr. Steve Jobs, asking that he provide the proper resources to clear this long time defective code.
Within a couple of weeks (on March 5, 2010) I received a telephone call from an Apple Executive Contact (named "Nate"), due to the letter addressed to Mr. Jobs. After gathering details on the broken wxPerl code, he promised to contact the software development folks and get back to me with his findings. Within a week of this initial contact, he again telephoned (on March 9, 2010) to say that he had contacted the software development folks, provided the information from my broken wxPerl report, that a trouble ticket was opened on the wxPerl broken code problem, and that the wxPerl broken code problem appeared to be a "low runner," e.g. not many users had reported the wxPerl broken code. Additionally, since the broken code was a "low runner," there was no target date to fix the wxPerl broken functionality.
He suggested, until the wxPerl broken functionality was resolved, that I might want to keep a 10.4.x System hard drive available, so that when I needed the wxPerl functionality, I could boot my Mac under 10.4.x, perform my wxPerl work (e.g. use TivoTool), and then re-boot again later, under 10.6.x to use the TivoTool obtained files.
He also suggested that I make sure that the Software Update System Preference be enabled to automatically check for updates ("Scheduled Check" tab). He added that I shouldn't rule out that the wxPerl broken code functionality might one day be resolved through a Software Update.
I was given a case number, for future reference and to allow me to check the status of my wxPerl broken functionality trouble report.
As my dad used to say, "That's all she wrote."
So, because this is a "low runner" (e.g. not many people have noticed and reported the broken wxPerl code), I'd be surprised (but very delighted) to see a wxPerl fix delivered by Apple in the near future. After all, wxPerl has been broken since leaving Mac OS 10.4.x (wxPerl broken in 10.5.x and 10.6.x software releases).
I last spoke to Nate regarding this issue on Mach 9, 2010.
I have not included Nate's telephone number out of a courtesy to Nate, as he is not a technical person, only a contact that handles issues which have been escalated to Apple executives.
The Apple Case Number assigned was: 153683921
Regards to all involved and all effected.
    Thanks -
    - Dale

It looks like the configure script was botched. It wants to run the APXS apache program, but the APXS variable isn't defined. APXS, however, doesn't seem to be required by the configure script.
Sorry. I can tell you why it dies, but I can't do much about fixing it. If you really want it, you should install the apache APXS stuff. I think it is the apache developer kit.

    Hi!
After 6 hours of experimenting, disconnecting devices, formatting my hard drive (joy!) and getting nowhere, I found the problem: apparently, Leopard has trouble dealing with some characters in the volume name (in my case it was '). Rename the volume to something simple, short and with no weird characters and the Leopard will install.
And, to Apple: I'm very disappointed with the quality of the Leopard install. If a character is valid in OS X, the setup should support it!
    Best regards,

  • -bash: ssh: command not found = no ssh?

    Hi all,
Sorry if this isn't the right category - this seemed to be the best fit.
    I'm having trouble with SSH.
I've used ssh in the past (back when I was running Leopard) but I've never had all that much use for it. Today, however, I opened up terminal to SSH to an iMac on my local network, and got the following back:
    -bash: ssh: command not found
Having a look around on the internet, somebody else said that they got this message but was still able to see the SSH manual by typing ssh man. However, when I tried this I just got "command not found" again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    BrutalSpoon.

Do you remember if you modified .profile or .bash_profile when you installed mysql?
I guess you could search for the file that has the modification
    /usr/bin/grep /usr/local/mysql/bin $HOME/.[a-z]*
Once you find the file, edit that file and put a dollar sign infront of PATH
    /usr/bin/nano /name/of/file/with/mysql/bin/in/it
The entry you want to fix most likely looks like
    export PATH=PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin
you want to change this to
    export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/mysql/bin
The problem is the missing dollar sign $ which would cause the current PATH to be substituted before the addition of /usr/local/mysql/bin.
Once the change is made, quit Terminal and relaunch it. The corrected PATH should now work.
NOTE: If you do not want to use nano you could use TextWrangler (via File -> Open Hidden...), or Smultron (via File -> Open Hidden...). You should be able to find these GUI based text editors via <http://versiontracker.com>.
    Good luck.

I opened the contents of the application and run the shell script for opening aplication there it worked very fine and application started working.. But if i open application directly through launchpad or finder it doesnt show up and console
I tried running those commands in the terminal directly there they work.. But dunno whats wrong in here. and even if try to open the application through the terminal it all opens fine.. what could be the possible problem, is it with my mac..?

i finally figured out the problem.. it is with the environmental variables.  the path for all those commands like "grep" is not being set for the GUI applications.  that is why i got that error.
for those GUI applications which require path, we have to set path in the file /etc/launchd.conf  the environmental variables set in here are used by the gui applications and those which are launched through spotlight.
that file may bot be present in most of the macs. No problem even if not present,we can create one and use.
    so  type in terminal
              $ sudo vi /etc/launchd.conf
