Latex + phonetic symbols

Hi,
I've switched to Lyx for text creation needs some time ago (will learn latex when I have the time...) and I wanted to use phonetic symbols. I can enter the code without problems just as described in the manual, but it will fail on compilation with the error message "An empty output file was generated."
It seems that a module "tipa.sty" is missing (that's the next error message), does anyone know where I can get it and where I have to install it? I'm using lyx 1.4.3 and tetex 3.0 from the official repositories.
For now I've used the \int symbol, which is very similar to the phonetic symbol for the German [sch], but I would like to use the power latex offers me.

I'm a new archlinux user so maybe I'm missing some distro-dependent way of doing it, but the following is quite distro-agnostic.
If you're looking for any latex style-file (ending in .sty) that you can include in your preamble with \usepackage{packagename} (I have never used lyx before though, so maybe lyx hides the \usepackage directives) then you can always go to www.ctan.org to get that file. In this case this is what you're looking for.
Now put that file in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/[packagename] (create the folder. It's cleaner that way) and don't forget to
sudo texhash
so latex finds the new files.
If you're a linguist, you can always consult LaTeX for Linguists. A really great site for anything that involves LaTeX and linguistics! It has helped me out at more than one occasion, but I don't know how you will get along with the tips there and LyX - as I've already said, I've never used it before

Character viewer - phonetic symbols

Hi,
My character palette/viewer has changed after upgrading to ML.
Whilst still on Snow Leopard, the palette showed an extensive list including the phonetic symbols I use for teaching English. I was able to add those I needed to my 'Favourites' list for easy access.
Now, that favourites list has gone, I cannot find a reference to phonetic symbols at all, and only a much smaller list is available. All I have access to are: Arrows, parentheses, punctuation, currency symbols, pictographs, bullets/stars, math symbols, letterlike symbols, emoji and Latin.
Anyone know what I have to do to find these symbols, please? Any help would be appreciated.

Go the the gear wheel at the top left and select customize, then check the boxes for the categories you want, including Unicode.

Technophobe having Phonetic Font Trouble :( :( :(

Hi All!
Im currently trying to write my university dissertation and need to use phonetic symbols! I have found a font to download (Doulous Sil) and downloaded it from their website. The folder containing the font was downloaded onto my computer as normal (and can be found in downloaded items box). However, Im not sure what to do now! I've dragged the font into library/fonts and fontbook but can't access it from Word at all I've tried on my ibook G4 and my dads new iMac!
Please help! (As if dissertations weren't stressful enough!!)

Are you using WordX? It can't do Unicode and so it can't use modern fonts like that. You need to use Word2004, TextEdit, Pages, Mellel, Nisus Writer Express, NeoOffice, or OpenOffice.
Or you could perhaps use the old pre-Unicode fonts, but I would advise against it as Unicode is the agreed international standard.

Fonts and symbols

I'm currently attempting to write a large number of phonetic symbols, which I access using the character palate. But when I enter them, they aren't written in times new roman, but some other font (e.g. Lucia Grande or Monaco) which I can't change, and it really messes up the page. I was wondering if there was some way round this at all? I've heard of something called unicode which might help, but I don't have the first clue about how to use it.

It's quite simple..
The New Roman type face doesn't have those extended characters within it's suitcase. That's why your system tries to use an alternative font. There is a way around this, but it means you have to get your hands dirty and create those additional characters yourself or find an alternative version online.
Unicode is just a different way for encoded a page, it's mainly used for websites, xml system files and various text files but it doesn't relate to the actual font itself.

How to download InDesign ME or any other support to Japanese (Furigana)

How can I find a link to download InDesign ME (Middle East)? I need to do a book of 60 pages in Japanese (Furigana). Is there another way to write from right to left and start in the last page of the publication from the beggining, using "normal" InDesign?

It is worth mentioning that furigana are a special sub-set of Japanese typography, little phonetic symbols placed above or beside characters; these are often referred to as "ruby text," or in MS Word as "Phonetic Guide." If all you need is to set regular-size kanji and kana text in vertical columns right-to-left then you might be able to get by with the TechArt templates for InDesign in any language, still available from TransPacificDigital. But real furigana introduce a whole new level of complexity.
Two things worth keeping in mind about Japanese versions of ID: 1) they cannot co-exist on the same system with the same version in another language; and 2) last time I looked (and unlike Quark) they only allowed a Japanese interface. Harbs' World Tools Pro avoids both.

Investigation of this issue reveals that both a .dvi and a .ps file is created successfully with the formula, but pstoedit seems to produce an empty .svg file.
Can anyone shed some light onto why pstoedit seems to fail? I have used this functionality not long ago, am I missing something?

Neat, this inspired me to try the Latex Inkscape extension because I never knew about it. I got the same behaviour as you. When I tried running "pstoedit -f plot-svg eq.ps eq.svg" in the temporary directory myself, I got:

It seems like the current ghostscript is newer than what pstoedit expects. Haven't managed to fix it though :S.

Problem with norwegian 'special characters' (æøå) in LaTeX

Having installed just about every latex-package in the repos I still cant get this to work. This is what I have in my .tex file:

What characters are you trying to put into math mode?
Generally, with regular LaTeX, you can't put special characters in math mode. You need to use the LaTeX symbol commands instead. For example, use \rightarrow and not →. The only exception would be if you were using XeLaTeX rather than regular (pdf)LaTeX, which generally has better Unicode support, especially if you had loaded the unicode-math packge: but that's still considered in beta status, I believe.
You can also escape to text mode inside math with the \text command from the amsmath package, e.g., $\text{ÆØÅ}$ should work.

It is possible there is an app containing a phonetic keyboard in the app store (or not). I haven't had use for one, so have never checked. Using it would require some copy and past on your part. But it might worth a search.
Oh, just to be clear (should have googled and not trusted my aging memory) you're basically looking for an upside-down "e", right?

TeX 9 - LaTeX ftplugin with lots of firepower

Some of you might be interested in trying out my Vim ftplugin TeX 9. If you like to prepare your LaTeX documents with Vim, chances are that you already use some ftplugin for that (LaTeX-Vim, ATP...). So why bother with TeX 9? I wrote it because I thought I could achieve everything LaTeX-Vim does in fraction of the SLOCs and I didn't want to automate the compilation/edit cycle like ATP. After all, Vim is an editor and LaTeX documents are not meant to be WYSIWYG in nature. In similar vein I wanted the ftplugin to be as Vimish as possible and not step on your toes, or fingers I should say.

The latest version is available from Vim.org and from GitHub after they sync with Vim.org. The version 1.3.13 contains some small fixes I've come up with over this year. For example, you can now configure TeX-9 to use the -shell-escape flag which is required when using Minted for syntax highlighted code listings.

Okaay, I'm reloaded! Get TeX-9 1.3.7 from Vim.org. This is a bugfix release of the 1.3.1 I published a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to the Archers who have helped me in debugging.

I don't use NERDTree myself but TeX 9 is designed to play nicely with other buffers and windows, be they latex documents or other source code. If you want to try out TeX 9 and have vim-latex already installed, it's best to unzip the tarball from vim.org to a location of your choice and rename your "~/.vim" to "~/vim" say. Then you can say

in your .vimrc. To revert to vim-latex, well, do the opposite: remove that line and rename vim back to .vim.
This is to avoid conflicts that could arise because of vim-latex. If I remember correctly, it's not possible to disable or remove vim-latex very easily. If you like my script and would like to use it permanently, you would then need to somehow manually remove vim-latex. In contrast, if you would like to disable my script, you can say in your .vimrc.

LaTeX brackets don't display correctly (jsMath)

I'm currently working with OLAT (a java based web application to manage lectures) and try to write some text containing LaTeX code inside (there is a html text editor which allows the use of LaTeX formulas via jsMath). When I try to display large brackets around a vector (with more than two rows), schematically :

, the brackets aren't visible and there are some symbols instead (look at the screenshots). For shorter vectors (up to two rows), the problem doesn't appear.
Note that I encounter this problem on Firefox 27.0.1, both on Linux (Kubuntu 13.10) and Windows (7), but for instance not with other browsers (chromium, rekonq, etc.). Interestingly, someone tried this on a 27.0.01 version of Firefox under Archlinux, and the large brackets seems to be displayed correctly. It also seems to be working on Internet Explorer 9, 10 and 11.

Well, the page inspector seemed indeed to indicate that those specific jsMath fonts were required... and it solves the problem ! Shame on me not to have checked that additional point... And thank you for your help !

However, there's still something that I don't quite understand : without the jsMath fonts installed on my OS, the page displayed correctly within some other browsers running on the same machine, is there a particular explanation or does Firefox work in a different way when it comes to those font problematics ?

LaTeX fonts not working with 10.5.1

I use TeXShop to produce LaTeX documents. After "upgrading" to Leopard, I seem to have lost the required fonts and what is substituted looks awful and doesn't reproduce the Maths symbols correctly. Any ideas on how to restore my fonts?

Symbol font not displaying

I'm creating a presentation and I need to use Greek letters. The symbol font is installed on my computer (font book sees it an displays it properly). Keynote 2.0.2 does not want to use this font. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to fix this? I have done 'duct tape' solutions like using LaTeX to create a pdf that shows the desired character and then importing it as an image, but that is not ideal.

I solved it by switching to the MMGreek font. Didn't even know I had it. It's a little counterintuitive ('mu' is not linked to 'm') but it'll work. I guess I should look through my whole list before I get too excited.

CJK-Latex

I use latex a lot to write my lab reports for physics. Everything works fine, I am using the vim latex-suite from aur and tetex. Now i need to write a paper for linguistics and I'd like to use latex for it since it has very nice fonts for the phonetic alphabet. the problem is that I also need to use japanese characters in the paper. I tried installing cjk-latex following this website

Has anybody successfully installed cjk-latex in archlinux?

I know you are not using xelatex. However, I think that if you have the texlive fonts added to fontconfig's cache, that xelatex will find those which are good for Japanese along with other system fonts which are suitable for Japanese (but won't work with regular latex). I haven't tried this but it looks at least plausible.

Here is a tester: Displaying Math Symbols.

I dont know if any of you have ever used it but in word you can isert this object called Microsoft Equation 3.0. This is a really nice little took allowing you to write math equations. Now i need something like this in my app. The user needs to be able to put a definate integral symbol in the text area (or sum area where they can enter text).
An example:
Say the user wants to start the line with a definate integral symbol he/she should be able to hit a button, they will then be promted for the bounds i.e 0 and 1. This symbol will then be displayed in the writing field just like any other text.
Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice of what i should do. Is there an API in the jdk or a 3rd party API? Or will it be much more difficult?

I've seen Java programs that include/embed the Gecko HTML rendering engine, just so they can display mathematical formulas.I like that idea. I've never tried it.The idea might be fine, but it's a mess to set up, if it's not bundled perfectly using some installer. Especially since many current Gecko builds have problems with MathML, you need to find exactly the correct build for it to work right ... And since the particular program in question also put some UI elements in the HTML together with the MathML the UI look .... quite patchworky (the rest of the UI was created using SWT).
