Latitude D810 v Macbook Pro 15.4
Hello all.
I'm attending college this fall and am in need of a laptop. I am not a hardcore gamer but World of Wacraft and Star Wars Empire at War are my favorites now. I currently have a 3.2GHZ Dell desktop with 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Basically, I want a laptop that isn't a huge monstrosity but can game and do everyday stuff well.
I am a Mac enthusiast but I realized a year or so ago that I cannot operate solely based on a Mac due to my gaming habits - I just ended up going back to this desktop. This might change in college but I don't want to take a ~$2,000 risk.
Anyways...! I was interested in the Dell Latitude D810, as it seemed to have a good, non-integrated video card and great speed: http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/latit_d810?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s= bsd
However, after finding out about boot camp (http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/), I became very intrigued. I realize Boot Camp is in Beta but once the kinks are worked out and the product is released, would it be safe to say running Win XP on the Macbook Pro would be similar to the Latitude D810?
I have to say I'm not the best with processor numbers, difference between mobility and desktop, etc. - but if I prefer the Mac hardware, and it can run the Windows OS I sometimes may need for games, AND it runs at a similar, if not better, speed than any Windows-based laptop, why not go with the Macbook?
I would highly appreciate any insight people have on this matter. I may be totally confused about what exactly Boot Camp is, but I hope I'm not.
Thanks guys
Matt
Windows XP Pro
Hello again MattG7,
Close your eyes and buy is the only way to servive when your going to buy a top of the line machine like the MBP. I garantee you'll see some other machine in 6 months that is faster and better. But with a Mac you usually look at the investment as 2.5-4 years not 1.5 for a Dell. I downloaded the SigmaTel drivers from thier site and it works. You unfortunately have to connect the headphone to the IN sound port! But it works great!
I've been playing HL2 for awaile now and it just plain rocks. XP is just as stable as any other installation I've been on and I've supported them for years. (stable for XPSP2;-)
In the end it's a question of Quality and Community that should be at the top of your list.
If your not in desperate need of a gamming machine I would suggest the top of the line MacBook (white) instead of the MBP mainly because it's just as fast as the MBP but not in the graphics department.
I want 256MB because I'm a gamer, if you run WoW you'll be fine on a MacBook if you want to run the latest and greatest FPS with everything set high then MBP is for you.
MBP 2.0Ghz/100GB HDD/1GB ram/x1600 256MB Mac OS X (10.4.6) XP Pro Media Center Edition

Is lack of support on Macbook Pros enough to go with a Dell?
I posted here about a month ago about what kind of Dell laptop to get, actually, whether the Dell Ubuntu laptops were sturdy. I came to the conclusion that probably the best Dell would be the business model Latitude D630.
However, my conscience has been aching at me. I really hate Microsoft and Vista and just the THOUGHT of supporting them makes me cringe. I know many others don't care as much as I do, I just DON'T wanna contribute towards that terrible product. No, I won't use it, but that doesn't change the fact that I am buying it and thus supporting it. And with the Dell Latitude D630 you have to get it with Windows.
So I started looking into Macbook Pros. I have always liked Mac OSX and genuinely wouldn't mind dual-booting Arch and Leopard.
HOWEVER, I am concerned. Not only do Macbooks cost so much in general, google and searching at your forum has shown that perhaps support for Mac hardware on Linux still isn't the best. I wouldn't want to buy a computer only to find that it is not really usable with Linux. ;-; Seeing as Linux IS my primary OS.
Well, for starters here is a spec comparison between the two with the specific modifications I would be making:
D630:
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.50GHz) 6M L2 Cache, 800Mhz Dual Core
Video Card: 128MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 135M™
Wireless Card: Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Dual-Band Mini Card
MBP:
Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB
Wireless Card: ??
And it has something called a Double-layer SuperDrive? Okay, I have no idea what that is. XD
So it seems like everything would pretty much run native on the Dell one, while on the Macbook it would be harder?
Would I get better performance out of the Dell and thus be wasting my money on the Macbook? From google I can see a lot of people have trouble with sound. x_X Would sound just not work and/or be bad quality? That woudn't be good. And with bad performance on the graphics card, skipping, etc. Okay, why? Isn't that all just Nvidia drivers? So the fact it's on a mac shouldn't matter, right? Will the Nvidia on the Dell perform better on Linux than the Nvidia on a Macbook Pro because of this? That just... makes no sense to me.
And the wireless? So is the wireless for the Dell native and the macbook not (for Linux) so the Dell's will perform better? Am I just gonna have a lot of problems trying to run Linux on a Macbook that I can't solve?
I mean, I've googled, but for those who have tried, what are some other problems I haven't mentioned I may have missed?
:? I'm just nervous. I hate Windows so much, but if I spend money on a machine that costs 500 dollars more only to find it performs significantly worse than the cheaper one would have, it would be x_X I'm just worried of possible huge problems. And don't understand precisely why they occur. If all else fails, I can get the Dell. My conscience will just feel REALLY guilty about it.
XD
Last edited by violagirl23 (2008-05-12 04:21:24)If you're thinking about throwing down the dough for a Macbook Pro, I would recommend getting yourself a Lenovo T61. There's even one that comes with openSUSE and no Windows. You will also be able to get a machine with comparable specifications for less money.
I've been on pretty much the same arc as you. I'm looking at purchasing my next machine. I looked at the Dell XPS 1530 and the Latitudes. The Macbook Pro presentation is pretty nice, but when I thought about it, it seemed silly to pay all that money for an OS I wouldn't really use and what was basically commodity laptop hardware. Then I thought I'd look at the ThinkPads. I've got an older T43 that I got as a gift and it is great, but I thought that Thinkpads were much more costly than they really are. To my surprise their prices are very competitive with Dell's prices and they are much lower than Apple's prices. The T61 also looks pretty good, has very good construction quality and generally good Linux support to boot.
Anyway, just my $0.02, I know it's a bit off topic, but you might see something you like.

Have CS 5 Installed on my iMac and works ok. But installed on my new MacBook Pro it won't open NEF files from my Nikon D810. Displays NEF icons, but when I try and open them the response is: Make sure latest RAW updates are installed. If problem persists follow link: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407111. Have installed Bridge 5.0.2.4; Raw Ref Version 7.0.0.308; DNG converter_8_7_1.dmg; Bridge 5.0.2 Update 2. Also same problem with Lightroom which I don't normally use. Lightroom_3_LS11_mac_3_6.dmg installed.
In the link you posted it states that the Nikon 810 requires ACR 8.6 or newer.
Version of ACR are specific to versions of Photoshop. You cannot use 8.6 nor even 7.0.in CS5.
I believe that ACR 6.7 is the latest that will work with CS5, so make sure you have this installed and get rid of ACR 7.
Having 2 versions of ACR will cause problems.
You have already downloaded DNG Converter 8.7.1.
Have you double clicked the DMG file to allow you to install DNG Converter on your computer?
Be aware that DNG converter is a stand-along application and not a plug-in.
You need to open DNG converter at select the FOLDER that contain your .NEF files.
Don't open the folder and try to select individual files, it doesn't work that way.
After converting your D810 files to DNGs you can then open the DNGs in CS5
The problem is your camera didn't exist when CS5 & its version of ACR was developed.
i don't use Lightroom, but the list mentions Lightroom 5.6 as needed to open D819 so your 3.6 version of LR won't cut it. -
One year on MacBook Pro (almost) - disappointed
For Christmas last year, I was offered a 15 inch MacBook Pro. It was, by far, the best present I ever got.
Up until then, I was schlepping around a Dell Latitude. I had had it for six years and that Dell was a reliable little machine, even though it did not have half the cachet of a shiny, aluminum-encased MacBook Pro.
Since December of 2010, I have become an Apple user exclusively. I got an iPhone, and recently got an iPad.
But to me, the most important device in my mini-collection is the MacBook Pro. It is my professional computer, the one I use to write and communicate with.
Shortly after getting it as a present I purchased Office for Mac, the 2011 edition.
Few days after receiving the MacBook Pro, I experienced strange graphics jamming when using Facebook; the screen literally turned into Poltergeist.
I took it back to the Apple store in Tysons Corner, VA and got a new one. This was my first introduction to Apple Computers' great fallability. To discover such a fundamental flaw on a PC would be unheard of.
The problem no longer exists, except for the occasional graphic hiccup (recently, when I would scroll down a web page, stripes of the image would remain frozen in place and get spread over the entire screen like jam as I tried to scroll up and down).
My MacBook Pro often freezes. I see the beachball every other day.
Today I was performing a paste in Word and the application crashed altogether.
Safari has never worked. I start it up and the screen remains blank. I read somewhere in the forums that I can switch to a guest account and use it there. That does work, but to say that that is an impractical solution is an understatement (ie., user settings--passwords, cookies, bookmarks--aren't saved, so that's no good). Why can I not use Apple's Safari on an Apple computer is baffling to me and is very telling. It reveals something fundamentally flawed in the way Apple designs its products. Because if a flaw like this one can make it through their Quality Assurance workflow, guess what? That's an issue.
Another problem is that Mozila used to crash regularly until I turned off some of the browser's features. Now Mozila crashes only every once in a while.
After a year of using Mac, I do not feel secure about this product or this company. I feel like I have a device which is imperfect, a laptop that's fallible, that was assembled carelessly. I feel like the company that is behind the product is full of holes and lack maturity in the way they produce the devices which has made them so famous.
Although I would not go back to PC machines, I am greatly disappointed in Apple's MacBook Pro.
My Dell Latitude never gave me any problems whatsoever. That machine was rock-solid and chugged along, with loyalty.
It would be silly of me to try and convince you of buying a PC -- Macs are sexy and they're cool and that's what you want. But know that you're not getting a machine that's assembled with the same degree of professionalism as a Dell, an IBM or a SONY. Be aware that Macs are fallible machines and that under that beautiful and shiny exterior lies an imperfect core.Sounds like you've been extremely unlucky. Why don't you make apple get you a new one again, if this machine is also flawed?? I have a mac pro and a macbook pro, and even though my mac pro went down today (hopefully something i'll manage to fix), i must say that that machine has been the most stable machine i've ever owned. It's basically been switched on non-stop for 5 1/2 years, the only times i've ever rebooted it has been after installing some software requiring a reboot, and it's always been rock-solid. I've only had my macbook for a year now, but so far it's also a winner. Only thing i dislike about it is the case-design, as it has a spot wich is extremely vulnerable to liquid damage. It's the opening between the screen and the rest of the case. However an opening is needed there for air-flow, but it could be designed in a smarter way.

TS4088- http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
PRINT out a copy of the article as a hedge against "we never heard of this." and take it to your appointment at the genius bar. Do not leave until they have run the special VST test that ends in a remarkable PASSED or FAILED screen. [The typical "overnight bake" will not find this problem].
N.B.> Even if the problem is detected, the time for free replacement may have already passed.
If they refuse to accept it for free repair under the program, the store manager may have additional latitude to help you. You MUST be polite and professional at all times. Apple wants you to be a happy customer. Folks who shout and threaten to sue everyone will never be a happy customer, so all they get is to be shown the door.
If the time has expired and you are not willing to pay for the repair yourself, downgrading Mac OS X will make the problem far less likely to occur. -
Windows 7 install on late 2011 MacBook Pro without bootcamp (performance issues)
Hey guys I'm hoping I can get this issue resolved. I have purchased a late 2011 MacBook Pro (radeon 6750m 1gig). I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 without bootcamp. Having real issues with game performance like world of Warcraft. I have done this with an older unibody Mac and it ran great (for any non believer)... But now this time around I'm getting horrible fps in game. I'm thinking it may be driver related it buy I am having trouble finding the right drivers to see if that's then issue. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Shotgun00 wrote:
That is completely false. There is no real need to leave OS X on the Mac if you don't want to, especially with Win 7 or 8. That may of been true with Windows XP but not anymore.
The problem with leaving OS X installed is then you are really limited with what you can do with the drive. You can only have one Windows partition and if you fool with it at all Windows will no longer boot. you can't even change the OS X partition otherwise Windows would boot
Windows 7 will install all by itself. No need for any Boot loaders or Hack Boot system. Pop the Win 7 DVD in the DVD drive and restart. Windows will be installed all by itself. But you do need the Apple support files.
In the end if you are going to run Windows on a computer by itself then you really should not buy a Mac. The hardware is the same and as to the OPs perceived better built quality I personally do not see it. And if you actually read some of the posts on this and other Mac forums you will see that perceived build quality is just a bunch of hype, in my opinion.
To the OP. You aren't missing anything.
If you had carefully read what I wrote, I merely said that doing the install on a blank drive wasn't a good idea. That's because it can create issues the OP is having. A Mac's hardware is no different than a comparable Windows machine, but the EFI/BIOS/Firmware is. Macs are in something of a no-man's land in this regard, as they have neither an old-school BIOS or modern UEFI of recent Windows-based notebooks. I'm willing to bet that the performance problems the OP is having relates to the fact that a straight EFI install on a modern MBP "enables" (for lack of a better word) automatic graphic switching. The capability manifests, but the functionality is not there. Enterprising individuals have been trying to get graphic switching in Windows to work as it does on the OS X side ever since MacBooks debuted with this abliity but with zero success.
Using Boot Camp bypasses this, as the discreet GPU is enabled full-time in Windows. Thus, you will realize proper performance.
As far as perceived build quality, Apple machines are at the high end of the consumer notebook spectrum. They're certainly better than most of the other machines you can pick up at your local Best Buy, but they fall short of business-class machines such as the Dell Latitude/Precision, HP ProBook/EliteBook, and Lenovo ThinkPad. -
Moving iTunes Library from iPhone 3G to MacBook Pro - Help Please
I bought my first MacBook Pro last Summer and have since bought a second. Problem is, my iTunes library is on my company Dell Latitude 620 and my iPhone 3G. How do I get the library to my MacBook Pro?
thanks! If your iTunes library on your PC at work includes music and video that was not purchased from the iTunes store, you need to transfer your iTunes library from your PC to the Mac that you plan on syncing iTunes content with. This can be done with an external drive, or with CD/DVD media.
If all or most or all of your iTunes library on your PC at work includes music and video that was purchased from the iTunes store along with 3rd party apps, iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
If you haven't already done so, you need to authorize your Mac with the same iTunes account with iTunes that is used with iTunes on your PC at work - with the Mac that you plan on syncing iTunes with.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. -
MacBook pro and uncompressed editing????
I'm about to buy a 2nd edit system (currently running dual G5, AJA IO, with FCP 5 and, 3TB of SATA uncompressed storage) I need this next system to be mobile but still do uncompressed video. I see that you can use the AJA IO with the old MacBooks but you need a PCMCIA FW card with dual FW800 drives raided together to do 10bit uncompressed off of Digi Beta or Beta SP. Is there a pcmcia card slot on the new intel macbooks? Is anyone running this setup with success? I need to buy this thing ASAP and have it running soon. Any ideas?
I wouldn't say you need a 2 drive RAID to handle Uncompressed 10bit standard def. You may have heard this about HD Uncompressed, but it is certainly not true with SD uncompressed. If you plan on uncompressed multistreaming (RT dissolves, RT overlays) then you will need such a system, but it is not necessary for single stream editing. Most FW800 devices can achieve a solid 50MB/sec. This is well over the ~25MB/sec that uncompressed 10bit requires for playback.
If you need dual stream for RT effects, you could go with a FW800 RAIDed harddrive such as Lacie D2 big disk, which has 2 drives sharing a single FW800 bus and can easily achieve 60MB/sec sustained. This is borderline, but should be adequate in most situations. Remember not to attach any FW400 devices to the same bus as the FW800, or you will lose the advantages of FW800. Remember also that all Apple computers except xServe use the same bus for FW400 and FW800 ports, so you should get an ExpressCard if you plan on using FW800 and other devices at the same time.
I believe there are some SATA ExpressCard solutions out there now, and I would strongly recommend these over FireWire800. A single Western Digital Caviar RE2 drive will achieve 65MB/sec sustained speeds on a SATA bus. FW800 devices are a bit slower than native SATA since the data needs to be adjusted through a bridge chip.
Another workflow solution is to work in offline resolution with the macbook. PhotoJPEG at Medium Quality setting is great for the MacBook's internal hard drive and can be used in 720x486 unlike the DV CODEC's that are 720x480. For this reason PhotoJPEG can be swapped with Uncompressed footage easily without the odd issues that other offline formats can cause. Kona likes PhotoJPEG as well.
You might also wish to upgrade your MacBook Pro Hard drive to 160MB 7200. It should achieve speeds in the 50MB/sec range, which is nearly 2x the speed of the standard 4500RPM drive. That might be enough for 2x stream editing, but it would likely drop frames occasionally when dual streaming. Just be sure to render your sequences before outputing to tape to avoid dual streaming.
One last thing: if you're capturing footage from BetaSP, I seriously doubt you'd see a difference between the great DVCPro50 CODEC and uncompressed 10bit. The tape format doesn't really have enough latitude give you more detail than 8bits in my opinion. Digibeta is better in 10bit, but only with extremely clean footage such as film transfer. Most CCD noise or film grain create enough randomness in source footage that banding usually isn't an issue. -
I was considering buying a 15in MacBook Pro and was wondering if it feels lighter and looks thinner than I would expect?
Thanks
Windows XP Slow CeleronWhat are you comparing to? For comparison, I use a Dell Latitude D800 at work. My MBP 15" is thinner and shallower, and is just as wide. However, they appear to have the same weight.
Visually, there's no comparison. About the only thing thinner would be a Sony Viao or one of the Thinkpads.
It's a very slick and clean-looking machine! -
I'm a professional photogrpher and technologist who has long been a PC user. After the recent release of the latest Macbook Pro with Retina display I am considering purchasing one along with a new Cinema Display.
The native resolution for the new Macbook Pro with Retina display is 2880x1800
The native resolution for the Cinema Display with Thunderbolt is 2560x1440
My question is, will the Macbook Pro with Retina display properly scale down to the native resolution of the Cinema Display with Thunderbolt at 2560x1440 OR will it scale down to 1920x1200?
This is critical for me as screen size, clarity, color correction, and pixel count matter very much for my post production workflow.
Before I drop $4,000 on this combination, I want to ensure that I am positive that I'm going to get more out of it for my money than what I'm currently getting with my Dell Latitude E6520 & UltraSharp 24".
Any assistance you can lend would be greatly apprecaited!
Sincerely,
mMIt wouldn't scale on the cinema display at all. It would output 1-to-1 2560x1440 just like a non-retina Mac would. Now, if you were duplicating the screens, rather than extending, then I don't know for sure. I would think it would go by the lowest resolution, with the cinema display at 2560x1440 and the retina screen scaling to match. You may be right though, that the retina would go to the 'most real-estate' setting (1920x1200 equivalent), and scale the cinema display to match.
If you're going to be duplicating the screens, rather than extending, then definitely check it out in-store first. -
File Sharing between Windows PC and MacBook Pro using Internet Sharing
I have a MacBook Pro and a Dell Latitude D820 running Windows XP SP2 and I want to connect both using any of these two options. I do not have a wireless router and I use Sprint 3G data card to access internet.
1) I access the internet using a EVDO data card on my MAC and use Internet sharing to access the internet on my Dell laptop. How do I access the files on my PC from my MAC?
2) I can have two EVDO data cards to access the MAC and PC independently. How can I setup file sharing between Windows laptop and MAC?Hi Dr. Poultry-

POWER CORD DISASTERS FOR MACBOOK PRO'S AND MACBOOKS
What is going on with the power cords and the MacBooks? I have noticed more and more questions about them and now I am mad enough to put my words out there! I have been a faithful Mac user and this is my second. This is, however, not my first problem with their cords. I have been told by a professional that the shafts for the wiring are far too stiff and that is why they keep malfunctioning. This is why many of you have exoposed wiring (very dangerous) and why the wiring is pulling away from both the wall outlet and the plug for the machine. I am now, furious, as I am in the middle of a huge design project and my local dealer (only 1 in a city of 1 million) tells me that Apple is "reconfiguring" the cord and they don't know when it will be available. So where does that leave me or you? I have no power to my MacBook Pro that I spent over $5,000.00 for and no way to get it!! Does anyone out there have any secrets or can you offer any help at all? The next thing you know we will be talking about Apple the way most of us talk about Dell. I mean, c'mon, such a simple problem but not one of the multi-millionaires has done anything to correct it? Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!
Broken Keys? Really? On a Macbook? How hard do you type?
I have owned an iBook (5 years), a 17" PowerBook (4 years), a 15" MacBook Pro (3 months), and a 24" iMac (1 year). So far, the ONLY problem I have had is a bad airport card in the MacBook Pro, which apple promptly replaced at no charge.
If you are not getting good service from your apple store, call apple directly. I find they always resolve the problem. If you get an answer you do not like, talk to a supervisor, and keep going up.
My brother-in-law, whom is much younger than I, owned an iBook and severely (and I mean severely) abused it over a two year period. Broke the screen twice (repaired at no charge), shattered the keyboard (replaced, no charge), cracked the case (replaced, no charge), tore the power cord in half (replaced, no charge), and finally, on the next case break, Apple gave him a brand new MacBook at, again, no charge.
As my company provides me with laptops from other manufacturers (HP, Dell), I can say without reserve that the Mac is by far one of the best built machines (maybe not as tough as a Panasonic ToughBook...) on the market today. The problems I have had with my Dell Latitude over the past four months (bad mouse, keyboard, fan, hard drive, in that order) makes my macs all that much more wonderful.
Also, what computer comes with free word processing software, besides perhaps a Linux Box? You pay for it somewhere... -
A problem with my macbook pro 17"
I have problem with my macbook pro 17". I was streaming on youtube. all of sudden my screen become dark, and it show the words: "You need to restart your computer. Hold the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."

MacBook pro battery not charging anymore, Replace Now, Unibody 2011
Hi everyone
I have a MacBook pro unibody from 2011 (usually used on power but sometimes dischared) and suddenly my battery is indicating "not charging" (is constantly to 0%) and I have the following diagnostic (in the about my mac).
If I remove the plug, the Macbook shutdowns immediately, I cannot connect it to any wifi network, and the date & clock are reset if I unplug it.
I tried the SMC reset and event the reset the NVRAM (PRAM on intels) (I am not sure about the SMC reset as there is no evident signs it has worked...).
My battery only has 120 charge cycles... and my warranty is of course finished. I have read on some forums that I maybe have to "unplug the battery" manually ? And changing the so few used battery seem to be too expensive...
Does anybody has an idea ?
Thanks for your help

Whether you had the Applecare extended warranty or not it would not cover the battery on a 2011 model. Apple considers the battery to be a consumable item that will fail eventually. Because of that after the first year of ownership Apple does not replace the battery for free, in warranty or not.
That is not necessarily the case. I had a battery replaced free of charge well after one year of use. There is latitude exercised by Apple in determining if and when a battery should be replaced for free. I suggest that there is a strong argument in the case of one with 120 cycles. As is the case with any part, some that are produced are defective and fail prematurely, whether it is a battery, HDD, RAM chip etc.

Is there a way to share purchased SW under mote than one profile on the MacBook pro?
ThanksIf the software is in the HD>Applications folder it's available to everyone. If for some reason you put software into User>Applications folder it will be available only to that user.
