Launch QuickTime player from hyperlink in Safari

Here's the software I have:
Mac OS X 10.4.3
Safari 2.0.2
QuickTime Player 7.0.3
When I click a hyperlink in Safari, for example:
<a href="movie.mov">Movie</a>
Safari immediately begins playing the Movie in the browser window as the Movie is being downloaded.
How do I configure either Safari or QuickTime to LAUNCH a new QuickTime player window instead of playing the movie in the Safari window?
Any help will greatly appreciated.

QuickTimeKirk, your advice is correct but I don't want to go threw all that action of control-click, copy URL, open QuickTime, then paste the URL into QuickTime. I know that works, but I want something simpler and faster (to automate that!)
I'm looking for a simple "single-click" solution to launching a QuickTime player from a hyperlink to a QuickTime media file!!!! I've posted this question to MacOSXhints.com and videolan.org with no solutions that I want.
I think I need to look into Safari and see how it handles events when you click on a hyperlink. All I really want is Safari to lauch a QuickTime player instead of playing the movie in the browser!
I appreciate all the comments from everyone! Thanks.

How do I stop Quicktime player from auto-launching after I've exported a movie from iMovie 10?
It's really annoying for Quicktime player to auto-lauch!

It may not be that simple David. They're using a "server" and some of the Apache software may want to launch QuickTime at boot.
This isn't really a QuickTime question. It's a sever question best answered in those Discussion pages.

  • How do I launch quicktime player on Mac Book Air?

How do I launch Quicktime Player on Mac Book Air? I know that my computer came with it, and when I try to launch it, the icon tells me that it is Version 10.1. Nothing else happens. I wanted to watch some online videos which require the plug in, but the plug in says that it needs my permission to run. In Chrome, it is enabled, and yet it doesn't play, In Safari as well.
    Thanks in advance.

Or try the pause key which likely the F7 key.

  • Stopping quicktime player from opening

    hi everyone,
Im pretty thick when it comes to this kind of stuff. Im gonna install quicktime pro but how do i stop the factory installed quicktime player from opening when i want to watch movies?

Right click on a movie file and go to 'Get Info...' Twirl down the 'Open With' section and select 'QuickTime Player 7.app' (This is QuickTime Pro). Then click the 'Change All' button.
You will need to do this for every movie file type, ie. .mov, .mp4, .mpg, etc.
Unfortunately this process may not work for everyone. QuickTime X, (the default Quicktime Player.app in Leopard and Snow Leopard), tends to override your player preferences. If after clicking the 'Change All' button it reverts back to QuickTime Player.app, then you will know. You can fix this by installing the Preference Panel RCDefaultApp. http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/
You can then use RCDefaultApp, (found in your System Preferences after installation), to change your file type associations.
I think it's pretty ridiculous that Apple tries to force QT X over the Pro version, but it is what it is I suppose and this is one way to fix it.

  • Some of the home videos added to iTunes library have no sound although they play on quicktime player from my windows libraries. Any suggestions?

I have added some home videos to my iTunes library and there is no sound on them.  The files are .MOV (film file) from my olympus camera and play perfectly OK with QuickTime player from the Windows library and from the iTunes media library. I am using Windows 8.1 and iTunes 12.1.1.4. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem please?

Dont worry, I found a handy little tool that I think anyone who has any problems with ipod video should try. Its in Japanese, but just set the language to english, its pretty obvious. http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=3GP_Converter

  • Is there any ways to stop Quicktime player from occupying audio hardware?

Hi, my PC system is Window XP Pro SP2, HP xw8400 Workstation w/ 2G Ram. And the PC has a Digidesign Pro Tools HD 1 audio system installed.
My problem is that after Quicktime player lauches, it will occupy the Pro Tools HD's hardware. And if I want to start Pro Tools software, "digidesign hardware is in use by another application." warning will occur and Pro Tools software will then quit. BTW, Digidesign's audio driver is not multi-clients compatible.
I have set Quicktime player's audio playback device to PC motherboard's audio device, and system's audio device is also motherboard's audio device, I even have checked the "use default device only" option. I can't understand why Quicktime player still occupies Digidesign's hardware, even it plays back audio through motherboard's audio device.
Though I can quite Quicktime player before lauching Pro Tools software, I still feel it's annoying and inconvenient, and want to know some ways to solve this problem.
Anyone can help? Thanks in advance. I have asked for help in Digidesign's offcial forum, no response.
BTW, the Quicktime player version on my system is 7.6.5, and each time Quicktime player launches, the sample rate led on the Digidesign's audio interface will flash, indicating that QT player is accessing Digidesign's hardware.

You are missing something simple but lets get it to stop as you want. Go to Settings/General/Bluetooth turn it off.

  • Launch Quicktime Player/ No data duplication

    Hello,
I'm trying to use the blog template in iWeb to create a video organizing/browsing page. The basic idea is to have a picture from the video with a short descriptive text (easy), but then make it so when you click on the picture the video launches in Quicktime Player.
All this content will be stored on a local folder using the "publish to file" option.
Also, I don't want to create multiple copies of the video files-- in other words, I'd like iWeb to point to the files in a common directory w/out making a copy in the site folder.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Andy

Try holding the alt key to download them, and then open them in Quicktime Player, if you want them to open automatically thereafter, you can probably use Automator.

  • Launching real player from an applet.

    hi all.
I was trying to figure out the best way to launch a real audio/video file from a java applet .
i would like to either launch it when someone clicks on something or programmatically.
Does anyone have any idea ?
    Stephen

The first thing you will have to deal with is that the security rules for applets do not allow them to launch programs on the client system where they are running. If you want your applet to be allowed to do this, you must sign it, and then the user will be asked if he/she wants to load your applet or not.
Second thing is to figure out how to launch RealPlayer. This could be difficult, because it might not even be installed on the client system.

  • Quicktime Player won't screen record

I have Quicktime Player 10.0 (but it doesn't show a "Q" icon - see my other post about this), and Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8).
When I launch Quicktime Player, I have a selection under "File" for "New Screen Recording", but when I select it, nothing happens.  From what I've reasearched, I'm supposed to get another screen (black, with a red button to start recording), but nothing happens on my screen.  The "New Screen Recording" is now greyed out, but I don't see that it's recording anywhere.

  • Loss of QuickTime player..?

Since installing the updated OS X 4.11 I have lost the capability of having internet video streamed to open in my QuickTime Player; both using Safari and FireFox.
In one daily-used case when watching 'Nightly News' and clicking on the WMV Podcast the normal 'blue' background(which normally opens the QuickTime player) changes to a page full of indistinguishable characters and QT doesn't open at all...
How and where do I re-configure to have this corrected as I prefer to use that player and it's advantages. I have checked the System Preferences in Flip4Mac WMV and they remain checked to 'Launch QuickTime Player'....
I read when installing the 4.11 that certain software may be affected upon installation, but historically updating the OS X 4 has not caused this problem until now...
    ...?

Yes...here's the link I usually use to watch this site: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8132577/
I then click on the Video Podcasts: Nightly News with Brian Williams(video)....then click on the WMV button and then it usually brings up a blue background screen while QT opens with the video....
    Thanks for the help...

  • QuickTime Player - Partial Screen Recording?

    Hello everyone,
My idea was to use AppleScript to:
    - Launch Quicktime Player
    -- Start Screen Recording
-- Check that 'Show Mouse Click in Recording' is marked
    -- Click 'Record' button
--- Let user drag his desired portion of the screen
    --- Start record
    --- Stop record
    -- Save movie
    - Close QuickTime Player
So far I only got to the point where the user needs to 'drag his desired portion of the screen'.
But I also have a problem detecting that 'Show Mouse Click in Recording' is checked or not.
I can click it, but if it's already checked - it'll just go off. The problem is that it's not really a checkbox element rather a menu item.
Is there a way around it?
Also, and more important, how can I tell when the user finished his recording I.e. clicks the 'Stop' button so the script
can move on to saving that file.
Here is what I got so far (pretty basic):
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "QuickTime Player"
click menu item "New Screen Recording" of menu "File" of menu bar 1
click menu button of window "Screen Recording"
click menu item "Show Mouse Clicks in Recording" of menu 1 of menu button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
click button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
              end tell
    end tell
So, am I crazy or is it possible?
I am pretty new to AppleScript, if there is a different, better way to do it, I would love to know.
    Thanks!
    Mac OSX 10.8.5
    QuickTime Player 10.2

I don't know much about QuickTime Player. Nevertheless, maybe the following script, tested with QuickTime Player 10.3 under OS X 10.9.1, can help you.
    tell application "QuickTime Player"
set theDocument to new screen recording
        activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
        tell process "QuickTime Player"
tell menu button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
                click
tell menu item "Show Mouse Clicks in Recording" of menu 1
if value of attribute "AXMenuItemMarkChar" is missing value then
                        click
                    else
                        keystroke return
                    end if
                end tell
            end tell
click button 1 of window "Screen Recording"
repeat until exists menu bar item 1 of menu bar 2
                delay 1
            end repeat
repeat while exists menu bar item 1 of menu bar 2
                delay 1
            end repeat
            repeat until exists window "Untitled"
                delay 1
            end repeat
click menu item "Save…" of menu 1 of menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1
        end tell
    end tell

  • Quicktime player with audio only?

    I have two problems:
First, I use Coursecompass an educational tool which use Quicktime to access it's multimedia. However, when I try to access it, all I get is audio but not any video.
Second, I also ordered the Pro version figuring it would be the solution, but the instructions to activate it sent me to my control panel to access Quicktime. However, even though I have the player on my computer, there is no box for it in my control panel. Does anyone have an idea of what's wrong?

I also ordered the Pro version figuring it would be the solution
Actually no, that won't help. The Pro key only unlocks the editing and export/conversion capabilities of QuickTime Player. Pro doesn't add anything to the ability of the free version to play a file.
but the instructions to activate it sent me to my control panel to access Quicktime. However, even though I have the player on my computer.
If you have Vista on your computer, launch QuickTime Player and go to the Register menu command under Edit -> Preferences.
But as I said, a Pro registration won't add any playback capabilities. Have you contacted Pearson about the problem? If not, you might start with this support article on their site.
    Regards.

  • Launching windowed program from getRuntime().exec( )

    hello,
I have a tomcat web app that launches media player from getRuntime().exec(mediaplayerExecutable). It works fine when i run tomcat manually (startup.bat) but it only plays audio when I run tomcat as a service. when i look at the error messages for media player process, it complaining about "direct3d video output error: Could not read adapter capabilities"....
I believe it is execution context issue. any idea? Thanks in advanced.

Services in Windows must not have a user interface.
If I remember correctly, there are special loopholes that (native) Windows services go through to get at least some user interaction, but by default you can't interact with the user via the UI at all.
This seems to go for applications started from services as well.
But why would you ever want to start a video client from a service? Or a application server at all?
