Launch Services error (-10810)

Hello everyone. I am a network admin that switched from 12 years of PC's to Macs. So far, so good, except for this problem. In the last few weeks, I have been getting a -10810 error when I try to launch a program. My mac also seems to be dragging a little on speed. I googled this error code and it seems that many other people have been having the same problem. Is Apple aware of the extent of this problem?? I have fixed my disk permissions, ran Maintenance 3.5, all parts of Onyx, etc. If you shut down and turn back on....the problem is gone....sometimes for a day....othertimes for 15 minutes. Any ideas? Hopefully Apple is working on a fix....they always seem to come thru with everything else.
Thanks,
--Nick
P.S. I don't think I noticed the problem until after I started having my Mac preform scheduled shut downs and restarts w/auto login. After the problem began....I removed all of these settings but I still have the problem.

The following have been suggested as possible solutions:
1. If you're using 10.3, you need to get rid of the following:
/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
(where '~' means your Home directory, i.e. '/Users/yourname')
2. If you have Virex or other virus software installed, try uninstalling it. Be sure to use uninstallers that come with the software because simply deleting the application does not fully uninstall most virus software.
After deleting the referenced files above you will want to do a restart. Then use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder to repair permissions.

  • Error -10810 when launching applications

Hi, I have a Core 2 Duo LED screen MacBook Pro that I upgraded to Leopard. I did a clean install, and then imported my settings and documents using the migration assistant.
When I try to launch certain applicatons, I get the following error message: "The application "(Application Name)" cannot be launched. -10810".
The (Application Name) is the name of the application that cannot be launched. So far, it's happened with the following applications: Quicktime, Parallels Desktop, Google Earth, Slingplayer, Photoshop CS3, Safari, Quicksilver, and more. If I restart, then this problem stops with some applications, but keeps on going with others. There seems to be no pattern with this error, it just happens sometimes, and then doesn't. Can anyone help?

In my machine, I have traced the problem to a bug in Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse Driver Software Version 6.0 (v.147).
The problem manifests itself when the wireless mouse battery is running low. When this happens, the Mouse Driver causes a dialog box to appear on the screen letting you know that your mouse is critically low. It has a way of dismissing the alert or postponing it until later.
The problem is that neither of these function properly. If I postpone or dismiss, the Driver software immediately spawns a new dialog, over and over and over.
I like to run my batteries down completely, so I moved the alert into the background. This is when things started to act up and I started to get the 10810 messages.
When I replaced my batteries in the mouse, the dialog boxes stoppped and the error 10810 stopped.

  • What does this mean: "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer.  Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem"?  I tried reinstalling, but I get an error message saying something about permission to launch services.

  • Application cannot be launched error -10810

I recently started getting these error when I try to launch applications. Further investigation lead to the following:
    1) Other threads suggested deleting "/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.xxx.csstore" and "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist" and repairing permissions. I did this to no avail.
    2) In reviewing the console log, I found the following repeated almost without stop (though the actual pp cited changed, this was most common):
3/7/09 10:11:18 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.airportd) fork() failed, will try again in one second: Resource temporarily unavailable
3/7/09 10:12:05 AM com.apple.RemoteDesktop.agent[216] LOG: could not launch checkpoint process (fork failure): Resource temporarily unavailable
3/7/09 10:22:04 AM com.apple.launchd[173] (com.apple.PubSub.Agent) fork() failed, will try again in one second: Resource temporarily unavailable
3/7/09 10:26:31 AM dotmacsyncclient[1562] SyncServer is unavailable: exception when connecting: connection timeout: did not receive reply
    3) On doing more checking, I found my virusbarrier log also repeating perpetual messages:

    Sat Mar 7 10:32:33 2009 [122] - scanFile[1] error starting operation: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/SortPrefixes.plist
    4) I disabled real-time virus scanning on Virusbarrier and the problem went away. Console log has not registered in almost 30 mins now.
Any idea what might be going on. I have reported to Virusbarrier folks as well.

I too am having an issue with launching an app, it's the Dropbox one. I have installed and runn it with no issues on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac running 10.5.6 but it will not launch on an Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro also running 10.5.6.
I have contacted Dropbox and they have no idea how to help. The console gives the following feedback...

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, repaired permissions, fixed launch services, etc. all to no avail. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Updater ipod service error

we needed an update for our ipod video because it has an a folder with an exclamation mark. we followed the steps below that were found on www.apple.com/support
    Install the latest iPod Software.
After your download is finished, install the iPod Updater. Just launch the assistant and follow the on-screen instructions.
    Run the iPod Software
    Run the iPod Updater application
Connect your iPod to your computer and launch the iPod Updater. The iPod Updater will automatically determine if an update is required.
Once we plugged in the ipod and launched the updater it did not give us the option to restore the ipod it just said "ipod service error" and the only option was to click ok and still nothing is fixed, what do we do now?

  • Can't Install Apps....Unknown Service Error

I'm trying to log in to install the new CC apps, but I can't as I just get the "Unknown Service Error - can't sign in at this time" message.
Funny thing is, I can sign in through the website, and when I try to download the apps from there, it then launches the CC app, and gives me that same message.
    Help!

If you are unable to sign in to Creative Cloud Connection but there is no error message please try following these steps:
    1. Quit Creative Cloud Connection and Adobe Application Manager (if it's running).
    2. Delete your opm.db file from this location: Windows - c:\Users\/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/opm.db
    3. Restart Creative Cloud Connection. You will be prompted to sign in again.
Also, please collect below mentioned log files and send them to [email protected]:

Try a google search for *error 10810* which brings up many hits, including http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6074977 wherein MarkDouma® describes the error in detail. • Program not running, error -10810

i was using flash on my ibookk G4, they i closed the progam and later tried to work on it again, however this time there appears a window, which reads: An unexpected error has occured, error -10810.
really need help, dunno whats happening with my computer

    Irene:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I have been unable to determine until now exactly what your error message means. A few questions, if you don't mind.
    1. +i was using flash+
By that do you mean a USB jump drive?
    2. +i closed the progam and later tried to work on it again+
Can you tell us exactly what program you were working on? And by "closed" do you mean quit? Was this program on the internal HDD or on the "flash drive"?
    3. Did you remove the flash drive and replace it?
Before you respond here are a couple of things you can do.
    1. *Repair Disk Permissions*
While booted from your internal HDD
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
    2. Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please do post back with responses to my queries and with an update on the procedures above.
    Cheers

I tried a combination of solutions last night and when I woke up this morning, I launched iChat...it flickered (like it does before it says you have logged in too many times too quickly) and I immediately quit the app.

  • Open command fails with error -10810

Switching from 10.4 to 10.5.3 I can no longer launch applications from the command line using the open command. For example:
    some bloke's macbook$ open TextEdit.app
    LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -10810.
Seems to be some kind of permissions issue since it does work if I sudo open. Anyone know how to fix this?

It's interesting, yogh's post above might be the reason it's failing for you.
Based on that post, I removed execute permissions from the TextEdit binary in /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS, then tried to use open to run the application. Here's what I get:
    % open -a TextEdit
    LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -10810.
Now, it may be that the above error is generic and could be generated by several things, but as yogh suggested it may be something to check...

  • Error -10810: what's that?

I just installed leopard. Erase and install, then I copied my setting back using migration assistant.
I am going through my programs to see if everything works.
One weird thing, it happened twice since yesterday: all of a sudden, many if not all programs refuse to open (terminal, disk utility, activity monitor, etc., but also non apple programs (office, quicken, ecc.).
The message is "The application "<name of the application>" cannot be launched. -10810".
In addition, i have stuff in the trash, and if I try to empty it, I get the message "the operation cannot be completed becaus you do not have sufficient privileges".
    Mine is an administrator account.
When I restart, everything is working back.
Has anybody seen this -10810 error? What happens? What triggers it? How to avoid it?
    Thanks for helping.

    Hi,
I don't use bin-it. I removed most of pre-leopard software from login items, as well as less used preference panels and menu-only applications.
Anyway, this **** -10810 error re-appers. It is quite ramdom (its appearance), but once there, I could not open other applications. The only way to fix it is to reboot.
Furthermore, once -10810 error appears, I can't open any further applications (an unexpected error -10810 occurred) but the ones already opened continue to work, I can't empty the trash (not enough privileges), I can't mount disk images (too many threads).
If I force quit the finder, I can open new applications but after few seconds, the error -10810 is back again.
If I reboot, everything is back working. If I run disk utility, privileges and disk appear to be OK. So there is something that screws things up, but without knowing what that **** error code means, it will be though to try to fix it.
Does anybody know where to get info about that error code, what it is... or, how to contact directly somebody at apple support who can explain what that -10810 error means, what triggers it, how to fix it etc.?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Launch Services can't find app

I have installed the program Macspice which has the ability to set the text editor helper application via the bundle code. However, when the edit command is used in Macspice, the error message "launch services can't find app textedit" appears. Does the code need to be entered manually somewhere? I have already tried resetting launch services per an article by Dr. Smoke to no avail. I am, of course, a new Mac user and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hi, mloggins. Welcome to the Discussions.
I presume you are referring to my "Resetting Launch Services" FAQ.
This sounds like an issue with Macspice, not Launch Services. I suggest you contact the developer.
I presume you're running the Universal Binary of Macspice and that you have TextEdit installed in the Applications folder where it should be. If you moved TextEdit.app, put it back in /Applications.
One thought: If you provided the name of the text editor by typing it, vs. selecting it from an open/save-type dialog, be sure to type TextEdit or TextEdit.app or /Applications/TextEdit.app (full path) and not textedit as UNIX is case-sensitive.
    Good luck!
