  • Launching Win.Migration Assistant on Win.7 laptop to transfer files to new iMac

I downloaded Windows Migration Assistant to my Win.7 O/S laptop so to transfer files to a new imac. The program is downloaded but when i enter "run" it won't launch. Also it is connected directly by ethernet to my new imac and both are on the same modem router system. The imac doesn't recognize the laptop. Anyone out there who may know what the problem is? Maybe there are too many virus or spyware blockers on my Win. 7 laptop(?)

Shut down the machine, connect it via wire to the Internet modem, restart, and use the Setup Assistant to transfer from your other, but unidentified machine. See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details. Trying to do anything wirelessly is an exercise in futility, since it's the slowest of all transmission devices.

  • Starcraft II Beta Launcher (Wine) Issue

Again I seem to be running into problems with this starcraft II beta, although this time it doesn't seem the problem has come up before -- wine doesn't have the answer after a fair amount of searching. I successfully installed it to one of my partitions, and the patches were all applied without a hitch, didn't get the slow firewall problem until the last patch application though, for whatever reason. I have an nVidia GTX 260 with the most current drivers installed. When I put the following command in the terminal it hangs on the bold and then goes through the rest to give me a popup window with a nice errorlog that I will post if someone thinks it is needed. Here is the terminal output.

Thanks, and good call, but there is not any documentation I can find on a launcher failure, the bolded code above just seems to be associated with screen tearing -- which seems like usually is a driver issue (most of the examples are with WoW).

  • Quicktime corrupted / iTunes won't launch / Win 7

I've been avidly reading the posts of "b noir" to try and remedy my situation but so far to no avail.
Briefly: I "broke" both QuickTime and iTunes by trying to make UbiSoft's Myst run on my Win 7: the solution there was to uninstall QuickTime (10) and install QuickTime (6). I did that and Myst kind of ran... So I went to uninstall QT6 and my major problems started. I reinstalled QT10 but neither QT or iTunes would launch. I could see the iTunes process via the Task Manager briefly for a second or two but then it goes away. I tried uninstalling QT10 and it would not uninstall: I finally used "Revo Uninstall" to do so and then uninstalled iTunes. Then I reinstalled both via a fresh iTunes install and I have the same situation. No amount of rebooting or install/uninstall seems to get me out of this situation.
Following the posts of "b noir" I can say:
    1) I have no "codec" installed (not sure what that is, but I haven't installed anything recently.)
2)my Windows\win32 has no QT files in it
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My mistake... I uploaded iTunes 10 (which I understand has QuickTime bundled into the install). I checked the version of QT and it is 7.69.80.9.
Just to be safe, I downloaded QT installer from the link you provided and was going to re-install QT but again it fails to uninstall. The uninstall dialog box has a progress bar that seems to get to about 98% and then just rolls back to 0% and I get a splash screen saying the uninstall completed (although it didn't.)
So, to answer your question: yes, QT 7.69.80.9 installs and launches but only very briefly. I was watching the processes via the Task Manager and QuickTimePlayer.exe*32 seems to run for about 1-2 seconds then disappears from the list. One other item appears under processes at the same time (and also shortly disappears) named WerFault.exe*32.
Currently I have iTunes 10 uninstalled, and QT 7.69 installed but unusable.
    Thanks for looking into this!

When I launched (desktop, Win 8.1) Skype last night (6 Mar 2015) it automatically updated to "improve" my experience. As it was updating, it also rebooted my computer with no warning!
Now Skype for desktop will start to launch but gives the message:
    Skype has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
There were two buttons: "Debug" and "Close program"
I entered debugging, and Visual Studio 2013 gave me the message:

If there is a handler for this exception, the program may be safely continued.

  • Acrobat X (Part of CS6Master Collection) and Reader XI no longer launch (Win 8)

I was in Acrobat X looking at the "About Acrobat X" info page, when I clicked it to close it and the App closed along with it. I tried to reopen it and for a few seconds, the taskbar icon would "glow" red like it was opening, but then the glow went away and it's not in the list of running processes. A tried to launch Reader and it does the same thing.
    Things I've tried:
    Reboot - no success
Double click a PDF - no success
Right click a PDF and choose either app - no success
RIght click and select "Run as Administrator" (Both apps) - no success
Repairing Acrobat (from the control panel - repair completed successfully) - no success
Uninstall and reinstall Reader (using Adobe Cleaner - for Reader only - I don't want to have to reinstall CS6 to replace Acrobat) - no success
Manually downloaded yetserday's update and ran it - no success - the update says it applied but the app won't open, so I can't comfrim it.
Ran the AcroFix from the Acrofix.zip - no success
I'm frankly at a loss, folks. I spend seven days a week in here helping people fix Reader and Acrobat problems and I have no idea what is causing this or how to fix it.
(Edit) ALL of my other CS6 apps run as they always did.

Looks like I do not understand what this message means.  But possibly more like a reaction to the failed Acrobat launch than the cause.
In Adobe Reader, one of the causes that may prevent it from launching is Protected Mode.  You know that I have a script that disables Protected Mode for Reader in the registry.
I will try to make one for Acrobat X; give me a few minutes...

  • Will not launch win 7

I cannot get my Itunes application to launch on Windows 7 64 bit - When I double click on the Itunes icon I get the iTunes Software license agreement  pop up and when I click on Agree the pop up goes away and nothing happens after that. I have uninstalled the application twice and restarted my pc. I have AVG anti virus software

Well, after updating fingerprint manager pro it is now launching and working flawlessly, not sure why, or what simply updating the software changed in terms of permissions/accessability but it works, so im happy.
Feel kinda silly not doing the obvious first but thank you for the help, much appreciated.

  • W550S Finger print manager will not launch. win 7

Only had this laptop for 4 days now, when I first got it I registered my fingerprints in lenovos "fingerprint manager pro" from the control panel, few days later I wanted to change some settings, now when I launch fingerprint manager pro an error pops up that says
"Windows biometric support must be enabled to use this application. Enable biometrics in the Windows control panel"
Been searching and trying different things to let me open this settings manager but havent been able to solve it, if anyone has any suggestions for me that would be great.
The original issue I was trying to solve is that after waking the computer from sleep the first thing thats shows on the login page is "scan an enrolled fingerprint to log on" when this shows it takes like 15 seconds for the fingerprint reader LED to turn on, then even after that It never picks up my first swipe, after the first swipe the LED goes off for another ten seconds before I can swipe a second time this time it registeres and logs in, however, if I click "use other credentials" and select my username THEN swipe my finger it works instantly.
If anyone knows what is causing these delays in response from the FPR that would be amazing.  It seems like after every swipe there is a cooldown on the finger print reader before I can swipe again and it seems WAY longer than it should be. This makes it really annoying to log in with the finger print reader because I cant tell when its actually ready to recieve the swipe.
    Solved!

  • Installing Win 7 via Bootcamp on 27' iMac 2010 gives BLACK screen, BLINKING cursor error (BSBCE)?

    Hi All,
All coments appreciated regarding thiis issue.
    I have a 2010 27' i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 8Gb ram, 2Tb Seagate, and 256 Samsung SSD.
I am running 10.6.8 with all updates on the 2Tb Seagate (has BC 3.04), and 10.7.1 on the Samsung (has BC 4.0).
I have tried over a dozen times to install Win 7 (both a 32 bit Professional edition and a 64 bit Ultimate edition) on BC partitions on both drives. These have been all on separate occasions of course.
All installs result in what appears to be a successful install, but when the machine reboots to launch Win 7 for the first time, I ALWAYS get a black screen with a blinking cursor error (BSBCE).
This is not the 2009 video card driver issue problem reported so widely and referred to in the Apple article TS3173. I had that model previously and the way around that was to connect a second monitor/LCD for the installation.
No this is a new and separate issue.
And I am no nubie. I have used IT for over 25 years and teach networking courses in the Win and Mac environments.
The problem appears to be in a corrupt boot loader install.
I have used both WIn 7 install disks to do a repair each time. The repair says it is successful but after rebooting all I get is the black screen and flashing cursor, with no keyboard response. I have used both Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards. Nothing seems to make a difference re getting WIn 7 to boot after the install on either drive.
I have also used the Bootrec commands in the command window. They all return a successful outcome but when rebooting I see the ever familar BSBCE.
Now,,,,,here is the real puzzle. I copied my previous Win 7 Ultimate install using Winclone before I sold my older 27' iMac.
If I restore that install to the 2010 iMac Win 7 boots fine!
So some error is happening on my current machine when the bootloader/bootmanager is being written to the BC partition.
The problem is there with the BC on both 10.6 and 10.7, and these are different versions of BC!
Now to further complicate the problem, I manage 12X 2011 21.5' iMacs in a lab at work. Win 7 Professional 32bit installed on these machines just as it should (same disks that produces the black screen flashing cursor).
I have read that some people thing it is a Boot Rom version issue, and there may be some substance to this as WIN 7 installs so easily on the 2011 iMacs in my lab.
I called Applecare about this and went through the procedures outlined above. The guy was very helpful and sympathetic but he had no answer to the problem. His suggestion was to pull the SSD out and do it again with only one drive. As the machine can ship from Apple with both of these drives I really do doubt that pulling the SSD would make a difference.
Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7 work fine, no problems on both drives, so I don't think it is a drive issue.
    OK Mac gurus...over to you.

I have a bookmark for iMac w/ SSD and hard drive.
There is also the 'req'd reading' in http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
with one article on Black screen w/ iMac 2010.

Here is some additional information that may or may not be of any relevance. I do not know.
On the old server, I compiled the code with the compilation commands: f95 program.for
I was able to compile and execute code with small, medium size or large arrays (with or without the additional -openmp flag).
If I repeat the same command: f95 program.for
on the new server, I get the following compilation error message for programs with medium size and large arrays:
    In function `newmaxmalecor':
/mnt/ide0/home/gustaf/education/programming/cesprod100//chicago.for:4340: relocation truncated to fit: R_X86_64_32 against symbol
    If I compile with the additional flags: f95 -xmodel=medium -m64 program.for
on the new server, there are no compilation errors and I can run the code in sequence.
    However, when I compile with
    f95 -xmodel=medim -m64 -openmp program.for
on the new server, compilation works, but I cannot execute the code with medium size and large arrays.
The programs for which I have to add the "-xmodel=medium" flag on the new server to be able to compile the code and run it in sequence, are exactly the ones for which I get segmentation faults when I introduce the openmp flag and try to execute the code in parallel fashion.
    Is this just a coincidence?

  • New MBP : when do you install/activate bootcamp for Win 8 install?

I'm receiving my first MBP today, and aimed to install Windows 8 on a portion of about 250 GB (out of 1 TB total).
I see articles but one thing remains unclear : is there a specific ',timing'' ideal to ease the process ? Such as... shoudl it be done as soon as I launch the OS for first time, choose basic configuration ... Or it does not matter ? (Especially if I want to ''reserve'' a partition ...
On another topic: Do you guys chose ExFAT (readable by Mac OS X) or NTFS (where one need a driver such as Tuxedo to read from Mac OS X) ?
I'm going to be 80% +++ of the time under Mac OS X, - Windows is simply for specific applications. (Also considering going through Parrallel, but maybe less of a good idea since I have external gear that may be on Mac OS X drivers - then no idea what it would do when launching Win virtually....)

Yes i am (confused) and since i have downloaded the bootcamp stuff and expandef it on a usb key (thus unchecked the "download drivers from apple" in the bootcamp assistant, i am trapped.
The guide stares that if drivers failed to install, you can do it manually : by clicking the ".exe" file on the usb drive - but there is no such thing as a single ".exe" file. There are folders for "display", "blutooth" and one more.
So i'll guess that since i have downloaded it (though a 5.x version launched in February 2014) this should be latest version even though i downloaded it from a osx mountain lion mac....
Now i am stucked with an incomplete process. Windows 8 is installed. But without proper drivers (mouse works, it reads the usb key, but connect only wired ethernet (no wifi).
WOnder if i should redo everything from scratch - also considering i will probably need sone time over the phone with Microsoft since this key was used on a laptop that failed just a month after installing windows 8. Also before the huge update to 8.1....
    advices ?

  • [SOLVED] Wine & cpu affinity

    Hello there.
    Simply put, my question is:
Is there a way of launching wine apps with restriction to one cpu core?
    Background:
Recently I tried running Unreal Tournament with wine (funny thing is that it seems less painful than running the linux version natively), and there was a problem with game's speed being way too high. I figured out that to make it behave I just need to restrict the game process to one cpu core. Once the game is running, this is done easily by issuing
    taskset -cp 0 [PID]
But when I try to run the game using taskset
    taskset -c 0 wine UnrealTournament.exe
it has no effect at all. When I check the process' affinity, it turns out that it still uses both cores.
Further investigation shown that this problem seems to be related to wine in general, as even launching winecfg with takset doesn't work properly. Is this happening to someone else? Or, is it working correctly for anyone at all?
For now, the only way (known to me) of setting affinity in wine is to do it on already running process. Am I missing something?
    Any help appreciated.
    EDIT:
    Solved, see #7

    @Darksoul71
Heh, don't know if I'm so die hard UT99 player, but I like it very much, and I'm rather not interested in sequels. It just happens that most of the PC games I consider "best of the best" are those made in 90's. Later, most of the gaming industry gone too commercial, if you know what I mean. They just keep selling same old ideas in shiny new boxes.
    Now, back to the topic.
Yeah, I know that I can just run the game, get it's PID and then set the affinity - now I'm doing it this way, by hand. And I'm too much of a perfectionist to let scripts operate on PIDs retrieved by name matching, so I'm searching for alternate solutions
I've tried three test cases, each involving running winecfg, setting it's affinity and checking if it's correct.
    1. Run winecfg through taskset:
    taskset -c 0 winecfg; sleep 1; taskset -cp $!
The last command shows the actual affinity of the process. I've check and confirmed that PID stored in "$!" is the actual PID of "winecfg.exe" process.
    Output is:
    [1] 20444
pid 20444's current affinity list: 0,1
What means - setting affinity had no apparent effect.
    2. Run winecfg and then immediately set it's affinity:
    winecfg& taskset -cp 0 $!; sleep 1; taskset -cp $!
    Output:
    [1] 20482
pid 20482's current affinity list: 0,1
pid 20482's new affinity list: 0
pid 20482's current affinity list: 0,1
So it seems like it's changing the affinity, but again, with no real effect.
    3. Run winecfg, wait a second, and then set affinity:
    winecfg& sleep 1; taskset -cp 0 $!; sleep 1; taskset -cp $!
    Output:
    [1] 20494
pid 20494's current affinity list: 0,1
pid 20494's new affinity list: 0
pid 20494's current affinity list: 0
Now it's working. It seems that somehow, wine is resetting its affinity during startup. Maybe I should ask on wine forums? Because I don't think that it should work like that.
    @Gusar
I tried schedtool, but it gives me the same results as taskset. It seems that it's doing basically the same thing, the only difference being that taskset is meant specifically for this while schedtool does this and few other things.
And as for cpu frequency scaling - yes, I restrict it for almost every game I run on wine. Games on wine tend to always use 100% cpu, so I set the "powersave" governor, as 800MHz seems to be enough for most games I play, and it helps keep my laptop's fans quiet.

  • .wine directory on different partition

    ok here we go 8)
ive formatted a partition for just games and otherr things i want to run with wine/cedega.
i created a directory "Wine" on this partition and did a "ln -s /to/Wine/ .wine"
But when launching wine with a .exe then or also calling winecfg, it gives me the following error
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\windows\system32" is not accessible.
Warning: could not find DOS drive for current working directory '/home/detto', starting in the Windows directory.
so whats the best way i can achieve that all i do with wine (games, apps) and so on just stay on a diffren partition?
    cheers,

    mount -o bind <other>/.wine ~/.wine ?
    rm -rf ~/.wine && ln -s <other>/.wine ~/.wine ?
mhh, this didnt work. wanted to install wine with some apps/games on brothers pc too but gave me same error.
the only way it did function was to remove ~/.wine and install an app, so that some important files and dirs were created in newly created ~/.wine.
then cp whole wine dir on seperate partition and link to .wine again
    cheers,
