Launching iDVD from iMovie

After completing my movie in iMovie I click on iDVD and then create iDVD project. iDVD launches but my movie does not come up. Nothing comes up. I've updated all software already. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
christine

Im so sorry could you spoonfeed me a little How do I
simply export your project to your hard drive using the same pre-set used for the "Media Browser."
Was merely trying to point out that your can use the "Export Movie..." Share menu option to create a "visible" file anywhere on any of your available, properly formated hard drives. This option uses the same "pre-sets" as the "Media Browser" or "iTunes" preset options but places the file at a "visible" location you select and not hidden in your "project package file" or generate an intermediate file that you may or may not come across on your own.
How do I drop the reference file into IDVD
I was referring to "reference pointers" above. iTunes can be programmed to leave files in their original location and only copy a reference pointer to iTunes which tells iTunes where the physical file is located when iTunes needs it.
However, now that you've asked, It is possible to create both "reference" and "standalone" types of files. A "reference" file is merely a very small file that "looks" and "handles" the same as a "standalone" file but is usually only about 4 KBs in size unless you are adding/mixing content from multiple files together. (I.e., a real "reference" file can be "drag and dropped" to iDVD as long as the "standalone" resource file(s) remain available.) A reference file is also handy since you can send it in an e-mail without having to worry about attachment file size limitations. On the other hand, for this to work, you have to upload your main file to a server and the recipient of your "reference" file must be "on-line" in order to view the uploaded content. The timeline in iMovie HD and previous versions of iMovie was actually a reference file whose resources pointed at all physical standalone source and rendered files that make up the timeline. The only problem with "reference" files is that you cannot delete the original "standalone" file (as many new users attempt to do) without making the "reference" file useless.

what is whrong had been done whithin imovie project then?

My personal worst was a 1 hr 50 min video with 14 imported music clips. Took 42 hours to render, but it got there in the end!
Oh, then 24 hours isn't so bad :-|
What kind of audio files did you use then? I guess it shouldn't make a difference because iMovie converts them to AIF. What sample rate did they use -- 44.1 or 48 kHz? iMovie should convert them to 48 kHz but I haven't checked how well iMovie behaves with imported audio.
Maybe iDVD chokes with overlapping audio clips or when resampling them??
I hope the quality testing of iLife 07 is any better. iMovie 2.1.2 is the last well behaving version!

  • Import files into iDVD from iMovie OR export files from iMovie to iDVD?

I've been told it is better to import iMovie projects into iDVD (within iDVD) rather than exporting from iMovie to iDVD within iMovie. I was told that iDVD does a better job of rendering things than iMovie. Is this true because this is not the instructions given in the iMovie tutorial.

Not sure what advice you have been given and how you have interpreted it.
You are of course referring to im6 here since you can't drag projects from im08 to iDVD.
I don't make many DVD's anymore and may well be wrong here but I'm not aware that dragging an im6 project to iDVD is any different than using share/iDVD and I'm wondering if the advice relates to exporting from im6 and then importing the exported movie into iDVD which is indeed a different workflow.

  • IDVD from iMovie

I am trying to create a DVD using iDVD from an iMovie I have created.
I have added clips and photos into iMovie, inserted audio, titles and transitions.
I have Shared this as a file (twice).
When I open iDVD I am unable to see the movies in iMovie to import.  I can however see movies in iPhoto.
    What do I do?

That's how iDVD worked - you have allways to use a 'Theme'.
If you want  a theme-less disc, you should use the auto-play feature in iDVD. Which asks for a theme either …
When you (re)install the old themes, there're very simple ones, which you additionally can 'mod' ad infinitum to your needs.
Had a website about that (omg, 2009!!), don't maintain it any more, but maybe of help:
    https://sites.google.com/site/idvdmodding/backdrops-and-background
This 'modding-by-drag' n drop'-ability was the outstanding feature of iDVD, which made it exceptional to any other authoring tool. Apple stopped development 8-9y ago, and any hope for a iBluRay-version was burried, since  SJ mentioned BluRay "a bag of hurt" - allthough Appe was member in a BluRay-consortium...
Will be interesting when iDVD will finally stop working - Apple makes for years a transition to new code (Quicktime >> AVFoundation), I'm surprised, that iDVD works with Yosemite, anyhow.- If your with DVDs, keep an old Mac alive just fo this purposes.-

  • Red faces on idvd from imovie

Help with red faces. I made a 5 minute imovie using a fliphd ultra camera and still pictures. All is well in imovie, crystal clear, but when I burn it in idvd, the faces from the video portions are extremely red. The stills are ok. Is this a resolution problem I'm missing or is it poor quality I'm getting with burning a dvd.

    Welcome to the forums.
When you're in iDVD, make sure the Preferences are set to Best Performance or Pro. These will give you the best resolution since your video is so short.
You can add one more step in the process to help isolate the problem, by using the Save As Disc Image option in iDVD. This creates a virtual DVD on your desktop that you can mount and play with your computer's DVD Player software. See if the faces are red -- if not, then the problem is in the burning process -- get high quality disks and try the burn again (Verbatim is often recommended around here; I also use Sony DVD-R with good results).

  • Poor Image quality in iDVD from iMovie

After creating a video in iMovie using photos, video clips, transitions, music, and Ken Burns, things look great. Everything looks fine in iMovie ('09). I then export it to iDVD to create the menus, etc. So far so good. After burning the disc, the picture quality is really horrible, especially the photos using Ken Burns. I do not know how to describe it....wavy, pixilated, something. The video used, taken using a digital camcorder is tolerable if I remember to deinterlace. What do I have to do to get these pics to look right? IF I export in iMovie using Quicktime, the resulting .MOV is fine....looks great. After exporting to iDVD, it looks awful.....Any help would be appreciated....thank you.
    jrsorte

    Chris,
    not using any de-interlacing
Both iMovie 08 and iMovie 09 only use one field of a DV video frame. iMovie 5 and earlier used both frames. I'm not sure that using just one field makes a lot of difference when the content goes through mpg-2's heavy compression to make a DVD in iDVD.
As far a still images are concerned, the best sizes for NTSC DVDs are 720x540 pixels for standard video and 854x480 pixels for widescreen. Going to larger image sizes can actually reduce the image quality on a DVD.

  • Burning a 4x3 version of a 16x9 movie to iDVD from iMovie

I have created a movie/slideshow in iMovie as a 16x9 HD project and successfully burnt a 16x9 version in iDVD. However I need to create a 4x3 version in iDVD to send to a friend who does not have a widescreen TV. Would appreciate any advice. I am working with iLife 09 and Mac OSX 10.6.2. Cheers.

I would do it this way.
Find your project name in the project library list of iMovie. Right-click on the Project Name and select "Duplicate".
Open your duplicate copy for editing.
Click File/Project Properties and change the aspect ratio to 4:3.
Also, change the default behavior to "FIT". This will make your 16:9 video fit in a 4:3 space by letterboxing rather then "Crop" which cuts off the top and bottom.
You may have to adjust the current video clips as well. Pick one. Open the inspector by clicking on the small gear icon. Go to the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns tab of the inspector and select FIT.
Now click on this same clip and EDIT/SELECT ALL.
Then EDIT/PASTE ADJUSTMENTS.../ROTATE, CROP, KEN BURNS
Now you can share your movie to iDVD. Pick a 4:3 template and create your DVD.

  • When i launch idvd from my dock it brings up the last dvd i created

is this normal. is there a default to new. hope this makes sense

See if this works for you. When your last project is open, first close out the window; then quit iDVD. I think that when you reopen iDVD, you will see a window that gives you options to create a new project, open an existing one, etc.
If you are still having problems, give this basic remedy a try. Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
Do a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
    I hope this helps.

  • How do i add a second movie to an idvd project when 'sharing' from imovie always opens a new idid window?

I am creating an idvd project with multiple imovie projects.  I know I need to share my imovie project with Idvd.  WEhen I do that, idvd automatically opens.  Now I want to add a second project.  The problem is that when I share imovie projects a second time, it automatically opens a second idvd project.  I want to add multiple imovie projects on one idvd project.

One should not share directly to iDVD from iMovie.  The Share ➙ Media Browser option should be used as that results in a better quality movie in iDVD.  Do the same for both movies and you can drag the movies from the Media ➙ Movies pane in iDVD into the DVD menu window at the left.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Slow motion problem publishing from imovie to idvd

The problem is with publishing a film to idvd from imovie. The slow motion clips "glitch up" when viewed on idvd but run smoothly when viewed on imovie. The visual of the slow motion clip pauses as the audio continues. The movie picks up as normal after the slow motion scene ends. There is another point in the movie where a non-slow motion scene does the same thing (visual pauses and audio continues) until the end of the entire movie. The glitch stops before the credits (which is not filmed fottage). How do I fix this?

hmmmm..I would double check the other clips. Other than that I am stumped. Maybe someone else will have some ideas.
Also, once you changed to 25%, you need to re-SHARE the video. (If you haven't already)

  • Is it worth moving from iMovie 4 to iMovie 6?

I'm using iMovie 4, but I have heard that iMovie 6 is now a free download from the Apple website.
What features would I gain if I moved up from iMovie 4 to 6? Would it really be worth it? iMovie 4 seems to be working all right for me at the moment.
Would iMovie 6 have any problems opening my previous iMovie 4 projects?
    Tom

OK, I downloaded iMovie 6 from the Apple website and installed it, after first giving iMovie 4 a different name (I renamed it, oddly enough "iMovie 4" instead of simply "iMovie." Now I have on my Dock both "iMovie HD" and "iMovie 4," although since their icons are exactly alike, I will have to choose the one I want carefully).
I confirmed the correctness of your information (thanks) that iMovie 6 can open iMovie 4 projects, but not vice-versa (I don't know why you'd ever want to do vice-versa anyway), and I see that when iMovie 6 opens up an iMovie 4 project, it updates it so that iMovie 4 cannot ever open it again (and once again, I don't see any reason why you'd ever want to do that anyway). To check this out, I opened up an old iMovie 4 project that I didn't care about anymore with iMovie 6, and it is now an iMovie 6 project, and it seems to work fine. All new projects from now on will be in iMovie 6.
I also like the idea that iMovie 6 doesn't have that project-corrupting trash-emptying bug that so many people have reported, and although that bug never bit me before, there is always a first time, and I am sure that it was only biding its time, waiting for an important project to corrupt.
Now I just have to play around with iMovie 6 to figure out the differences and new features, or go buy a book on it somewhere. Right off I notice that you can no longer launch iDVD from within the iMovie project window--apparently that's now up under the Share menu, yes? Once I get things like that figured out, I'll be good to go in 6.
I have Final Cut Express for really important video projects, but iMovie has always been great for creating quick little family videos like birthdays and things where I don't want to get involved with all the complex FCE windows and controls. Also, FCE puts render files and things in folders all over the hard drives, which is rather a messy nuisance, whereas all of iMovie's files are kept inside its single project folder--very tidy and accessible. Also, for convenience I can import entire Mini-DV videotape sequences into iMovie and afterward cull out the unwanted video (throw it into iMovie's trash can) and then flush all those unwanted video edits right off the hard drive to regain space (FCE can't do that; it never gets rid of anything, so if you want to save space while importing into FCE you have to carefully evaluate each scene on the tape and only import exactly what you want, which is time-consuming). After doing basic editing in iMovie, I can export the video as a QuickTime movie to drop into FCE, if I want to create a more sophisticated video project than iMovie is capable of.
So, iMovie and Final Cut Express are complementary programs for me, each having its own strengths and uses, and I am happy that I now have the advantages of iMovie 6, with its improved features and reliability, and especially its ability to open multiple projects and cut and paste between them.
So, the switch from iMovie 4 to 6 was successful and worth it to me, and thanks again for the advice and information, everyone!

  • IDVD Stops Responding when Exporting from iMovie

I'm using iDVD and iMovie (from iLife 06 and fully up to date) on a MacPro (also up to date on all software, MacOSX, Quicktime etc).
This proceedure has worked before several times but now results in a non-responding iDVD every time I try it, including an archive and re-install and a complete new install of OSX and all software on a new partition.
    What I'm doing.....
[1] Recording a TV programme on EyeTV (410) and exporting it to iMovie - sucessful every time
[2] Edit the iMove project and add chapter markers and save project - no problem.
[3] Export to iDVD - iDVD shows exporting in progress and whilst this is still showing iDVD launches
[4] iDVD starts playing the music from a std theme for a few seconds and then stops. Then resumes the music after resizing the window and then after a couple of more seconds freezes. From the Dock I can see that iMove and iDVD are "not responding"
[5] Eventually iMovie completes it's "export" and then starts responding normally. iDVD continues to show as non responding although I can move the window around the screen. I have to force quit iDVD to get it to close down.
    I have tried:
    Re-exporting the project from EyeTV
Deleting the preferences files for iMove and iDVD
Deleting the iLife suite and re-installing
Doing an OSX archive and re-install
Installing a fresh OSX (10.4.8) on a different drive and installing fresh software
Running Disk Utility - clean bill of health on both drives
    Repaired permissions
The Console reports the following errors when exporting from iMove to iDVD:

Yes, tried that when I deleted the preferences. Disk Utility did not report any permissions needed repairing.
What really mystifies me is that this export to iDVD did work once and I expected it to resume once I'd created a fresh OSX install along with all the iLife apps on a new partition, but it remained the same!
Perhaps there is some sort of other software conflict going on? I have Adobe CS2, MS Office, Toast and FMP installed all are latest editions. On the utilities front I have installed Stuffit Deluxe, Internet Cleanup, Contour USB controller for video editing and a LogicTech wireless trackball. Again all the drivers are the latest releases.
Does anyone know if there are any preferences associated with the other not responding applications listed in my other post that I could try the delete-reboot trick on?
