  • Killing processes from java

    I've got a set of programs written by various people in various languages - all of which I cant change.
    They typically do build / continuous integration stuff for several projects, and have a habit of hanging and crashing a lot.
    These are long running programs which run on several OS's (to be specific: windows, HP-UX, RedHat Linux AS, Solaris).
    What I want to be able to do is set up a "service" (daemon program, whatever) on each box to monitor the running of these programs and kill any program when it "hangs".
    For each program type, there is a strategy to determine whether it is still active or not (e.g, recently appended something to a file etc).
    I want to provide the guts of the program in java because a) The people who will maintain it know java well and b) Because it has to run on several OS's.
    The only thing I cant do directly in java is kill the processes (they are run independantly - and are not started by the "monitor" program).
    One idea is to have a per OS script / program invoked by the monitor program to do the killing (e.g, a simple sh script on unix variants).
    But Im wondering if anyone either knows of existing java OSS libraries which would let me do a "kill" in an OS agnostic way? (i.e, which already do the OS specific stuff somehow themselves).
    ~D

    Killing unrelated processes goes against the spirit of java, I thinkI wasn't asking if it was somehow included in standard libraries or whatever (of which, of course, Im sure it's not).
    However, the need for an application to have the ability to do a single OS specific task as part of its operation is not a good argument for saying the whole application shouldn't be written in java.
    There are many good reasons why my application should be written in java (I gave two of them).
    Of course, there are multiple ways to solve this:
    - native calls and a per OS lib to do the killing
    - Execution of an external program to do the killing (as suggested in my post)
    Im happy to do the grunt work using one of the above methods if I have to, I was just wondering if there were existing OSS libraries which already did it (just like there are OSS libraries which allow java applications to put icons in a windows task bar, for instance).

  • How to kill a system process from java code.

    Hi,
    i need to kill or remove windows system process like cmd.exe from java code.
    like removing it from end process in task mgr.
    i tried below code but its not removed.
    is there a better way we can do this.
    killing a system process from java code will create any issues?
       public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
       String[] cmd = { "cmd.exe" };
       Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
       p.destroy();
    any suggestions or ideas are really appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi  jtahlborn, mohan
    yes the process is created from my java code.
    in my code iam creating a process like below and if it is running for a long i need to kill it from java.
    For that " Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  7408); " is working fine.
    7408 is my process id in taskmgr created from java and iam manually passing the PID it to kill it.
    But i need to get the PID from java code.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    Sample Code:
    public static void main(String args[])
            try {
              Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"});
              Field f = process.getClass().getDeclaredField( "handle");
              f.setAccessible( true);
              long procHandle = f.getLong( process);
              System.out.println( "prochandle: " + procHandle );
              //Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  procHandle);
            } catch( Exception e) {
              e.printStackTrace();

    Lightroom 4.2 Win 7 64-bit  -have to kill process in Task Manager every time or can't launch Lightroom.   This seems like a bug?  Any suggestions?

    Does sound like a bug. Consider reporting to Adobe:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/new
    In the mean time, I only have workarounds like start using a batch file.
    Something is hanging it up upon exit, but I dont know what. Maybe a device or process/service? - did you try removing non-essentials? Check windows logs?

    Hi
    Can you try with below code

    I'm trying to compile the firefox version 15 as both 16.0.1 and I always get the same error, which I think leaves me with no ram even though I have 8 gigs, i try it with 8 gigs of swap but does exactly the same, here are all the facts about this problem, the only thing I have not tried is to change the compiler version, what do you think? this is a clear linkage error where the system breaks down after running out of physical memory...

  • Unable to kill processes

    Occasionally, a process will hang in such a way that I cannot terminate it at all.  This seems to have started in Vista and carried over into 7 (Win 7 was a clean install on a blank disk).  In XP Pro, process explorer would *always* kill any process
    I asked it to.  It was great, as it enabled me to run without the need to reboot for months at a time.
    In my currently existing problem, there are two processes which will not go away.  Normally, when these processes are
    not hung, I can easily terminate them with process explorer.  These processes are legitimate and part of my normal system use.
    I do not have any malware problems.  When these processes are hung, I cannot re-launch their parent applications.  It is incredibly frustrating to be unable to re-launch the apps without a reboot.
    I cannot end them with the task manager, process explorer, taskkill, or pskill.
    Process explorer will return an Access Denied error, and I always run process explorer as administrator.  I created a batch file for pskill and ran it as administrator, it also reports Access Denied.
    Here is the output from taskkill, when run from a command prompt (which was started as administrator):
    C:\Users\Kevin>taskkill /f /pid 996
    ERROR: The process with PID 996 could not be terminated.
    Reason: There is no running instance of the task.
    I have granted my user account (already an administrator) and the administrator account the "act as operating system" security policy assignment.  This has not helped.
    This problem has occasionally manifested in the past, where the only solution was to reboot the computer when the particular process would hang.
    How can I properly kill a process without restriction?  The frustration level here is off the chart.
    Unfortunately and fortunately, I cannot intentionally duplicate the hung process scenario.  Fortunately - because it's somewhat infrequent.  Unfortunately - because it's much harder to troubleshoot.  However, I suspect this is a core
    problem in windows 6 and 6.1.
    Other responses to this issue I find in these forums range from "It's not like there are a lot of people reporting taskkill failure"(blaming the topic starter's hardware), to completely unrelated walkthroughs for reinstalling various items,
    to unanswered.  This inability to kill processes in 7 and Vista is reported all over the internet.  Please, please, somebody provide a real fix or workaround. :(

    "This is always a danger with an open system, there might be 200 million combinations of hardware and software (or more), and if it causes
    issues for some, there may be hundreds of millions that wonder whats wrong with your specific combination."
    It's a problem with windows that there are so many vendors. Personally, I'd start looking at the process and especially any third party
    drivers.

    Just hangs until i kill process with task manager. Have uninstalled and reinstalled. Any suggestions? I don't want to upgrade to CC as I hate subscription services and often have internet connection services interuppted.

    Which operating system are you using?
    Resetting the photoshop preferences might cure the problem.
    Press and hold down the Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys down just after starting the launch of photoshop 7
    (Shift-Command-Option on a mac)
    Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop settings file

  • Re: Killing Processes

    I've created a Process using java.lang.Runtime.getRuntime().exec() which runs a batchfile to set various FORTRAN programs in motion and output to a custom window. This all works fine.
    I now however wish to be able to terminate the process prematurely if the user clicks a cancel button. Using the Process.destroy() method only appears to pause the process. As soon as the JVM is exited the process continues.
    I'm running WinXP Professional but it also need to run on Windows 98SE, Windows ME and WinXP Home.
    Assistance greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Si

    Thanks for the link to the bug, I think that's one reason why it's happening. It's the child proceses that aren't being killed.
    I'm not sure I totally understand why though, surely when the command window is killed it should take it's child process with it. When one types 'CTRL+C' in a command window when running a batchfile it asks whether one wishes to terminate the Batch File execution or not, and I think the default is 'yes'.
    It is also odd because the chaining of the FORTRAN programs calls DOS commands and parameters so if the cmd.exe has been killed surely the FORTRAN shouldn't be able to continue, but it does.
    No command shell opens on WinXP, but it does on Win98 and WinME because the way in which the process is called is slightly different.
    According to Task Manager on XP the FORTRAN program is still there using memory, but using no Processor power. It then continues when the JVM has been exited.
    Thanks
    Si

  • Launching command containing pipe from Java

    Hi,
    i have some troubles to launch a command containing pipe from java.
    I've tried to backslash the pipe but it still not work.
    Maybe someone has an idea about that :
    head -102050 /data/a_very_big_file | tail -5
    the idea is to get 5 lines in the middle of a very big file.
    To launch commands from java i use i think the classical way,
    something like :
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(commande[0], this.envp, new File(this.pathExecution));
    I obtain this error :
    ERROR : head: invalid option -- 5
    ERROR : Try `head --help' for more information.
    Thanks for your help,
    kevin.

    kevleb wrote:
    yes same result...
    but i think the problem come from the fact
    that when you pipe your result of a command,
    you launch an other process (is that true).i don't know if another process is launched (the probability is rather high, though)
    but even if that's the case, from the time you rely on a shell and not directly on exec(), i think it shouldn't be a problem to include a | inside the command ; i don't have an idea why it gives you that message error :\

  • Ttrigger Event Sub-Process from Java code.

    Hi All,
    Is there any way to trigger Event Sub-Process from Java code.
    My requirement is to trigger an Event SubProcess when a Approver clicks on REJECT button in HUMAN TASK.
    One way of achieving this is by placing a gateway after the human task and by validating the human task outcome and there by triggering a call to Event SubProcess.
    But we dont want to put a gateway after the human task. But instead we would like to trigger the Event SubProcess from the ADF task forms itself. ie, by calling a JavaCode.
    Please give me some pointers on achieving this task.
    Thanks
    Parker.

    Hi  jtahlborn, mohan
    yes the process is created from my java code.
    in my code iam creating a process like below and if it is running for a long i need to kill it from java.
    For that " Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  7408); " is working fine.
    7408 is my process id in taskmgr created from java and iam manually passing the PID it to kill it.
    But i need to get the PID from java code.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    Sample Code:
    public static void main(String args[])
            try {
              Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(new String[]{"cmd.exe","/c","start"});
              Field f = process.getClass().getDeclaredField( "handle");
              f.setAccessible( true);
              long procHandle = f.getLong( process);
              System.out.println( "prochandle: " + procHandle );
              //Runtime.getRuntime().exec("taskkill /F /PID " +  procHandle);
            } catch( Exception e) {
              e.printStackTrace();

    Have got the same problem. Scenario at my end is little different though.
    I am trying to invoke a BPEL process from an ESB Service.
    I am trying to look into it..
    However, would be grateful, if someone can give some insight into this since many are running into this issue without being able to fix.

    Hi,
    I am trying to invoke a short lived process using java code. But when i try doing that i get the following error
    cannot access class com.adobe.idp.dsc.clientsdk.ServiceClient; class file has wrong version 49.0, should be 45.3 or 46.0 or 47.0 or 48.0.
    I am using the following versions:
    Adobe Livecycle: 9.0
    java version "1.5.0_03"

    Can some one please suggest the appropriate action i need to take so that i can compile the code.
    Thanks in advance

    If you are invoking LiveCycle ES2 on JBoss compile with JDK 1.6 and run against JRE 6.

    When I download jar file to disk I can run it with command java -jar and it works fine.
    After downloading jar I made some tests changing line <jar href="http://192.168.79.33:7070/resources/applet/formeditor.jar" /> in Jnlp file.
    When I changed it to <jar href="formeditor.jar" />, and have jar in folder it works.
    When I changed it to <jar href="file:///C:/formeditor.jar"> it is not working (same exception).
    In every case jar is download correctly and it pass verifying.
    can anyone help?
    Regards

    can anyone help?Search the bugs database to see if someone else already reported this; if not create a new bug entry. Whatever mistake you could make, you should not be getting a NullPointerException as a result so this is at the very least a bug in the error handling of webstart.
    But just some observations to try and see if you can make a difference (which is added input for your bug report). If I check JNLP examples, I see that the url specified is usually without a protocol, so it could be like this:
    <jar href="/resources/applet/formeditor.jar" />The JNLP should be on the host that you service the jar from, so Webstart can fill in the host information for itself.
    Also you provide a main-class; if the jar manifest specifies a main-class (and it should) you don't need to specify it in your JNLP file.
