Launchpad arrangement is saved in PRAM?

I swapped my HDD from a mid-2011 MBP to a mid-2012 today. I wasn't surprised to find I needed to change some trackpad settings to my liking because I knew those are saved in the PRAM.
To my dismay, though, I found that my Launchpad arrangement is in disarray. I'd organized my apps carefully onto several pages, with many in well-named folders as well, and now the folders are mostly gone and I've got 100 or so apps scattered randomly across the pages. It seems I must now go through the tedious process of restoring my arrangement.
The only explanation I can think of is that OSX stores the arrangement in PRAM, but this seems a brain-dead design decision, so I'm wondering if I'm overlooking something and there's an easy way to recover the arrangement.

I've not used SubEthaEdit⇪ (although I've only read good things about it), but one of their features reads:
Also new: document state persistence, i.e. SubEthaEdit now remembers window positions, sizes, cursor positions, etc
Document state persistence using Xtended Attributes - SubEthaEdit now saves document state (mode, folding state, window position, selection and more) for plain text files using an extended filesystem attribute.
Presumably, that means you can select a number of text files, hit ⌘+⇣ to open them all at once, and if SubEthaEdit is your default text editor, it will reposition each of those separate document windows back to their last state. You could try their 30day trial to see if it does what you want. Like I said, I've not used it, so I don't know if that's what "document state persistence" means.

  • MIDI Studio Setup window device arrangements not saved

I just started checking out Snow, late to the party... been TDM for years.
I am finding that the AMS MIDI Studio window no longer remember device layout or arrangement like it has for years. Makes a big difference for users with many external instruments. Seems under Snow everything is displayed in a single line from left to right.
Used to be able to move devices around and make the page look more sensible.
Am I missing something in snow leopard MIDI Studio?

I went back into the midi studio window and now magically I can select devices on
a single click and double click to edit the device info.  Don't understand why this
    is now working???

  • Volume setting not saved

    Hello,
My volume settings are not saved when I power-cycle or reset my iMac. I have tried resetting the PRAM, with no effect. In another thread, someone asked me whether my PRAM battery might be getting old; the answer is, probably not, this computer was new as of this January.
One thing that's a little different from my other/previous Macs is that I have a Solid-State Disk (SSD) as startup disk and a standard Hard Drive (HD) for data storage. As recommended by various threads on the subject, to optimize performance while minimizing wear on the SSD, the /Users/xxx directory is on the SSD, but various sub-directories (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, ...) are on the HD. I've noticed that this leads to various odd perturbations (e.g. icons in the Finder sidebar only update when I click on them, can't launch a Parallels virtual machine by double-clicking its icon, ...), but I really don't see how it would be related to my volume settings.
    Here's the machine configuration:
    iMac (iMac11,3) 27" / 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 / 16 GB RAM / 251 GB SSD / 2 TB HD
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K540)
    Boot ROM version: IM112.0057.B00
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. The Library folder is on the SSD, and I don't think the Public folder really has anything to do with this. But I did try moving the Desktop folder back to the SSD; the only thing that changed is that the Desktop icon in the Finder window sidebar is drawn correctly. The volume setting behavior is not changed.
I noticed something else, though: when I increase the volume and restart, the reboot chime is louder. This implies that my volume setting is correctly saved to PRAM, but then something else - during the start-up - cranks it back down. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to track this sort of thing?

  • Drag and Drop, Field Arrangement.

Recently downloaded Francois' new bean for drag and drop but I think I got the wrong idea of how it works. I was hoping for a bean that can give me the ability to move physical fields on the canvas and re-arrange them as I please. Francois' applet seems like a fancy version of cut and paste...
anyone know of such functionality? I want to be able to manually arrange the field positions on the canvas and have it auto correct itself against its neighboring fields. The idea is similar to Francois' drag and drop but physically changing the fields.... chime me in on your thoughts! :) Thanks
    Mo

The idea is to give clients the ability to move the fields on the form during runtime to give them a custom look and feel. The form is on a stacked canvas, so I want them to have the ability to decide which fields are most important to them when looking at the form at a glance.
What would be nicer is if I could find a way to save the settings, so when they log in the field arrangements are saved.

  • Spotlight and Mail

Spotlight refuses to index my inbox or any archives after installing Leopard. This was not a problem before with Tiger. I noticed several posts on this but all unanswered. Does anyone have the same problem? Any solution? My mail search is pretty much useless. Thanks!

If your mail is encrypted, you will need to check the Include Encrypted box in the Search section of Mail /Preferences/General.
You may have a file permissions problem which is causing grief, or one of the system parameters saved in PRAM may be out of whack and causing Spotlight indexing to get confused.
So Shut Down the computer and then reset PRAM. To reset PRAM, reboot while holding the 4 keys Apple-Option-P-R until you hear the SECOND startup chime, then release them. Your computer will continue to boot up normally.
Then log in and run Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. Select the line with the name of your main hard drive in the column on the left and click Repair Disk Permissions in the panel on the right. Be patient. This will take a while and the progress bar may not advance until the very end. Even if that generates notification messages, if it completes with "Permissions Repair Complete" you are good to go.
Now Restart and log in again to get things in a fresh state. Then go to System Preferences / Spotlight / Privacy. Drag the icon for your main hard drive from the Desktop into the privacy list (I'm assuming your mailboxes are on your main hard drive). Click Show All to exit the Spotlight pane. Go back into Spotlight / Privacy, select the line you just added for your main hard drive, and click the "-" at the bottom of the list to remove it from the list. Exit System Preferences.
Spotlight should now re-index your main hard drive from scratch. You can watch this by clicking on the Spotlight icon in the menu bar. Wait for indexing to finish.
Now see if your Mail searches work better.
EDITED TO ADD: Select About Mail from the Mail menu to confirm you are running version 3.1 and haven't, somehow, retained an older version of Mail not compatible with Leopard's Spotlight.

On the help pages for the new log in arrangements, under 'Saving Time', it says "If you want to save time, use the Email login page and tick the 'keep me logged in box' "

  • Mac OS 9 won't start - Epson Launcher ?

Hi, I just found an old but in good shape iMac G3 (350 Mhz) and I want to use it for many small projects. But, on the first boot, I found that it won't be possible to use it right now.
The boot seems to be ok, but went arriving in Finder, the cursor stays on hold and nothing happends. When I try to Force Quit something I don't really know, the dialog stated EPSON Launcher as the actual application. But Quit just freeze everything.
Also, on another boot (without touching any button), after a long period of time (maybe 10 minutes), I am getting an error about a network manager ("recherche du serveur gestionnaire macintosh" in french, which is "looking for macintosh manager server" in english).
    Anyone had an idea ?

    Hi, CCBC -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Re, Epson Launcher, that may be scanner software. Software of that kind often can cause problems; sometimes it is a matter of the software not being able to find the hardware it supports, and locking up the machine in the process.
To address that, try booting with Extensions Off - restart or boot, immediately press the Shift key, keep that key held down until the desktop has fully loaded. Doing this will eliminate any conflict from extensions and startup items. Then do three things -
    1) Take a look in the Startup Items folder (in System Folder). Remove anything that you don't want to be initiated during startup, particularly anything (like an alias)to Epson software or for a scanner or printer.
    2) Take a look in the Extensions folder (in Syatem Folder). Remove any extensions having to do with an Epson scanner, and, if you do not have it connected to an Epson pronter, anything to do with one of those.
    3) Take a look in the Control Strip Modules folder (in Syatem Folder). Remove anything to do with an Epson scanner or printer.
    <hr>
Re the network manager error, while booted with Extensions Off take a look in the Servers folder (in System Folder). Remove the aliases to any servers not available. If you do not have the machine networked to other computers, you probably do not need to have anything in that folder. Doing so should clear that issue.
Another possibiity, especially if an icon for a large globe of the world appears during the booting process - the machine is looking for a network server from which to boot (instead of using the internal hard drive as the boot volume). To clear that, reset PRAM -
Article #HT1379 - How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
Then, on that startup open the Startup Disk control panel and set the internal hard drive as the boot volume. Then shut down (don't use restart - some items are saved to PRAM only on shut down) and re-boot to verify.

  • Startup showing globe and folder with finder image????

Help! I don't have any idea why but whenever I turn my powerbook g4 tiger on, instead of seeing the white background with apple logo 1st, the screen shows gray background with globe image at the center.. then, it shows a folder icon (still at the center) with a question mark printed on it then the finder icon printed on it (like an animated image or something)... then it proceeds to the normal tiger starup screen...
...and then everytime i start up, the brightness is always 0 so the screen is black so id always have to press F2 a number of times...
    what is going on here???

    Hi, cannonball8.
    1. re: Globe > Flashing Question Mark > Normal Startup
Your startup disk is set incorrectly. The globe indicates it is trying to startup from a network volume. Then it can't find the startup disk (Flashing question mark), then after searching all available volumes, it finds it and starts up.1.1. In System Preferences > Startup Disk, select the hard drive in your Mac on which Mac OS X is installed. That should correct the problem.
1.2. As a general check to assure none of the "usual troublemakers" are affecting your startup dik, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.2. re: Black screen. We need to know exactly what model Mac you have, e.g. PowerBook G4 15-inch.
    3. These problems may be related to PRAM settings being lost. Depending on the specific Mac you have, and its age, this could be due to the need to replace the backup battery. The backup battery provides an infinitesimal amount of power to maintain the system settings saved in PRAM. To ascertain if your Mac has a backup battery, see "Macintosh Family: Batteries and Part Numbers, Part 2."
Radio Shack is usually the easiest place to find a replacement backup battery. Batteries Plus is another chain of stores that carry unusual batteries. You can also try searching PriceWatch using the part number as your search criteria to look for the battery online.
    Good luck!

  • Trouble booting up...HELP!

I have had problems booting up on my laptop for several weeks now. It started where sometimes the Toshiba screen would come up, and then the laptop would never finish booting. Sometimes it would go through fine, and then I could do what I wanted. Sometimes, though, it would go through and end up freezing and I'd have to shut the power off.
Well, the other day it started getting stuck on the Windows screen. I let it go for awhile thinking it might eventually work, but then it went to a black screen that told me I needed to hit control+alt+delete. I did, and that same screen came up. I then restarted my laptop, and now it goes directly to that black screen with the control+alt+delete message.
What has happened, and is there a way to fix it?

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk drive.
This is an alternative to repairing the hard drive from the Install disc, and should correct things if an error on the hard drive is the cause of the problem.
Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
To attempt to get the iBook to force-boot into OS 9, you can press Command-Option-Shift-Delete while starting up. This instructs the iBook to skip the last boot OS instruction which is saved in PRAM and seek another startup disk from which to boot.
Good luck. Please let us know how things go.

  • Since installing Yosemite arrangement of apps on the launchpad keep on resetting

After installing Yosemite the arrangement of my apps on the launchpad had changed, didn't think much of it so I rearranged the apps back. Turned off my macbook, when I turned it back on I noticed the positioning of the apps had reset. Foolishly I arranged them back, turned it off when I next came back, it reset again.
For example Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Outlook all used to be on the first page of the launchpad, now it keeps on resetting to the second.
Oddly enough all the non pre-installed apps are located on the 2nd and 3rd page of the launchpad in alphabetical order, this is by default. But the pre-installed apps I believe have stayed in the position I originally arranged them in as they're not in alphabetical order.
Can someone at least explain why the arrangement of apps isn't staying?

I had the same problem after upgrading von snow lion to yosemite but with help of  this article I solved it:

  • Re-arrange launchpad icons

Using Yosemite (10.10.1), how to re-arrange launchpad icons?
The technique that worked in my earlier version on OS X is described in this article:
    http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_navigate_organize_and_delete_apps_laun chpad
That technique no longer works. After re-boot, the launchpad icons appear in the original order, with my changes thrown away.

  • Launchpad Icon Arrangement

    Hi,
I was wondering how you go about arranging the icons in Launchpad. I lov e the new feature, a bit like my iPhone, and I was just wondering how you can personalise the icon arrangement and hide some that are rarely used.
    Thank You

Launchpad's folder structure is completely separate from the Applications folder's structure. So making in folders won't make them in Launchpad, or vice versa. For example, I don't use Launchpad currently, so nothing in there is organized, but in my Applications folder it is, because that's what I use. Pretty much organize whatever one you want - they don't affect each other.

Everytime I open launchpad it arranges my apps randomly. But I want to arrange them alphabetically and they should stay so.

I've had some luck with this app - http://launchpadcleaner.com/ . The beta version they have does the auto-arrange alphabetically.  When I say some luck, there are still times I boot up and find my apps all messed up - on-going bug in Lion.  Their is a restore with this though that you can use to put them as you arranged.
