Layer 3 Roaming for Voice

What are people using on wireless networks that have VLAN's for voice and data to provide Layer 3 roaming funcionality. Need wireless voice users to be able to roam across subnets seemlessly. Layer 2 works great but scalling to 2000 users. Need a Layer 3 solution. Does anyone have this working ? With a non-cisco wireless voice device?

IP mobility is the feature you are looking for, I guess Cisco will be coming with voice handsets with this feature soon.

  • CCKM vs Mobility Groups - Roaming for Voice Clients

    Hi there,
I am looking at deploying wireless at our site for voice, I have a couple of questions regarding Roaming between APs and best way to acheive fast roaming for latency senstive voice and other applications.
According to Cisco SRND for Voice over Wireless (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Mobility/vowlan/41dg/vowlan_ch5.html), it is recommended:
"Fast roaming algorithms include Cisco Centralized Key Management (CCKM)  and Proactive Key Caching (PKC). CCKM and PKC allow a WLAN client to  roam to a new AP and re-establish a new session key—known as the  Pairwise Transient Key (PTK)—between the client and AP without requiring  a full IEEE 802.1X/EAP reauthentication to a AAA/RADIUS server."
But let's say I used WPA/PSK for my WLAN and just rely on mobility information in the controller to perform the handover, would this still be best practice.
I have actually tested both and they work quite well, neither drops a call or experiences any degragation in voice quality. I suppose I am asking for a real world perspective and if I should adhere to the SRND on this one?
    Many thanks

    Hi Tony,
    Great question BTW.
CCKM/OKC/PKC only comes into play when EAP is used. During the EAP process the PMK is seeded from the MSK. From the PMK, it is seeding the PTK. With no advance romaing in use as a client roams from AP to AP you would have to redo that process all over.
When you use PSK.. Your MSK is your PMK and there is no need to go back to the radius server for a new PMK. So your client and ap exchange this info.. no need for a radius server ..
    Does this make sense?

  • Minimum hardware for 'voice' lab ? - Please answer.

    Hi,
    I've got (3) C2610's running IP Plus IOS 12.3. I also have (2) Cat 2912XL.
If I want to play with VoIP configurations, how much am I going to miss if I don't have a Layer 3 switch ? I mean, the Cat 3550 is kind of a little expensive for me and therefore I would like to play with VoIP without a layer 3 switch for now, if possible.
    Please advise.

Thanks. It is a C2610. I put 64D and 16F and I am running in reality the Enterprise Basic image from the XM platform. The problem is that it is 12.3 and I see that XM's 12.4 don't run on C2610's.
    How about the switch ?
Can I practice voice labs (at CVOICE level) and dispense the need for layer 3 switches ?

  • Layer 3 roaming issue

    Hi all,
i have two wireless networks with two subnet (see the attached drawing) , all controllers run v4.2 access points type is 1020 .
the first network in hall 1 have 4 wlc in subnet 172.16.40.X  , the security is WEP key for wireless phone
the second network in hall two have one WiSM in subnet 172.26.40.Y the security is WEP key for wireless phone also
all controllers and WiSM in same Mobility group .
the issue is  ,when   wireless phone roaming from hall one to hall two or from hall two to one it dropped the connection and not working
    please advice

    Examples :
    WLC1 has management as 192.168.1.2
    WLC2 has management as 192.168.1.3
WLC1 has the SSID "employees" linked to interface "emp_int" which has ip 192.168.50.2
WLC2 has the SSID "employees" linked to interface "employee_int" which has ip 192.168.80.2
In this case, we have layer 3 roaming. Meaning that normally the client would need to change its ip from 192.168.50.x to 192.168.80.x but thanks to mobility anchoring mechanism, the WLC2 forwards all traffic back to WLC1 so that the client can keep its ip address in 192.168.50.x
If the situation was that both employee interfaces were in the 192.168.50.x on both WLCs, then we would have layer 2 roaming. Meaning the client entry is simply moved to WLC2 and WLC2 handles all the traffic. WLC1 has nothing to do anymore with this client.
conclusion : the ip addresses of the management interfaces don't matter to decide if it's layer 2 or 3 roaming, it's the ip of the dynamic interface of SSID which matters

  • 5508 WLC HA pair and layer 3 roaming

    Hey,
We have a pair of 5508 WLC's configured in HA (primary/standby). We have a single SSID that we're broadcasting across each floor of our head office. The AP's are in flexconnect mode so users pickup an IP address from the DHCP range for that building level and that's all working well.
The problem I have is that users cannot roam between floors without losing access to the network. They roam to the AP's on the different floors, and maintain wireless connection throughout the building, but they cannot connect to anything on the network when outside of the floor that contains an IP range that matches the client's IP. I was told by a number of technical consultants that this sort of layer 3 roaming should work in this configuration. When users go to a different floor, they retain their original IP and the traffic is tunneled (EOIP) back to the controller to maintain network connectivity, however this does not appear to be happening.
Firstly I'm wondering if this is possible with a HA pair configured in active/standby. All of the documentation around layer 3 roaming seems to involve at least 2 controllers, the foreign and the anchor. In this case as they're a HA pair their is technically only a single controller.
If it is possible to do layer 3 roaming on a single controller (intra-controller), if anyone can provide some guidance on things I should be checking or looking out for that would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Still though, I had a number of technical consultants from a very large system integrator design this setup and despite my asking a number of times how this roaming could work I was simply told it would.
    ROFL!
We contracted a consulting company/implementors to do a wireless job (back in 2011) for a particular project (politics dictate I keep stay away from it).  They had one "wireless expert".
Then one day, I got a call from the "wireless expert" and the phone conversation went like this, "It's me.  I am doing another wireless project for another agency.  But I would like to know how do you convert an autonomous AP to controller-based IOS".   <FACEPALM>
Long story short:  They won't know.  Not all of them know.  Their main concern is YOUR MONEY in their hands.  That's all.  But I can tell you this:  I am the end user.  I configure stuff.  Roaming works if you get the basics correct.  Roaming works if you know what you want and you get it done right.   Scott Fella and Steve Rodriguez, two regular in this forum, (and works for CDW) and they are good.  There's another "mad Texan" by the name of George Stefanick is another one.    An Aussie by the name of Rasika is also around.
The most basic item is roaming is how you space your APs.  Unless you've got wireless antennas coming out of your ears, you need to organize a wireless site survey.  And when you want to do the a "good" wireless site survey, you "future proof" your requirements.  Right now,  my wireless site survey is aimed at "wireless VoIP" requirement.

  • Mobility group -without layer 3 roaming

    Hi all,
With a N+1 WLC deployment, is it possible to disable layer 3 roaming while enabling Mobility group feature on the backup controller ?
based on the network setup layer 3 mobility is not required. However,  we need to both controllers to exchange all security related  parameters so that excluded clients info etc  will be in sync during a failover scenario.
I do not  intend to use ACLs as such.
    Any thoughts much appreciated.
    cheers,
    Janesh

    Hi Nicolas,
    Many thanks for the  reply.
Let me throw some light on the matter
-Why exactly do you want to block layer 3 roaming ?
Buildings are miles apart so roaming  will only happen within a building and it will be  intra controller.
Also  I have seen on cisco doco that Layer 3 roaming is not preferred.
How does it impact you as anyway it's transparent for the network ?
As I mentioned layer 3 roaming is not required so I don't see a point enabling it.Why tax the controller unnecessarily?
One controller serves all the APs at one data centre and the other is the backup. No salt and pepper  scenario.
-Does that mean that you're ok with layer 2 roaming ? If yes, just configure all WLCs to serve the same subnets for the clients
Layer2 roaming will happen  within the controller as  primary and backup controllers are Layer -3 separated.
There is no layer 2 adjacency between the controllers.
    over to you
    cheers,
    Janesh

  • Layer 3 Roaming

Is there a way for a client on one autonomous AP in user vlan A to roam to second autonomous AP in user vlan B whilst retaining IP address without using WDS. So Mobile IP Layer 3 roaming possibly through the switch/router?
The two APs are connected to a 3560 which is connected to an 877. The vlans are layer 3 on the SVI of the 3560.

    Hello Mat,
no, it's not possible without WDS. In fact, regular WDS doesn't support Layer 3 roaming, either. You need to do WDS with Cisco's 6500 WLSM module. WLSM was announced end of life in 2006.

  • IPhone 5s with hearing aids via Bluetooth. Need to use the phone for voice, what's the best distance that the mic will pick up your voice

I wear hearing aids that are made for Apple, the audio will go into the hearing aids via Bluetooth. I'll need to use my phone for voice only.. I drive for work and have a wok oh one too and both are synced to a bluetooh headset (LG). I'm trying to figure out how to talk on both phones ( use speakerphone on work phone?) without using a bluretooh headset.  I don't know the range of the microphone on the IPHON, thinking about hanging it around my neck or put the phone into a stand/holder on the dash and use the speakerphone feature.  Looking for ideas to make this simple

You can't do anything with that problem.
Take your iPhone to the closest Apple Store and they will give you new one for 200€/$ or if you bought your iPhone in less than 12 months you will get it for free.

  • Problem with roaming for specific apps

    Hi :)
I have a problem with my iPhone 4s:
When i use roaming on my iPhone 4s i try to save some money by turning off roaming for specific apps, but one day for ca. 3 weeks ago it stopped working!
Some apps can use roaming but some can't ;(
There are like 10 apps always turned on, but if i try turning roaming off for an app that is on already it wont work!
If i close settings and reopen it, the app is now denied using roaming!
If i try allowing an app it changes but still wont work and after some time it gets in the same possission i cant change!
I have never experienced this before and i could't find an answer on google ;(
If you know how to fix it please respond to me here :)

P.S: Im really sorry if there are bad english here, but im mot english sooooo..... yeah

You are on the right track suspecting DHCP conflicts.
To configure your "roaming network" connect your "slave" Extreme to your main Internet router - either directly or through a switch - and place it in "bridge mode". That will work.
A router will be distributing IP addresses using DHCP. Anything connected to it should be configured as a bridge, the essential difference being that a bridge does not distribute IP addresses.
I do not believe your "slave" Extreme will function connected as it is to the "main" Extreme, but may work if you assign it a static IP address. It is not unusual for it to retain this static IP after having been changed to DHCP if its lease is still valid.
The OK article you referenced must be terribly outdated if it is referring to AirPort Admin Utility. That has not been used in about a decade. Read this one:
Wi-Fi base stations: Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations
Unfortunately its screenshots refer to AirPort Utility 5.6, which has been replaced with the prettier, though less useful 6.2.

  • Need to create and adjustment layer to compensate for undesirable hue caused by lens

I’m looking for some help to set up an adjustment layer to compensate for a specific lens colouration issue. Basically I’m using a GoPro (on a drone) but I have fitted an aftermarket flat lens. Sharpness is good, but the lens has a well known issue – it results in pink hue around the edges/corners. Most of the time it is barely noticeable, other times it jumps out. It also depends on the monitor I am using eg. my TV seems to bring it out a lot more than my laptop.
Here is an example - look around 0:35 to 0:40 http://vimeo.com/117790732
And to try get an idea of where the issue is on the frame, I picked an example image of frost covered grass, very early in the morning. I then cranked up the saturation to 100% and this is what it looks like:
I would like to be able to compensate for this. Presumably this should done with an adjustment layer made in Photoshop which I can then import into Premier Pro. Can anyone advise as to how I do that?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jacques

    Hi Trevor
Thanks for your reply. I did what you suggested and created 2 masked adjustment layers which are basically concentric rings with differing levels of magenta reduction and I then feathered the edges. I have attached 2 images below to show the before and after effect. I’m working on getting this more accurate and I’m also going to look into the technique posted by Normfb. Big thanks to you Trevor for suggesting this – this is all quite new to me and it was very useful to play around with these adjustments layers, masks etc.

  • One E1 for voice and digital modem...

    Hello All!!!
My question is about remote access and Ip-telephony ...
    I use cisco3825 with PVDM2-12DM NM-1CE1T1-PRI cards installed.
I have only one E1 channel.
Can I install on router IOS with CCME support and use this E1 for voice too?
How I can detect what call should be forwarded to CME or Digital modem?
    Thank you very much...

You can't do that with the hardware that you have now.
I recommend you get the following:
one VWIC or VWIC2, with two ports.
    and
one HWIC-1CE1T1-PRI that supports the DMs,
    and
one PVDM2-64. (you cannot use the -32 because you have two ports)
    and
    IOS 12.4(11)XW6
    see:
    http://cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps2797/product_data_sheet0900aecd80710c88.html
    and

    and
    http://cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk652/tk653/technologies_tech_note09186a00804794c6.shtml
One the VWIC one port you connect to telco. the other using with a crossed cable, you connect to the HWIC.
You route voice calls to the HWIC based on calling or called number. Automatic recognition of modem/voice calls is not supported.
Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

  • One number for faxing and for voice

    Hi,
I would like to know if it possible to have one number for faxing and for voice.
What I have read up is that Cisco can detect the fax tones. What I would like to do is route all inbound faxes to a viop dial-peer and all voice to another e1 port.
I am just looking for some more info if this can be done.
    Thanks you?

Yes this is possible with either cisco fax relay or t.38 fax relay.

  • Eight-Class Model QoS for voice and video

One of the QoS recomendation in the SRND "Enterprise QoS" is to create a Eight-Class QoS Model utilizing a seperate priority queue for voice and video.
It says that even though you have only one physical priority queue, that LLQ has an implicit policer that allows for time-division multiplexing of the single priority queue. This implicit policer abstract the fact that there is essentially a single LLQ within the algorithm and, thus, allows for the "provisioning" of multiple LLQs.
My question is if anyone has tried this and if there are any limitations on the platforms that can support this "dual-LLQ design."

Design guide which is basically the QoSDesign recommendation bible.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/solution/esm/qossrnd.pdf
It has a large section for WAN recommendations...while you may not
need to follow one of these Based on my understanding what what you
have for a link (DS3) and what you are trying to accomplish, I
believe the following section would be a good place to start.
    - WAN Aggregator QoS Design
    - WAN Edge Classification and Provisioning Models
    - High Link Speed QoS Class Model

  • Using 3G phone for voice only

After purchasing my beloved iPhone 4, I would like to pass my old 3G phone to my wife, who uses voice only, no data. AT&T says the iPhone 3G will not work properly without a data plan and cannot be used for voice only service. Is AT&T correct? Is there another solution?

AT&T correct? Is there another solution?
Yes. AT&T requires a data plan for ALL iphones on their network. There is no other solution, if you want to use the phone on AT&T's network. If you try and use the phone without a data plan attached, they will catch you & bill accordingly for a data plan. They can tell what type of phone is being used from the IMEI number. The phone will work just fine without a data plan & data turned off, however.
