Layer break point without track

hi there,
i have a layer break problem on DSP4..
i have i project contain 804 menu, 0 track and a total size is 8.1GB
for the break point reason, i generate a dummy track , 10 second
black video and create a dual layer break point.
in the vts editor, i put this track on a middle of my structure,
build fine but format say "a suitable marker could not be found"
here's my vts structure... can anybody help about this... thanks

Good God...804 menus must take years to open a project!
You're probably need to move some menus from 7 to 9...you're only 12 mb away from filling the disc. There are other files that need to be compiled too.

Dual Layer Break Point problem

Hi,
I just found out after I updated DSP 4 to version 4.0.3 my Layer 1 on every project since updating gets corrupted!
I thought it was the Dual Layer discs I used that caused the problem, but after I re-installed DVD Studio to the original version 4.0.0 the same project worked perfect.
Anyone else have issues with Dual Layer Break Point after updating to 4.0.3?
I have tried different chapters as layerbreak points on my project, and even a test project, with the same result. The finished discs is barely playable on some DVD players, showing wierd interference and noise, and DVD Player on mac crashes when reaching the dual layer break point, and the plant i send the master have a software to check DVDs and they said that it couldnt find/was corrupt Layer 1 on one of my discs. Hope someone can fix this, DSP is the best software otherwise!

Dual Layer Break Point?

So, I found the perfect dual layer break point in my project. I have a 3 hour 58 minute video to put on DVD and set the layer break point at 2 hours 2 minutes. However, when I went to format the disc, it told me that layer 0 was too large.
When using the automatic setting, it told me the same thing.
What is the key to setting a layer break point?

Hi Graiai,
The basic rule is to ensure that layer 0 is larger than layer 1. And obviously to set it at a point where it's not very noticable (especially for those naughty players which take a moment to refocus and have non exitent buffers).
But there are also strict guidlines as to the positioning of the point and also how much larger the second layer is. Jim Taylor's DVD Demystified is a good place to start if you are thinking of doing some serious authoring.
TO overcome your particular problem you need to find another appropriate point closer to the head of the track. I use DVDAfterEdit which takes all the guess work out for this. But for you at this stage it will be a bit of trial and error until you can get a build done.

"Dual Layer Break Point" drop down window is greyed out

Hi All,
I have a 6.8 GB project ready to be burned to disc. The Build went fine but when I try to format, I chose Format > Disc Volume > Red Laser > Dual > OTP> Dual Layer Break Point > TRack 1 and then all the 10 chapter choices that I have to choose from are grayed out. I can't make a choice to place my break.
I wouldn't think that selecting automatic would work if DVD Studio Pro has grayed out all the choices. Now, I don't know even if I try using the long method would work.
Even still, I would like to know why this happened. This has never happened before over a 3 year period.
I am using Memorex DVD+R DL discs (worked fine in the past).
Any remedies?

There has to be a break point where it crosses over from Layer 0 to Layer 1, if you have no Chapter Markers at all (or a limited number of Markers, none of which fall near the point which is a bit more than half the size of the assets you will get an error that a Layer is the wrong size or all markers will be greyed)
What you do is
1.) Set up markers in the areas where your would guesstimate the Layer Break(s) should be
2.) Build the project (but not format)
3.) Format a Disc (in the dialog that comes up, click on advanced tab, then where it says break point, use the pulldown which will have all valid breakpoint markers dark/black, while non-valid Layer Break Markers will be faded) If no marker is black there is no marker in the right place, regardless of you use automatic or not. You will need to insert more markers, and guesstimate again.
4.) If the layer break(s) are not where you would like them (in other words a place where they may be more noticable) use VTS view to re-order then go back to step 1.
When you do enough DLs, you start getting a sense based on the size of tracks where things should land

Problem chosing layer break point for multi-movie DL DVD

HI. If you're authoring a DL DVD containing several short movies which can be selected from a menu in any order, how are you supposed to know which order they're burnt to disc in so as to know where the layer break point needs to be? Is media burnt in the order it's added to the project or what? Does it actually matter about choosing a LBP manually so long as DVDSP provides a choice of automatically determined points?

DVD Studio Pro Dual Layer Break Point Problem

I have a problem with a disc that I am burning. It is a dual layer (the break point is not set to seamless) with 1 movie that is about 3.6 GB and 1hr 23 min long, a 30 min slideshow, another 30 min extra and five other extras that total to about 20 min. I put the dual layer break point at the beginning of the slideshow, everything played fine on the computer, but on the Panasonic DVD player it just freezes at 35 seconds into the slideshow. Its never had a problem with DLs before. Itried the DVD on my softmodded Wii, on a program for it called WiiMC (it uses Mplayer) and everything played fine. I tried another burn where i set the break point to fifteen minutes before the end on the main 1:23 movie and on the DVD player it still froze at 35 seconds on the slideshow. Is there anything that you guys can suggest to help?

How to manually create layer breaking point for DVD9

Hello, I was wondering if someone could please tell me how I would go about to manually set the layer break point for a DVD9 project that I burned onto 2 DLT tapes. The total size of the DVD is 6.3GB.
I had used the "automatic" setting for burning the DLTs and sent them to a replicator. They came back saying that the layer 0 tape did not allow enough headroom for their Ripguard protection.
I've always used the automatic setting and this is the first time I am asked to manually set it. SO now I need to figure out how I can put a certain amount of data on one DLT tape and the rest on the other DLT.
I am a beginner at this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the information you have regarding RipGuard and the ability to copy RipGuard protected discs is a little outdated.
Can RipGuard be broken? Yes, anything can be broken into, including the DoD Website by 14 yr old chinese students... but that doesn't mean there isn't value in protecting the DVD.
Also, RipGuard is regularly updated, just like Antivirus software, so while older versions of RipGuard can be broken more easily, the latest versions of RipGuard are significantly more difficult to circumvent by existing software.
But again, the point isn't to create the unbreakable 'holy grail' DVD copy protection, but rather to protect something of value.
When you leave your house in the morning, do you close your front door and lock it? Of course you do, but why? So no one will break in. But do you think locking up your house is really going to stop someone from going around to the side of the house and busting out a window if they really want to get in? Of course it wont. If someone wants to break into your house, they will find a way.
Same thing with DVDs. You lock your house because it provides a method of protection, a barrier to make it more difficult and to keep honest people honest. That's what RipGuard, or any copy protection software does.
So the question isn't why would you protect your DVD, but rather why wouldn't you? In most cases if you prevent just a few illegal copies of your DVD from being ripped, it has already more than paid for itself.

Dual-layer break point is not cooperating!

I have authored a dual layer disk. I have tagged chapter 18 as the dual-layer break point. In the project chapter 18 is clearly tagged properly, including the little black dot appearing in the proper place on the timeline. But after the disk is burned, which I am having to do using Toast and and external burner, the dual-layer break point is happening on chapter 19. Does anyone know why this would be happening. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

As a follow-up to Jake's answer, the reason Toast does its own thing with respect to the dual layer break point is because the .img file that DVDSP saves does not contain any break point information. So, you'd have the same problem with any burning program, not just Toast.
This is on p. 584 of the DVDSP 4.1 manual, if anyone's interested.

Dual Layer Break Points

Ideally, I would like to create my own break point. Using the OTP method, I know that I need to have the 1st layer larger than the second. Can I simply choose a break just over the 1/2 way in my Movie? ie. 1hr32 long for the first layer, 1hr28 long for the second...or does it have to be close to the 3.9Gig mark before changing layers? My break point of choice happens to be the only place that I have a fade to black, that's why it makes it ideal.
I also have several Chapter Markers in the Movie (that don't fade to black)..so if I choose the Auto Break Point option, I don't know how find where the program has chosen to break it at. I want to view before I burn..or atleast know where it is. Is this info in the Build folder somewhere?

when you click on any chapter marker, the property inspector allows you to assign it as a dual layer break point. layer 0 must be larger than layer 1. Also you can place a marker and in the property inspect uncheck chapter marker and check dual layer break point.

Dual Layer Break Point Q

If I allow DVDSP to automatically set the Dual Layer break Point, is it possible for me ti find where it placed it?
It would probably be pretty obvious in the average project but I am working with a project with about 40 video assets and is very interactive so it jumps around all over the place.

After you build the project and then go to format for DVD-R etc you will see the setting for DL break point (it is set to automatic), but you can then click to see acceptable DL break points (markers).

Can't move Layer break point

In desperate straits here. I've created a dual layer project and set a break point via the disc inspector drop down menu. Now I need to change the break point but DVDSP won't execute the change. I've deleted the VTS build folders as Apple recommended but that has no effect. This is the second project- after running into the same problem prior, the only solution that I could find was port all of my assets and start a new project. I was able to set the break point once but now I'm back to where I was the first time. Any help that anyone could give would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply...unfortunately that isn't the problem. I haven't tested my theory yet, but I now have an idea what happened and if correct, I would consider it a bug. A big bug.
When setting my break point, I did so via the disc inspector drop down menu and went to the track of choice and selected "track" as my breakpoint rather than selecting a mark of any sort. Once formatted and built, it seemed to have locked the breakpoint in place and would not even let me delete the track in an effort to clear it. After porting all of the items (via item descriptions) into a new project I created the breakpoint using a marker in the track. Viola, it now behaves as it should.
I will be testing my theory as soon as I have a free moment...meanwhile, my layer breaks will come from a marker specifically created for it.

Dual Layer break point - multiple videos

I have 4 videos to go one the DVD, comes to 8.5 GB in total.
1. 45mins
2. 1hr 15mins
3. 40 mins
4. 35 mins
How do I know which video to put the break point on and at what time.
I've been using trial and error for the last couple of days now and error keeps winning.
All I keep getting are various Error messages, this is my most recent
+Formatting was not successful. Layer 1 exceeds the maximum layer size allowed. Please choose a suitable marker location that will support this condition.+

It could be that you have exceeded the disc size, but assuming you haven't there has to be a break point where it crosses over from Layer 0 to Layer 1, if you have no Chapter Markers at all (or a limited number of Markers, none of which fall near the point which is a bit more than half the size of the assets you will get an error that a Layer is the wrong size.
What you do is
1.) Set up markers in the areas where your would guesstimate the Layer Break(s) should be. (You can build the project and use VTS view to see where about halfway plus a bit is located and make sure to put a few markers in the track in that VTS. If you have not made audio AC3, you should encode to AC3.

Break Point, Two Tracks

The details:
Dual Layer Disc
Track One, 1 hr 30 min
Track Two, 1 hr 15 min
Do I need to tell DVDSP to create a break point "between" the two movies or will it do it automatically. In other words, how can I put one Track One on Layer One and Track Two on Layer Two so that I don't have to see the break point.
I know that I may be able to compress this down to a single layer disc with more compression, but want to keep quality high.

What you should do is place a dummy track between them with a few chapter markers. (In DVD SP in VTS view you can check, make track 1 VTS1, dummy VTS 2 and track 2 VTS3) then Build the project.
After building, go to Format, then look in the pulldown for layer break, permitted layer breaks should be in black, not greyed out. Set the break point to the black marker you would like (you may need to add some more markers)
Another approach is just add black time at the end of track 1 with markers there and make a story that just plays the material, this may be a better way actually if you can do it.

Dual layer break point not working with 4.1

Hi, I recently made a dual layered dvd in DVD SP 4.03. I set it to automatic, and OTP and unchecked the "seamless". All was well, I burned a couple DVDs no problem. Then, I got in the mail FinalCut Studio upgrade which upgrades DVDSP to 4.1. So I upgraded and then ran software update to get to 4.1.1.
Now, the same project won't burn because it reports an error due to the break point, even when I set it manually, it won't work.
Any thoughts?

A dialog box pops up and says "Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. See the DVDSP User's manual for more info."
The log says the following "Compile Completed Successfully

Break Points for Dual Layer Discs

I've read and re-read the DVDSP4 manual on break-points. They are giving me the hardest time even still. Is there any way to by-pass the muxing process and not have to wait that long to find out if there is the correct balance of space used for each layer on the disc? IOW, is there a way to automatically check if the layers are right without choosing the "auto break point" option?

Hi Drew, when you say set a bunch of markers in the general area, what types of markers are you talking about (ie. chapter, button, dual layer break point)? I can only set one "dual layer break point", should i be able to set more than one? I'm working on this dual layer project and it is driving me nuts!
