Layer Color not selectable?

I have an imported svg file that I've saved to Illustrator 17.1. I can't seem to change the layer colors (they're all the same light blue) - the only options that come up in the Layer Options dialog are checkboxes for Lock and Show. Oddly, duplicating a layer seems to give the new layer a different color, but again I can't set the color of that layer myself.
Really want to be able to do this, as I use layer colors to track their status (red = not even close to done, yellow = in progress, green = done in MY eyes, blue = done in the CUSTOMER's eyes).
Thanks
Tom

It was an Inkscape file saved as Plain SVG.
The strokes and fills generally imported fine. I had some filter effects and embedded pngs that did not import, but I was not unhappy about that. The layer structure generally came over fine, although there were many (sometimes MANY MANY) more Groups than in the original. Still, not hard to fix.

  • Command-clicking a layer does not select it in the Layer panel

    In earler version of PS, command clicking a layer in the artboard would select the layer in the layer pallet so it could be manipulated. This does not seem to be the case in CS6 (I'm getting the highest level group selected)

    Command key brings up the move tool. And you have different settings for auto-select in CS6 than in your previous version.
    Go check the settings for the move tool.

  • Color range selection + layer styles

    Hello--
    Help me if you can!
    I have had it on good authority (my photoshop instructor) that color range selection hasn't been working correctly for some time.
    I'm using CS2, version 9.0.2 on an IMac os X version 10.5.8.
    I am often working with multiple layers that are not similar at all.  When I have one layer active and do a color selection, it may also select the color range on inactive layers.  Then, if I do a fill, for example, it may affect areas on other layers that were inadvertantly color selected.  I know there are ways to ask photoshop to perform a function on all layers, but I don't see this as an option or setting with color range selection.  I had started to assume it was sort of like crop, which affects all layers, but when I asked, my teacher says it should only be selecting/affecting the layer that is active.
    I found I can deal with this by 'closing the eyes' (making non-visible) the other layers...but that is a hassle and sometimes hides exactly what I need to see.
    Then noticed, just lately, that when I use a layer style, it is no longer showing up on my layer palette.  Maybe I don't understand correctly, but I thought any layer style addition would show up on the palette under the name of that layer.  If I happen to remember that a particular layer used a layer style, I can still click on the layer styles icon and alter it, but it isn't displaying on the layer palette any more--so I cannot toggle or discard the effect simply, and it is hard to know why a layer looks the way it does without that information.
    Could be I'm corrupted and need to deinstall/reinstall?  Is there something I'm missing about these functions , or something I accidentally changed?  I would really appreciate any help or information.

    Yes your instructor is wrong, it always selects visible pixels, and always has. You can however create a selection before you go into Color Range, and it will only work within that selection though.
    If you want Color Range to work in precisely the same way as it always did in the old versions you need to make sure that you ..
    • Highlight a non masked layer and
    • Uncheck the somewhat bizarrely entitled "Localised Color Clusters" checkbox
    The changes to Color Range happened a few versions ago, to my memory it was with CS4 .  The main improvement was that they made it more powerful with the capability to produce better more refined selections. They also unfortunately made the daft mistake of making the command work DIFFERENTLY depending on whether you have a masked or a non masked layer selected. This is not very logical really because it just causes confusion, and doesn't really achieve anything constructive in my opinion. No one who knows what they are doing wants to modify an existing mask using Color Range.

  • Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple object

    Hi,
    Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple objects?
    I would want to do this when I have a bunch of objects hidden under some other objects on the artboard. This feature is available in PSD, so I assume Illustrator should have it.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply, Harron.
    I'm using CS4 & below.
    Highlighting object - click on object in layers palette & it turns blue
    Select object - click on object in layers palette to the right of the circle, which creates a square, and selects the object on the artboard
    How do I shift-select multiple objects in the layers palette...select 50 objects with a click, then a shift-click? Shift-select works for highlighting, but not selecting. On most programs shift-select is used to grab a bunch of stuff...:0)
    In the past I have inadvertently selected multiple objects in the layers palette, by somehow alt?-dragging over the layers...or something...I can't re-create it.

  • Scanning conflict   Acrobat 9 pro   "Color Format Selected Not Supported"

    I have had several conflicts with Adobe Acrobat 9 and my HP C5180 printer/scanner/copier.   I have downloaded new drivers from HP.   When I try to create  a PDF from the scanner,  I get this conflict warning:   "Color Format Selected Not supported".    So, I change the color format selections in both HP and Acrobat and I still get the warning.    I must admit I haven't tried the black and white color format.  But I want to scan simple color images.  No luck.
    Has anyone else had such a problem?

    This may have nothing to do with your problem, but -- at least with Acrobat 8, there is a 100MB limit to the scanned image. Are you trying to scan something larger than that?

  • Layer Background color not support on AP Element

    Hi I am new to dreamweaver. I just started learning how to
    use it, and I can't figure out why when I am validating the
    browser, I kept on getting a message that the layer background
    color is not supported in the AP element. I looked at my code and
    it seems fine. All I did was just insert the AP layer and I change
    the background color. Is there something I am doing wrong?

    Thank you. That's telling you that layer-background-color is
    NOT supported
    in those browsers (in fact, it's invalid HTML, being
    supported only in IE5
    and earlier). You should use CSS to specify colors, not the
    Property
    inspector, and you will avoid such traps. In fact, in CS3,
    when you use the
    Property inspector, the proper CSS is written in the
    stylesheet for you.

  • Color not changing on Selected Menu tab

    I'm creating a custom css and in doing so have been trying to change the text color of the selected menu tab. I've added it to my stylesheet but it is not changing upon running it. If I change the menu tab specifically via the properties of the tab, it will change. Is 'color' something we can change?
    Here is a snipet of my css:
    .af|menuTabs::selected {color:red;
    white-space:nowrap;
    font-family:Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,sans-serif;
    font-size:200%;
    background-color:white;
    font-weight:bold;
    text-decoration:none;
    Thanks,
    Lisa

A: Color not changing on Selected Menu tab

Your '.' before af|menuTabs is wrong.
It's just "af|menuTabs::selected" not ".af|menuTabs::selected".
Also, you need to use the ::selected-link pseudo-element to style the color of the text.
/* Make the selected tab bold */
af|menuTabs::selected-link
font-weight: bold;
font-size: 14pt;
color: green;
}

  • When I click "File" and then "New" it keeps opening a new file as a layer and not a background. RGB is selected as the mode.

    When I click "File" and then "New" it keeps opening a new file as a layer and not a background. RGB is selected as the mode.
    With new files opening as a layer and not a background I'm not able to create multiple layers and it wont let me convert the layer to the background.
    How did this happen. I used PS just yesterday and had no problems. Today my computer did mandatory updates and now this.

    Yes. You are using the Ellipse Tool's Pixel option. So it is laying down pixels as it is supposed to do without creating a layer.
    Choose the Shape option:
    Also Layer menu > New Layer creates layers and the curled paper at the bottom of your Layers palette also creates a New Layer. I hope those work.

  • Could not make a new layer from the selection because the selected area is empty

    I have Photoshop CS5 and I'm trying to do a selection on a new layer and when I copy it this message appears: "could not make a new layer from the selection because the selected area is empty"..
    The new layer is selected, no other layer is selected. What the hell am I doing wrong???....Yes I'm a beginner.. ....please help?

    Hi There,
    So just to clarify you have made a new blank layer, made a selection on that layer and then done a Layer > New > Layer via Copy (or cmd J).
    The reason that you would get this error message is you have made a selection on a blank layer (effectively selecting nothing) and tried to duplicate it and Photoshop won't let you do that.
    When doing New Layer via Copy or New Layer via cut you selection needs to include some painted (coloured) pixels.
    Regards
    Paul
    PS. Maybe you could explain what you are trying to achieve by copying the layer and I could help a little more.

  • Command-clicking layer name does not load layer as a selection (Photoshop CS2)

    Q: Why does Cmd-clicking a layer name not load the layer as a selection in Photoshop CS2?
    A: You must Cmd-click the layer thumbnail, not the layer name, to load the the layer as a selection.
    In Photoshop CS2 Cmd-clicking the layer name in the Layers Palette selects the layer. To select multiple layers use the following keystrokes:
    1. Multiple contiguous layers = Shift+click layer name
    2. Multiple non-contiguous layers = Cmd+click layer name
    See also Adobe Knowledgebase
    Document 329005

    It works for me and doesn't seem to care what tool i have selected or anything like that to make a difference. Maybe you should reset your preferences as it may be a glitch.
    Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift as soon as you tell photoshop to startup, and it will ask you if you want to delete the preferences, just click yes. (If you have a custom UI that you want to save, goto Windows>Workspace>Save Workspace, and then just reload it after resetting prefs.)

  • Is this a bug?(1st option of color picker not selectable)

    if default selectedColor is not in dataProvider ....
    try this code
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute">
         <mx:ColorPicker selectedColor="0x123456">
              <mx:dataProvider>
                   <mx:Array>
                        <mx:Object color='0xff0000' label='red'/>
                        <mx:Object color='0x00ff00' label='green'/>
                        <mx:Object color='0x0000ff' label='blue'/>
                   </mx:Array>
              </mx:dataProvider>
         </mx:ColorPicker>
    </mx:Application>
    notice that you can not select red if u don't select other color first

    and i figured out a quick way to fix it is ovewrite set selectedColor function
        public function set selectedColor(value:uint):void
            if (!indexFlag)
                var SI:int = findColorByName(value);
                   //if SI != -1  commit out this line
                    super.selectedIndex = SI;
            else
    but it only work when you specify the default selectedColor

  • Right click not selecting layer

    I have been using a trial version of Photoshop CS5 and have noticed that when I right click on a layer, the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected. Is this a bug of CS5? This gets rather annoying when you have a lot of layers and would like to get directed on the layer pallet just by clicking on the layer on the stage. Has anyone else found this a problem?

    the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected.
    … makes no sense. Or means something different to what you intended. As a guess try these…
    • Upgrade your trial to 12.0.1.
    • As C… suggests, Command clicking with the Move Tool auto-selects any layer you click on. There is also an option in the move tool called "auto select'  that you can change, which toggles this behavior.

  • How to make a layer not selectable in CC?

    After recent update (CC) the feature which was allowing the invisible layers (turned off by "eye" icon) to be not selectable by Move Tool is gone.
    So when one have a web page design with 300 layers and 3 states in groups and you decide to deactive some of them (make them invisible) you can still select them. So overall it makes imposible to selecet anything. You must do it manualy on the Layers pannel.
    See image below - so instead of selecting only visible layers (like in previous versions) now onet is forced to select every possible layers so in most cases all present layers in the file.
    Anyone have an idea how to work solve it?

    Hi Trevor,
    Thanks a lot for help but unfortunately that discussion leads to no solution for the problem of making layers not-selectable in new Photoshop CC.
    Its always nice to know that Adobe f***ed up webdesigners life again.
    Thanks again man!

  • What this mean? "could not rasterize because the pixel data for this layer is not"

    I've taken a color picture and made it black and white by doing the following: Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue/Saturation. I brought the saturation down to -100.  The pencil is selected and my foreground color is black.
    When I try to select the flowers in my picture to bring out their color (within the black and white image), I get a circle with a black line thru it and the error message "could not rasterize because the pixel data for this layer is not directly editable".  The steps I followed are working for most of my team but some of us are getting this error message.
    Any idea why and/or how to fix it?

    Ah, thank you!  I didn't have the mask selected. So once I did select it, the color came thru like magic.
