Layer malfunction
I copied the original background layer so that of course the original remains the original, but I must have clicked on something that causes every change I make on the copied layer to automatically make the same changes to the background layer.
I tried shutting down Photoshop & reopening, didn't work. Tried restarting the computer, didn't work. The background layer was always locked and the layers aren't linked together. I even closed the photo and opened another photo instead and the same thing happened when I made changes to the copied layer. The same thing happened when I opened a new document just put a dot on the copy layer, it added a dot to the original layer as well. Changes to any layer (not even a copied one) above the background layer will automate changes to the background layer as well. What can I do to stop the copied layer from making changes to the background layer? I can't use Photoshop at all until this is fixed. Thanks

This sounds very peculiar.
Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
Have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

MultiProvider report not functioning - overwriting protected field
Hello,
I have a multiprovider that combines data from the Sales Overview cube (0SD_C03) with a custom plan cube (data from COPA and SIS). In writing queries off of the (active) multiprovider, short dumps occur except when only running against one infoprovider. In other words, if the query is restricted to only show Sales data (0SD_C03), it works fine. If the query is restricted to only show Plan data (custom plan cube), then it works fine. However, the intersection of the two does not work - which is the entire functionality of the multiprovider (a join).
I've cut the query back to the very basics: Fiscal Year and one Key Figure (that is present in both source infocubes). Without specifying or splitting out the InfoProviders, it should combine the data (total the two), but instead creates a short dump. Using a structure to split Actuals from Plan also results the short dump. The only way to get the report to actually execute and return is to restrict it to just one InfoProvider. I tried copying the MultiProvider and starting over, but that did not improve the situation. The failure occurs after the variable screen has been filled in. (Also tried w/out variables.)
Using LISTCUBE, the data is found in a single execution (no filter applied to 0INFOPROV) and splits out to the two infoproviders w/ approp. fiscal year and Key Figure totals. So there seems to be something at the reporting layer malfunctioning.

My Photoshop CS 5 has some strange actions when I copy a portion of a photo using the clone stamp to transfer to another part of the image. It carries the entire layer (not just the stamps selection) across the screen and I cannot place it where I need to. It appears as if I selected the entire layer on purpose (which I did not)
The below items appeared when I opened Photoshop CS 5:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver and has temporarily disabled G & U enhancements. Check the video card malfunctions website for latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the performance panel of preferences.”
(I believe this started after the automatically updated Windows was applied. It was coincident with the before mentioned problem . . . but I don’t really know if it had anything to do with it. )For the Clone Stamp problem, check the Clone Source panel and Clipped is probably unchecked.
If so, check Clipped and see if that makes a difference.

As to the video card problem:

What is the make and model of your graphics card?

Photoshop CS2 Layer Styles / Blending Options stopped working
I'm running Photoshop CS2 on PC. When right clicking on layers to bring up the Layer Styles / Blending Options palette, I can get the palette okay but the selections won't work when I check the boxes.
I try to select different options....drop shadow, inner shadow, etc. but nothing shows up. It's not a preview problem because the changes are not visible in my image even after I select OK.
I've reset my preferences (alt+ctl+shift) but it didn't help.
Can anyone suggest to me what I can do to wake up this palette?? I've got work pending and my online searches have left me empty handed.

John: The file is PSD, RGB mode, 300dpi. Last night, I tried the layer styles in another file and it wouldn't' work.... another NEW file. Today, I opened an existing file that had layers styles already in effect and I can see them, I can click them on/off AND I can put layer styles onto other layers in the existing files that did not have them previously. I just tried creating a new file and, of course, the layer styles now work in the NEW file.... this is something I tried last night and it didn't work at that time.
Ed: Yes, I'm on the right layer. I've tried it on several layers, none of which are transparent. Thanks for the heads up.
So, this tells me it's something to do with this particular image file. I must've accidentally hit something that's put it into a strange mode. Last night, out of frustration, I just gave up, shut it all down, and turned the computer off. This morning, I went in and created a new image document and then one by one I copied and pasted the layers of my malfunctioning image into the new one. Now I can get the layers to work.
I have no idea what was wrong, but it seems I should just trash the problematic file and start fresh. At least the individual layers were not compressed and it's still salvagable.

Photoshop CS6 Beta does NOT fill Layer with 50% Gray when in CMYK-Mode
1. Open a CMYK-Document
2. Create a new empty Layer
3. Use the "Fill..." command with the option "50% Grey"
4. Result should be: 50% Cyan, 50% Magenta, 50% Yellow, 50% Black, but is 49% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 39% Yellow, 27% Black
-> while this function is normally used to create a layer with the blending mode "Overlay" to have a basis for an "invisible" layer where you can lighten/darken the image or add noise to it, the function "fill with 50% Grey" is malfunctioning now, because this affects an image modification instead of being invisible.There's a definite difference between Photoshop CS5 and CS6:
Noting that the B value is now 50% in the HSB readout, could it be that this may be an intentional redefinition of ''50% Gray''?

PS6 blur and smudge tools malfunctioning
I've had this problem for some time and have yet to find a solution.
Several months ago my blur and smudge tools in Photoshop 6 suddenly began malfunctioning. Any pixel blurred with one of these tools is turned black if the resulting pixel is at less than 100% opacity. It only effects the blur and smudge tools, painting with a 50% opacity brush for example does not result in black pixels. I'm a veteran Photoshop user of many years and am very familiar with all tool options, this is something that literally happened overnight, and permanently. Here's an example image if you need help visualizing the problem:
I've tried wiping PS6 from my PC and freshly installing it in hopes of resolving the issue, but it doesn't appear in my Add/Remove Programs list in control panel and there is no uninstall.exe in the Photoshop folder so the only thing I can do is delete the Photoshop program folder. This of course fails to remove whatever hidden registry files are on my computer though, as evidenced by all my preferences still being intact when I reinstall. I have individually reset the preferences for the blur and smudge tools, as well as deleted the whole Photoshop preferences file by holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt on startup, neither of which has removed the problem. This seems to be a corrupted tool function, not a preference issue.
I've also installed PS6 on an old computer to make sure it isn't a problem with a source file on the CD, and sure enough the blur and smudge tools function correctly.
If anyone else has dealt with this or a similar issue, I'd much appreciate any solution or wisdom you can impart from the experience. I'm convinced something is corrupted in one of my PS program files since I've tried it on a second computer with no problems. I'm sure reformatting would fix it, but...ugh.

Here's another sample for anyone else following this thread. I think it better illustrates the problem. This is a picture I did in the past using the blur and smudge tools for shading. The girl's nose is on a separate layer. I used the blur tool to soften the side of her nose and the smudge tool to pull at the edges of the layer to blend it with the rest of her skin, which worked correctly as seen in the first panel. The next two panels show what happens when I try those same techniques now with the same tools. -
I am facing a problem and I am not sure if its a graphic card malfunction. When I open applications like Chrome, VLC player, and most apps, my display suddenly changes color. It is as though the Theme was changed. The normal grey panel on opened windows turns to light blue and everything else seem as though there is a light blue layer on top of it. When I close these applications (quit) the display returns to its normal self.
My MacBook Pro is 2 years old, and I have an extended warranty. Will Apple replace my graphic card if it is actuall the graphic card's problem?I had that problem, too, and it's been documented both here and on the Adobe forums. What happens is that when you have dynamic switching on, when an application that uses your discrete GPU kicks in, the screen will change color. My problem lasted for a couple of weeks then just vanished.
What you need to do is download Cody Krieger's gfxCardStatus and turn off dynamic switching and leave your GPU set to discrete only. That's the only fix that I know of at this time. I don't know why it happens or why mine stopped.

Since installing LTR 5.4, which I've now upgraded to 5.6, I've encountered repeated slowness and malfunctions in operations, especially when using the Compare View function and the Tab key to open and close the right and left side panels. Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer. I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation. I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC. I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots. Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes. Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond. In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images. After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible. Eventually the info fields in the panels would open up.
I also created a new user account and imported a folder of 160 images. After half an hour Compare View began mis-placing data. (I have a screen shot to show this.) CANDIDATE appears on the left side of SELECT, whereas it should be on the right. The accompanying camera exposure data appears almost entirely to the left of the mid-screen dividing line. Although the Candidate and Select headings were transposed, the image exposure data was not, but the data for the image on the right was almost entirely to the left of the line dividing the screen in two.
Gurus in The Lightroom Forum have examined Task Manager data showing Processes running and Performance indicators and they see nothing wrong. I could also send screen shots of this data.
At this point, the only way I can process my images is to work 30-40 minutes and then shut down everything, exit, and re-start LTR. This is not normal. I hope you can find the cause, and then the solution. If you would like to see my screen shots, tell me how to submit them.

How do I use one layer for multiple pages?
I've been using Photoshop to create a series of web pages. I have about 20 such pages right now.
Unfortunately, I need to change the navigation menu that is found on all 20 pages.
To make these changes, do I need to change 20 different files? Or is there a way to link one layer group to multiple PSD files so that editing it once results in it changing on all 20 pages?

CYou'll have to make some sort of change to each document, but it should only take a few minutes when there's only 20 of them. You edit the group in one, then for each of the others, simply duplicate or drag the edited group into it and delete the old group.
There is also the option of structuring your workflow with Smart Objects which can be refreshed in each document with a common document containing only the menu group. For linking of Smart Object content, there is a third party plug-in but I don't know whether it is reliable. -
How can I create a new layer that is a gradient?
Hi, i'm very new to photoshop scripting and am having some trouble.
I'm looking for a way to take an image i have and set it to have a gradient opacity as it approaches the middle, my thought on how to do that was to just create a layer that is a gradient from top left to bottom right and then attach that as a vector mask.
Any ideas on how I could create this gradient layer in script, or a better method of doing this opacity gradient?

Is there a way to add multiple outlines on the same layer?
Hi there! I'm trying to add an outline to text or objects through the style fx, then I want to add more outlines. It would be nice if you could just add a new stroke like in illustrator. I don't want copy the layer and just do a thicker outline behind it, the point is to have it all on the same layer .. just wondering if thats possible. Thanks!
You have been given two approaches which may meet your needs. There is another way that offers independent control of the styles, but you do use multiple layers.
Assume you have a path that defines your object and lets say you want to apply three different styles and have independent and ongoing control over each. Create a new blank layer for each style. On each of those layers apply a brush stroke to the path, say a 1 pixel stroke whose color is also the background color as an example. Now on each of those layers apply your chosen layer styles. That is what I have done in this example:

Blue Screen of Death and USB malfunctions on HP Envy running Windows 7
Hello.
I have an HP Envy 14 notebook PC. It's running Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, version 6.1.7601. When I run it, I eventually starts getting an error message from the right of the desktop toolbar telling me that a USB device I plugged in is malfunctioning and did not get installed correctly. This is happening while my USB ports are empty.
As this is happening, the computer also starts playing background static that you can hear over headphones as well. This sound goes away once you mute the machine. After plugging the computer into a monitor to play sound through its speakers, there is also a curious effect; after I remove all the cords and plug in earphones, I hear amplified booming sounds from small movements, rather than what is meant to be playing. This latter effect goes away once I restart the computer,
Eventually, the computer displays a blue screen and crashes. The blue screen asks me to disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing. Once the machine restarts, it informs gives me the following report:

It also gives me the option to check for solutions. Doing so closes the screen and gives no further information. Please advise as to how to address these issues.I have the same issue you have had. This happend to my old hp, I thought it was a fluke so when I bought my new hp envy a year ago I was dumbfounded to see that its happening all over again. This time my hp envy 14 is doing the same thing yours did with the same code and all. Can you please tell me what you did to fix this or were you even able to fix it at all?

IPod Nano: Error Message "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it"
Hi everyone, I just received 2 brand new iPod Nanos for my kids for Christmas, thought I'd be smart and sync them both now before wrapping them so I don't have to be messing around with them on the day. One synced without a problem, then using the same cable, same computer, same USB port, the 2nd one came up with "The USB device has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it" I've tried restarting my computer, unplugging and reinserting the USB. Is there anthing else I can try before returning it? Thanking you for any help.
I have solved my problem, I ended up ringing Apple and got an awesome lady who told me to reset it by pressing the sleep button and menu button together for about 10 seconds and once it actually turned on for the first time the computer then recognised it, so it's all good, :-) Thank you lovely lady!

LACK OF FULL PEN TOOL FUNCTIONALITY WHEN CREATING A SHAPE LAYER
Hello, I'm going through Chris Meyer's video course on being an AE apprentice and have spent over an hour on the following issue.
Here is what I know.
I know I am trying to create a shape layer, not a mask, to create a frame to surround the video of the green field on the attached screenshot. Therefore, I pressed "F2" to make sure I am doing so.
I want to define the borders of this picture frame by using the pen tool to draw a path on the layer entitled "Windy Peak".
I have highlighted that layer in my timeline.
This video was pasted on to a placeholder shape that I had created using Command Option "/" on my Mac.
I do have limited use of the pen tool, because it displays properly when I hover it above the borders of the video to be framed.
But I lack access to the toolbar controls I want to complete my assignment.
For example, I would like to create a gradient to define the internal coloration of this frame, but I have no use of the eyedropper when I click on the Color Picker.
Also, I am unable to access or manipulate any of the standard fill or stroke options for use of my pen.
This is what I know.

As previously stated, I do have use of the pen tool, but it only has limited functionality as demonstrated by the path I created on the green meadow. My Tools Panel remains activated .
My core problem remains that I am unable to adjust the fill or stroke settings for my pen.
I have tried changing and resetting various work spaces and this has not helped.
I'm scratching my head here.
