Layer Mask Simulation in Photoshop Elements 7

I downloaded a PDF file from the Photoshop Elements 7 website Adobe Elements Inspiration Browser entitled Layer Mask Simulation in PSE7 and followed the steps exactly.  However, one of the steps instructs you to choose "Layers>Create Clipping Mask".  I don't see "Create Clipping Mask" in the Layers menu or anywhere else.  Is this tutorial messed up, or am I missing something???

Here's the PSE 7 help page. As Mark states in his post, it's Layer<Group with Previous. I would assume the tutorial must have been written with PSE 8 in mind.

Adobe changed the command's name from clipping group to clipping mask. They work the same exact way only the name is different. *Keep this name change in mind when you watch or read tutorials on the web.
I think this command's name change was made to help match commands between various Adobe products.

  • Layer mask error in photoshop

I have made a video, I've tried everything I can think of.
It doesn't happen all the time, or the same layer set up.  I'll be editing a layer, and all of a sudden a layer mask is activated, and it erases everything.  All my layer info is still there, but a mask is active.
If I make no sense, watch the video, apparently I'm the only one on planet earth with this problem, I've never found anyone else with this issue.
Yes, I've tried defaulting the preferences
Yes, I've tried turning on basic mode.
    Nothing works!
Paint Tool SAI is looking awfully awesome right now.

  • Colors locked in Photoshop Elements 6

Colors locked in Photoshop Elements 6
I created a 1 layer TIFF file in Photoshop Elements 6 with text only which was distorted then flattened. The result was grey text on a white background. The problem is I can't change the color of the gray text.
I select the Foreground color icon on the tool bar at the left side, then I get the color pallet window, but no matter what color I select the Foreground color icon can only be gray or white (if I chose a lighter color).
Somehow 24 bits worth of color choices are converted to 1 bit (gray or white), and there's no obvious controls to change this, no F1 help guides and no obvious knowledgebase or forum comments. Does the file format, which is unknown to me, govern Photoshop operations (?), which would of course make absolutely no sense even if it were true, because that should only be an output formatting decision.
Thanks for any comment or reference.

  • Layer Mask Issue, please help.

    Hi,
My layer mask is not working, not sure what's happening. I'm using CS 4 . i want to use blending effect so i place the photos on a white background. I click layer mask on each photo, select brush tool brush on the photo but is not working, is either appear black or white color when i use the brush paint on it. If not wrong, the foreground color should be grey & white in layer mask function but it appear black & white instead. Please see the screenshot below. Please help, thank you

Hi, I will try explain your problem.
In your posted example we can see see that you have three layers in the layers panel.
On each one of layers, we can see, on the left side, that there is the Layer Thumbnail, that is a showing the actual image of your layer and then a Layer Mask Thumbnail (the white rectangle, on the right side).
A layer mask works as follows: you tell Photoshop to display or hide actual parts (pixels) of the layer with greyscale values. A white pixel on the layer masks tells Photoshop to show the image area at full opacity (non-transparent), while a black pixel on the layer mask tells Photoshop to hide the layer totally (0% of opacity.) Gray values will therefore show the image data partially.
But you are painting on the document, and you need to indicate Photoshop whether you want to paint on the image (what you did in your example, and you do not desire) or if you want to paint on the layer mask (what you want to do). This indication is called Targeting. It is done simply by clicking either on the Layer thumbnail, or on the Layer mask thumbnail of your layer. (Clicking different areas of a layer in the layer palette are different orders you give to the program). For instance, if you want to switch the layer you are hiding to another one, in order to paint on its mask, make sure to click on the layer mask thumbnail of the other layer in the Layers Panel.
In Photoshop CS5.5 and earlier, you will see that a layer or its mask is targeted because there will be three outlines around it: a black, a white and a black one again, like the actual layer data in the highlighted layer 0928 of your image. You should see those three outlines around the layer mask in order to paint on it.
In CS6, the target indicator is different, look in my image, we can see that the layer mask is targeted thanks to the white corners: I was then able to mask part of the black layer by targeting the Layer Mask in the layer panel, and then painting on the image where I want to hide the layer.
If you want to modify the actual layer (the photos, in your case), simply click on its thumbnail, and you are good to go!
    Hope this helps.

  • Brush Tool Error with Layer Masks

I've identified a layer mask bug in Photoshop 14.2.1 for Mac. When working with non-vector layer masks, the brush tool will not paint a darker value than the white level present in the mask. For instance:
when a layer mask is created from the icon at the bottom of the layers window, the mask itself is white, representing full visibility in the masked layer. If you attempt to use the brush tool with 100% black (to actually mask something in the applicable layer), it does not function. I am able to use the paint bucket tool and the pencil tool to fill black in the mask, but not the brush tool. If the mask is 67% grey, and my brush tool is set to 66% grey, it still will not affect the mask; the white level cannot be decreased, only increased with the brush tool. Bug!

Sure. A mask is just a greyscale image and the blending mode is a property of the brush tool not the mask.
It is actually a very useful feature especially for extracting hair. When painting with black/white in overlay mode you can easily clean up the edges without affecting the pure black/white parts of the mask.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 Layer Mask Difficulties

    Hi,
I am trying to use the Photoshop Elements 9 layer mask tool but every time I brush over my image to hide sections of it, the image merely becomes faded-out, as if I were using a brush with a low opacity. However, my brush opacity is at 100%, as is the opacity for the layer mask itself. I have made sure that I am using a black brush, that my brush mode is set on normal, that the layer mask mode is set on normal, that the image's color mode is RGB, and that the layer mask is selected when I am painting on it. I have reset all the tools to their default settings, and have gotten rid of all other layers except for the image in question and the background layer so that nothing is obstructing my view. Whenever I paint on the layer mask, the thumbnail shows the black areas in which I painted, as it should; however, the image is still apparent. Meanwhile, when I use the eraser tool, areas I erase disappear just fine. What am I doing that is causing the layer mask tool to behave in this way?
    Thanks!

    Could you post a screenshot?
If you press the D key then the X key, does that make any difference when you paint on the layer mask?

  • Photoshop Elements 6: Hue/Saturation as a basic layer?

When creating a hue/saturation layer in Photoshop Elements 6, is it possible to have it act as a basic layer, adding and removing from the selection, rather than a mask layer?

The simple method is to place your selection on a separate layer and clip the hue/saturation mask to it.
In this example I selected the sky and pushed up the saturation to really exaggerate the blue color.
    1. Make your selection
    2. Press Ctrl+J to place it on its own layer
    3. Add new adjustment layer (hue/saturation) and click OK to close the dialog
    4. Hover your mouse over the dividing line between the adjustment layer and selection layer whilst holding down the alt key. Click when you see two small connecting circle appear. A downward pointing arrow will appear to show the adjustment layer is clipped to the selection layer.
    5. Double click the thumbnail icon on the adjustment layer (not the white mask thumbnail) and that will bring back the dialog box.
    6. Now use the sliders to make your selective adjustments.

  • Layers Mask, Photoshop Elements 3 (Win)

    Hi,
Hope someone can help me, I've a basic understanding of Photoshop 7 but can only afford Elements. Can someone advise how to set up a Layer Mask in Elements, is it possible? I want to blend several photographs.
    Regards,
    Ernie

    Jim....
Can you just clarify a couple of things, please?
When you drag the second image onto the first, are you using the Move Tool?
When you say the second image becomes the background is this confirmed in the Layers Pallete? That is you when you turn off Layer 1 you see you second image.
Regarding the size of the image. The image you first open determines the size of the canvas based on how many pixels it has. If you open a second image that has more pixels, it wont all go on unless you transform it.

  • Photoshop Elements 9 - unable to use brush in adjustment layer

    HI
I'm new to Adobe Photoshop Elements and have recently purchased Elements 9. I am having problems using the brush in adjustment levels.
I've opened a RAW image and converted it to black and white by desaturating it using an adjustment layer. I'm then trying to adjust the black and white image using several adjustment levels. I'm using the brush to black out the parts of the image in the particular adjustment layer I don't want changing. This worked initially, but for some reason, the brush stopped working in the adjustment layers. It's a soft brush set to 300px, the mode is "Normal" and opacity is 100%. Put simply, it's not obliterating anything in the layer, nor does anything appear in the thumbnail over on the right (both these things happened before)
The brush works normally when adjusting an image with no levels i.e. when you simply open a RAW or TIFF file and use the brush.
I've tried uninstalling the programme and reinstalling, but the porblem persists.
Can anyone offer any help? It's frustrating as I can't selectively adjust my image. Am I doing something wrong, is it a glitch, or is it just a simple case of ticking a simple box some where in the pre-sets?
    Hoping someone can help.

Check that you have your brush set to black (foreground color black)
and that your actually painting on the layer mask (click on the layer mask
    to make it active).
Try just painting on the mask of your adjustment layer used to desaturate the photo
with a black brush (the color should come back)
Sometimes with multiple adjustment layers, the strokes on one layer mask may overlap
    the strokes on another.
If you want more control over a black and white conversion, you might try something like
    the following.
    1. Add a hue\saturation adjustment layer and change the layers blending mode to Color
    2. Add another hue\saturation adjustment layer and move the saturation slider to -100
    3. On the first adjustment layer (the one with the color blend mode), move the hue
and saturation sliders for different black and white effects.
    4. If you want to add a color tint, set the top hue\saturation layer to colorize and
adjust the hue and saturation sliders for different tint effects.

  • Photoshop Elements 4.0 & Masking

I am doing something wrong concerning masking.
I am trying to emulate the example found here:
    http://www.worth1000.com/tutorial.asp?sid=161107&print=1
    On Step 3, it says,
Let's start with Geri's abdomen and the skulls artwork, just drag the image over her abdomen and
apply a mask to the skulls layer. Using the Move tool roughly place the artwork where you want it to sit, using the Transform option stretch/perspective, etc. to get better placement.
Mask out the areas where you have any overlap, return to the Move tool if need be and Transform it to your liking using its different settings, I ended up with this. Some people have used displacement maps to align tattoos, not once have I required them.
I tried masking the "overlap" areas by using the Selection Brush Tool with the mode set to "Mask". The trouble is, when I blend the layers using "Multiply," the tattoo overwrites on to the clothing, which is bad. The skin portion is fine, but I want to prevent the tattoo from printing over the clothes. Can someone tell me where I am going wrong?
    Best regards,
    Kevin

Hi Terri,<br /><br />For now, I am going focus on the masking technique.  I still struggling with that one. <br /><br /><i>The color doesn't matter. I place the image over the solid Color fill adjustment layer because I want to use it as a base for a clipping group. With the image layer selected in the layers palette, I hit Control G to create a clipping group. I then paint in the adjustment layer mask. If you prefer using the menu bar, the command sequence is Layer<Group with Previous.(Painting black in the adjustment layer mask will hide some of it's pixels which in turn creates corresponding holes in the image above it.) The idea here is that layers within a clipping group rely on the base layer's pixels to determine their visibility.<br /><br />The only reason color would matter using a color fill adjustment layer would be the color painted in the mask itself. Black paint totally hides while white totally reveals. Shades of gray would create semi-transparency dependent on brightness. (Masks are grayscale so you can't paint color on them.) BTW, the idea of semi transparenty is why the tut talks about using black at a low opacity to mask out some but not all of the tattoo.</i><br /><br />Okay here is what I did.<br /><br />1) Imported a graphic of a woman...Gerri Halliwell...she is now my background layer.<br /><br />2) Imported tattoo (crown) and it is on layer 1<br /><br />3) Between the two layers is a color fill, white is the "base" color.  Layer 1 is grouped with Color Fill 1.<br /><br />4) So that I could see where I was painting on the Color Fill 1, I reduced the opacity of Layer 1 and Color Fill 1 to around 30%.<br /><br />5) I painted on the clothing "black" so that the crown tattoo would not show on Gerri's dress.  That worked, partially.  I will explain in a moment.<br /><br />6) Layer 1, mode is multiply so that only the black tattoo shows through and not its white base color.<br /><br />While the tattoo is not painted on the dress, the dress a darker red where I painted.  If I increase the opacity from Layer 1 and Color Fill 1 back to 100%, then I get: partial tattoo showing (crown) and a small portion of the red dress showing (where I painted).  Everything else is solid white.<br /><br />Did I do something wrong?  If I have, I am sure it is something simple.<br /><br />Can I send you my file to see what I have done?  I am just learning, so this is not urgent or terribly important.  I just want to improve my knowledge and skills.<br /><br />With regards to the clipping, yes, I want to try that afterwards.  I read "Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0" and am working through "The Photoshop Elements 3 Book for Digital Photographers" by Kelby.  I started learning with PSE 3, and recently got PSE 4.<br /><br />Thank you.<br /><br />Best regards,<br />Kevin

  • Cropping layer in Photoshop Elements

    Hey~
I have just started using Photoshop Elements.I have three different pictures i their each individual layerss. I would like to crop one and when i use the crop tool it crops all the layers together. I have done my research and i tried using the Marquee Rectangular tool to select what I want. But, after I Inverse, I cant do Edit Clear( as suggested else where) becasue it "won't work". I also cannot do cntrl J to select that in a new layer. It just wont let me.
If this doesn't make sense, feel free to ask questions.
I appriciate any kind of help:-)
    Thank you!

Here's a couple of non-destructive methods to crop a layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee. Right-click the selection and select Layer via Copy. Hide the original layer.
With the layer selected, make your selection with the marquee, click Add Layer Mask. I like this one as (if you unlink the mask) you can then reposition the mask in the layer image.
