Layer mask with background animation

Hi all,
I am looking to create a video for my YouTube channel using Layer Mask but I am not too competent in using masks.
The logo for my channel is here:
I would like to create a moving background in where the coloured image is but I want to mask out the white areas and keep the text on top. Is it as simple as just creating a hexagonal layer mask with the text in a separate layer?

Image in a layer mask with gradient problem

Hi,
I have a image in a layer mask with an gradient on a 30c0m0y100k background and at the gradient from image to background I always get a white "shine". which NOT appears when the background is the standard photoshop-black definition in all colors.

Layer Mask with Adjust Skin Tones?

Is there a way to use a layer mask with the adjust skin tone option in PE4? I like what it did to the skin , but not what it did to the wall in the photo. Thanks.

Hi Jon there are at least three ways.
#1..Make a selection.. then apply the skin tone option. Only the selected area will be active.
#2... Duplicate the layer you want to work on. Apply the skin tone. Then hold the Ctrl key and make a new layer. The new blank layer will be below the layer with the skin tone. Then hold the Alt key and click between the two layers to group them. The skin tone will disappear but you can paint it back with a black brush, or remove with an eraser. Just be sure to have the blank layer active.
#3... Duplicate and apply tone as in #2. Open an adjustment layer, like levels, directly below the skin tone layer. Click ok do not make any adjustments. Then as above hold the Alt key and click between the layers to group them, look for the link symbol. Now you can remove with a black brush or add with a white brush.

What do you do when painting on a layer mask with the correct color dosen't work?

I have been trying to do some compositing but when i paint with white on a black layer mask or black on a white layer mask, NOTHING HAPPENS. What should I be looking for? Is there an adjustment that needs to be set a certain way? I would also like to know how you open multiple images in one document with each image on it's own layer. Thanks...

Everything is set correctly... still nothing.
I want to use a texture and an image. I have them both in the same document, but the only way to get the texture to allow the image to show through is to reduce the opacity. That's not the look I want. I tried clipping the two different images together, but then I could only see the photo itself and no texture. I just don't understand why when I set things correctly they don't work.
One other question if I may? Everything, all of a sudden is opening in Preview instead of with PS as it has always been in the past. I don't recall changing any settings. What should I look for to make PS my default...
Oh and one more thing. When I click on Safari photoshop goes missing and Safari shows. If I click on photoshop then Safari goes missing. This is INCREDIBLY annoying and I don't know why it's doing that. Both these things started at the same time. I'm on a Mac.

Turned off automatic layer masks with adjustment layers - want them back

I somehow turned off the option that creates a layer mask automatically when creating a new adjustment layer. I need that feature back, but I cannot locate it anywhere in photoshop or on google. Does anyone know how to reset that option? I am using CS5. Thanks!

Stationary layer mask with moving image in iWeb?

Hi everyone,
I have a an image that I only want 1/4 of revealed. I want to animate the image so that it moves across the opening of the mask (like someone passing by a window).
Is this possible in iWeb?

Thank You for the links- this is a real education!- and after you rewrite the code where do you put it in iWeb? Do you paste it into a text box? Is the code embedded into the iWeb file or is it a link to a server outside the file?
Sorry about all the questions- I'm just trying to understand the technology so I can make a decision of where to start learning. I am looking for the simplest path to follow.

Blending with a layer mask question

In CS5, I make a selection and copy it to a new layer and use the bloat tool to manipulate the layer, I then select the new layer mask with this new bloated layer and use the brush tool with the airbrush turned on to blend in this new layer with the original layer.
However, I am just not sure I understand what this is doing.
1. How is using the layer mask to blend it in different from just using ther eraser tool to erase parts of it?

I don't get the impression you fully understand the concept of the layer mask. Using a brush on the layer mask does nothing to the layer itself. Think of it like a window through which you see the layer. Paint part of the window black and you can't see the layer underneath. Scrape the paint off, and voila. You now see again what was there.

Bug report: [layer mask] editing colors

Sometimes it appears that the white/black color combination that is automatically selected in layer mask editing may override the selected color combination outside of layer mask editing.
Example:
1) Open Photoshop.
2) Select two colors: white/white.
3) Create two blank documents, each with an empty Layer 1.
4) In one document, add a layer mask to Layer 1. The colors should have been automatically switched to black/white as the layer mask is selected.
5) In this document, use the gradient tool to fill the layer mask with black/white.
6) Switch to the other document, and notice that the color selection is again white/white.
7) In this other document, use the gradient tool to fill Layer 1. Notice that the layer is filled with black/white instead of white/white as selected.
Tested on: PS CS6, Windows 7, 64-bit.

On further testing I think the issue may not be directly related to layer masks at all.
Basically the issue is that the Gradient tool colors don't update to the 'default foreground/background colors' in cases where it seems that they should.
One example of such a case (as illustrated in the original post) is when the Gradient tool keeps the black/white color combo used for a layer mask in a previous document after switching to the current document where a non-masked layer is targeted and the default fg/bg colors have correctly reverted to white/white.
Example:
layer mask targeted in doc1 - notice synchronised Gradient and default fg/bg colors
after switching to non-masked layer in doc2, Gradient is still black/white although default fg/bg colors have reverted appropriately to white/white
Bug or not, it's something I wanted to point out as it seems inconsistent.

My text layer mask is not working when I test it

My text layer mask does not appear when I test the movie. The
mask works move the key along the timeline, but when I test the
movie nothing shows up. I'm doing exactly the same thing I do when
I mask images. I actually imported an image to the text layer and
the mask worked correctly. What am I doing wrong?

provide a link the fla - make sure your text layer is truly
linked to the Mask layer. What is the
font? Did you try breaking apart the font until it becomes
raw shapes? not that you want to do that
but save as with new name - try it and if it still doesnt
work, then the issue is not with your font.

Layer Mask Compatibility

Hey,
I use both Gimp and Photoshop (CS5) and swap between the two when designing.
However, I painted a layer in CS5, then went into Gimp and added a layer mask with some gradients on it. Then when I go back into CS5 the layer isnt visible unless I "Disable Layer Mask" and the layer appears. (BTW the layer is visible before anyone asks). Anyone know why? Is there compatibility issues between CS5 and Gimp Layer masks?
Its just annoying as unless I can fix it, then I will have to re do all the gradients in CS5 instead of Gimp.

Welcome to the forum.
My best guess would be that there IS an incompatibility between the Gimp Layer Mask, or perhaps THAT Layer Mask.
There are several folk here, who use Gimp, and will likely be able to give you direct comments on compatibility, or lack there of.
I do similar between Corel Painter and PS. Over the years, Painter has gotten better at handling most things in PS, but going back and forth can require some workarounds, or at least some planning, before just switching back and forth.

Does PSE5 Have Layer Masks

I use 3.0, and I'm pretty happy with it. It has become obvious to me that some of the techniques I'd like to employ, after seeing Photoshop demos, involve layer masks. 3.0 does not have masks. Does 5.0 have layer masks?
I have Grant's Tools and there is a layer mask with it, but it does not seem to operate the same way I've seen Photoshop masks work. Perhaps I don;'t use it properly.

No version of Elements has built-in masks (that I am aware of). There are a number of free mask add-ons, however, that exploit the fact that Elements has the code for masks in it even though it doesn't let you use them. Grant has a version that works with 5.0, I believe. Since this is a work-around, adding a mask doesn't work in the same seamless fashion as in standard Photoshop. Each add-on works slightly differently since each author implemented it differently -- if you find one awkward, you might try some of the others to see it they match your workflow better.

Multiple gradient fill layer masks?

Hi,
What I'm trying to do: Fade a layer both on the right and the left.
I can select a layer, and add a layer mask with a gradient fill, say, along the right edge because I want the right edge to fade away and reveal the layers underneath. On the same layer, I want to do the same thing on the left edge. That is, I want both the right and left edges of the layer to fade away. But when I do the second gradient fill on the layer mask, it completely overwrites the first, leaving just the last one.
What is the correct way to achive this?
I've uploaded/attached an image to this post that shows my current workaround, which is to split the layer into two. Each half then has its own layer mask, one to fade the right, and one to fade the left. But I can't believe that there isn't a better way to do this.

When you put the gradient into the mask, change the Mode in the Option Bar from Normal to Multiply. This will allow you to "add to" an existing gradient, rather than overwriting it. Other Modes can be used to build up more comlex gradients.

Photoshop CS3 crashing when working on image with layer mask

I've never had problems with Photoshop CS3 (or any other version) until now.
Here's the problem:
I created an image that has a layer mask applied to it. The image is saved in one layer (named Layer One) but not flattened in order to retain a transparent background. So far so good.
But when I try to exapnd the canvas or make other changes to the image, it crashes. Repeatedly.
Do I have to apply the mask (and thus give up the transparency) to prevent crashes?
I did find a workaround. Applied the mask, made a cast drop shadow (which is what I was after all along), then copy-and-pasted the drop shadow into the original layer-masked image with transparent background.
But is this the only way? Am I experiencing a bug or is something else wrong?

Problem with layer masks ... help

Ok. I have my original image. I've added a layer to make it black and white. Then added a layer mask to that because I want to make a section of it color. I'm using the brush tool to do so but having no luck. Yes I am on the correct layer and correct mask. I've done this several times before, but for some reason, today its not working. help

Trouble fading layer with layer mask

I'm trying to blend a photo with a background color. I select the new layer mask (selected), I select the gradient tool (color into transparent), and then draw a line to fade the image layer into the background later and it does nothing. Why isn't this working? Every tutorial I have looked at tells me to do these steps. How do I fix this??

I don't see any black on your mask. It should look something like this: Whatever is painted black on the mask will be masked on the layer, depending on the transparancy of the black.
